Picnic brings out GOP governor hopefulsBy BRENDA [email protected]
AURORA – About 700 peo-ple packed Chris Lauzen’s19th Annual Porky Picnicfundraiser Saturday at theVaughn Athletic Center, chowing down on barbecuechicken and – of course –pork chops.
Former state senatorLauzen, now in his firstterm as Kane County Boardchairman, shook hands, heldbabies and passed out hiscontact information to con-stituents as supporters andfriends talked, politiciansglad-handed and childrenplayed games.
The event was highlight-ed as a public way for theWarriors’ Watch Riders towelcome home his two sons,Marine helicopter pilot Capt.Ted Lauzen, 29, and Navy Lt.j.g. Hans Lauzen.
But it also allowed a lo-cal platform for Republicangubernatorial candidatesbusinessman Bruce Rauner,Illinois Treasurer Dan Ruth-erford and State Sen. KirkDillard, R-Hinsdale, to statetheir qualifications and askfor support in the March 18primary.
State Sen. Bill Brady,R-Bloomington, did not at-tend.
“I’ve never run for officebefore,” Rauner said. “Myyoungest daughter said, ‘Dad-dy, don’t run for governor. Idon’t want you to go to jail.’That’s a sad commentary onthe corruption in our state, but that’s one of the reasons Iwant to run.”
Rauner said his platformis more jobs, less taxes, moresupport for schools andschool choice, term limits ofeight years, running the statelike a business and breakingthe hold government unionshave on the state.
Rutherford said he won asa Republican for statewideoffice in a four-way race in2010. His Democratic oppo-nent was Robin Kelly – an Af-rican American woman fromChicago with an Irish lastname – as well as candidatesfrom the Green Party andLibertarian Party.
Rutherford said he is theonly Republican running
for governor who has won astatewide race with 50 per-cent of the vote, and with 22percent of the Chicago vote,“because we worked hard …[and] we went into communi-ties of diversity.”
“Every single constitu-tional officer in the State ofIllinois was a Democrat fromChicago,” Rutherford said.“And here I am, this conser-vative, Republican, white, male from Central Illinois, going to run statewide. … I’mtelling you this, because forthe election of 2014, we, asthe Republican Party, need tochange Springfield and put aRepublican in the governor’smansion.”
R u t h e r f o r d s a i d h ereached out to diverse pop-ulations in order to win thetreasurer post and that iswhat the Republican Partymust do, as well.
“We, as the RepublicanParty, have got to accept andembrace people of differentcolor and of different reli-gion,” Rutherford said. “Wedon’t need to need to changeour positions, we need to rep-resent our positions [to] …communities of diversity.”
Dillard, who is assistantSenate Republican Leader, said he is a conservative re-former in the General Assem-
bly who never voted for a taxincrease.
“I am tested, I am proven,”Dillard said. “I also once ran[the office] of the last cleancompetent governor of Illi-nois, Jim Edgar. … I careabout the future of this stategreatly. … We inherited a $1billion deficit and left a $1.5billion surplus when I wasthere, running the Edgar ad-ministration. We paid ourbills in 17 days and we hadan unemployment rate belowthe national average. … WallStreet increased our creditrating during that adminis-tration for the first time instate history.”
Dillard said he has a trackrecord of being able to make aDemocratic-led legislature dothings not in its DNA, “to livewithin its means.”
Dillard said during theEdgar administration, “Wemade Michael Madigan theminority leader and we cando it again.”
Madigan is the state’s ma-jority leader.
Lauzen said this year’sgathering was “the best ever”and especially meaningful forthe big welcome back for hissons. As to why he hosted thefundraiser, Lauzen said theproceeds will pay for politicalexpenses for when he is invit-
ed to various functions. If hedecides to seek another termas county board chairman,Lauzen said he also could usethe money for another cam-paign. But Lauzen said he isnot declaring himself for asecond term at this point.
County Board memberDeborah Allen, D-Elgin, saidshe appreciated Rutherford’scomments about expandingthe Republican base to in-clude “all kinds and colors. We are one country, one peo-ple. We must become moreinclusive, not less.”
County Board memberDrew Fraz, R-Elburn, said
Lauzen “is the only Republi-can candidate of either partyin Kane County that can pull900 people together year af-ter year.” Though organizersput the tally at 700, Frasz saidthe average is 700 to 900 eachyear.
