and the 140th Infantry

The 140th Infantry was formed by joiningthe old Missouri 3rd and 6th Infantry

Regiments. The 3rd had been a Kansas City

based regiment since 1886. The 140thserved with distinction during the war.

After the war a unit history titled

From Doniphan to Verdunwas published from which these

images were taken.

embark on their journeyaround the Pacific Ocean.

Missouri State Guard

During WWII, the Missouri State Guard took over the role of the Missouri NationalGuard during its deployment. The Missouri Sate Guard was made up of men who

were too young or old to join the military. Others were classified as 4F, or physicallyineligible for service. In many cases this was not too great a disadvantage for themto serve in the State Guard. For example, CPT Merle Chiles had asthma and served.CPT Chiles was also crucial to the war effort as a civilian as well with his work in the

manufacture of bomb sights

242nd Engineer Battalion

The 242nd was the first African American Missouri National Guard unitsince 1887. The last known African American Kansas City unit was the

Jordan Rifles commanded by CPT Louis Tompkins

Notable persons who have served in theMilitia or National Guard from Kansas City:

Unfortunately, no known image of David Waldoexists. He is worth mentioning here for his service in

the Missouri Militia. Waldo offered his services tothe state in1846 and was elected Captain of Company

A, Missouri Mounted Volunteers. His company

served with COL Alexander Doniphan during the war.After the war, Waldo entered various business

ventures and became wealthy. Part of the businessdistrict in Kansas City today bears his name.

Fur Traders Descending the Missouri

Ernest Hemingway joined the Missouri Home Guard on 25March, 1918 after he failed the vision exam to enter the Army.The Home Guard was created to serve as a defense force in

Missouri while the National Guard was deployed for World War

I. He volunteered in August with the Red Cross AmbulanceCorps and served on the Italian front. On 8 July, 1918,

Hemingway was severely wounded delivering supplies toSoldiers. He was wounded by an Austrian mortar shell that leftfragments in his legs and was also hit with machine-gun fire.

Hemingway was later awarded a medal by the Italiangovernment for rescuing an American Soldier who had also

been wounded the same time he was. Despite his owninjuries, Hemingway was able to drag himself and the Soldierto safety. Hemingway went on to write many novels and otherworks of literature like A Farewell To Arms, For Whom The

Bell Tolls, and The Old Man And The Sea.
