Momella Lakes

Activity:We visit the Momella Lakes in Arusha National Park – seven volcanic lakes embedded in breathtaking scenery. Flamingos are spreading their wings and soaring gracefully into the open sky above hippos and giraffes. Bushbuck, Dikdik and warthogs may shyly glimpse from behind tall grass, carefully checking out the vast savannah.

Half Day Activity Day 1

Description:The area around the Momella lakes, which is located in an altitude of 1400 m, extends over the north-eastern part of the Arusha National Park and is surrounded by green hills. You find here six lakes, surrounded by bush savanna and acacias. Several hollows werde formed by the last eruption of Mount Meru, which have a porous ground like a volcano, so that water can come to the surface and offers enough water for the lakes. The biggest and also most interesting ones are the Big and the Small Momella Lake, together they cover an area of 4 km. Flamingos prefer especially the Small Lake because of the high amount of alkali.

Fullday activity Meru Crater Tour Day 2Activity:After breakfast you leave for a fullday activity to Mount Meru. On the way up one passes through 3 different vegetation zones, starting from savannah, through forest and into dense jungle, reminiscent of landscapes in the movie “Lord of the Rings”. With the changing flora, there is also an alteration in wildlife species to be seen along the way. Upon reaching Kitoto Viewpoint, at an altitude of appro. 2500 meters, an armed ranger provides an escort on the final climb into the crater. After about two hours walk, the group returns to the vehicle and heads downhill again. Next to a picturesque waterfall, a traditional picnic awaits you to replenish burnt energy, throughout which a spectacular view of rolling plains and Kilimanjaro looming in the background is offered. After lunch, another short walk leads to the Tululusia Waterfall, cascading down and soaking those who venture too close to the foot of it.Accomodation at Hatari Lodge with full board (excluding drinks from john Wayne Bar).

Description:The highest point of Arusha Nationalpark is Mount Meru. With an altitude of 4566 m above sea level it is the fourth highest Mountain in Africa and the second highest in Tanzania. Sometimes, during chilly months, Mount Meru is covered by a snowcrest. The steep back of the crater edge, from which only half is still existing, on the western park border. Nowadays Mount Meru is an exstinct volcanic mountain, except of some steam holes, which are unique scenery for nature- and mountain climbers.

The open cone, which is open to the eastern side, burrows a mountain rainforest with swept becks, refreshing water falls and jungle giants, which are enlaced of lianas.

Tululusia Waterfalls – WalkHalfday activity

Description:We provide a walking safari through Arusha National Park to the sparkling waters of the Tulusia waterfalls. We start our walking safari at the momella gate. Together with an armed ranger we go deeper and deeper into this mountain rain forest. We pass a clearing with buffaloes. Further on you may see colobus monkeys in the branches of the trees or little bushbucks whizzing through the thicket. Reaching Tululusia waterfalls it's time for a rest. Enjoy the refreshing water playing around your feet! After this relaxing break we return home. Exotic twittering birds accompany our walk with their joyful singing. We arrive at momella gate again where we will be picked up by a Hatari representative and return to the lodge.

Fullday Activity Ngurdoto Crater Hike Day 3The story tells about the legendary Gurumico, who according to the Meru and Maasai roams the Ngurdoto Crater. But do not fear, there will be a ranger to accompany our tour. Since the Margarete Trappe era no human was allowed to walk in the crater. Hatari Lodge is now granted a trial period to enter the crater floor with our guests on foot. The legend of Gurumico is just one out of many fairytales about the Ngurdoto Crater. Margarete Trappe, known as the white hunter and owner of the Trappe farm once discovered the crater while she was following the tracks of an obviously huge elephant bull. When she saw him and his impressive figure she could not shoot him and was therefore rewarded with the sudden appearance of Ngurdoto Crater.

“And that's how it happened, at night , in total darkness. They were sleeping nearby the fire on the ground holding each other softly.

The first thing he heard was the rattle of Saida and first he thought she was speaking to him while dreaming. Then there was thisbreath over his face and this pain when fingerlong fangs cutted

into his neck and his face. And then his lower jaw broke . Just for a glimpse he had open his eyes and saw something huge and black

with amber-coloured eyes. ...”

