Welcome to the Spring 2010 edition of the KCS Informer.

This edition of the KCS Informer is the largest issue yet with 36 pages dedicated to providing you with product information, purchasing guides, feedback on developments at KCS and new best value contracts.

Our Schools Customer Care Survey, now in its 5th year, is your chance to tell us what you think of KCS. I’m pleased to report that over 10% of our customers took the opportunity to reply. We use this feedback to shape our future plans for the business and you will see that a KCS Action List is attached to every section.

How best to deal with the Green Agenda is becoming a popular question for many schools and in this edition we have tried to introduce you to a number of key aspects that should help you in this regard.

We have included details of a number of new OJEU contracts from which your school can benefit: our Mat and Trolley Contract, our IT Recycling (WEEE) Contract, our Kitchen and Dining Contract and our Books Contract.

Our School Shout pages have a variety of good news stories. If your school has a news story that you are proud of, please speak to your sales rep or contact our Customer Care team and they will tell you how your school can be involved.

Once again, thank you for your continued support and if you have any further ideas or suggestions in relation to KCS, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best regards,

Steven Munday KCS General Manager T: 01622 605485 E: [email protected]

We are proud to publish the results of our Autumn 2009 Schools Customer Care Survey over the next 7 pages.

You will see that, without exception, you rated our products, services and customer care very highly. Each tick box question has a summary of the results shown graphically.

Pleased as we are with the results, we are not complacent and you will see that each set of results is complemented by a KCS 2010/11 Action list. This Action List is based around your feed back from the survey.

Deliveries

“ We have been working hard this year to ensure that our in-house and out sourced deliveries are all conducted to the same high standard”.

KCS Action List for 2010/11• Work with customers to try to spread their orders to avoid the highly popular

11:00-12:00 slot where “late” orders miss the Next Day Delivery cut off.

• Spend more time training our warehouse team regarding the packaging of items.

• Ensure that all “FAO” instructions are transcribed from customer orders, resulting in them appearing on our labelling 100% of the time.

• Further publicise our returns process to ensure that goods are returned to us as quickly as possible.

KCS and the Green Agenda

From your feedback we have now branded all our “environment” related products “ECO” and grouped them in a separate section at the front of the new KCS Main Catalogue, due out to schools at the end of March.

The range of products has been enlarged to include recycled products, products produced from sustainable sources and products that will assist you in your environmental aims.

To help you further, KCS is pleased to offer its guide to ECO purchasing & waste reduction. We would like to acknowledge the help of KCC’s ECO-Schools Officer service and the DCSF’s “Top Tips for sustainable purchasing in schools”, in putting together this guide.

Your KCS guide to ECO purchasing & waste reduction

The Green Agenda is important to KCS. As part of KCC’s Commercial Services, we are ISO 14001 accredited, with our own mature EMS arrangements and a number of continual improvement schemes in place.

18

• Audit what is being purchased and how often and how much of that isn’t being used.

Does anyone have any spare? Can anyone use these?

• Where possible, identify those product areas where it is possible to purchase an ECO alternative.

Is there a recycled alternative? Is there a locally sourced alternative?

• Don’t spend hours saving a pound. Think carefully about the total cost of procurement and include yours and your colleagues’ time in that calculation.

Where should I be concentrating my time?

• It is generally acknowledged that the best ECO return can be obtained by focusing time on the areas of the largest possible output over a given time period e.g. energy, use of water, ICT, paper products and furniture.

• Use best practice advice. Every local authority or schoool cluster group will have advice leaflets and case studies which show what is possible.

ECO Purchasing Waste• Audit what is being thrown away, what is

being recycled and what could be recycled.

• Raise awareness of what should be recycled and clearly label both indoor and outdoor bins. Ensure classrooms and offices have separate bins for general waste and recyclables.

• Be aware of material which can’t be disposed of in general waste e.g. batteries, paints, cooking oil and fluorescent tubes. Please see p14 of this KCS Informer for further details of KCS’ new IT Recycling Contract.

• Only print what is needed and wherever possible, print double-sided. For KCS sourced copiers or printers, please contact our Copier Team for advice on double-sided printing or networking.

• Minimise the amount of waste generated from construction and refurbishment projects.

• Donate any used furniture, books or computers for re-use. Ensure that any new recipient has a “no claim right” against you or your school. Particularly important in respect of furniture or IT/Electrical goods.

Your KCS guide to ECO purchasing & waste reduction

19

• Set up a scrap paper box in each classroom or faculty area to reuse paper.

• Use the results of your audit on waste to create a visual representation to aid real understanding.

• Use your school council to carry out a challenge across the age ranges to see how waste can be reduced. You will be surprised by the excellent ideas that this generates!

• Set up a composting system to reduce waste and use it as a teaching tool.

• Spread the word. Simple reminders on light switches and IT kit have all been found to work.

The key to the success of many ECO schools projects, such as the one in Kent where 430 schools in the County are registered as ECO schools, 320 have some kind of award and 47 have the Green ECO Schools flag award, is to get ‘buy in’ throughout the school population. This includes all of the various stakeholder groups which are invariably driven by the pupils who are very often the key ‘champions’.

What could you do?

The list is probably endless. We would love to hear about your ECO initiatives. If you could contact your sales executive or speak to our Customer Care Team with your story and lots of pictures, we will feature them in our next Informer, due out in June this year.

For more information on our simple ECO guide, please contact our Customer Care Team on 0845 270 8811 or speak to your sales executive.

Roz and Nigel Parry of Village Nurseries are delighted to have opened a new purpose built pre-school on the grounds of Red Hill Primary School, in Chislehurst, Kent.

“We are able to offer a high quality education for children between the ages of 2 and 5 years that is both affordable and flexible.

