ContentsMost dietitians both use supplementsthemselves and recommend them toclients on a regular basis.

In the 2009 Healthcare Professionals Impact Study it was observed that 74% of dietitians use supplements on a regular basis, another

22% use them occasionally, and 97% of dietitians recommend dietary supplements to their clients.

When looking at specific supplement usage we see that multivitamins are at the top with 84% of the dietitians surveyed having taken them in the last year. Other supplements commonly taken by dietitians include: calcium supplements (63%), omega-3 supplements (47%), vitamin D (43%), vitamin C (29%), probiotics (24%), B vitamins (23%), fiber supplements (22%), and green tea supplements (18%). The top reasons they took supplements themselves and recommended them to clients were to increase bone health, help fill nutritional gaps, and to improve overall health and wellness.

The study also found that dietitians were much more likely to be healthier in other aspects of their life. The report showed a high occurrence of healthy eating, good stress management, regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and getting adequate sleep. Other studies that have surveyed nurses and physicians also show a trend in increased supplement usage. In whole this study helps to reaffirm the evidence that most healthcare professionals believe that they should be adding dietary supplements to their already healthy lifestyle.

A study published in the December issue of Neurology has found that certain nutrients work together

synergistically to promote brain health. The study looked at the effects of diet and nutrient intake in seniors on memory, thinking and brain volume. The researchers recruited 104 individuals (average age 87) and measured blood levels of certain nutrients, as well as memory, and thinking in all study participants. They also analyzed MRI scans to determine the brain volume of 42 of the subjects.

Overall, participants in this study were healthy nonsmokers with relatively few chronic diseases and free of memory and thinking problems. Most had generally healthy diets, but there were some with deficiencies of certain nutrients. This created enough variation to determine that nutrient status does play a significant role in memory, thinking, and brain volume. It was determined that nutrient levels accounted for 17% of the variation found in memory and thinking, and for the 37% of the variation in brain volume.

With this data the researchers came to three conclusions. The first conclusion is that individuals with diets high in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins C, D, E, and B were more likely to score better on memory and thinking tests. Those with diets high in trans-fat were more likely to both score poorly on memory and thinking tests, and to have brain shrinkage. Finally, individuals with low omega-3 fatty acid intake and other nutrient intake are more likely to have lower brain volume. Getting adequate nutrients through a balanced diet and supplements may be an important overall approach to maintaining good brain health and thinking ability as we age.

NUTRIENT LEVELS LINKED TO MEMORY, THINKING, AND BRAIN VOLUMEA recent study has shown that nutrient levels account for a 17% variation in memory and thinking ability, and a 37% variation in brain volume in a group of older individuals.

USANA scientists recently conducted a study in conjunction with a research team at the Boston University School of Medicine. The study showed that grape-seed extract and vitamin C may be beneficial for people who already have a form of cardiovascular disease called coronary artery disease (CAD).

Here’s a little bit of background: Oxidative stress may impact the heart’s ability to effectively pump blood. Over time, this impaired function has been shown to be an important factor in the progression of CAD.

Grape-seed extract and vitamin C have been shown to significantly protect against oxidative stress, as well as to have positive effects on blood flow. The USANA/BU team suspected that the powerful antioxidants could support healthy blood flow through supplementation of these two key nutrients together.

Researchers gave study participants, who were already diagnosed with CAD, either a placebo or 450 mg of grape-seed extract and 1500 mg of vitamin C. Blood samples were taken four hours after receiving the first dose, then again four weeks after taking the same dosage every day.

Those in the treatment group showed improved antioxidant levels. Blood flow response also showed significant improvement following the 28-day treatment relative to the placebo group.

These results suggest that grape-seed extract and vitamin C, working together, may help improve vascular function in people with CAD, even in tiny peripheral blood vessels. The results of this study were so impressive they were shared at an event sponsored by the American Heart Association.

