Dear Resident,
A strong system of parks and recreation is a key component in maintaining a strong community. Quality parks and recreational opportunities help contribute to our growth, prosperity, and quality of life.
Our parks and recreation staff , under the leadership of Director Kim O’Farrell, is committed to improving our parks, upgrading our facilities, and providing the people of Massillon with top notch programming that will be of interest to all our residents.
There are great health, fi tness, and lifestyle programs and classes available at the Massillon Recreation Center for people of all ages. Check out the schedule and sign up for a class that meets your interests. You’ll be glad you did!
As we know, there is always a lot going on in Massillon.
As the people of our community have always held a special reverence for the sacrifi ce of our military veterans, we hope to see a large crowd at our Memorial Day parade this year.
The popular Summer Concert Series will be back for another season of great music and entertainment. The concerts are free for the public, and are paid for entirely by private donations, at no cost to our taxpayers. Take the opportunity to enjoy a night out at one of our concerts.
The Cruise-On-In & Dance Party returns to downtown on Saturday, June 18, and The City of Champions Independence Celebration will be held on July 3rd with great entertainment, and a spectacular fi reworks display.
We look forward to seeing everyone at these, and the other great events and activities happening throughout Massillon!
We care what you have to say. If you have a question, comment, suggestion, or idea, please do not hesitate to share it with a member of the parks and recreation staff , a recreation board member, a city council member, or myself. This is your parks and recreation department. Let us know what we can do better.
Sincerely,Kathy Catazaro-Perry,
Mayor, City of Massillon

Swim Lesson Policies & GuidelinesParents and Guardians must be present in the aquatic
center during their child’s swim lesson. This helps us if your child needs a bathroom break, to be extra eyes watching the water and applaud new skills achieved. Your applause means so much to them! However, it is never appropriate for a parent to become overly involved in the lesson or try to instruct. That’s what we are here for.
When signing up your child for swim lessons please check out our lesson descriptions and fi nd what best fi ts your child. If you have a question of what lesson to place your child in just ask and we will help assess your child to get them in the appropriate class.
All classes have a minimum of 3 participants per class and a maximum of 5 for ages 3-5 and 7 for 6+. Classes may be combined or canceled due to low enrollment.
You can register online at www.massillonparks.com, in person or over the phone at 330-832-1621. Registration closes 3 days before the class starts or when the class becomes full.
There will not be any makeup’s or credits given for personal absences. If we must cancel for any reason on our end you will receive a phone call and a make-up will be scheduled or a credit will be given.
If you have a concern about the way the lessons are going please tell us. We understand that you are extremely interested in your child’s success with swim lessons. We are too! IF you should ever have concerns please address them with us immediately. First, give us 2 lessons to fall into a routine and get the group used to working together. Second, communicate with your child’s instructor. Address them as you would like to be addressed. The Sandwich Theory: say something positive, voice the concern and end with something positive. Third, if you are not satisfi ed with the results please contact the Aquatics Supervisor so she can help your swimmer.

What is storm water and why do we need to manage it? Federal and State laws regulating water quality and the management of storm water necessitate that the City of Massillon re-evaluate the way it manages the water that runs off impervious surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, or rooftops. Storm water runoff carries pollutants directly to the Tuscarawas River and creeks and has the potential to create not only drainage and flooding problems but water quality issues throughout the city.
ADDRESSING THE NEEDS OF STORMWATER MANAGEMENT IN THE CITY OF MASSILLON focus
Winter is certainly here, and with it comes road salts, piles of snow and uninvited house guests (the furry kind). These seasonal sights may impact water quality, and our goal is to keep winter wonderful by preventing pollution from reaching our waterways.
Just like rain, snow-melt can carry pollutants into storm drains and streams. Think of all the black snow that accumulates along roadways; once it melts, that dirty water, full of petroleum products and other contaminants, finds its way to a stream, where it can harm wildlife and pollute our drinking water resources. By making smart decisions while battling the cold, ice and snow this season, we can prevent additional stormwater pollution. For example, salt used to prevent ice on driveways, roads and sidewalks can easily wash into freshwater streams and destroy aquatic ecosystems. And we all know that pests like rodents and insects love to hide out in our homes for warmth over the winter, but using pesticides or insecticides can harm the watershed. If used outdoors or disposed of improperly, these chemicals can be washed into our streams by stormwater. In our waterways, these chemicals have the same effects on aquatic organisms that they do on the pests in our homes. These pesticides and excess salts also reduce the quality of the water we use for drinking and recreation. Why not do your part this winter season to protect our streams from unnecessary stormwater pollution? Following these tips can help keep our water clean and protect the environment: Dispose of shoveled snow in vegetated areas; never dump it into streets or streams. The more water can be absorbed by plants or sink into the ground, the less water will run off, carrying pollutants into streams. A rain garden or other planted area is the perfect place for shoveled snow. Use safe and effective alternatives to salt for ice, and follow the application rate on the label. Safety is of utmost importance, but salt is damaging to plants, animals, concrete and water quality. Instead of focusing on melting the snow on your driveway or sidewalks, use sand to help gain traction. Or, use a salt-free de-icer. Remember, the sooner you shovel, the better, as less ice will form and less de-icer can be used. Use natural and non-toxic alternatives to chemical pesticides, and reduce indoor and outdoor chemical use. Boric acid is a low-toxicity mineral that is highly effective over time, another great alternative. There are also many herbal pest deterrents; for example, mint detracts mice. Salt products should always be stored under a roof or in an enclosed area. Never leave salt exposed to the weather elements.
