The Zoo of Death 印尼泗水 「死亡動物園」

The death of a young lion earlier this year was the latest horrific( 可怕的 ) headline(頭條 ) concerning(關於 ) the infamous( 聲 名 狼 藉 的 ) Surabaya Zoo( 泗水動物園 ) in Indonesia( 印尼 ).

The “zoo of death,” as it is called by foreign media(媒體 ), has seen hundreds of animal deaths in recent years, including 315 in 2011.

What has made the zoo notorious( 惡名昭彰的 ) is that so many of the deaths have been from unnatural( 非自然的 ) causes.

For instance, an autopsy( 驗屍 ) on a dead giraffe( 長 頸 鹿 ) revealed 20 kilograms of plastic( 塑 膠 ) in its stomach.

A Sumatran tiger(蘇門答臘虎 ) allegedly(據宣稱 ) died from being fed meat tainted(汙染的 ) with formaldehyde(甲醛 ). The stories of mistreatment(虐待 ) at the zoo are numerous(數不清的 ).

The Surabaya City Administration(行政機構 ) took over( 接管 ) management of the zoo in 2013, seemingly(表面上 ) in response to( 回 應 ) public complaints about animal deaths.

However, animal welfare activist(行動主義者 ) Sybelle Foxcroft believes the city’s political leaders’ negligence( 疏忽 ) is the source of the problem.

Foxcroft, the director of Conservation(保護 ) Environmental Education 4 Life, blames the mayor directly.

She said, “The mayor continues to ignore it all and pretend that nothing is happening. It is a shocking thing for the world to see.”
