Snoopy is arguably the most famous dog on Earth. He’s one of the main characters of “Peanuts,” a cartoon that was syndicated in almost every US newspaper from the 1950 to as recent as the 2000. Charles M. Schulz considered himself a nondescript person until he started drawing “Peanuts.” His career as a cartoonist suffered count-less rejections from publishers. Being unsuccessful in a job he was so passionate about dragged him into a deep slump. However, even in what seemed like such a hopeless situation, he made a brave attempt to improve his lot and decided to create characters out of his per-ceived mediocrity. The public was sympathetic and enthusiastic over a cartoon that featured an ordinary boy and his canine soul mate. His honest attempt became the springboard for his success. How about honestly facing the feelings that you have been avoiding? Maybe it could lead you to the path to success.

When spring comes, the sun rises earlier and sets later than before. The days grow longer and the night shorter. In the middle of a clear spring day when the world is full of

light, we feel infinite positivity inside us and are inspired to think of consistency, order, harmony, light, reason, fraternal love, and friendship. Every introduc-tory book on hygiene recommends that you bask in the sunshine more often. Sunlight on a spring day can nourish your body, strengthen your cells, and energize you. The energy and vitality that the sunlight provides you with a boost for your immune system to fight dis-ease. Above all, sunlight makes the power of positivity grow inside you. It’s not only humans who are affected by spring. As more and more sunlight embraces the earth, the ani-mals that have been hunkering down during the winter quicken themselves and start widening their activity radius. The seeds that have fallen on the soil push out fresh shoots, and the trees pump sap up with greater force, growing leaf buds and flower buds and making them blossom. The camellia, plum flowers, and corne-lian cherry flowers that bloomed before others have already fallen, and in their stead, cherry blossoms simultaneously burst into bloom on the South Island. With the bloom of spring flowers, blessings of life get dispersed through the world. When the air on a spring day gets filled with sunlight, greater vitality spreads over the earth, shining on ani-mals and plants alike. Sunlight affects the expansion of life. This is the reason that hope grows in you and that you develop a more positive and optimistic attitude in your daily life. Don’t let failure get you down.

Writer Seok-ju Jang

Seok-ju Jang loves music, libraries, and taking walks. He writes poetry and books covering the humanities. His poetry books include <Sunday and Bad Weather>, and he has also written other books such as <The Humanities in Everyday Life> <Things of the Philosopher> and <About Love>.

Don’t sigh or stoop low just because you have nothing. Spring has come! Spring gives pleasure to all things, and all life is stirring in the spring. Hermann Hesse said that we should listen to the whispers of the spring: “Any boy or girl knows what spring says. Live, stretch, bloom, hope, love, rejoice, let your buds grow, and don’t be afraid of life and give your best.” Passages like these stimulate positivity within us. Consequently, power bursts into existence, enabling you to beat the feeling of uneasiness inside you and rise above it.The days of spring are bright, pleasant, and mysteri-ous. There is nothing more unfortunate than being unable to get the pleasant sweetness of the sun and the

Want to Get Better Results? Be More Positive

joy of spring flowers. Let yourself enjoy happiness like a bear in the afternoon of a spring day. Put aside petty little worries. Laughter belongs to those who can take on a more positive disposition and enjoy happiness. Happy are those who can receive the power of positivi-ty from the invigorating energy of spring days and take care of their business with that power. In my experience, negative attitudes not only make you skeptical of the results, but they also make the process feel more burdensome. The moment you think you cannot do it, the job actually becomes something you

cannot do. Let go of negative words and negative thoughts. If you believe in the power of positivity, you will not become pessimistic easily: indeed, you will be able to deliver yourself from the fear of failure. Even when it comes to trivial jobs such as house cleaning, those who do the job humming to themselves are going to find it less painful and less tiring than those who do it with reluctance. The same goes for larger tasks or projects; those who believe in the power of positivity and do their utmost in their given circumstances pro-duce better results those who do not. When you start work, imagine the best results possible and tell yourself that you are going to achieve them. He who doesn’t try, doesn’t fail, but nor can he achieve anything. Only those who dream eagerly and try their best can make it. This is the very spirit of positivity. The spirit of positivity is certainly one of the most pre-cious gifts given to us. Fill your mind with the power of positivity before you start work.

In the limelightThe Joy of Communicating

Music critic and professor Il-bum Jang shares the energy of optimism with people via classical music as a medi-um. One of the media is KBS Classic FM’s <Il-bum Jang’s Family Music>,

which he has hosted over the last seven years. Every day he opens a day of listeners with classical music accompanied by his pleasant voice and volubility and easy-to-understand explanation. The two hour-long journey of classical music with him is always pleasing and comfortable. “I start every morning with pleasing energy. When my body and mind are in a good condition, broadcasting is also a pleasure. This meets with classical masterpieces, naturally creating synergy. This is probably the reason that listeners say they get energy from the show.” Pro-fessor Jang definitely takes a positive view of life, but he always can find a reason to think positively. At the same time, he always keeps in mind the number of cases. By predicting the worst, he can prepare for it and, by doing so, he can be satisfied to a certain degree. In other words, at least that won’t be the worst. “You can’t do it perfectly from the beginning. A posi-tive mindset can also be learned and trained. With utmost efforts, you will get a higher sense of achieve-ment and raise the level of satisfaction when you con-sider the worst case. Through such training, you can

raise your self-esteem and sense of pride. Over time, you can even raise the strength of your mind with the power of optimism. He takes an interest in various areas and so he always feels that there are never enough hours in the day. Nevertheless, professor Jang lives an energetic life every day as he has trained his mind with optimism. He had three dreams: Becoming a vocalist, a music critic and a reporter for <Gaeksuk>, a music and per-forming arts journal. If he can’t realize all of them, he wanted to become at least one of them. “I gave up entering a music college due to opposition from my parents but I never gave up becoming a vocal-ist. So, while studying Russian at a university, I received vocal lessons from my acquaintance from the National Chorus. As soon as I graduated from univer-sity, I entered <Gaeksuk> and really enjoyed my job as a reporter. Yet, I could never brush off my interest in the stage, so I learned vocal music when I studied in Russia.”Over the next two decades, professor Il-bum Jang real-ized his dreams. Of course, this wasn’t easy. That was a continuation of challenges and hardships. It was pain-ful when he faced situations he couldn’t resolve on his own, yet he never fell into despair. Whenever he faced a challenge, he responded to it bravely, thinking that this challenge will be followed by good things. In a nutshell,

“Recharge your hope with the power of optimism”

Music critic Il-bum Jang

Music critic and professor Il-bum Jang always looks energetic. Interested in many areas and engaged in various jobs, he nevertheless never seems tired. What has made this possi-ble is the optimism mind training he has long conducted. Professor Il-bum Jang transmits hope on the melody of classical music. The energy of his optimism offers us all hope.

Il-bum Jang

Music critic Il-bum Jang hosts KBS Classic FM’s <Il-bumJang’s Family Music> and MBC’s <TV Art Stage> and is an adjunct professor in the Department of Postmodern Music at Kyung Hee University and a member of the Korea Opera Festival Committee. His work involves lecturing, writing, and commentating on classical music concerts.

he could realize his dreams by combining his hard working with the power of optimism. “Life has its ups and downs, so we don’t need to be too sad. The most important thing is to have a positive atti-tude to life. With such an attitude, you can feel at ease

and work better. Even at the time of frustration, you can overcome it faster with the power of optimism. I hope people train their positive mind. We can make a world where you can share positive energy with each other.”

