It’s so nice to see the sun out for a few days. We have had enough winter weather.
Thank you to all who attended the special meeting to accept our new constitution. Kevin ex-
plained each item as he read them out, it was very important to us all that the constitution
covered all that we needed. Our thanks to Kevin for the work he put into it and the way he
made sure that everyone understood what each section referred to. The afternoon concluded
with a sausage sizzle, our thanks to the cooks. The sausages were cooked beautifully.

GARDENING WITH ROSS
Spring is well and truly here now. It is a great time to plant all the summer plants. In
the flower garden petunias are still the top plant. Why? Because there are so many
varieties, pastel colours through to dark blue, frilly large flowers through to small flowers
that love to hang over the edge of baskets. In the veg garden, climbing beans “Blue Lake”
and tomatoes, can all be grown in LARGE pots. Plants in pots need to be regularly watered

You know, people are less considerate now, Especially the young ones. They
speak in whispers all the time! If you ask them to speak up they just keep
repeating them selves, endlessly mouthing the same silent message until
they’re red in the face, What, do they think I am a lip reader?
We are doing it all over again! Jean and I are organising another
Warehouse Shopping Trip to help raise money for Tweed Hospital
Auxiliary. This year we hope to visit 7 warehouses–4 new ones includ-
ed. Fashion, shoes, giftware, manchester, chocolates and of course The
Christmas Shack for all Christmas goodies, plus more. We are trying to
keep travelling distance between outlets down and also organising a stop for lunch within
the area. Not as tiring– we hope! Date: Tuesday, November 8th. Depart Village @ 7.00am
NSW time. COST $48 (incl m/tea and lunch). Final date for payment: October 22nd.
List will be available shortly. If you wish to join us please contact Denise-171/5th Ave-
5599 8956 or Jean Carter 17/1st Ave-5599 9273.

CRAFT. Hello and welcome to our crafty news. We are looking forward to
Spring. We always wonder at the changes of seasons. They seem to come sooner
now that we are in our prime time of life and we wonder where the time has gone,
but if you are like me, we have had a great time arriving here. Our group are look-
ing for new members, if you are new to our village and wanting to while away a few hours,
in friendly company, why not come and join us in the Rec. Hall every Thursday at 1pm.

GOLF CROQUET NEWS. Organised games of golf croquet are conducted
every Saturday morning from 8.30am and ricochet on Wednesday mornings same

pions of the Tweed Coast. They are a very modest, great group and you will be made most
welcome. All you need to play is a hat, comfortable shoes and a smile as everything else is
provided. Nice clean fresh air and passive exercise is a little known recipe for longevi-
ty. Croquet offers this and more. Happy Hoop running until next time. Graham
INDOOR BOWLS. Numbers have been a little lower over the past few weeks
due to either illness or being away on holidays. To the 'not feeling too good' mem-
bers hope to see you back soon. Everything else. All good! Our Monday morn-
ings start off reasonably quiet, but it doesn't take long for the volume knob to be turned up
high. All good fun with lots of laughter. Never a dull moment on Monday mornings, come
along to the Rec hall from 9.30 to 11.30 and you will meet new friends. Denise

Have you noticed that stairs are getting steeper ; groceries are heavier ; and, every-
thing is farther away? Yesterday I walked to the corner and I was dumbfounded to
CANASTA. Last month the previous leader of our canasta group and our good
friend, Joy Roach, passed away. She will be sadly missed by all members of our
group. As Judy's offsider this month, I can report we had a good month albeit with a
few members missing due to seasonal ill health or others on their regular travels. We are trying
to gain some interest in adding some new members in not only Canasta but also in 500. If you
would like to play 500 or have a go at Canasta, please come along on any Wednesday. We start
at 1.00pm, have afternoon tea about 2.30pm and finish about 4.30pm.If you are interested in
commencing a 500 group or want to learn how to play canasta we have some willing people to
assist you, if you need it. It's all about having fun and enjoying the company. Go the boys team!