“As for the governor can-didates, we have a growingmix of Republican candi-dates,” Frasz said. “I hope itdoesn’t get so big that theyneutralize each other.”
Frasz said among thethree candidates who spokethat night, he said he wouldlikely support Rauner.
“I personally really con-nect with Bruce Rauner,”Frasz said. “As a business-man and an employer, andsomeone who’s strugglinglike all businesses to stayafloat right now, I like hismessage. And I like the factthat he’s financially indepen-dent, so he isn’t bought by thespecial interests.”
Michael Foote of Genevasaid it was too soon to getbehind any of the governorcandidates. “Time will tell,”Foote said. “We’ll see whatshakes out.”
Lois Benson of Bataviasaid she liked all three candi-dates for governor.
“To hear the commentsand see the camaraderie, Ithink we can get some thingsgoing here that are good,”Benson said. Bob Moga of BigRock, a former county boardmember from the 1960s likedall the governor hopefuls.
“They’re all good – as longas they’re Republican,” Mogasaid.
Sean King for Shaw Media
State Sen. Kirk Dillard, R-Hinsdale, who also is a candidate for governor, greets contributors at ChrisLauzen’s 19th Annual Porky Picnic fundraiser Saturday at The Vaughan Athletic Center in Aurora.

Daly wins championship flightST. CHARLES MEN’S GOLF TOURNAMENT
Self-confidencespurs defendingchamp to repeat
By DENNIS D. [email protected]
ST. CHARLES – It wasn’t
exactly Joe Namath guaran-
teeing victory in Super Bowl
III, but Matt Daly’s comments
heading into the final week-
end of the St. Charles Men’s
Tournament at Pottawatomie
Golf Course made it clear he
fully expected to successfully
defend his title.
“I didn’t guarantee it,”
Daly insisted after defeating
Chris Thomas, 5 and 3, in the
championship match Sunday,
“but it was sure in my mind.
It was the focal point of the
week.”
After prevailing in a gru-
eling 20-hole match against
2011 champion Jon Woods in
the quarterfinals, Daly said he
was “going to win the show.”
He backed up that expression
of confidence with a dominat-
ing 7 and 5 victory over David
Lanciotti on Saturday and by
going 4-up on Thomas at the
turn.
“I had a lot of good starts
and really didn’t give anything
back,” Daly said. “Everything
was working.”
“My front nine I didn’t play
too well,” Thomas said. “The
back side, I started to turn it
around. I hit a few good shots
and that got me going again,
but it was just too big a defi-
cit to come back from at that
point.”
Daly, 28, was 5-up with five
holes to play, but Thomas put
a beautiful hooking approach
shot on the 378-yard, Par-4
No. 5 to within six feet of the
pin to win the hole and stay
alive.
Thomas ran into trouble
off the tee on No. 6, however,
going wide right of the trees
lining the right side of the fair-
way. His next two shots both
solidly connected with tree
trunks.
Meanwhile, Daly’s second
shot on the hole from the left
rough was one of the high-
lights of his round.
“That last 8-iron from a
buck-70 something … out of a
[bad] lie to five feet [from the
pin], yeah, I’ll take it,” Daly
said.
That shot basically meant
Thomas had to hole a chip shot
from about 25 yards to have
any chance of winning the
hole, which he was unable to
do. After missing a long bogey
putt attempt, Thomas conced-
ed the hole and the match.
Although he was confident
he could defend his title, Daly
still found something to be
surprised about in his week-
end play.
“I’m really in shock right
now,” he said. “I haven’t hit
the irons this well in a couple
years. The distance control to-
day was exemplary. That was
really what did it. I didn’t hit
it on line all that often, but the
distance was good.”
Daly’s next challenge will
come Aug. 26, when he tries to
qualify for the U.S. Mid-Am-
ateur Championship, which
will be played Oct. 5 to 10 in
Birmingham, Ala.
“Then, rest and relaxation,”
Daly said. “It’s been a lot of
fun playing in this. It’s been a
long three weekends, believe
me. It’s been a lot of sleepless
nights.”

COUGARS
By KEVIN [email protected]
GENEVA – Cougars right
fielder Jose Dore lingered to
lean against the dugout rail
after Saturday’s series open-
er against Cedar Rapids.
