Von D, 28, is the entrepre-neurial owner of High Volt-age Tattoo in Hollywood,Calif., and the star of theTLC series based there, "L.A.Ink." She's also the creator ofa Sephora makeup line(which includes tattoo con-cealer), the founder of theMuslnk Tattoo & MusicFestival and author of twobooks, this and 2009's auto-biographical "High VoltageTattoo." I think that's probably the onlything I didn't see eye-to-eye onwith the publisher. The publishersaid we need more pictures ofyou. But they're not like Maxim[magazine-style pinupJ shots.

Tattooing was illegal in New YorkCity from 1961to 1997, and cer'tainly very few women had them.It was all much more under-ground. Now, everyone seems tohave a tattoo. What changed?

Even just l0 years ago, tattoo-ing wzts so different than it isnow. Part of that has to do withthe popularity of television showslike "L.A. Ink" and showing to themasses that tattooing is an artform and not something negative.'It was surrounded by stigma forrro long.