ROOKIES SNOOKER CLUB. I was away on holiday for two weeks of this
month, so a big THANK YOU goes to LYNDON for taking over the monthly BBQ
(Wed night). Which I am told went over very well. Also thanks to JOHN for doing
my usual daily jobs, and to all our wonderful helpers, what would we do without you. Raffle
winners were Jim Cairns and Duncan Fleming. Our next BBQ will be September 14th, so mark
that in your book, I know you don’t want to miss it. Until then be good. Trevor
SOCIAL GOLF. Here we are in August, how the year is flying by. We were
pleased with this month’s turnout, but once again had a few that could not play
for one reason or another. It was the first round of our Club Championships, best
out of 3 games so the ones that missed out this time will have a chance again in September. We
had 15 players a good number considering the ones that didn’t play. It was good to welcome a
new member John Asquith, who by all accounts enjoyed his day. Our winner was Michael Jef-
feries a new village resident. On to our barbeque. We had 23 who enjoyed the night. We dis-
cussed plans for our Christmas presentation night which I will follow up on. Look forward to
seeing you all on the 21st September until then stay happy and well. Maggie and Geoff
COMPUTER CLUB. We are a small group but have lots to talk about. We don ’t
know everything, but we can generally help you or point you in the right direction. We
don’t only talk about computers, we cover mobile phones, tablets, anything, and we
have a lot of fun doing it. We will have a go at just about anything. Why not call in, you might
learn something, then again you might teach us something. That’s what it is all about, helping
each other. We meet every FRIDAY starting at 10-00 lasting about an hour. We look forward
to seeing you. Stewart
LADIES GROUP. It has been a very quiet month for the ladies group, nice to see a good turn up for the Wednesday morning get together. Our next trip is to the Towri Sheep and Cheese farm at Beaudesert. Should be an interesting trip on the 8th September, a Thursday. A notice is on the social club board if you wish to go just pop your name down. I am sure we are all looking forward to Spring, my
favourite season in the year. Come along and enjoy a cuppa and meet some new friends Wednesdays at 10am in the hall. Carolyn
COBAKI COBBA's SOCIAL LAWN BOWLS CLUB. Fir stly, our tr ip to
Cudgen in July was once again a great day. We had a home cooked morning
tea on arrival prior to bowls, followed later by a tasty lunch and raffles. Some raf-
fles returning back to Cobaki. Next trip was a coach day out to Southport Bowls
Club. This was our first visit so all looked forward to the day. Everything was great! Top
bowling from our teams who enjoyed the challenge of playing pairs. Lunch was a sausage
sizzle with fresh salads, but the highlight - platters of prawns placed on each table. Think
they brought the trawler catch direct to the club. Prawns & more prawns. All agreed that
Southport should be on the list of club venues for next year. Time out also for some of the
ladies who either visited Australia Fair for some retail therapy or to the RSL to have fun on
the pokies. An excellent day! Moving on next to Cabarita Bowls on Sunday, September,
25th. Bowls at 9.30am with lunch of their famous Build a Burger approx 1.00pm. Please
keep a lookout for list on notice board. As agreed at our last meeting there would be no
meeting in September. Next meeting will be on Sunday, October 2nd in Rec Hall at
10.30am followed by hot dogs, cheese and bacon.
PLEASE NOTE. Change of date for Chr istmas New date, Sunday, November 27th. lunch at South Tweed 'Sports' Club returning back to Rec Hall. More info at meeting
Everything is in place for the October trip. Final date for payments - September 22nd.
Updated itineraries will be in mail boxes shortly. Think that's all for now! Jim
LIBRARY. This is just the weather to settle down with a good book, and we
have got the books in our library, no matter what sort of book you like to read.
Love story, western, murder and so on. But you don’t need me to tell you, call in
and have a look round, and you know the best part, it’s all free. Chris
TRIVIA. Another fun night, come and see what we do and how easy the ques-
tions are. If you don’t have a team of four, don’t worry, come along and we will
find you a delightful Cobakite to play with. The action starts the first Wednesday
of the month. The next game will take place on Wednesday September 7th.
I send out reminders a day or so prior. Team ANZACS were the winners by one point last month and Carol won the door prize. Looking forward to seeing you. Myrna
If you have trouble with ants, just sprinkle cheap talc powder on them and they
will soon be gone.
On the 23rd July 2016, Joy Roach turned 90.
A few of us from canasta club, who were able to attend helped
celebrate this momentous occasion with Joy at St Josephs Aged
Care Facility Tweed Heads South with a lovely morning tea
supplied by management and staff.
Joy’s ill health from cancer forced her retirement from Cobaki to
St Josephs, where she was extremely happy for the short time she
wast there, but, sadly on Wednesday morning the 10th August,
Joy gave up her fight for life from extreme pain and passed away
peacefully. Joy was our canasta group leader from Dec 2010 to
March 2016, and although only 8 years in the village was known
to quite a few residents. She will be sadly missed by us all.
MAY YOU NOW REST IN PEACE
FROM ALL YOUR CANASTA GROUP FRIENDS.
Thank you Ellie.
It is with sadness we bring you the news of the passing of
JOY ROACH house 261
She passed away on 10th August 2016.
Joy had been in the village 8 years and became leader
of the Canasta in 2010 until 2016.
A very lovely lady to all who knew her. More about Joy below.
Helping Hands are a group of residents from Cobaki Village who assist you with a wake in
the hall. This is a service provided for village residents and their families at the passing of a
loved one. If the loved one is a member of the Social Club the wake is provided free to the value
of $100, anything over that is paid by the family. If they are not a member the service is still
provided but the cost is covered by the family. The bar is open if the family request it.
This service has been carried out in the village from its inception. Whatever function happens to
be on the day of the funeral it is cancelled, the wake taking precedence.
If you have any enquiries contact Mary Colgate on phone 5599 7506 who has taken over con-
trol of this very important service.
If you would like to be part of the Helping Hand team, please give Mary a ring
She does need more helpers. The more she has the better.

their future. We have a new Avon lady to take her place, Denise Morton. She is at house 171

I remember the shop on the corner,
Where biscuits for pennies were sold
Do you think I'm a bit too nostalgic?
Or is it....I'm just getting old?
Bathing was done in a wash tub,
With plenty of rich foamy suds
But the ironing seemed never ending
As Mum pressed everyone's 'duds'.
I remember the slap on my backside,
And the taste of soap if I swore
Anorexia and diets weren't heard of
And we hadn't much choice what we wore.
Do you think that bruised our ego?
Or our initiative was destroyed?
We ate what was put on the table
And I think life was better enjoyed.