A better future The Joy of Communicating

Creating a Happy Workplace Together

General Affairs Team Manager Sang-hoon Han, Human Resources Team Assistant Managers Yoo-mi Kim / Chan-ho Jung

When a company has a bright and positive organizational culture, employees can be happy, and the company can advance. Let’s meet KCC’s Human Resources Team and General Affairs Team that are leading the way in creating a positive organizational KCC culture.

this to prove a great help in figuring out where any specific job is in the workflow and what jobs are per-formed before or after it.” The second value pursued in KCC’s organizational culture is “motivation through reasonable reward.” Its logic is that if employees can get a fair evaluation and proper compensation according to the jobs they perform, they will be able to work more happily. A reward system that allows reasonable compensation is one such example.KCC also provide unstinting support for the health and well-being of KCC employees. This is because healthy minds and bodies eventually lead to an improvement in their level of engagement at work. The General Affairs Team helps employees lead healthy and positive lives as well as increase organi-zational cooperative spirit by operating in-house clubs and providing convenient facilities. What’s more, the General Affairs Team plans and runs social contribution activities so that employees can volun-tarily participate in donation and sharing activities,

thereby raising their pride in and their satisfaction with the company.Communication with employees, above anything else, is crucial to improving the completeness of organiza-tional culture and increasing employees’ satisfaction with it. For instance, Dr. KCC, which was introduced in 2010 with the aim to hear the voices of employees at companys across the country, serves as a great ave-nue for communication. Employees’ grievance coun-seling, feedback, and suggestions are shared so that they can lead improvement activities based on such information. Assistant manager Chan-ho Jung who is observing the pleasant change from the coal face, expressed his determination to make efforts to realize “open per-sonnel management,” saying, “The name ‘human resource affairs’ is a hybrid name using ‘human resources’ and ‘affairs’. Going forward, I will listen to the employees more attentively and pay close atten-tion to their opinions, and with that, I will make KCC a happy workplace.”

K CC’s General Affairs Team and Human Resources Team try their best to make sure all KCC employees work cheerful-ly, with both their bodies and minds healthy. The employees are their cus-

tomers, so to speak. The two teams work together with the same goal of establishing a bright and posi-tive organizational culture. The organizational culture that KCC aims to establish has two core values. The first value pursued in KCC’s organizational cul-ture is the pursuit of a increased productivity through work efficiency. The aim is to create a work environ-ment where work and life are in balance, by encour-aging employees to leave the office on time and to use their annual leave entitlements. Manager Sang-hoon Han in the General Affairs Team said that it’s impor-

tant to focus on improving and sustaining quality work, rather than simply having a time-based approach. “We don’t just encourage employees to leave the office on time. Our responsibilities also include creat-ing a work environment where they can work as effi-ciently as possible in a given time. We constantly seek ways to improve their work productivity and perfor-mance. We are working to come up with ways to cut out unnecessary meetings and stimulate the use of groupware meeting committees in order to enhance work efficiency. In addition, we are reorganizing existing team-specific work manuals according to workflows e.g. purchasing, technology, production, process, distribution, marketing, design, technical support, quality/environment and sales. KAC Automotive glassKAC’s automotive glass secures a clear view of the driver against the wind, rain, and dust while driving, and protects pas-sengers from external impact. KAC auto-motive glass has passed every interna-tional test, such as the glass strength measurement test, penetration and mod-ification test, and SAM impact test, and has also received various types of system certification.

KCC windows and doors“Windows and doors” generally refer to windows and doors that are installed at the opening part of the wall to compart the inside and outside of the building. Windows and doors block external air and keep the indoor environment pleas-ant as part of the external wall structure. They ensure the beautiful appearance of the building as well. KCC’s PVC windows and doors are an eco-friendly product that strengthens wind resistance, air-tightness, water-tightness, insulation, and sound arresting. It has acquired the Eco-friendly Mark.

Panorama sunroofMore and more panorama sunroofs are being applied to cars throughout the world, covering the entire ceiling part of the vehicle with transmitting window glass. KAC’s panorama sunroofs provide excellent lighting and ventilation and improve safety using transmitting win-dow glass instead of steel sheet. They also provide a pleasant driving environment with a sense of wide openness and priva-cy with KCC’s privacy glass.

3TOP system3TOP, which was first developed in Korea by KCC, is a sys-tem that combines the technical skills of three windows and doors components, window frame, glass and sealant. KCC contributes greatly to saving energy of buildings with e-Glass which saves heating cost during Winter and e-Max, a four-season complex functional Low-e glass which not only has excellent insulation function but also an advantage to save cooling costs in Summer with shield-ing performance.

Exploring ProductsThe Joy of Learning

Automotive glass ensures a driver’s safety and completes a vehicle’s elegant appearance. In addition, windows and doors are used for efficient cooling and heating by preventing an energy leak from the inside, as well as for imparting a beautiful external appearance.Let’s look at KAC’s automotive glass and KCC’s windows and doors that are noted for their excellent functions and design.

KCC, the Only 3TOP System Direct Producer in KoreaKCC is the only direct 3TOP System producer in Korea, providing window frame, glass and sealant, a window’s three main ele-ments as a set. This system maximizes the insulation, airtight-ness, and sound arresting properties of the windows and doors, by systematizing windows and doors, glass, and sealants with the best technology, product, and quality. KCC low-E glass, one of the 3TOP system components, helps save heating cost in winter owing to excellent insulation perfor-mance, and provides an excellent dew condensation prevention effect when stacking glass in multiple layers. The system is suit-able for house lighting with a high visible ray penetration ratio, and blocks unpleasant cold radiation near the windows in winter, as well as providing a pleasant indoor environment. Windows and doors offer excellent properties and strength. KCC has secured 5 windows and doors performance, wind resistance, airtightness, water-tightness, insulation, and sound arresting by improving continuous technical development and quality improvement and improved quality using the Pb (lead)-free eco-friendly product.

Low-e Coated Glass EnhancesHeating and Cooling Efficiency KCC is contributing to saving energy in buildings with their low-e coated glass products. “e-Glass” improves insulation perfor-mance by preventing heat loss during winter season, and “e-Max” enhances not only insulation performance in winter, but also solar shading one in summer.KCC’s newly developed product “e-Glass Hard & Durable”(e-glass HD) has significantly strengthened its durability so that it can replace imported hard low-e coated glass which is easy to handle. Because e-Glass HD has better insulation performance, thereby KCC's e-glass HD can protect the Korean domestic mar-ket from imported hard low-e coated glass. In addition, KCC has around twenty more low-e coated glass products differentiated as transparency and color, which gives architects diversity in the design of buildings.KCC is also striving to expand the area of coated glass business. For the development of automotive coated glass, IR reflective coated glass will increases the driver's convenience by blocking solar rays, and electrically heatable glass will improves safety with anti-fogging and deicing capabilities. KCC is also working hard to develop various coating technologies such as anti-reflection, high reflection, EMI shielding, electrically conducting coating and color coating for electronics and home appliances, and so on.