He wasn’t pondering the
game – the Cougars absorbed
enough in a 6-0 loss to the Ker-
nels – as much as catching his
first glimpse of the high-fly-
ing Jesse White Tumblers.
“It was awesome, man,”
Dore said. “I mean, big shout-
out to them. That’s pretty
amazing what they’re doing.”
Switch out a pronoun or
two, and Dore easily could
have been talking about Ker-
nels right-hander Jose Berri-
os, who limited the Cougars
to two hits in 7⅓ innings.
Dore notched the first of
those, a single to right field
with one out in the sixth, and
Dan Vogelbach had the other.
Had designated hitter Rock
Shoulders not drilled Berrios
on his throwing elbow with a
liner in the eighth, the Cou-
gars (47-68 overall, 17-30 sec-
ond half) might have saluted
Berrios further.
“He just had really great
command with his fastball,
you know. He kept us off-bal-
ance. He was going in and out,
kind of putting it where he
wanted it,” Dore said. “When
a pitcher is able to command
his fastball, you know, that
makes his other stuff even
better.”
Western Division-leading
Cedar Rapids (71-46, 31-17)
created more than enough
b r e a t h i n g
room for Berri-
os with a four-
r u n f o u r t h
i n n i n g t h a t
opened with a
throwing error
by third base-
m a n J e i m e r
Candelario.
The Kernels struck for
each of their runs against
loser Felix Pena with two
outs. Two additional errors
followed in the inning, which
also included a two-base wild
pitch that allowed Kernels
second baseman Jorge Polan-
co to score what ultimately
held up as the winning run.
“That was pretty ugly.
That was really ugly, actual-
ly,” Cougars manager Mark
Johnson said. “You had that
two-base wild pitch and then
after that the wheels fell off.
... You have those nights, but
just hope that you can salvage
something and leave it at that
one run, but we just kind of
threw it around a little bit.”
Not the Kernels. As it has
all season, crisp, fundamen-
tal play steered the club’s
success.
A season-high crowd of
11,979 attended the game,
eclipsing the previous mark
of 11,304 on July 4.
Most fans offered Berrios
a polite ovation as he left the
field.
Cedar Rapids recovered to
get the 1-5-3 putout of Shoul-
ders after the liner, but Berri-
os – who walked one against
seven strikeouts – was visi-
bly favoring the outside part
of his elbow.
“I t swel led up pretty
good,” Kernels manager Jake
Mauer said. “We’ll see how it
is tomorrow. It’ll probably be
pretty ugly, but we hope it’s
just a bruise.”
The Cougars, who still can
win or split their fourth suc-
cessive series with victories
Sunday and Monday, hope to
treat this result in a similar
manner.
Look away and move for-
ward.
“Just forget about this one
and come out tomorrow, play
our best,” Dore said. “We’re
trying to make a name for
ourselves and finish strong.”

Cubs’ official: Bryant decision loomsBy KEVIN DRULEY
S p e a k i n g o n A M - 1 2 8 0
WBIG on Saturday, Tim Wilk-
en, Cubs special assistant to
the president and general
manager, said a decision on
promoting first-round pick
Kris Bryant from Short-A
Boise is imminent.
With just less than a month
remaining in the minor
league regular season, Kane
County or Advanced-A Dayto-
na are the likely destinations
for Bryant, a third baseman
drafted second overall out of
San Diego in June.
“I think we’re going to dis-
cuss that sometime next weekand see what we think is prob-ably the best plan for him,”Wilken told listeners.
Three mem-b e r s o f t h eC u b s ’ 2 0 1 3d r a f t c l a s sh a v e j o i n e dt h e C o u g a r ss i n c e J u n e ,highlighted bysecond-round
left-hander Rob Zastryzny, who pitched three innings ofscoreless relief Friday.
Fourth-round righty Ty-ler Skulina and infielderGiuseppe Papaccio, an 18th-round selection, came to Ge-
neva earlier this summer af-
ter opening their pro careers
at Boise.
Entering Saturday, Bryant
was batting .412 with three
home runs and 10 RBIs in his
past 10 starts for Boise while
raising his average to .300 in
15 games overall.
Should Bryant land with
Daytona, he could have the
opportunity for at least a few
more at-bats.
Daytona leads the sec-
ond-half race in the Florida
State League North by 3.5
games.