The light and airy architect designed building offers a most child friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Sliding doors that open from the main play room allow children the opportunity to access a safe and secure garden on a daily basis.

We are most grateful to Janine, our sales representative from KCS, for all her support, kindness and professionalism in planning and supplying our pre-school with the most high quality furniture and resources that have created such a magical and special place for children and parents”.

Headteacher Samples Education Gujurat Style!

“ I can’t begin to explain what an incredible experience my week long trip to India was. In partnership with the British Council, I was invited to spend a week at the H B Kapadia New High School in Ahmedabad, Gujurat. Fantastic hospitality aside, I was delighted to be able to spend most of my time with the truly inspirational students and teachers of the three branches of the school.

The children were an absolute delight and were incredibly keen to hear all about life in a school in the UK. We exchanged gifts, photographs and stories which they listened to with great interest. Equally, they told me all about life at their school.

The Memnagar Branch where I spent the majority of my visit was home to 8500 students, 5000 in the morning session (7am-12.30) while 3500 arrived for the afternoon session (12.30-5pm). As you can imagine, change-over time was somewhat hectic!

Average class sizes were 45, with the largest being 55, all in a classroom considerably smaller than the average space at my own school.

Each room was a rectangular space with rows of desks and chairs, a chalk board at the front and not much else.

Yet, never have I seen a group of students so committed to their studies and so keen to succeed. It was truly humbling.

Whilst on my visit I kept a ‘blog’ for the children at my school to share my experiences. This can be seen at http://mrhinindia.blogspot.com

I also conducted a Q&A assembly for my own children live via web cam from India. This was a wonderful way to explore ways in which the two schools can work together.

Since returning to England, both schools have exchanged written pieces of work to display in each other’s schools. There is now also a shared blog that children from both schools use to share ideas and information. We are also hoping to do a few more live video link ups in the future.

The headteacher from HBK is visiting our school in April and we will be reviewing the success of the exchange at that point.

Meanwhile, I can’t wait to get back out there!”

Brookfield Infants School - Exciting News!

The Community Room is ideal for parent meetings, toddler groups, support groups, crèches and could also be used for evening meetings and events.

Pauline Woods (Headteacher) hopes it will provide a place for families to meet both formally and informally and extend their school further out to the community.

“ Everybody is delighted with the result. Staff and families feel valued and everyone agrees that it adds a modern, extra dimension to the school”.

Richard Griffiths - Deputy Headteacher

During the summer holidays, two of Brookfield Infants School’s ‘spare’ rooms were re-furbished to provide a bigger staff room and a Community Room.

New School Building for Upton Primary

Every two classes in KS1 and KS2 share a learning pod and have interconnecting acoustic folding partitions which can be opened so both classes can work together. Outside the classrooms are learning zones with computers that small groups of pupils can use.

The school started replacing the pupils’ furniture while still in the old school as we wanted to have everything ready for setting up in the new school. The colours of the furniture are also reflected on the walls of the classroom – blue for upper KS2; green for lower KS2 and yellow for KS1.

My office was completely ‘kitted’ out by KCS. After discussions with Rob Cox, Area Rep, a drawing and dimensions of the room was given to him and he emailed us different ideas of how the room could be set up. After making my choice we realised that the size of the conference table had to be changed. That was not a problem. The furniture was made and competently fitted by Portsdown Office Ltd. I was very impressed with the way everything went.

We recently had to refit our ICT Suite. After discussion with our ICT Co-ordinator, Rob was able to offer his vast experience to help choose the correct product for our needs.

We would like to say thank you to Rob Cox and all those involved at KCS for helping to make our move a successful one by delivering all our furniture on time”.

Omar Rampersad - Headteacher

“ The children, staff and parents of Upton Primary are absolutely delighted with our new building. ‘Fantastic’, ‘mind blowing’, ‘colourful’ and ‘really amazing’ are some of the adjectives that have been used.

The garden features the design of the five intertwined rings, symbolising harmony between peoples of the five continents. The rings are formed from box plants which will grow into circular hedges. Other plants will be added over the next three years, culminating in a floral Olympic flame in the summer of 2012.

Six enthusiastic gardeners from Year 4 planted the box plants in Term 1 under the guidance of Diana Jones, a local garden designer who has helped to transform the school grounds over the last few years. The children (Megan Platts, Harry Elgar, Rosie Graves, Cameron McKenzie, Megan Dyer and Jamie Goldsack) will all be in Year 6 in 2012, their final year at Swalecliffe.

The Olympic Garden is planted in an area of shrub beds at the front of the school where children, parents and staff will be able to watch it develop in the lead up to 2012. It is very much a case of ‘watch this space!”

Richard Griffiths - Deputy Headteacher

Swalecliffe Community Primary School’s Olympic Garden

34

“ Swalecliffe Community Primary School, along with all the schools in the Canterbury Coastal Partnership, is taking a keen interest in the build up to the Olympic Games in 2012. One of the ideas we have come up with is to plant a small garden on an Olympic theme.

In January, pupils and staff at Joy Lane Primary School enjoyed another of their special themed weeks. This time, Science week.

We were lucky enough to have ‘Ambassadors in Science’ from STEMNET - Dr Ajay Sharman and Dr Gary Robinson (Kent University Biosciences Dept) debated the pros and cons of bacteria. Mr Andrew Berry, Primary Science Adviser from ASK, held two wonderful workshops during the day where all children were fully absorbed with their investigations, which featured in his exciting assembly in the afternoon - so amusing. Chemical Magic with Dr Ellis Gill and Mr William Currie from St Lawrence College ‘wowed’ the children and staff alike with their chemical show. In addition, we had a superb fancy dress of inventions and scientists and Eagle Heights to entertain us with their feathered friends.