Fullday Activity Ngurdoto Crater HikeDescription:The Ngurdoto Crater is also known as “Little Ngorongoro Crater”. This beautiful part of the park looks like a stranded Ark in the middle of a jungle. You are driven around the Ngurdoto Crater, which has a diameter of 2,5 km, over a steep mountain line. From the crater edge you have an amazing view past tree giants, lianas and strangler figs into the crater. More than half of the crater ground is covered by swamps. The Ngurdoto Crater is famous for its animals.

After breakfast we drive to the crater to meet our ranger. We descent down the slopes onto the crater floor on foot where we find a unique jungle landscape. Leaving the rain forest wide open meadows arrange themselves in front of our eyes. We come across islands of huge papyrus in lakes hiding buffaloes and warthogs. And with a bit of luck we might get a glimpse of Babu, a massive elephant bull who enjoys his retirement on the crater floor.

Alternative: Ngurdoto Crater Tour as a fullgame drive Day 3Activity:On this day we suggest a full day game drive within the Arusha National Park to the Ngurduto Crater. You will have a great view of Mt. Meru rock formations. Inside the park’s ‘little Ngorongoro Crater’ we find buffalos, warthogs and giraffes, which regularly come to graze and occasionally even the elephants. The drive to the crater is followed by a stop at the legendary viewpoint once frequented by Margarete Trappe and later also Hardy Krüger and Jim Mallory. The trip continues to Ngongongare Springs at the heart of the national park, followed by a game drive crossing “little Serengeti” and Mgoda Pass. We return to the Lodge in time for a sundowner and later on dinner.

Desription:The Ngurdoto Crater is also known as “small Ngorongoro“. This beautiful part of the park looks like a stranded Noah‘s Ark in the middle of a jungle. You dirve around the Ngurdoto Crater, which has a diameter of 2,5 km, over a steep mountain line. From the crater edge you have an amazing view between tree giants, lianas and strangler figs into the crater. Over half of the crater ground is covered by swampland. The Ngurdoto Crater is famous for the animals found inside the crater.

Page 13: KARIBU TANZANIA · Kilimanjaro to end our day. All tents are equipped with en-suite bathroom, toilet and shower with colorful decorations of Maasai Art; each tent has its own veranda

Shu'mata Camp Welcomes YouDescription:The Camp is located at the foot of Kilimanjaro, deep in Maasai land, in an area known as South Amboseli. Large East African tents, in true Hemingway - style are lined on a hill which offers magnificent views in all directions. At the front of the camp, bush savannah melts into the slopes of Kilimanjaro, towering above into the blue skies of Africa. The view is so clear that on a moonlit night, details of the glaciers may be visible. Seasonally, the surrounding savannah bush teems with wildlife - large herds of elephant, eland, zebra and wildebeest, Oryx as well as Grants and Thompson Gazelle.

Activity:Arrival from Hatari Lodge, West Kilimanjaro Airstrip, Arusha Airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport. We recommend an arrival around noon or in the afternoon. We try to avoid night transfers. On arrival at the camp we enjoy a sundowner on top of the hill in front of Mt. Kilimanjaro to end our day.

All tents are equipped with en-suite bathroom, toilet and shower with colorful decorations of Maasai Art; each tent has its own veranda with up-lifting views. Outside, under the great African sky the open fireplace adds a true feeling of adventure and safari romance. Discover the wonderful stars in the sky after sunset and enjoy delicious food on a long table with all guests.

Shu'mata Maasai experience

In Maijo's language, Maa, “Shu'mata” means something like “above the clouds” or “heaven”. To me, this luxurious refuge, made up of a handful of living tents in Hemingway style, is a piece of the very magic of which East Africa is made. “Shu'mata” is not a real national park, not folklore commercialized, not even a 'real' hotel. It is a small but amazing permanent camp on a hill in the midst of original Maasailand. It is an unforgetable place, even if not memorized on photographs.

Activity:Enjoy on 2 days an in depht Massai experience to gain the insight in Maasai tradition and their daily life.

We offer several activities. A Maasai naturalist walk, and traditional adventures in front of the gorgeous setting of the unique Kilimanjaro. Explore the Amboseli on a guided armed Tour with a Ranger. You are welcome in one of the Maasai Boma.

