doesn’t end there. The kitchens and bathrooms featured in this
issue showcase well-designed and loved spaces with top-of-
the-line products and materials. Turn to page 30 to see what I
mean. But if it’s your outdoor space that needs more TLC than
anything else, pay special attention to our 2012 Gardens of the
Year winners. They’ll leave you with so many ideas that you
might not know where to start (so call one of them!).
Speaking of “new and improved,” I’ve decided to finally use
my married name within the magazine. Yes, I’ve been married
for about three-and-a-half years (so technically it’s not “new”)
and figured it was about time. Now, with that off my chest, I’m
going to go back to enjoying the great outdoors.
Cheers to fall weather!
MY LITTLE FAMILY AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO BE
outdoors. We usually strap Madeline in the stroller (or Baby
Bjorn), grab Truman’s leash and head out the door for a nice
leisurely stroll (specifically in Loose Park, where my husband,
Kevin, proposed). The heat has finally subsided where we can
do this more than once a month.
One place the proverbial heat hasn’t subsided is in the
kitchen. Something “new and improved” is always going on
there, and in this issue, we have quite the list of latest and
greatest products on the market today. But not to play favorites
(as a mom, I’ve learned that Truman still needs a healthy dose
of attention, too), we’ve also compiled numerous bathroom
and outdoor living products, pages 38 and 56 respectively, that
I’d absolutely love to have — and you will too. But my wish list

Plum, sage, mango and raspberry ___ that’s the juicy
mix of color that one Sunset Hill family prefers. Inside
the circa-1910 two-story home that has been a
comfort to the Winters since moving in 12 years ago,
the riotous palette has been perfect, especially when
all three of the college-age kids were younger.
The generously sized house has four bedrooms
and two half baths plus an entire playroom on
the third floor. It was in great shape, but the
Winters decided to put their stamp on the house,
personalizing it with pops of bright color everywhere.
“I think of this house as Pee-Wee’s Playhouse ___
we all like color, so why not live in it?” asks Wynne
Winter, sinking into a big bear-sized wing chair in the
heart of the home: a plum-colored kitchen/family
room. It’s always been the family’s place to gather.
“The space is so big we could fit an entire basketball
team in here with no problems,” she says.
A large butter-colored sectional that Wynne
thought would be too big for the room was actually a
great fit for the otherwise sparely furnished setting.
Painting the entire room a deep plum helps showcase
the colored kitchen cabinets in a space that’s basically
clean and uncluttered. The sage-colored kitchen
anchors one end of the room.
“This whole space was already here when we

moved in, but we remodeled extensively. We put in
new windows, removed the fireplace now housed
outside on the patio and added French doors opening
onto a multilevel deck,” she explains.
When the troops gather during the holidays, this
space swells to accommodate. Does Wynne do the
cooking? Absolutely. “I still love to, and this kitchen
makes it easy. We are all tall, so when we remodeled,
we made sure that the counters were high enough,”
she adds.
The island’s unpolished granite is impervious to
heat, and the deep, double stainless steel sinks are as
handsome as they are functional. Shirley Allen, owner
of The Light Shop, helped with the lighting design.
“She suggested the lighting throughout the home,
and these contemporary pendants are perfect,”
Wynne says.
One aspect of this room is the abundant amount of
light. “We decided with such a pretty backyard, being
able to look out would be an advantage,” she adds.
Through the family-room windows, an exotic wood
deck overlooks a brick patio segueing down to the pool.
Wynne relaxes into the space that has given her so
many memories over the years. “It’s a great house
and very accommodating for everyone who comes
and goes,” she says. “We’ve definitely enjoyed it.”

ometimes a remodel is not a good thing. Such was the case when
Elizabeth Goltz Rishel, certified kitchen designer and owner of Design by
Orion, first encountered this 1924 Tudor home with a 1980s-style kitchen.
“The previous owners did a lot of DIY projects and cut a lot of corners,” she says.
“The homeowner wanted to honor the original home designed by architect
Edward Buehler Delk, AIA and bring the kitchen back to that style.”