Panorama sunroof increases a Sense of Vehicle OpennessA sunroof makes lighting and ventilation inside the vehicle easy, by replacing the steel sheet in the vehicle ceiling with transmit-ting window glass. To date, only a small sheet of glass (a size of 45x80cm) has ever been attached to the first-row ceiling. Howev-er, the size has gradually become larger due to technological advancements and customer requirements. The word “panora-ma” means “wide-angle view” and has a variety of representa-tions depending on the type and function of window glass being applied. There are three types of panorama roofs, which vary according to the number of transmitting window glass-1 piece panorama roof that the entire ceiling part is covered with one sheet of transmitting window glass, or 2 or 3-piece panorama that is covered with two or three sheets of transmitting window glass. Depending on the opening type, there are movable, pop-up, and folding type. The European market, which emphasizes lighting, prefers the 1 piece panorama roof, whereas the Asian market prefers the movable type as it emphasizes design. The safety issue has drawn attention as the size of the panorama sun-roof increases. Therefore, the number of vehicles that replace tempered glass with laminated glass increases, so that shards of broken glass are not scattered. In addition, a quieter driving environment can generally be implemented using the sound insulation film, and products equipped with more diverse functions can be produced using the transmissivity variable functional film*, which cannot be imple-mented using tempered glass, as well as sound insulation and thermal insulation. As vehicle’s fuel efficiency can be improved and air conditioning load can be reduced using those functions, the technology will be required by the electric vehicle (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV)*, which are highlighted as a new para-digm in the future car industry.

In automobiles, safety glass is an essential part to secure a clear view and safety. In step with the evolution of the automobile, safety glass has also continuously strengthened its func-tionality, including anti-frost heating, display,

UV blocking and lightweight. Such outstanding inno-vations in safety glass made by Hyundai Motor Group is based on the established partnership between Namyang R&D Center and KAC. “I have designed safety glass over 20 years and I have worked with KAC from the time when KAC was KCC Safety Glass Division. The strengths of KAC include fast judgment and drive. Due to frequent changes in design, we cannot avoid tightly-scheduled tests and urgent meetings, and KAC has shown fast responses and feedback. The completeness of the results satis-fies us.”Tae-soo Jung, senior research engineer and automo-tive glass expert of Namyang R&D Center who has designed automotive glass over 20 years stresses the importance of keeping in tune with each other and good teamwork. Whenever a new vehicle development project is launched, KAC joins from the outset and works to respond to country-specific legal and certification issues and share ideas about reducing costs and weight. KAC not only discusses with the center about solutions for problems found in previous vehicle models, but it also closely cooperates with the center for new technology development. The new anti-frost front windshield applied to the RBr (strategic local model in Russia) is best practice, showing the clear synergy between the two R&D organizations and the strength of their relationship. “In countries with a long and cold winter such as Rus-sia and Canada, it’s important to defrost front wind-shields. The existing technology defrosts only those areas that are actually touched by the wipers, which is not enough for such harsh environments. This is why we worked with KAC to develop an anti-frost front windshield that removes frost in the entire area of the windshield. In the summer of 2013, we entered the cold lab of 30-40 degrees below zero wearing short-sleeves and conducted tests there shivering with cold. It’s now a good memory that we share.”

The new anti-frost front windshield led to an increase in the automaker’s sales in Russia and KAC also achieved increased profitability. This is remembered as one of the best practices for shared growth. This also shows the unlimited potential coming from the partnership between KAC and Namyang R&D Center. True partners not only work together for the present, but they also dream of the future together. Jung bol-sters KAC’s innovation together, while he draws the future automobiles that Hyundai Motor Group will make. “We want to develop a windshield of which the entire area is a screen based on augmented reality based on our own technology. The head-up display we devel-oped together with KAC displays visuals in limited areas of the windshield. Imagine a future where many unmanned vehicles are running on pavements. Don’t you think it’s necessary to have a large windshield screen in such vehicles for occupants’ convenience and comfort? Such a windshield will play a role as a large touch screen from which a driver can not only have a clear view, but also watch a video and check out traffic situations. We want to make this change together with KAC.”This is an era where a scene from a SF movie makes a step into reality. Automobiles are fast changing, while accepting various new attempts without reservation. To preoccupy the future automotive market where competition is already harsh, Hyundai Motor Group and KAC are determined to share the same dream again. “We are improving our broad perspectives such as approaches to automobiles and the latest insights into automobiles together with Namyang R&D Cen-ter. KAC wil l boost synergy through detai led approaches based on its expertise.”Hong-ju Kim, deputy general manager from KAC Development Team promises to maintain win-win partnership. Automotive safety glass is now attempt-ing to make a change from a safety shield to a display interacting with a driver. KAC and Namyang R&D Center are putting their heads together to develop the world’s first and best products by combining their respective expertise.

Future automobile innovation starts from automotive safety glass

There is a Korean saying that “When your cousin buys land, your stomach hurts.” Why does your stomach hurt even though you haven’t lost anything as a result of his having bought some land? It’s because of

jealousy - the fact that your cousin has bought rubbed you the wrong way. It must be puzzling to your cousin to see you react like that. There are many other similar occasions when a certain act of yours no doubt causes inconvenience - or benefits - to others, and in econom-ics, they are called “externalities.” If the effect is posi-tive, it’s termed a “positive externality,” and if the effect is negative effect, it’s a “negative externality.” What we are talking about here is “negative externalities.”Think of a car manufacturer. The aim of each car man-ufacturer is to produce more cars to boost profits. However, running a car generates considerable amounts of fine dust in the air. Fine dust is a negative externality that the car manufacturer is not able to address directly. Fine dust can harm people’s health and decrease their productivity. Consequently, medi-cal expenses increase, and the government has to take measures to improve air quality.Let’s consider this at the level of the whole society; when a factory produces cars, it generates profits, but at the same time, it generates damages such as air pol-lution. No matter how much profit the car manufac-turer makes, if damages increase like a snowball, it’s a net loss for society. If damages exceed revenues, the car manufacturer may have to stop its production of cars. However, if the society continues to shoulder these damages, the manufacturer can produce cars without having to bear any of the costs and will eventually increase its production. “Overproduction” refers to the phenomenon where a company keeps increasing its production in such a way.The easiest way to reduce negative externalities is to make sure that economic actors don’t act in such a way. However, because that has the risk of impeding the economy, most opt to put some responsibility on the shoulders of manufacturers: for instance, by imposing environmental charges on manufacturers to prevent overproduction. The taxes imposed on the manufacturers are called “corrective taxes” in that their purpose is to correct negative externalities, and they are also called “Pigouvian taxes” after the name of the economist who proposed them, Pigou. The fuel

taxes levied on gasoline and diesel oil can also be cate-gorized as Pigouvian taxes.Nolbu got into a foul mood because Heungbu got rich. If the village’s governor tells Heungbu to pay 50% of what he has earned as an income tax because it’s unearned income, Nolbu may have felt a bit better. The higher the income tax rate, the better Nolbu may have felt. However, taxation can resolve only a small frac-tion of these problems. Most negative externalities concern dealings between individuals. The economist Ronald Coase proposed the Coase theorem which argues that problems relating to externalities can be resolved through autonomous negotiation between individuals. Suppose that person A generates a profit of 3,000 won by raising a dog, while the act causes 1,000 won in damage to person B, a neighbor of person A. In this case, person A just needs to give 2,000 won to person B after negotiation. They can reach an agreement because Person A will continue to make a profit of 1,000 won by raising the dog, while person B also gets a profit of 1,000 won in spite of the noise generated by the dog. However, the important thing is that there should not be any additional cost (i.e. transaction cost) incurred because of the negotiation, or that the addi-tional costs incurred should be smaller than person A’s own profit. If person A gets to spend an additional 1,000 won on attorney’s fees, person A will make zero profit, hence no reason to raise the dog.

