Among the final team - which was selected from athletes who com- pleted a 30km time trial in Alice Springs on the weekend - is Kather- ine man Justin Miller. “The run was tough,” he said. “I came into it with a sprained ankle and knees hurting and I pulled my hamstring a few weeks ago so I wasn’t training and to finish under three hours is a good achievement. “It was tough and tiring and I wanted to stop but it felt like I can’t fail my kids because they are all sup- porting me – my family, my commu- nity and everyone in my town, my workplace, everybody is behind me so I didn’t want to stop even though I wanted to stop, but it was good to get to the end and I can finally smile,” the athlete said. Mr Miller, together with 11 other inspirational athletes, who are part of the Indigenous Marathon Project, had to complete the tough challenge through the red desert streets to se- cure themselves a ticket to the Big Apple. Indigenous Marathon Project founder and former World Champion Marathon runner Rob de Castella said the guts and determination and the mentality of not giving up that he had seen in all 12 athletes who made the final team, was what the project is all about. “We have a truly amazing group of runners this year and we have seen injuries, struggles at home and many other obstacles thrown at them time and time again, but they keep bounc- ing back and showing that if they want something, they can achieve it,” he said. “I have absolute faith that every one of the 12 runners will cross the finish line in New York, and along the way they will inspire hundreds and thousands of people across the world, but most of all they will inspire their families, their friends and their communities to be health- ier.” The squad, including Katherine’s Justin Miller, is now working on their final six week block of training before departing for New York on October 31, where they will compete in the prestigious New York Mara- thon, alongside 45,000 other athletes.