Above... White cabinetry throughout
the kitchen blends in with the wall

lots of storage while keeping the look
clean. “There is symmetry to the look,
but once you open the doors, that’s

spaces tailored for specific storage,”
Rishel describes. The hollow chestnut

a linear grain for a more traditional look. A Wolf oven is nestled into the structure.
Drawers and shelving around the island provide ample storage. The island sits nine inches off
the floor, and the wiring goes through the four legs to create a sleek piece of furniture.
Below left... Gothic arches in the glass mirror the arches on the home’s front door.
The crotch-cut mahogany backsplash adds interest to the hutch without introducing a
new wood species. The piece offers lots of storage and display space.
Below right... The breakfast room off the kitchen doubles as a dining space and home office.
Chartreuse dining chairs connect with the colors in other rooms of the house and offer the homeowner
many options for changing accents with the seasons, such as teals in summer and reds in winter.
Taking into account the homeowner’s
love of natural materials, the home’s
architectural details and the functions of the
space, they worked with Dave Dorau of
Norton & Schmidt Consulting Engineers to
design a plan to remove several load-
bearing walls to open up the space. Arches
throughout the house were reintroduced
into the kitchen and breakfast room area.
Hidden drawers, featuring the pressure-
activated Servo Drawer System, add
function to the sweeping space under the
stairs and keep paperwork out of sight.
In this kitchen, the refrigerator becomes
a natural focal point. Altenhofen Cabinets
took the homeowner’s inspiration photos
of an antique armoire and created the
encasing for the refrigerator from salvaged
walnut beams that were milled into lumber
to create the surround and door fronts
for the appliance. Various wood species
throughout the space keep the look neutral
yet interesting. “When mixing woods, there
needs to be enough contrast between
the wood tones to create an acquired-
over-time look,” Rishel says.

light color palette of cool grays and muted blues. A four-inch-
deep knee wall was built behind the vanity with a ledge running
the length of the cabinetry, accented with translucent glass
tiles. The floating vanity was
central to Kirsop’s vision of
making the space feel lighter
since a vanity that extends
to the floor can create a
heavier feel. The robust
shape of the countertop
lavatory sinks, which are
made from a slab of Carrara
marble, make a striking
statement in the room.
Kirsop selected a
rectangular, diagonal floor
design to elongate the
space instead of using little
squares. The bathroom was
originally four feet shorter,
so the space for the shower
was extended by following
the roofline out. Inside the
glass-paneled shower, which
is flanked on each side
by showerheads, there are
angled corners to make
space for the faucet and
plumbing since this side
utilizes an outside wall.
Carrara marble also was
used in the shower as
subway tiles.
In each bathroom, the
unique sinks became the
focal point in each design,
adhering to Kirsop’s basic principle when remodeling small spaces:
“You want to focus on one ‘wow factor’ so the eye isn’t all over
the place. One element should become the main feature.”
OCTOBER 2012 •• 49
When space is at a premium, designing a bathroom that is both
practical and pleasing to the eye takes on greater importance. In
fact, designing a small space can translate into more discerning
decisions about layout and
materials to make every
square inch count. Donna
Kirsop, CKBR, with Schloegel
Design Remodel recreated
two bathrooms that prove
diminutive size doesn’t mean
design has to suffer.
Measuring only 3 by 6
feet, a petite powder room in
a Mission Hills home is the
smallest space Kirsop has
ever worked on. The room
originally housed a vanity
that overwhelmed the space,
so she installed a floating
countertop with a vessel sink
made of onyx. “When the sun
shines through the stained
glass window, it glows since
onyx is somewhat opaque.”
The amber-colored vessel
complements the warm
tones from the mahogany
countertop, embossed vinyl
wallpaper and natural light
from the stained glass
window that is original to
the house. “All of the pieces
really came together and
stayed true to the style of the
home,” Kirsop says.
While the powder room
evokes a classic, Old World feel, Kirsop created a more
contemporary design in a 5- by 10-foot bathroom in Fairway.
She used furniture-style cabinetry for the vanity, staining the
maple wood a deep espresso to stand out against the otherwise
two small bathrooms take onbig style thanks to design tricks
that create impact.S t o ry by M i u n G l e e s o n | P h o t o s by J a m e s M a i d h o f

In Geri Higgins’ stylish world, a homeowner’s lifestyle is not a canned experience.
“Every individual is unique, and when a client gives you the responsibility of designing something,
that stand-apart element must be captured,” says Higgins, president and chief executive officer
of Portfolio Kitchen & Home.
Case in point: the Johnson home in Leawood’s Royce neighborhood. Mara and Chris Johnson,
physicians and empty nesters, have overhauled nearly every major room and living space in their
home.
What started three years ago as a quest to update kitchen cabinets has snaked its way through
the residence and landed on the second floor’s master bath. Part of a stunning new master suite,
the 250-square-foot bath is a study in balance with color, style and texture blending in the spa-like
environment to give the homeowners exactly what they envisioned.

