KBWS 15th ANNUAL SPRING SHOW MAY 2011
This year members of the KBWS once again came together to create another wonderful collaborative. Many thanks go out to the artists, our wonderful model, Picture Alaska which framed the piece and, especially to Michael Murray without whose patience and dilligent skills, this and many recent collaborations would have faltered.
And a BIG THANK YOU to DONNA MARTIN and NINA BURKHOLDER for taking care of us during these winter months. To PAULA DICKEY and MIKE MURRAY for creating stimulating and fun programs every month. WE LOVE YOU GUYS!!! HAVE A GREAT SUMMER at Fish Camp, NINA!!!
THANK YOU to the FIREWEED GALLERY for another great year of continued support for the Kachemak Bay Watercolor Society and the arts in Homer.

Big Baldy and the Ravens by Michael Murray, KBWS Spring Show The theme of this year’s shorebird festival is “Wild Birds In Wild Places” and I dare say it tickled me ol’ funnybone when I heard it. While not considered shorebirds - just about any day of the year you can find eagles and ravens either on the shore or diving out at the local landfill. This imaginary poster has alternating eagle and raven feathers around the border. The guitar is a BC Rich model that, while very uncomforable to play (could poke an eye out for sure), looked like a feather design to me so I put it in the faithful hands (oops wings) of Rav. I am thinking of doing a CD cover to go with it- tunes like - “Ode to the Eagle Lady” “I’ll Fly Away.. unless you keep feedin’ me” “Who’s that Sittin’ on My Eggs?” “The Nest’s Still Warm but My Baby’s Flown Away” “Moma I Just Ain’t Ready Ta Fly”...and more...so many more.
VOLUNTEER NEEDEDHELP WANTED: A SECRETARY IS STILL NEEDED to attend Board Meetings and Take Notes at about 6 meetings per year.
‘Don’t Cage Me In’ by Georg-Anne Phillips, KBWS Spring Show I painted this as a preliminary to the Judi Betts Workshop. I did an underpainting of shapes before doing the subject. This added dimension and texture. It was a fun way to work! - Georg-Anne Phillips
the HOMER ART & FRAME Co. will be holding Art Workshops throughout the summer. Stop by, say hi to Lynda and check out the schedule and great selection of art and frame supplies.
KBWS workshops SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMEvery year KBWS members donate their time and artistic skills to produce those delightful little paintings that Rowan lovingly pastes onto 5x7 cards. Little paintings and collages are sold through the Fireweed Gallery to provide scholarships for students of our yearly watercolor workshop.
KEEP THOSE WONDERFUL MINATURES COMING!!!! Summer is a boom time for scholarship card sales. So, let’s find those old NOT QUITE READY FOR PRIME TIME paintings....perhaps something you hid in a big box under the bed ten years ago.......oops.........maybe that’s just me. Just REMEMBER...............EVERY PAINTING IS FULL OF LITTLE GEMS THAT SHINE So open the ol’ treasure chest (Aarrrrrrrr) and grab that “gem” and bring it to Rowan at the Fireweed Gallery. We keep our committment to the arts strong through education and artistic growth.
This year a Homer High School student, Haley Kinnard, has been selected through the Homer High School Arts Department to recieve the 2011 workshop scholarship. CONGRATULATIONS HALEY!
dance of Kachemak Bay. I hunker down, spotting scope set, sketch book and camera in hand, eternally hopeful of capturing one of those endearing moments which ultimately brings a bird to life on the canvas.

Who would have thought those skittering skinny-legged shorebirds would become my passion? But when early May comes around bringing tens of thousands of migrating shorebirds to the coastal mudflats of Alaska, I become engrossed by the intertidal
Migrating north at 35+ mph, a ‘fling’ of Whimbrels can chase the fast ferry across Prince William Sound. Migrating south they can fly non-stop from the Yukon Delta to Baja, eventually spending winter anywhere between California and Tierra del Fuego. Not a bad gig.
For the KBWS Spring show I painted three Whimbrels....definitely birds of distinction, with long, slender, down curved bills and purposeful legs supporting a stout, ptarmigan-sized frame, each step is a practice in grace. But flight, as for all migrants, is their forte. How do they man-age to keep that little football floating in the air? And for such long distances?
This May I went out for 2 glorious weeks, every day, walking “the Homer Spit”, enthralled by the changing scene, delighted by the the coordinated movements of these exceptional
migrants, and sharing with friends’ many ooooooo’s and ahhhh’s as each mass of shorebirds would ebb and flow in unison.

Although in summer we feel cast to the winds and the vagarties of salmon and halibut, Claudia’s Bookshelf is always available at the HCOA during business hours.

OUT with the OLD and IN with the NEW
The stations or centers were as follows: Inverted Thinkers - drawing and painting from an image that is kept upside down from it’s “nor-mal” position. This technique which is featured in “Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain” and gets one looking at shapes rather than basing the work on preconceived ideas.Flatlanders - flatten out a piece by breaking a composition into shapes separated by either black or white lines, NO shading within any space. Think of a stained glass project or tile piece. Color to Monochromatic or Monochromatic to Color - Using a black and white image, create an image in color or using a color image create an image in a monochromatic scheme of values.Opposites attract - Reversing values in going from the photo or life study or using comple-mentary colors - i.e. red where there was green, orange where there was blue, etc.
Paula Dickey, Co-program planner and member artist, presented the group with a challenge, “the enemy of art is the lack of limitations”. Four “station” ideas were set up to push the envelope a bit and get participants thinking in new and maybe even a little uncomfortable ways. After explaining each station she gave participants an op-portunity to draw slips of paper with a station on it, which they could either trade with another person (mutually agreeable) or pursue as drawn.

Ample munchies, hot tea and great jazz in the background made the hours fly by. The process was active, exciting and invigorat-ing! Thank you Paula!!
With 10 participants we broke into groups of 3 or 4 to a table and worked with the first 3 center ideas. People were encouraged to expand into styles (cub-ism for example) or abstract or non-representative color. Photos from magazines were provided at each table to work from initially. Examples of how other artists approached similar objectives were provided (not to copy but to give some idea of possibilities and provide some additional stimulus).