To acquire the ability to read the economy, you must first get familiar with the economy. KCC’s house organ <KCC> offers you common economic knowledge each month. It covers various areas, including film, literature, and popular culture, so that you can learn about the economy with fun and ease.

What Made Nolbu Jealous?

Negative Externalities Found in the Fairy Tale “Heungbu and Nolbu”

Out of humor over the news that his younger brother, Heungbu, had made a fortune, Nolbu wagged his finger at Heungbu when next he saw him, bristling indignantly, “How dare you show your face here!" Heungbu, though he had no intended to do so, wound up making Nolbu upset. The story of Heungbu and Nolbu is a great example of “negative externalities.”

Reading Economics through Culture The Joy of Learning

By Byung-ryul Park (Economics reporter for The Kyunghyang Shinmun)

Korean folktale <Heungbu and Nolbu> <Heunbu and Noblu> is a story of two brothers, good-hearted Heungbu and greedy Nolbu. This Korean traditional folktale deals with the fraternal love between the two brothers and has a cen-tral theme of “good triumphing over evil.” It satirizes the rapidly changing aristocratic society in the late Joseon Dynasty period through Heungbu’s incapacity.

Correcting KonglishThe Joy of Learning

By Soo-kyung Lee (AllThatEnglish.com)

“Let’s Learn Local English!”

Cars are an essential part of modern life. This column will look at some of the pitfalls that Koreans can fall into when talking about cars in English.

In the car

1) side brake (X) → emergency brake/ parking brake (O)Because this brake is on the side, they are commonly referred to in Konglish as a side brake. In the English-speaking world, however, it is more commonly called a “handbrake”, an “emergency brake” or a “parking brake”.» You must use the emergency brake in that case.

2) accel (X) → gas pedal / accelerator (O)“Accel” is short for “accelerator”, but native speakers of Eng-lish prefer to call it the “gas pedal”. Stepping on the accelera-tor is colloquially expressed as “hitting the gas”.» My car makes a weird sound when I step on the gas pedal.» Hit the gas, will you? We’re late.

3) back mirror (X) → rear-view mirror (O)It is easy to understand why this term is used. It’s a mirror that drivers use to look at what’s behind them. However, the proper term for it is a “rear-view mirror”.» Who adjusted the rear-view mirror? I can’t see properly.

The following Konglish expressions are com-monly used by Koreans when driving, but a native speaker of English will have a tough time trying to understand what you mean.

While driving

1) window brush (X) → windshield wiper (O)The front window of a car is called a “windshield” or “wind-screen”, not a window. Because this part wipes the windshield clean, it is called a “windshield wiper” or “windscreen wiper”.» Turn on the windshield wipers.

2) bonnet (O) / hood (O)While British English refers to the hinged cover over the engine of an automobile as a “bonnet”, “hood” is the word that’s used in American English.» Pop the hood open. I need to check the engine.

3) open car (X) → convertible (O)A convertible is a type of car whose roof can be opened, which explains why many Koreans call it an open car. But, the prop-er terminology is a “convertible”.» I want to buy a convertible.

These are several Konglish expressions that refer to car parts which are not used by native speakers of English.

Car parts

1) car center (X) → auto body shop / auto repair shop (O)The place you go to have your car fixed is called an auto body shop or an auto repair shop in proper English. On a related note, a person who fixes cars is called an “auto mechanic”.» I need to take my car to an auto body shop.

2) sunting (X) → tinting (O)When you add shading to your car windows for protection from the sun’s rays, it is not called “sunting”. It’s referred to as “tinting”. When you get tinting done on your windows, you say that your windows are “tinted”.» Where can I get my car window tinted?

These are some expressions that we use related to auto repair and maintenance that will confuse native speakers of English.

Auto repair

3) punc (X) → flat tire (O)Koreans like to use the word “punc” to refer to a flat tire. Puncture refers to a hole, so that’s where the word “punc” originated. However, a tire that has a hole becomes flat, so English speakers call it a flat tire.» I’ve got a flat tire, and I don’t have a spare in my trunk! What do I do?

The telephone is the fastest means to have two-way communication with your foreign business partners. However, troublesome situations can arise during phone conversations because you’re not speaking with them face-to-face. Here are some tips and useful phrases you need to know to talk politely on the phone with your business partners.

The Perfect Guide to Business Phone Calls

Global Business EtiquetteThe Joy of Learning

When talking to a foreign business partner, confidence is essential. Keep in mind that your English is much better than their Korean and that what you are saying in English is sufficiently understood by them. So, even if you can’t com-pletely understand what they are saying, don’t feel ashamed of yourself, but simply ask them about it. Especially, native English speakers tend to speak quickly, so when such an occasion arises, say “I’m sorry, could you speak more slowly?” To help them understand the situation more clearly, you can add “I’m having trouble understanding you”. “Sorry, could you repeat that?” and “I did not quite catch that” are also useful expressions you can use in such a situation.

When You Didn’t Understand What the Other Person Said, Don’t Feel Ashamed to Ask Them

When meeting someone for the first time, a good first impression is para-mount. Likewise, during phone conversations, your first few words determine your image. Rather than saying the casual “Hello,” reveal your affiliation, name, and position, in that order. “KCC Corporation, Kim’s speaking. May I help you?” will suffice. With these few words, you come across to the other person as professional and can also spare them the trouble of having to ask you who you are once more. After having identified the other person, give them a simple greeting such as “How are you?”. Say “How can I help you?” when you ask them the purpose of their call. If they are looking for someone other than you, say “He/she is not in” before adding “May I take a message?”

Reveal your affiliation, name, and position, in that order

In everyday English speech, we use the phrase “Who are you?” to ask other peo-ple to identify themselves. However, during phone conversations, let’s use “this” instead of “you” in order to come across to the other personas more polite. “Who’s calling, please” is also a good phrase you can use. The same goes for when you refer to yourself on the phone. Greet the other person by saying “Hello? This is OO, calling from KCC Corporation” and then disclose the pur-pose of your call. People make a lot of preposition-related mistakes during phone calls. If you often talk to foreign business partners on the phone, make a note of the following and keep it on a post-it on your desk. Use “at” before times, “on” before days of the week, and “in” before months, seasons, and cities.

Use “This” instead of “You” and “I”

“Hello? this is Min-Su!”

“Oh! Min-Su how are you”

“Sorry, could you repeat that?” I was loud and I

did not hear it.”

