Our Vision is “creating and sustaining a culture that
Educates, Engages and Empowers ALL to be successful.”
Volume 31 Issue 8 April 2019
AAAA Message fromMessage fromMessage fromMessage from Marlene LearyMarlene LearyMarlene LearyMarlene Leary, Principal, Principal, Principal, Principal Dear Kauai High School ‘Ohana,
I would like to thank everyone for the support given to our Kaua’i High School students! It is amazing to see many Red Raider fans and supporters at the various sporting events, extra-curricular activities and community meetings. High school is a special and perfect time for our students in which we are able to guide, assist, and model great citizenship and academic excellence. Let us continue to work together in these endeavors.
As we move forward into the last quarter of the year, I encourage our students and families to continue to communicate with our teachers, counselors and administration regarding academics, supports and assistance. Collaboration and communication are essential to ensuring our students receive the necessary help in school. Please utilize Infinite Campus to track grades and attendance. A special reminder to our seniors and their families to review the Senior Agreement as this quarter’s expectations requires more diligence in terms of attendance and behavior expectations.
We are currently recruiting for representatives in our School Community Council (SCC) and member of our Partners in Support of Raider Students-Parent Teacher Student Association (PAIRS/PTSA) for school year 2019-2020. The purpose of the SCC involves being a part of the leadership structure at a school and enable shared-decision making among principals, teachers, school staff, parents, students and community members to improve student achievement. Kaua’i High School’s SCC meets approximately 4-5 times a year. I highly recommend your participation as we move forward in exploring pathways and Academies as part of our school design. Next year, we will be developing an action plan that encompasses student voice, teacher collaboration and school design and align it to our Academic Plan. In addition, I highly encourage your membership in our PAIRS/PTSA. Meetings are held monthly. Membership is open to all people who care about our children and our schools. Members volunteer to provide programs and services that enhance our students’ learning and growth.
Kaua’i High School’s vision states “Creating and sustaining a culture of learning that educates, engages, and empowers all to be successful.” It is imperative we ALL work together to realize this vision. Building and sustaining positive and proactive relationships as a Red Raider community is essential to educating, engaging and empowering our students. I am excited to be part of a productive and positive fourth quarter!
Mahalo for your time, commitment and efforts,
Marlene Leary, Principal

April 2019 RED RAIDER NEWS Page 3
Aloha parents, guardians and families,
Welcome to the fourth quarter of school year 2018 - 2019.
We are very pleased with all of the hard work and growth we
have seen in our Kaua`i High School students this year.
This quarter the Senior Agreement is in full effect. The
behavior expectations for our seniors are a bit more rigorous as
they prepare for imminent entrance into college and career.
Students must abide by the state attendance requirement of 95%
for the school year (9 days/ 40 class periods). They will also
attend song practice during Advisory; the senior song will be
gifted to the community on commencement night. The
agreement specifies students suspended in the 4th quarter will
not be able to walk at graduation. This is a heartbreaking
consequence for all but we are compelled to insist upon the
appropriate behavior which will ensure future success. Students
found in possession of e cigarette “juice”/ devices on school
grounds or at school functions will be suspended and not allowed
to walk at the graduation commencement ceremony, no
exceptions.
The use of vaporizers to consume nicotine “juice” or
marijuana (dabbing) poses health risks and continues to be a
serious concern at Kaua`i High School. In Hawaii, the possession
and/ or use of marijuana wax is considered a felony according to
HAR 712.1246. If students have a vaporizing device in their
hand, in their bag or on their person, it is considered possession.
Please encourage your son/ daughter not to touch these devices.
If an illegal device or substance is found, students should alert an
adult immediately. Please help us to keep our campus drug free
and all students safe.
At Kaua`i High, we continue to teach, model and reinforce
appropriate behavior to prepare students for college and career.
While on campus, students must be in Kaua`i High school wear. It
is a challenging rule to enforce and we could use your assistance.
Please check that your teenager has school wear when they leave
your house. We do not want to teach them that rules don’t
matter.
Finally, we would like to welcome Officer Thompson, our
new SRO-School Resource Officer to Kaua`i High. With his help
we will continue to ensure students are in their assigned class
throughout the day. If a student is not in his/her assigned class
they are not being provided with an opportunity to learn and will
be considered Truant. Let’s work together to finish this school
year positively and productively.
Sincerely, Wendy Schwarze, VP grades 10 - 12 (last names A - K)
Joseph Hicks, VP grades 10 - 12 (last names L - Z)
Benjamin Kershner, VP grade 9
