there is a well known piyut which we recite on the eve of Yom Kippur which states:

Just as the stone in the hands of the mason...

so are we in Your (god’s) hands

We are likened to the stones which are shaped by the Almighty. how might we understand this analogy?

rav leibele eiger was the grandson of the great Posek rabbi Akiva eiger and the son of rav Shlomo eiger, the gilyon Maharsha. rav leibele thus came from the preeminent torah family during what was considered the golden era of torah scholarship, in the late 18th century and early 19th century. rav leibele’s father r’ Shlomo was a mitnagid, famously opposed to the ways of the chassidim and the students of the baal Shem tov.

How then did R’ Leibele come to embrace the ways of the Chassidim? When he was first married and living in Lublin, he began praying in the beit Midrash of the Seer of lublin. in the front corner of that room there was an indent in the wall in the shape of a hand. rav leibele found himself drawn in by this strange imprint. the chassidim in the beit Midrash, taking note of rav leibele’s fascination, began engaging r’ leibele in conversation. they explained to him that this is where the great Seer used to pray, and that he would pray with such intensity that it changed the shape of the wall. Rav Leibele, fixated on the solid wall which had been shaped by prayer and intense devotion, decided at that moment that he had what to learn from the chassidim and their ways, becoming a devoted follower of the Kotzker rebbe. the Seer of lublin had shaped the stone wall, which in turn, shaped r’ leibele as an individual.

We at Kct have achieved something remarkable - we have proven that stones may be formed, arranged and bent to create a place of beauty and of kedusha. We must now allow ourselves, like r’ leibele, to be shaped by those very same stones.

Join me, this year, 5774, as we shape these holy stones and as we enable them to shape our lives. Let us fill our new home with Tefila, Torah and Chesed, and may those acts inspire us, our children and our community to a more meaningful and uplifting existence.

Sincerely,rabbi Shaanan gelman 4

to the Kct community,

there are so many reasons why i consider it a privilege to be part of this wonderful community. however, more than the feelings of friendship, the amazing services and the great people that make up our community, i believe that what makes Kct stand out as a community is the fantastic environment of growth that we have created. being a member of our com-munity means that you have, what psychologist carol dweck has termed, a ‘growth-mindset.’ We - both as individuals and as a collective community - are always looking for ways to grow and improve. be it a new minyan, a new youth program, or a new shiur, not a week has gone by since i have joined the shul that i have not been involved in a new program.

So now i am excited to present to you something which is both an end and a beginning. it is the end of the process of taking all of the new ideas and refining them into the brochure you are now holding. but it is also just the beginning. it is the beginning of a new year, with new growth. in the coming pages you will find learning opportunities for every single member of our community. I invite you to pick out the one that fits your schedule, your interest and the area in which you would like to grow, and join us this year.

Sincerely, rabbi etan ehrenfeld

Welcome Rabbi Ehrenfeld

eitan KatzFebruary 28-March 1eitan learns in the Kollel at the Yeshiva of greater Washington in Silver Spring, Md. his love for learning is well known, and his quiet manner of hasmadah belies the

energy which comes out in his music. eitan is also studying at night in the John’s hopkins School of clinical counseling.

in writing his music, he shows a special regard for words which help us feel the power in the music. carefully chosen from throughout teffilah and tanach, his songs bring out the true meaning of the words. Eitan’s first album, “Eilecha”, which was released in the year 2000, featured him together with his brother Shlomo and his father, the well know chazzan, Avshalom Katz. the wonderfully orchestrated melodies, well placed harmony and blend of beautiful voices made this album an instant hit. his second album, “biglal Avos”, which came out a few years later, is still a top seller and anyone who hears it can instantly see why. Arranged by eitan and his brother Shlomo, the stirring niggunim and upbeat tone are very unique in the world of Jewish music.

eitan’s newest release “eitan Katz, unplugged” is a compilation of nigunim of reb Shlomo carlebach, ztl - some never heard before, and some known, but rarely sung. As is eitan’s trademark style, he sings from a place deep from his neshama in a way that only eitan knows how to sing.

“Shalom Aleichem: laughing in the darkness” tbdA riveting portrait of the great writer whose stories became the basis of the broadway musical “Fiddler

on the roof.” “Sholem Aleichem: laughing in the darkness” tells the tale of the rebellious genius who created an entirely new literature. Plumbing the depths of a Jewish world locked in crisis and on the cusp of profound change, he captured that world with brill iant humor. Sholem Aleichem was not just a witness to the creation of a new modern Jewish identity, but one of the very men who forged it. 8
