Learning to think holistically involves probing at the deeper questions of not just howsomething happens but why andlooking at the complex experiencethat is being human.

In Kenya, some of the most valuableexperiences, when I truly learned themost were outside of a textbook or aclass. True knowledge comes from not just theories but the reality outside them.

Education and knowledge aboutthe world enables people tocontrol their own destinies andinfluence others.

Learning to love the act of livingamong people who don’t think,talk, dance, eat, ect. quite likeyou.

Thinking of the world as more thanwhere you came from. It means tobe a global citizen and think of the far reaching impacts of our policies and actions.

The perception of time in Kenya is fundamentally different than what I’ve grown up with. I’ve learned to appreciate looking at the bigger picture beyond what will get done today or tomorrow.

Living in a different culture means learning to live in someone else’s shoes for 4 months. To experience another culture’s life is astepping stone to being able to understanding something beyondyourself and the world.

Living in another country means being vulnerable at times and dependent on others. Living in Kenya, particularly means less of an emphasis on the individual and more focus on the family and those around you.

Although reflection and learning are an important part of the process of developing as a person - without action these developments are essentially meaningless.
