What is an Equal Potential clamp?
An Equal Potential Clamp is a device than equalises two different potentials .

What causes unequal potentials ?
Unexpected rises between different power systems as a result of LIGHTNING, WIND, ACCIDENT or SYSTEM MALFUNCTION.

WHAT STOPS IT ?
A passive component that forms a hard bond between the potentials to reduce the difference to a
safe level..

What Happens ? When a voltage is applied across the terminals in excess of 70 volts the gas fires . When this happens it effectively creates a short circuit across the terminals to create a “HARD BOND” [resistance <0.025 ohms].
This bond will continue until the voltage reduces below 70 volts. ENGINEERED WITH QUALITY

Should the voltage surge extend beyond 400 ms the arrestor will become hot. This heat increase triggers a solenoid that immediately activates a solid bar to place a direct short across the terminals. This direct short continues until the temperature of the arrestor falls 15 degrees below the activation level. If the voltage is still in excess of the trigger voltage the sequence continues until the problem is resolved or an external source removes the potential.

HOW DO I TEST THE SOLENOID AND BATTERY ?
GUARD INSULATOR ……. NORMAL
GUARD INSULATOR …. NORMAL OPERATED / CONTACTS CLOSED
GUARD INSULATOR IN TEST POSITION.. INSULATOR COVERS CONTACTS WHEN TEST SWITCH PUSHED ………….RETURN GUARD TO NORMAL AFTER TEST

Where should I use an Equal potential clamp ?
•Wherever a need exists to clamp 2 separate electrical earthing systems together during fault conditions ONLY.
•Where-ever protection is necessary on ELV equipment against very high sustained surges and overvoltage conditions.

Bonding Two Separate Electrical Systems
Operational conditions need these 2 systems be separated.
However for safety reasons these separate systems should be bonded together.Possible dangerous touch potentials exist.Damage to equipment that could cause a disaster.

Protection of ELV Equipment
Areas may have high voltages present that can damage ELV equipment.
•Conductors attached to these circuits may be exposed to surge voltages and currents during fault conditions.
•In areas of high vulnerability, it may be advisable to ensure the fault current has a predetermined path.

Indirect damage from wire drop will mostly be to track circuit equipment as a minimum.
Such as:-Track relays
Surge arrestorsTrack circuit wiringTrack circuit fuses
plus unknown signaling equipment
