Welcometo KCLSU!
As a King’s student, you’re automatically a part of KCLSU. Your Students’ Union doesn’t just provide activities, spaces and ways to meet people – we’re also your voice, to the university and beyond it. KCLSU is independent of King’s College London and here to make sure you have the best student experience possible.
KCLSU works with King’s to make the changes students want – like providing more affordable accommodation and scrapping re-sit fees.
KCLSU’s Advice Service (kclsu.org/advice) offers free, confidential and impartial advice to help you understand
your academic rights and responsibilities. You elect student representatives for every programme and department, who help you make your voice heard on your education at King’s.
KCLSU spaces on campus give you places to study, socialise, eat and drink at student-friendly prices. Friendly KCLSU Student Centres are on every campus, ready to answer your questions by phone, email or in person, and point you in the right direction.
KCLSU student groups and activities are opportunities to connect and build communities, share experiences and shape the future you want. KCLSU

6 KCLSU | Your Students’ Union
Your Student Officers
As part of KCLSU, you have the power to make change. You can use that power as an individual, with others as part of a bigger campaign and by voting for the students you want to represent you at King’s and beyond.
Everything KCLSU does is led by you – all the way from microwaves in KCLSU spaces to paying all staff the London Living Wage, you decide what your Students’ Union does to make your university experience the best it can be.
You elect Student Officers to lead KCLSU and represent you. Officers campaign on a university and national level to make changes in students’ lives, like making sure hardship funds are available for NHS-funded students, scrapping re-sit fees up of to £200 and securing affordable accommodation for 700 students this year.
What will we do next? Use your power to decide.
Nadine AlmanasfiPresidentStudies: Liberal Arts
[email protected] @kclsu_president
I’m the President of the Students’ Union which means that I am seen as the main point of contact for the University on any student related issues. I (alongside the other Student Officers) focus on empowering students to campaign about issues they care about be they academic, sporting, political or otherwise. I’m here as your elected representative to contact if you need support or advice.
Joe SimpsonVice President for Activities and DevelopmentStudies: Medicine
[email protected] @kclsu_vpad
I’m the lead Officer for everything related to student activities, involvement with KCLSU groups, employability, skills and development. I want to support students taking part in activities, volunteering and sport at KCLSU, and work closely with our student activities and volunteering staff to make sure all our groups are accessible to students.
Get connected! kclsu.org/studentofficers
Tip for FreshersKCLSU has so many student-led Welcome events, there’s something for everyone. Lots of these are completely free, so also a great way to make your budget go further.
Tip for FreshersBest food places around campus: the pop up food stalls that sell falafel, Thai food and Ethiopian coffee outside the Church near Waterloo, Love Walk Café in Denmark Hill, and check out the Waterfront Bar & Kitchen at Strand and Guy’s Bar & Café at Guy’s campus.

Rachel WilliamsVice President for Welfare and CommunityStudies: Neuroscience
[email protected] @kclsu_vpwc
I’m the Officer to go to when it comes to student wellbeing! I work to support and empower all students in our community including International students, as well as students in liberation and interfaith groups. I can also provide help regarding issues affecting student lives outside of university, such as accommodation, and campaigning. It’s my role to promote engagement and build communities of under-represented students in KCLSU.
Sophia KoumiVice President for Education (Health)Studies: Nursing
[email protected] @kclsu_vpeh
I take a lead on working to improve the educational quality and experience for Health Faculty students. I do this by gathering student feedback, course rep feedback, national student surveys (inc. PTES, NSS, PRES and KSS) and national education campaigns, while supporting and working alongside Student Forums, Student Council and campaign reps.
Ben HuntVice President for Education (Arts and Sciences)Studies: Philosophy
[email protected] @kclsu_vpeas
I work on improving the student experience within the Arts & Sciences. This includes making sure our Student Reps are supported and empowered to make changes within their Departments, as well as liaising with College academic staff and course representatives. My main education campaigns involve diversifying the curriculum, making materials accessible, and much more!
Tip for FreshersKnow your limits – that goes for your liver as well as your bank account!
Tip for FreshersTimeout London (timeout.com/London) is a little goldmine of all fun things happening around London. From cheap eats to free museums, it has it all.
Tip for FreshersHave an open mind at KCLSU Welcome Fair and in meeting other students in Societies, you have no idea who you might end up having things in common with!

