On Friday March 23rd, Rushmere and Second Form visited the Polka Theatre to watch a brilliant musical adaptation of Michael Rosen’s ‘Chocolate Cake’. My favourite bit was when the lead character appeared to gobble up a massive chocolate cake! After the show, the director came on stage, with the 3 actors, and informed us that what we had witnessed was actually a dress rehearsal and that they were still trying different things. We had a time for questions and answers with the four of them. He appreciated our feedback to improve before the public debut.

This was followed back at school by a poetry reci-tation competition, where there were two finalists from each class in Rushmere. (Every boy had learned a poem to say to his class teacher over the previous few weeks). Ms McGregor, the judge, was going to choose a First Form winner, a Transition winner and an overall runner up. Ms McGregor gave very help-ful feedback on each boy. Everyone was biting their nails in the moments leading to the final announce-ment. Joseph from my class proudly claimed the First Form prize reciting ‘Hamster, Hamster’ by Joseph Coelho, Peter in THL got the Transition prize and he recited ‘The Listeners’ by Walter De La Mare, and Matteo in 1M was runner up, with his own poem called ‘Trapped in a bottle’. After a short break, each class recited a poem involving every boy. What a day it was! And if I’m honest, better than a triple period of Science!By Arya 1BP

The school chess 1st team this year took on the unprecedented chal-lenge of competing as a prep school in the first division of the U19 Briant Poulter league. They finished the season just before Easter by beating Sutton Grammar School 4½- 1½, thereby securing 5th place out of 12 teams, an unbelievable effort. Well done to the team: Ranesh, Shahvez, Shivam, Luca, Caleb, Sen and Diego. There were some incredible indi-vidual and team performances during the season to look back on.At the other end of the holiday, four boys (Ranesh, Shahvez, Shivam and Luca) travelled to Hertford College, Oxford, to defend the English Chess Federation U13 National competition. The King’s team finished half a point ahead of a strong St Paul’s team to take the title for a third succes-sive year, another tremendous achievement.I have also had news of some individual successes over the holiday: broth-ers Shahvez and Shahyan scored a family double, taking first place in the U12 and U8 sections of the West Surrey Championship; meanwhile, as the Delancey UK Chess Challenge moves into the regional stages, Sanjit won his U8 megafinal to claim the coveted “supremo” title. Well done to all our chess players!

amateur – Somebody who participates in an activity without making a living from it.

From the Latin amo (“I love”, “I like”).

You don’t have to be bad at something if you are an amateur, it just means you are doing it because you like doing it. Professional, the word for somebody who earns a living from the same activity, comes from the Latin word profiteor (“I openly admit”).