Story by Kimberly Winter Stern Photos by Chad Jackson
Everyday rituals are elevated with thisreimagined bathroom.
88474.9.1.052:Layout 1 9/6/12 1:51 PM Page 1
The intimate sanctuary, which features cream walls finished with silver-gray glazed custom-
curved front double vanities and custom maple cabinetry, emulates Higgins’ mantra for good design.
“Your surroundings can be beautiful, but they must elevate life and make it meaningful,” she says.
The Johnson bath project, executed by lead designer Lindsay DeViney, is based on the room’s
normal rituals and routines. Higgins and DeViney were careful to enhance the bathroom’s
functionality and create a contemporary suite experience with a seamless flow between it and the
master bedroom. The exquisite handmade Italian tile on the floor, in the shower and on the front
of the soaking tub is a beautiful aesthetic that evokes a peaceful quality.
Architectural detailing throughout the bath, such as arches that tie into one another and
cabinetry curves that are a continuation of the master bedroom’s, are classic and Old World
components freshened to empower the space. The shower’s tile emulates sea glass in a
sophisticated interpretation and evokes memories from an Italian sojourn taken by the Johnsons
where they became enamored with certain European design aspects. “This reminds me of Italy,”
Mara says of the tiled faux window in the expansive shower.
A chandelier Mara happily discovered online punctuates the space, while the cabinetry
has distinctive features that aren’t visible but represent things important to the homeowners’
experience. Specialty custom-designed storage and security features, along with integrated
electrical outlets in selected drawers, are subtle but powerful features essential to the Johnsons’
everyday rituals.
The completed Zen master bath, splashed with rich and soothing green accents, is an
extension of the Johnsons’ lifestyle, including their daughter’s. “The first thing she does when
visiting from medical school is study in the tub, watch television or just relax,” Mara says. “The
master bath is somewhere we all find comfort.” Even the couple’s son, a neuroscience researcher
at Washington University in St. Louis, loves the bathroom’s delicious calming effect.
And as far as Higgins is concerned, that’s a high compliment for a designer. “Good design
is a journey, the beginning of which is listening and learning how your clients live,” she says.
“Then — then — you pay attention along the way.”

Designed concurrently with his Tuscan-style house, homeowner and landscape architect
Reed Dillon’s property features a dreamy mix of extensive patios, charming garden
structures, colorful plantings eight months of the year and the sound of water present
everywhere. Set on rolling topography in semirural Lawrence among mature trees,
Dillon played with perennials bursting in front of backdrop yews and box hedges and
incorporated architectural elements throughout for year-round interest. Stack limestone
retaining walls define upper terraces and make clear transitions to the back of the
property. An Adirondack-style pergola and a whimsical treehouse with spiral staircase
make special places to visit and enjoy the varied views of the garden.

What started as a simple landscape update grew into an overhaul, starting with a master plan from
landscape architect Katie Martinovic to give the homeowners an idea of their property’s full potential.
The first phase included a pondless water feature near an existing fire pit, a built-in barbecue grill area,
custom garden swing and new front landscaping as well as additional plantings in the backyard for
screening. Soon thereafter, the front of the home received additional plantings and a flagstone patio for
two Adirondack chairs, while the backyard got a grotto-style spa with surrounding trellis and flagstone
patio. An arched trellis entry and plantings in the side yard added the finishing touches.

While the homeowner resides in Denver and uses this Prairie Village residence
as his weekend retreat, it originally didn’t look like it fit the neighborhood.
Needing a cottage feel, the exterior received a new driveway, sidewalk,
guttering and stone work, and new landscaping to wrap around the house. A
bluestone patio added onto an existing patio expands outdoor living space,
and complete irrigation and night lighting lower maintenance and increase
usage. Designer Gary Weidenbach kept baseline plantings that were in good
health but renovated the beds to include a large variety of unique perennials,
which have matured nicely since installation last summer.