Making the Most of London
London’s an incredible city to live, study and work in, and KCLSU can help make the most of your time here.
King’s campuses across London – Denmark Hill, Guy’s, Strand and Waterloo – all have a KCLSU Student Centre. Run by Student Staff, KCLSU Student Centres are a one-stop-shop for anything you need to know about life at King’s. Want spaces to study or hang out? You can bring your own food and drink to The Spit at Guy’s Campus and The Lobby at the Strand, and there are microwaves for you to use. KCLSU has 11 activity and meeting rooms students can book: kclsu.org/bookaroom
TravelGet a Student Oyster card for the lowest fares! The Transport for London (TfL) website tfl.gov.uk’s really useful for working out the best way to get somewhere, Google Maps can show you routes on public transport and we like the CityMapper app.But don’t forget walking – it’s the best way to see London and orientate yourself in the city.
Cost of livingLondon’s a lot more affordable if you’re savvy and do some planning ahead. Make the most of student discounts through your NUS Extra card, like 40% off Pizza Express and up to 20% off at Waterfront Bar & Kitchen and Guy’s Bar and Café. It’s always worth asking if shops and restaurants offer a student discount and most arts venues have student schemes.
Food and drink Markets are the cheapest place to buy fresh fruit and vegetables, and you’ll find supermarkets discount food at the end of the day. Taking a bottle of water and some snacks out with you can be a big money-saver, but when you do eat out, make the most of meal deals and special offers. It’s worth knowing that all KCLSU venues serve free cordial.
If you’ve got questions about London life, Student Centres will do their best to help! We’ve put together a Q&A, based on the questions students ask us most often: kclsu.org/welcome

The best way to experience the UK’s culture and everything London has to offer is to get out of your comfort zone, meet people and try something new. Welcome Fair on 18 and 19 September is alcohol-free and an ideal way to find out what Societies, Activity Groups and sports have to offer. But if you’re not at Fair, all those opportunities are still available to you - sign up online when it suits you.
Explore KCLSU and see the International Orientations and Welcome sessions you can join at kclsu.org/welcome/international
International StudentsKCLSU is here to make your student experience at King’s the best it can be, from helping you get to know London, to making new friends and being part of a student community. Your Students’ Union doesn’t just provide activities, sports and ways to meet people – we’re also your voice, to the university and beyond it.
We’re working to improve international students’ experience through research and insight, and we campaign on the things that matter to you. Working with students, we’ve stopped uncapped increases to fees between years and worked with King’s to halve the number of health school staff redundancies.
Find out more about how students lead everything we do at kclsu.org/representingyou KCLSU is independent of King’s and we offer free, confidential and impartial advice on your academic rights and responsibilities. If you need support during your studies: kclsu.org/advice
Joining a KCLSU Society or Activity Group is a really good way to meet people outside your school of study - most of these are free to join and many also organise free events.
With a huge range of Culture, Faith & Spirituality groups as well as Academic Societies, it’s easy to find people who share your interests and values. One World is our annual celebration of culture, faith and diversity, bringing everyone at King’s together.
Whether you want to compete at elite level or just stay healthy, there are sports groups from Athletics to Mountaineering or even Ultimate Frisbee to choose from. If you enjoy sport, but aren’t sure about making a regular commitment, Be Active offers social sports sessions you can join whenever suits you.
Unlocking London events and tours are a fun way to experience London and meet other students – check out View from The Shard, Notting Hill & Portobello Walking Tour, The Lion King at The Lyseum Theatre (for Study Abroad students) and the KCL International Mixer on 15 September. Unlocking London events are a great way to experience London and meet other students. Look out for the Notting Hill & Portobello Walking Tour, the View from The Shard and our London Literary Pub Crawl - a literary walking tour of the taverns and areas that famous writers frequented during their lives.

Postgraduates
KCLSU’s here to help you explore London, connect with other students outside your faculty and extend your professional network. We offer free, confidential advice if you need support during your studies.
Even if you have limited free time, joining a KCLSU Society or Activity Group is a great way to meet people and get more out of London when you’re not studying. You might like the Graduate and Mature Society or the IoPPN Student Forum, but whatever your interest, you’ll find people who share it. As well as KCLSU Welcome Fair on 18 and 19 September, you’ll have another chance to find out what Societies have to offer at the Denmark Hill Fair on 22 September.
Be Active sessions let you get involved in social sport with no need to make a regular commitment – with up to 22 sessions a week, take part when it suits your schedule. If you want to represent your university, King’s takes part in British University Colleges and Sport (BUCS). Or you can cheer on the King’s team as we take on UCL every March in the London Varsity Series.