The Cougars’ elimination
number in their division race
is 11.

Engaged same-sex coupleoffended by lack of support
Dear Abby: Thanks to achange in state law, my part-ner and I can finally marry. We’re now struggling withwhether to invite our par-ents and families to our wed-ding. While they have beenrespectful of us together andseemed to love my partner,it has become increasinglyobvious that they don’t wantto really talk about our lives.Specifically, our new rightto marry.
No one has said a word tous about the marriage law, even though it dominatedthe news for months beforebeing passed in May. Afterprompting, they said theysupport our having the samerights, but have a problemcalling us married.
We are going to bemarried and have decidedto invite only those who sin-cerely support us to shareour special day.
Because I’m so hurt bytheir silence on this, howdo I tactfully let them knowthey aren’t invited to thewedding without severingall ties? I’m sure we aren’tthe only couple facing thisnew issue. – Newly Equal InMinnesota
Dear Newly Equal: Inviteyour family to the wedding.Because they love you andhave accepted your partner, they may wish to attend.
Remember, the concept ofmarriage equality is a verynew one and not everyoneadapts quickly to change.
Regardless of whetherthey have a problem callingyou married, the fact is youwill be married according tothe laws of your state. Andthat’s what is important.
Dear Abby: I started datinga wonderful man two yearsago. We will be gettingmarried in a few weeks andown a house together. Hehas been a wonderful fatherto my two children. He lovesthem very much and thefeeling is mutual.
From the start, he knew Iwanted to have a child withhim, and he said he wantedthe same. Last spring I be-came pregnant by accident, but sadly, had a miscarriagea few months later. When Itold him I was pregnant, he
was not excited and madecomments that caused mestress. After the miscar-riage, he acted like nothinghad happened, which hurtme deeply because I reallywanted that baby.
Now he says he doesn’twant a baby anymore – thathe has changed his mindwithout even consideringthat I still want one. I’m solost. Please give me someadvice. – Baby Maybe? InPuerto Rico
Dear Baby Maybe?: Youand your fiance appearto have a communicationproblem. Now that youknow he has changed hismind about wanting a childwith you, you have a rightto know why. Discussingthis with the counsel of aneutral mediator would behelpful before your trip tothe altar.
Because the agreementbetween you was that youwould be enlarging yourfamily, you may need torethink whether you wantto go through with the wed-ding. If that’s the case, youmay also need the help of anattorney to separate fromhim financially because youown property together.
Dear Abby: In late Jan-uary, my sister left a $20bill at the front desk of myhairdresser’s salon and toldthe receptionist to give itto me when I came in andtell me it was my Christmaspresent. When I objectedto the impersonal mannerof the “gift,” my sister gotmad and told me I was being“ridiculous.” We haven’tspoken since. Was I wrongto object? – Mad In Maine
Dear Mad: Obviously, youand your sister aren’t close. If she didn’t even bother toenclose the money with acard or note, I don’t blameyou for being miffed, par-ticularly if you customarilyexchange gifts.

Step from trickone to trick four
BRIDGE by Phillip Alder
Henny Youngman said: “I beton a horse at 10 to one. It didn’tcome in until half-past five.”
Bridge defenders must timegetting the tricks that they needto defeat the contract before thedeclarer has won the numberthat he requires.
In this deal, the defendersrequire five tricks to beat threespades. West leads the heart ace. What should happen after that?
West doubled on the secondround to show five hearts, fourdiamonds and extra values. (Tobid three diamonds would haveguaranteed a five-card suit.)North raised spades to indicate apromising hand, but South hadnothing to spare, and those threelow hearts were a warning bell.
Under the heart ace, Eastsignals with his 10, starting ahigh-low (echo) with a doubleton. Now West can see four defensivetricks via the spade ace and threetop hearts, but where is the fifthwinner?
Next, West should considerthe high-card points. After check-ing the dummy and his hand, hesees there are only 11 points miss-ing. South must have most or allof them for his advance at thetwo-level, which I think should beforcing by an unpassed hand. IfEast and West cannot get anotherside-suit trick, they must collect asecond trump trick.
West should cash the heartking to confirm East’s doubleton, then shift to his singleton club.
South will win in his handand play a trump, but West takesthe trick and continues with hisheart two, the lowest card being asuit-preference signal. East ruffsand returns a club, which Westruffs for down one.