Landscape designer Steven Heichel had an excellent
opportunity to make a statement with this Mission Hills
corner lot and recently constructed home, but design
challenges included screening the intersection, providing
privacy to the backyard and incorporating year-round
color. A large berm of leatherleaf viburnum and mixed
plantings provide the corner screening, while a hedge of
mature upright junipers along the back and side offer
much-needed privacy. Formal hedges of boxwood supply
year-round structure to the landscape, while other plantings
bring seasonal interest and ever-changing visual delight.
Spring pops with magnolias, dogwood, redbuds and
azaleas; summer bursts with hydrangeas, roses, perennials
and summer annuals; fall is accented with mums, kale and
brightly colored leaves throughout many of the trees and
shrubs; and winter still maintains interest through use of
extensive evergreen hedges.

Sited atop natural limestone bluffs overlooking Lake Winnebago, designer Gary Lueckenotto
designed the space to accommodate parties of 70 or more. A central dance floor and full
kitchen separated by a 20-foot wall of glass doors are perfect for entertaining. Moreover, a
five-level patio and infinity-edge, all-season pool (which had to be built before the home’s
foundation was complete due to limited access) are jaw-dropping additions to the site,
highlighted by bronze sculptures, a spiral staircase, granite rock outcroppings, accent tropicals
and a hammock suspended by custom-built palm trees. The space is fully automated, including
fire bowls, surround sound, lighting and concealed mosquito-control emitters.

Starting with an existing fire pit in her clients’ backyard, landscape architect Katie Martinovic’s job was
to enhance the area with plantings and a water feature. But like most projects, it expanded to a
complete redesign that truly invites people outdoors. The water feature is actually “pondless,” a stone
outcropping that hugs the edge of the patio, but the sound of running water bathes the entire area. A
built-in grill with countertop space was added onto the patio for easy food prep, and a swing was
installed in the yard overlooking new plantings. Near the house for easy access, a trellis encircles a
sunken hot tub. Creeping thyme between the surrounding flagstones gives it a soft, natural feel.

Embracing the site’s steep terrain, designer Dave Barthell incorporated
five unique levels for lounging and entertaining. Elevated stone-
covered pool walls and boulder outcroppings give swimmers the
illusion of floating in a canyon river, while underwater stone benches
and ledges make great sunbathing destinations. Four waterfalls
create sound and motion on the indigo blue water. Technology is
incorporated into the space, with automated fire bowls and a fire pit
extending usage of the space after sunset, and inconspicuous
speaker rocks offering background music to this outdoor experience.

This elaborately designed outdoor living space features a formal,
circle-themed pool as the centerpiece. A raised, infinity-edge,
artisan-crafted glass tile spa on one end stands opposite a
shallow reef area at the other. Designer Kelly VanElders overcame
the challenge of creating a perfectly level edge for the display
mode of the spa, which evenly distributes water 360 degrees.
Incorporated into the backdrop of the pool is a raised stone fire
and water element, with the perimeter of the patio further
enhanced by landscaping and LED lighting. Completing the
outdoor living space are an outdoor kitchen; covered dining area
with heaters, a fan, lighting and audio/video components; and an
upper deck with a custom curved metal staircase. The space is
fully automated via iPhone or iPad.

From a flat, wooded lot scraped of all topsoil, homeowner Bobbi
Cummings created this winding garden replete with 175 different
plants and several distinct areas, each with its own personality
that together congruently flow, including a spa deck, pergola and
pond. A path extends from the front of the house to the back,
introducing surprises along the way, while multiple seating areas
encourage use of the entire space. There’s even a playhouse
equipped with its own deck and garden. Berms create privacy
without the use of a fence, and their raised beds allow for greater
plant selection due to water issues on the property. Nighttime
lighting extends the hours of enjoyment, but any time of day, this
garden is warm and welcoming.

At the heart of Kurt Suchomel and Peggy Ward’s historic downtown Lee’s Summit
home is a century-old cottonwood tree that provides much shade for the more than
200 hosta, caladiums and ferns that enjoy respite from the sun. Three outdoor living
areas define space: a covered deck with a panoramic view of the expansive yard; a
courtyard lodge built of rough-sawn cedar featuring an outdoor fireplace; and the
“chapel,” a gabled structure home to two family weddings. While flora and garden art
are the highlight of various planting beds, plenty of wide-open space calls the family
and their dogs to simply enjoy playing on the lawn.