If you want to reduce mistakes during phone conversations, it’s a good idea to repeat what the other person says when you speak. For example, if you have an appointment with the other person at 5 o’clock on the 14th, double-check the details by saying “OK, the 14th at five o’clock.” If you have difficulty under-standing the other person’s pronunciation properly, it’s better you write down the spelling of a problem words or phrases. In such cases, ask “How do you spell that, please?” Then, you will be able to clearly understand what the other person is asking for. Alternatively, you can say “Hang on, let me just get a pen and write that down” and write it down. Then, they will have understood the situation and speak to you with clearer pronunciation than before.

Repeat What the Other Person Says

“We’ll see you at the square at 4 o’clock.”

“Ok! square at 4 o’clock.”

KCC Happiness SharingThe Joy of Sharing

“Reduce Energy Use and Add Love!”

KCC’s social contribution campaigns

Is there anything better than sharing for making this cold-hearted world warmer? KCC, a company that has been leading the way towards creating a world where people live harmoniously with their neighbors, has taken a new step forward in its sharing efforts; the company has unveiled its “Reduce Energy Use, Add Love” social contribution campaign, which is run in conjunction with the Korea Energy Agency.

KCC has been carry-ing out systematic and diverse social contribution activi-ties for local com-

munities. The newly launched “Reduce Energy Use, Add Love” campaign is a social contribution campaign run in partnership with the Korea Energy Agency, and its keywords are “energy saving” and “eco-friendly.” The campaign aims to raise awareness of renewable energy and lead efficient energy use through the green remodeling of local institutions and centers. The “Reduce Energy Use, Add Love” campaign is particularly sig-nificant as every small act by its employees will directly lead to social contribution. KCC plans to conduct training sessions and con-tests on energy saving plans at all of its locations so that its employ-

ees can take the initiative to save energy. And for disadvantaged and group who may need support e.g. Children’s Welfare Center and young entrepreneurs, KCC will provide its eco-friendly and energy saving products. The General Affairs Team’s Ah-jeoung Nam emphasized that this campaign is a business-linked social contribution campaign, saying, “Unlike traditional social contribu-tion campaigns, this new social con-tribution campaign will see KCC carrying out activities that only KCC can do based on our expertise and technology. We at KCC will fulfill our social responsibilities by carry-ing out activities that are in accor-dance with the values we pursue, including eco-friendly and energy-saving activities.”Meanwhile, the “Reduce Energy Use, Add Love” campaign which is

expected to bring about positive effects on the spread of a sharing culture, will also help revitalize in-house social contribution clubs. Members of KCC’s in-house social contribution club, “KCC Happiness Sharing,” reaffirmed their determi-nation to actively participate in activities that will be carried out in the future. As part of the “Reduce Energy Use, Add Love” campaign, an event that celebrates the launch of the first “Energy-Independent Study Room” took place on March 30. Energy-Independent Study Rooms refer to spaces that have been remodeled from the residents’ shared spaces with energy-saving facilities and construction materi-als and are thereby capable of not only saving energy use, but also producing energy. The first space to undergo such remodeling was

Banditbul Center located in Bang-bae-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul . Located in an area predominantly inhabited by multi-family house-holds, Banditbul Center is a com-munity space for the area’s resi-dents and runs after-school study rooms and shelters.The event was graced by the atten-dance of Young-Ho Kim, Vice President and head of KCC’s Sales & Marketing Division as well as the Korea Energy Agency’s Presi-d e n t N a m - h o o n K a n g . T h e y assembled solar-powered LED table lighting fixtures together with the 20 children at the center,

instilling the children with an awareness of energy saving and renewable energy. Meanwhile, an enthusiastic activity was witnessed on the rooftops; members of “KCC Happiness Shar-ing” and employees from KCC’s partner companies joined forces and installed and painted photo-voltaic power generation facilities. The photovoltaic power generation facilities donated by KCC will reduce the center’s economic bur-den by internal ly generating power.Sporthane Topcoat(Energy), KCC’s eco-friendly paint product that was

used to paint the center’s rooftop floor and walls, also caught attention. KCC Sporthane Topcoat(Energy) is a heat-shielding, water-resistant paint that helps reduce energy con-sumption by reducing temperature changes inside buildings. As the heartfelt touch of the partic-ipants’ hands was given to every corner of the roof, beautiful murals of various colors were made. With their first Energy-Independent Study Room as a starting point, KCC and the Korea Energy Agency plan to select and support a total of 50 study rooms in Korea by the end of the year.

KCC Happiness Sharing Team installed a photovoltaic power generation facility as a part of social contribution program “Reduce Energy Use, Add Love”.

IntroducingKCC In-house ModelsLast April, KCC’s nine in-house models including men, women and children gathered in one place and had their first group photo shoot. KCC's in-house models, comprised of not only KCC staff but also family members are from various age groups. They are set to fea-ture in various promotional materials for the company. Let’s meet the nine selectees who will serve as KCC’s in-house models, with employees representing the eco-friendly corpo-ration KCC and family members of other employees.

In contrast with the quiet-ness outside its building, the studio located in Sin-sa-dong was brimming with lively, boisterous

energy inside. “That’s the way! A natural smile! Yes, that’s it!” 2017 new recruit Gi-jin Jeong at Analy-sis Research Team, was striking a pose. “There are many KCC prod-ucts around us, although we don’t even notice them most of the time. I want to let more people learn about these products and acquaint them with such a positive image of KCC.”The PR&AD Team cited affection towards the company and non-contrivedness as the core strengths of in-house models. “KCC employ-ees and their family members know the company more and suit the company’s image better than models recruited from outside the company do. A healthy image of in-house mod-els is a great way of gaining empa-thy and winning trust. Indeed, they know the company’s products bet-ter than anyone else, and, conse-quently, are great at figuring out what elements of the product must be promoted. I expect that by using in-house models, we will be able to kill two birds with one stone: enhancing the employees’ morale as well as their loyalty to the com-pany through the encouragement of their direct participation in pub-lic relations activities. Of course, interest in publicity and advertis-ing within the company will also increase as a direct result.Byung-kyu Park, who currently works in the Construction Material Processing Sales Team, has been promoting the company in his KCC uniform since he was a member of the company’s pro basketball team. “I’m honored to have been given the opportunity to promote our compa-

ny in a different way. I will do my utmost so as not to embarrass those who have recommended me.”Eun-kyung Cho, who works in the HQ_CS Team, grabbed people’s attention with her well-defined facial features. Being a former Hanbok model as well as having modeled for KCC’s press releases, she kept her composure and did not show any sign of tiredness throughout the photo shoot.“I’d like to thank all the colleagues in my department who cheered me on today at the photo shoot.” Ju-ha Lee, daughter of Assistant Manager Jeong-do Lee who works in the Ansung Plant’s Production Department, leaped round the set holding hands with other models, and a smile spread across the faces of all employees who watched her charming act.Seo-jeong Lee, daughter of the HomeCC Sales Team’s Manager Wan-gyu Lee, caught the eye of the people on the set with her soot black hair and limpid eyes. Having been calmly sitting in a chair wait-ing for her turn, she came alive in front of the camera striking various poses like a pro model. Seo-eun Lee, daughter of Deputy General Manager Gwan-ju Lee on the Insu-lation Material Construction Plant Direct Sales Team, is a piano prod-igy boasting perfect pitch as well as having won first prize in piano competitions, attended the photo shoot with a bright yet pliant atti-tude. Seung-jin Lee and her son, Jeong-ryul Ham, looked like a devoted mother and son. They have a special connection with KCC. Seung-jin Lee said that she met her husband, the Pohang office’s General Manager Seong-su Ham while working at KCC. She said that she was glad to make another connection with KCC together with her son Jeong-ryul

