KATHLEEN MCGILVRAY
YWCA CEO BIG ISLAND
Kathleen McGilvray is a proud contributor to the
YWCA’s nearly 100 year legacy of community
commitment, celebrating women & girls, &
eliminating racism. She has 17 years of
management experience with private industry,
government, & nonprofit sectors, in addition to
experience working as a funder & recipient of
human service program funds.
Kathleen was attracted to the small town feel of Hilo,
which reminded her of the rural area where she attended high school & has since
lived in East Hawai‘i for 11 years. She loves to cook, garden, & dances Argentinian
Tango at the YWCA.
YWCA of Hawai‘i Island is a non-profit organization that is “dedicated to eliminating
racism, empowering women, & promoting peace, justice, freedom, & dignity for all.”
It is governed by a board of members who generously volunteer their time to represent
the membership of YWCA. The YWCA is comprised of both men & women of all ages ,
ethnicity, & occupations & graciously accept members of any, all, & no religious
preferences.
The YWCA provides its members with access to the many facilities & opportunities
including:
YWCA Aquatics: The solar-heated salt-water pools are great for water aerobics,
swimming lessons, & rental for parties
YWCA Preschool: The only nationally accredited preschool for 2 to 5 year olds on
Hawai‘i Island with swimming as a part of the curriculum.
YWCA Summer Childcare: All children from grades K-6 are able to participate in
activities that foster creativity, promote healthy choices, & respect for self & others. It is
also the only licensed summer school program with an on-site swimming pool.
YWCA Healthy Start & Enhanced Healthy Start: The only home visitation program in East
Hawai‘i to prevent child abuse, neglect, & provides support for children newborn to 3
years old & their families. Enhanced Healthy Start is for families referred by the Child
Welfare Services system.
YWCA Teen Court: The only way Big Island juveniles are able to own & make up for
their first time offenses & wipe their records clean. Teen peers will then create a
sentence ranging from community service to counseling.
YWCA Sexual Assault Support Services: The only 24/7 rape crisis center for all of Hawai‘i
Island that offers free support services which include victim crisis counseling and
therapy.
It was also mentioned that Lorraine Davis celebrated her 10 year anniversary with
YWCA. Congrats Lorraine!

VOLCANO WINERY
Volcano Winery has been in business for 25+ years, while Del & Marie Bothof
have owned it for the past 14 years. Their love for the community along with
their staff of 10+ years is what she says is one of the best parts about her job.
The Winery has seen a few changes over the years, however their ultimate
goal still remains to be the commitment to produce unique, award-winning
wines. Their wide selection of grape wines, fruit wines, & honey wines are
what make their winery special. They have since introduced tea plants
which have also been infused in a specialty wine called the Infusion as well
as black & white tea.