Long chain omega-3 fatty acids, primarily from fish oils, are known to reduce various risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease

(CVD). Arterial stiffness is a specific risk factor for CVD, but a specific link between omega-3 intake and improvements on arterial stiffness had not been made until now.

Using a meta-analysis, researchers recently conducted a study to quantify the effects of omega-3 on arterial stiffness and its association with CVD. Multiple databases and clinical trial registries were used to obtain data from randomized and controlled adult human clinical trials on the link between arterial stiffness and omega-3 intake. A total of 10 trials met the final inclusion criteria. The studies included results from using both pulse wave velocity (PWV) and arterial compliance to measure aterial stiffness.

The meta-analysis confirmed that supplementation of omega-3 fatty acids was effective in significantly improving arterial stiffness as measured by both PVW and arterial compliance. The results were not influenced when accounting for changes in blood pressure, heart rate or BMI. The results of the current study show that supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids (typically from fish oil) may help decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease in part by reducing arterial stiffness, a known risk factor for CVD.

LONG-CHAIN N-3 FATTY ACIDS FROM FISH OIL IMPROVE ARTERIAL FLEXIBILITY

A recent study in the British Journal of Nutrition has shown that omega-3 fatty acid intake is related to improvements in arterial stiffness, a known risk factor for heart disease.

1What is the USANA RESET Program?

USANA Reset Program is a 15-day weight loss challenge that comes with 3 phases – RESET, Transform and Maintain,

with each phase lasting for 5 days. During RESET, Nutrimeal replaces the three main meals of the day. When we move on to Transform, Nutrimeal replaces two main meals of the day, and during Maintain, Nutrimeal replaces one main meal of the day.

2 What is Nutrimeal? Is it a food or supplement?

Nutrimeal is a food replacement drink that provides a rich source of protein, calcium, and fiber, and is fortified with vitamins and minerals. Nutrimeal is available in three distinct flavours – Chocolate, Strawberry and Vanilla.

3How does Nutrimeal help in weight management?

Nutrimeal contains fewer calories (1 serving ~230 kcal) as compared with Nasi Lemak ~644kcal, Chicken rice ~600 kcal and Double Cheese burger ~440kcal. By slashing off 500kcal from our daily diet together with adequate exercise, we can shed 0.5 – 1 kg per week, which is a healthy and sustainable weight loss!

4What does “GI” mean?

GI refers to Glycemic Index, which is the measurement of how fast is carbohydrate converted into blood sugar and

being absorbed by the cells to release energy. Nutrimeal is of low glycemic index (GI <55) which helps to avoid frequent cravings and regulate blood sugar level.

5Can I add Fibergy Plus into Nutrimeal?

Yes, you may add Fibergy Plus in every serving of Nutrimeal or cold beverages. In fact, we should consume 25-35

grams of fiber a day. Fiber helps to promote satiety which helps to control food intake and maintain gut health.

6During the course of the RESET program, what can I snack on if I feel hungry?

You may snack on 6-8 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables when feeling hungry. 1 serving of fruit is equivalent to 1 medium apple/orange/pear/ kiwi, 1 slice of papaya/ honeydew/watermelon, ½ piece of guava, or 8 pieces of grapes/ longan/ langsat. As for raw vegetables, one serving is equivalent to one cup.

7Can I take supplements during the RESET program?

It is advisable to take supplements during the RESET program. As we cut down on our food intake, we eventually cut down on our nutrient intake too. By taking high quality supplements, it replenishes your body with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids needed daily for optimal cellular health and functions.

8After completing the program, what should I take note of?

Well, after completing the RESET program, it is NOT followed by an “Eat-All-You-Can” program, but you may continue to replace one main meal with Nutrimeal. It is always important to adhere to a well-balanced, low fat, low sugar, low salt diet and include fruits and vegetables as part of the daily diet. Regular exercise is essential in maintaining muscle mass that helps to burn body fat and boost metabolic rate.