after all these years.Eun-ji Kim, the wife of the General Merchandise Purchase Team’s Manager Il-hwan Hong, was noted for her tall stature and slim phy-sique. A mother of two, she decided to use this opportunity to take a shot at modeling after years as a housewife. “I’ve always wanted to try my hand at modeling. My chil-dren are always my priority, but I’ve decided to use this modeling casting call to give myself a little treat. Especially because this job helps the company my husband is working for, I’ll do my best.” Hopefully, more people will get to know more about eco-friendly company KCC and its various products which pro-vide convenience in our daily life.

The largest global flooring material expo in the Asia-Pacific region ‘DOMOTEX Asia’ was held in Shanghai, China from March 21 to March 23. 1,350 companies from over 40 countries took part in the exhibi-

tion, which celebrates its 19th anniversary this year, showcasing PVC flooring materials, carpets and wood flooring materials that reflect global trends. More than 50,000 customers and spectators from over 110 coun-tries visited the venue, while flooring material compa-nies, experts and spectators from around the world shared their latest trends in flooring materials and information on new products with one another.KCC participated in the expo for the second year run-ning, publicizing its flooring brands and products tar-geting the global market, and concentrated on securing distribution channels in the Chinese market and new customers in North and South America, Southeast Asia and Europe. Also, as a PVC flooring material specialist, KCC publi-cized the technology-intensive PVC flooring materials for exports, and flooring materials for residences, busi-nesses, buses, ships and hospitals. The exhibited products include the Wood Collection, environmentally-friendly PVC residential 2.2T~6.0T flooring materials, the commercial flooring materials BASTA, ROSTA, CONSTA 200 and MASTA PRO for

exports to China and North America, the Sense Long F for ships, the Sense Tone Multi for buses, and the flooring material for hospitals MEDIFLOOR. Custom-ers had the highest preference for the new products for exports, released in January 2017, BASTA (2.0T) and ROSTA (3.0T). In the voice of the customer, “They are premium design products with excellent colors.” CON-STA 200 (2.0T) is a pattern that visitors from China, America and Southeast Asia preferred the most and have favorably reviewed. They said, “It has excellent quality, and expressed a concrete pattern very realisti-cally.” Customers, especially from China, made a del-uge of requests for consultation. They were also highly interested in the environmentally-friendly product concept, such as the Hinoki cypress oil of the Wood Collection (2.2T~6.0T), and various environmentally-friendly test reports. As for the commercial flooring material LVT “Sense Tile” loose lay and click type, KCC received many requests and inquiries from buyers with regard to quotations and sample books. KCC integrated the characteristics of environmentally-friendly flooring material into the exhibition theme. All residential PVC flooring materials were the first in Korea to contain Hinoki cypress oil, and acquired the Korea Atopy Association (KAA) mark. KCC empha-sized that the substances causing the sick house syn-drome formaldehyde and Total Volatile Organic Com-

pounds (TVOC) emissions are below the reference val-ues. With healthy and environmentally-friendly con-struction materials also drawing public attention in China, the environmentally-friendliness of KCC’s flooring materials have attracted a great deal of inter-est.KCC analyzed the results of operating the exhibition booth last year, and prepared an open booth of about 200㎡. KCC installed an open lounge/bar-type cus-tomer counseling space with the wall display at the center, and further reinforced the openness of the exhibition booth. There was a photo zone at the entrance to the booth, and PR video media (LED mod-ules) were placed around the booth with the aim of actively publicizing its brands and products. KCC clearly marked the uses of flooring material lineups, i.e. residential, commercial, for buses and for ships, and installed sample tables here and there in the booth and put various flooring material samples on display so that visitors could understand the products better. In particular, KCC highlighted the products for exports and the environmentally-friendly concept in operating the booth, thereby enhancing the visitors’ level of satis-faction. About 4,000 people visited the KCC booth during the exhibition period. Visitors from North and South America, Europe and Southeast Asia as well as China

showed greater interest than expected and asked many questions about the products. The number of compa-nies that received counseling at the booth increased 24% over last year to 500 companies (from 26 coun-tries). KCC actively publicized its flooring material brands and products, and identified potential custom-ers. This was an opportunity to communicate with global customers and correctly understand the needs of customers in each country. KCC is planning to take advantage of this exhibition to reinforce its promotion and PR activities so that customers from around the world will have more opportunities to learn about KCC’s excellent products. In addition, KCC will capitalize on the customer infor-mation and needs analysis it has gained from talks with customers to accelerate its efforts to develop the technology and design for export products. The non-foamed sheets and homogeneous sheet product is par-ticularly popular in the Chinese market. That’s why KCC is planning to understand the needs of Chinese customers and the current situation of the market, and conduct development reviews for increasing product lineups with the ultimate goal of additional expansion of the Chinese market. Furthermore, KCC will rein-force the export competitiveness of its products by acquiring test reports and certificates issued by repu-table foreign authorities.

The structure the Tech-nical Department has naturally evolved over t i m e t o m e e t t h e changing needs of the

business. There are two main sec-tions within the Technical group including Research/Development and Applications and Process Tech-nology and Production Support. The R&D section is responsible for developing new products and sup-porting customers with any applica-tion queries they may have. The Process Technologies section is responsible for ensuring that all existing processes and formulations are optimised to ensure first time pass rates are maximised and rework and reject batches as mini-mised. As such, the Basildon Tech-nical team consists of a group of technical specialists with expertise in many different disciplines, rang-ing from fundamental science and engineering to product and applica-tion specific knowledge. Mark Gha-foor, Technical Manager at Basil-don Chemicals mentioned that this allows research problems and cus-tomer queries to be approached from very different viewpoints. “The collective knowledge of this group allows an overview of a problem to be obtained. Also, solutions are found for the majority of queries we

have encountered.” Antifoam technology has always been an important part of Basil-don’s core business. It also spans many different application areas from Pharmaceutical to Industrial. A major research program was car-ried out recently to develop an anti-foam emulsion that would be suit-able for use in detergents and agro-chemical formulated products. Suc-cessful trials of the IndaPro-M and ArraPro-S emulsions have been proven to be extremely effective when benchmarked by our custom-ers against competitors’ products. “We as a group are always looking to develop unique/innovative prod-ucts that complement our existing product range. Over the past 18 months we have developed hybrid emulsions of silicone and natural oils that offer benefits over tradi-tional solutions currently on the market. A large portion of our time involves the application testing of these new products in order to pro-duce documentation that demon-strates the advantage of our prod-ucts over current commercially available offerings.” Mr. Ghafoor continued and emphasized the importance of having ownership and strong responsibility on their position and job. During Basildon’s weekly departmental meetings all

members of the team present the work they have completed over the past week to their colleagues. “This format works very well because this produces a forum in which new ideas and potential solutions to technical issues can be collectively discussed. This is a very powerful tool which helps individuals to take ownership of their projects and drive them to completion.” But most of all, the Technical Depart-ment puts customer its first priority. “We will always try to engage with our customer so that we know exactly what their requirements are and what a “successful solution” would mean. Often we find that a customer may not know exactly what they require and it is only when we open up a dialogue that this becomes clear. I feel it is impor-tant to be willing to offer “alterna-tive solutions”.

01 Pubs are openplaces for anyone. 02 A street artist in a London street.

Britain has a long and deep relation with alcohol. Why is alco-hol one of their sourc-es of pride? To this

question, British people cannot cite any one specific reason. They offer speculations, such as cheap whisky prices, the gloomy weather that lures people to indoor pubs, and the fact that alcohol was chosen as a way to refine the country’s lime-stone-laden water, but they hardly give it a second thought. What matters to them is ultimately being able to have tasty alcoholic drinks in historic places.A pub, short for a public house, refers to a quintessentially British-style drinking place, and pubs are deeply ingrained in the fabric of British life. The history of the pub dates back to the Middle Ages. Pubs have their origins in inns which provided lodging and alco-holic drinks. It was indeed only in the eighteenth century that the pub went its own way and started oper-ating under the new name of “pub-lic house,” selling food and alcohol. Since the earliest days of the pub, their primary purpose for British people has always been socializing. Pubs located in the UK’s provincial regions still play the role of a town hall for the residents. To British people, who cite partying as their favorite pastime, pubs serve as a sort of open party venues that they can freely visit to enjoy cheerful vibes over a glass of beer. When we talk about alcohol, we cannot help but mention Britain’s thriving whisky scene. According to official records, whisky was born in Scotland in 1494. Until the 15th century, whisky was an alcoholic drink that offered farmers and poor people consolation. However, in the 21st century, whisky is loved

by people from all walks of life as a quint essential liquor. Scotland is naturally well-suited to producing whisky. This is why many of the high-quality single malt whiskies are produced in Scotland. High-land, Speyside, Islay, Campbel-town, and Lowland are world-re-nowned as Scotland's top five whisky regions.London, the UK’s capital city, is the center of the country’s politics, economy, culture and transporta-tion. The London metropolitan area, which consists of 32 London boroughs and a city dotted with medieval ruins, is still growing in size. Just like New Yorkers in the US, Londoners live in UK and their lives are very much centered on London. However, ironically, you cannot find any true Londoners in central London today. This is undoubtedly because of the city’s extortionately high cost of living. Of all the problems related to the cost of living in London, real estate problems are by far the most prominent. Despite the global decline in property values, house prices in London have soared over the past 30 years due to the influx of moneyed foreigners who desire to keep themselves close to the diverse cultural benefits that the city provides. London’s steep cost of living can even be felt by people who visit the city for only brief periods of time. On top of that, there is also the exorbitant rent, which is causing skilled workers indispensable to London to reluc-tantly leave central London. However, despite all that, people whose lives revolve around London rarely abandon the city altogether; to remain Londoners, they turn to the suburbs, from which it takes them about an hour to commute to London. People always use public

transportation in downtown Lon-don, and for lunch, they commonly have sandwiches in parks where they can bask in the sun. London’s swanky, upscale restaurants are mostly frequented by foreigners, and while the menu items sold at the cafes are very pricey, you can also see stores that sell quality items despite their shabby appear-ance lining the same street. If you want to discover the true value of the city, it’s wise for you to move around the city following the eyes of the Londoner, rather than focus-ing your attention on the one thing that’s immediately visible to you. London’s a fascinating city.In 1777, British literary Samuel Johnson said of London: “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.” Chew on this passage as many times as you want to, but it will always ring true.

One image comes to mind whenever we think of the UK. An English gentleman with exemplary manners standing resolutely under a foggy grey sky. Despite being the birthplace of creative pop culture that begot punk and the Beatles, traditions are also cherished in the UK. In this island country where things totally at odds with each other coexist, we tried to find the facets of the UK beloved by locals.

To build a road, you need to harden the ground first. Making the ground even and digging tunnels and pav-ing the road before laying rails are the roles of roadbed construction. KCC E&C is currently carrying out road-bed construction for a 10km section passing Yeo-ngdeok for Donghae Line railroad project. Having started in November 2014, the roadbed project is already in its middle stage and KCC E&C is making the road day and night with the goal of completion by November 2018. Expectations are building of laying a railroad network for the East Sea Rim. Once the railroad opens, you can travel between Pohang and Samcheok in about 1 hour and 20 minutes, instead of bus travel that takes about 3 hours and 10 minutes. This is expected to increase tourist demand in the East Sea regions and stimulate regional development demand.Donghae Line has expected to revitalize the East Sea region, which does not currently have many ways to

access compared to its reputation. The Zone 6’s road-bed project site is full of expectations and sense of duty.

The Biggest Challenge of the Tunnel work - Single Track Railroad Every moment of making a new road is a challenge. Sometimes you need to make a detour and sometimes you need to break through. The biggest challenge of the Zone 6 roadbed project was the tunnel. “Generally, railroads are a double track railroad but the Pohang~Samcheok line is a single track railroad. The problem is that, of the Zone 6 construction section of 10.127km, 7.039km is a tunnel section. Tunnel con-struction for a single track railroad has many restric-tions due to the small tunnel size.”The tunnel construction site was too narrow to allow even two trucks to pass side by side. Even a single truck

had to reverse to get in the tunnel. The significantly decreased scope of movement of heavy equipment slowed down the work. To resolve the problem of work efficiency lowered due to the narrow tunnel, workers began to gather ideas voluntarily. What they wanted was not an amazing solution. Workers, who know the site’s situations better than any other, suggested small but readily applicable ideas in a timely manner. “We changed the construction sequence to minimize movement. We made trucks pass under excavating equipment which is a lot less easy to move.”The Zone 6 roadbed project requires digging a total of four tunnels of different lengths, ranging from 385m-long Yeongdeok Tunnel to 4,125m-long Hwasu Tunnel. Working in the narrow tunnels will be obviously chal-lenging, but they look rather positive. They keep moving forward, saying that a tunnel is where you can keep working regardless of the weather conditions.

PC Panel Method to Retain Friable Stones “Touch this stone.”At the tunnel work site, general manager Baek-seok Seong handed over a purple stone. When held in the hand, the stone was easily broken to pieces. The rocks from which these friable stones came were also so weak that they were broken only by fingers. These weak rocks belong to a shale layer, which appeared during the work in Yeongdoek. Having originally been under the sea, Yeongdeok, Yangsan, Gyeongju, Miry-ang and Changwon regions contain extensive shale layers that were built through the deposition and hard-ening of soil and mud. “Distinctively grained shale layers tend to be easily broken when exposed to the sunlight or rain. As highly friable bedrocks have a high risk of collapse, the work to prevent such collapse became a crucial task.”The most common method to protect slopes is to con-struct “cast-in-place” concrete retaining walls. But, the

KCC E&C is not paving a road, but a dream. The dream is to have a railroad trip from Busan to Samcheok and open up a new railroad logistics route that runs from south to north along the backbone of the Korean Peninsula. At the roadbed construction site for Zone 6 of Donghae (East Sea) Line Pohang~Samcheok railroad project, KCC E&C is dreaming of Donghae Line, which will open in 2020.

The PC panel method is used to secure the stability of slopes. First, rock bolts are inserted perpendicularly to the slope to reinforce the ground. PC panels are then covered on the exposed slopes and cement is injected into the gap between the surface of the slope and the panels to prevent weathering by rainwater. The PC panel method provides superior stability as rock bolts and PC panels are directly connected. This requires no additional finishing as the natural color and stone pattern of panels provides an excellent view.

View Point

PC panels are covered on the exposed slopes and cement is injected into the gap between the surface of the slope and the panels to prevent weathering by rainwater.

Zone 6 roadbed project chose the PC panel method that covers slopes with factory-made PC panels. Compared to the concrete retaining wall method, the PC panel method requires shorter work time and requires no additional excavation, making it a higher level of meth-od in terms of economy, efficiency and stability. Even highly friable shale layers are transformed into strong retaining walls after completion of the PC panel meth-od. Transforming each rough road into a safe and even one is something that excites you during roadbed work.

A New Dream of Running on Donghae Line Currently, in its middle stage with 54% completed, the Zone 6 roadbed work for the Pohang~Samcheok rail-

road project still looks dynamic in its site. In fact, this project had a very tight schedule. Overcoming restraints of time, space and environment one by one, the site is continuously making progress as scheduled. According to general manager Seong, the secret to this successful process is communication with workers. “We are a family aboard a ship. We do a rally to strengthen our unity by playing bowling and foot volley-ball once a month and also run a reward program for our 40-odd foreign workers. Every morning, we make sure never to miss checking any possible threat and per-sonal difficulty faced by our workers. One keyword that encompasses the Zone 6 roadbed project is “family”. If they take care of each other like their family, they will voluntarily take care of any safety and deficiency issue on site as well. Their strong fellow-ship is the biggest asset for a safe workplace. “At stone celebrating completion, we will engrave all the names of our workers on the stone. Once the work is all done, I will take a railroad trip with my family on Dong-hae Line to Samcheok. When we pass the 10km-long Yeongdeok section, I will proudly tell my children that this is the road your father made.” Even at this moment, KCC E&C members including general manager Baek-seok Seong are working hard in the site, building their dream on the road. They are cre-ating new experiences and values that have never been in the world by making a new way. In narrow tunnels, under the scorching sun, and in a cloud of red dust, they are making a road that leads to a brighter tomorrow.

Recharging Daily lifeThe Joy of Sharing

Having grown up in the countryside, Nam enjoyed camp-ing even before it had become popu-

lar in Korea. It all began from the time when he had a night in a town valley with his friends, enjoying BBQ and swimming in the water. Now he goes on camping trips with his family at various campgrounds around Korea, and from last sum-mer, his choice is primarily KCC Family Campground. “I have visited almost all the popu-lar campgrounds across the nation, but none is better than KCC Family Campground. This site is free for every KCC member and boasts a large area and a good shower facil-ity. The Namhan River runs in front of the site, and behind there’s a good open field where children can play safely.”The family drove all the way to KCC Family Campground as soon as it opened. Having waited for the camping season through the win-ter, Nam and his wife Seon-ju Hwang and his son Seung-hun looked thrilled. The three pitched their tent and tarp easily and cooked up a delicious lunch shortly after. Having a simple meal con-sisting of a couple of side dishes and doenjang (soy bean paste) stew, they enjoyed their meal in the clean air and warm winds sur-rounded by birdcalls. After a short nap following the lunch, the family went for a walk as they always did in camping. “It’s so happy to make and have a tasty meal, take a good rest and spend time in nature whenever we camp. Anyone who has experi-enced camping will agree.”The air is exceptionally clean, prob-

ably due to the rain yesterday. The family rented a 2-person bicycle to ride along the Namhan River. “Dad, faster!” At the “special” request of his son, Nam pushed the pedal harder. “Honey, take a ride.” It’s time for Hwang who have watched her husband and son riding to push the pedal along with her husband. The couple who has been long time since their last riding together can-not stop smiling as if they returned to their years of dating. “The weather is so nice. Let’s go somewhere we have never tried before.” After returning the bicycle, they visited Yeongwol Park, 5-min-ute drive away from the camping site. Being a respite for Yeoju citi-zens and a location of famous cul-tural assets, including Yeoju Chan-gri Three-story Stone Pagoda and Yeoju Hari Three-story Stone Pagoda, Yeongwol Park is most famous for its Yeongwol-ru Pavil-ion, which was built in Joseon Dynasty (Gyeonggi-do Cultural Heritage Materials No. 37). “It’s so spectacular!” What welcomed them was a panoramic view of the Namhan River and downtown Yeoju. “We must visit this place whenever we camp here. This is definitely the best!” Mesmerized by the view, they returned to the campground and made their final camping moment with BBQ. “Every moment when we enjoyed green nature there instead of our smartphone and laughed and chat-ted with family was filled with hap-piness. That’s why I always want to enjoy family camping. I hope all our KCC members enjoy romantic moments at KCC Family Camp-ground.”

The family of Deok-seon Nam from Overseas Industry Team are making spe-cial memories in nature. From mornings starting with birdcalls to afternoon strolls filled with laughter and romantic starry nights… The family of Nam who enjoy the little things when camping, had this year's first camping at KCC Family Campground located in Yeonyang-dong, Yeoju-si, Gyeonggi-do.

Multi-purpose Heat-resistant Paint “Sporthane Topcoat (Energy)”

KCC has released a new product “Sporthane Topcoat (Energy)”, a high-performance paint that resists heat by reflecting sunlight. KCC Sporthane Topcoat (Energy) is a heat-resistant paint that prevents a rise in internal temperature by being applicable to the building roof or outside. This product has the feature of reducing cooling and heating expenses by blocking heat transfer into the inside of the building, as it reflects most of the infrared sunlight (the main cause of heat generation and temperature rise) and reduces thermal heat build-up. (KCC has significantly improved the heat-resistant per-formance of the paint through continuous research on Sporthane Topcoat (Energy) and proprietary technical skills.) Another characteristic and strength of this product is that it can be applied to various places regardless of the material. For example, it can be applied to concrete, steel, wood, and aluminum. For this reason, it’s expected that this product can give vital help to installing energy-saving facilities. The product can be used in various areas spanning from households to commercial facilities, such as the roof of general buildings including office building, apartment house, shopping district, nursery facilities, aged care centers, and schools as well as various storage tanks, outdoor facilities, and factory roof. In addi-tion, its excellent workability enables the user to paint with brushes, sprayers, and roll-ers. Smooth surface area after painting ensures excellent appearance. Release of Sporthane Topcoat (Energy) on this occasion is meaningful in that a high-performance product is developed that keeps pace with social issues regarding building energy saving, based on the best paint technology in Korea. KCC is set to lead the con-struction paint market with high-performance products that reflect consumers’ needs, together with paints having strong anti-fouling properties without any heavy metals and concern for mold, such as Sensemel Gold and Durasense released last January.