Description:Water is more precious than diamonds in an area as dry and arid as the Sinya Steppe. The Maasai living in this area are constantly threatened by drought and often have to carry water from distances of many kilometers. Most of the Maasai living in this steppe in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro do not have permanent access to drinking water, it is often difficult, sometimes even impossible, to find water for livestock or domestic use. Every day, Maasai women and girls have the daunting task of locating and transporting water to their homes and villages. The Maasai have to return to being the guardian of nature. To us, the land came first, then came the animals, and in the end came man. Balance is the key word - balance with nature, but also a new balance for the Maasai people, between old and, new. Let's protect the environment - man, land and beast.” (Ole Molloimet -Maasai Elder) On this tour the Maasai share with us their wide knowledge of herbs and medicines, and introduce us to their unique lifestyle and land, where they have been living for several centuries in spite of the long dry seasons. Experience and gain an insight into their daily lifestyle off the beaten track. In the late afternoon you will return to the camp, where a sundowner on the hill is waiting for you. Here you can enjoy beautiful views across the wide open savannah.

Amboseli Tour Day 2Description:

This barren land, scattered with “islands” of old acacia forests and seasonal swamps flank the pans of the ‘embosel’ ecosystem which stretches to the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is this region, away from the busy tourism areas of northern Tanzania, where the elderly elephants retreat to spend their final years – in peace and harmony and away from the madding crowds. On foot with Maasai warriors or in open-top game-drive vehicles we get within arms reach of Africa’s largest mammals. Timeless moments. Sensing the great peace and beauty of these magnificent creatures and calmly sharing the habitat with the Maasai and their cattle, a true original part of Africa.

Activity (depending on the season)As a half-day trip (mostly during summer): Early in the morning, set out for a game drive to southern Amboseli with a wonderful packed breakfast, which you will have out in the bush. Later on head back to the camp for lunch.

As a full-day trip (mostly during winter): With this tour you are out in the bush for the whole day. After a nice breakfast at the camp set out for a game drive to southern Amboseli with a wonderful packed lunch, which you will have out in the bush. Continue the game drive and in the early evening head back to the camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Migration of the Amboseli Elephants

Echo – The MatriarchIn order to inspire others to follow you, it is necessary to possess wisdom, experience, heart, determination to provide for them, to ensure their safety and teach them things they need to know for their survival. Echo grew to possess all of these strengths and more in her remarkable life as matriarch of an elephant family. She died of natural causes at the age of sixty-five in May, 2009. Her family still grieves her loss, but thanks to her legacy of wisdom was able to struggle against the worst drought ever recorded in Amboseli and face challenges that are beyond anything they have experienced before. Even as they learn to live without her, Echo is their guide. This is her final gift to them.

Last year up to 36,000 elephants were killed for their ivory. 1 life lost every 15 minutes. At the current rate of poaching African Elephants could face extinction in the wild by 2025.

Maasai Boma Visit Day 2 Activity:From our Shu’mata Camp, we organise a visit to a Maasai boma. Boma is the traditional homestead of the maasai people, who are semi-nomadic. The women build the traditional huts, made of a wooden structure, into which a mix of clay and cow dung is plastered as walls, this is then covered with natural roofing materials such as straw. These huts give into weather conditionsand have to be rebuilt every six years on average. The Maasai are mainly cattle herders, but don’t usually eat meat on a daily basis. Instead, they drink milk in large quantities and occasionally supplement their diet with fresh blood obtained by making a small cut into the animal’s throat without killing it.

Description:An interesting excursion awaits you to a Maasai boma in the Sinya flat. Here you will get a very good insight into the daily life and tradition of the Maasai. Later in the afternoon you will enjoy a wonderful sundowner at a very nice place in the middle of the Maasai steppe. Dinner and overnight will be at the camp.

Page 19: KARIBU TANZANIA · Kilimanjaro to end our day. All tents are equipped with en-suite bathroom, toilet and shower with colorful decorations of Maasai Art; each tent has its own veranda

Description:During the day the diversity of species is very high here in the maasai steppe. A lot of wild animals live here and you can see them outside in the bush. But when you get the chance to do a night game drive, you should take it, because at night different animals are on their way through the bush.

Night Game DriveActivity:After a sundowner on the plains at Shu'mata you will take a night game drive by jeep. You get the possibility to see wild animals and take amazing pictures at close range. Return to the camp for late dinner and enjoy a relaxing glass of wine of your choice.

Description:In 1906 Margarete Trappe arrived on an ox wagon from the coast. Her courage and pioneering spirit set the tone when she traveled the picturesque Meru-Pass, at which her new home - Momella - was situated. A big farm was created and built by the Trappe family where they kept cattle, horses and goats and enjoyed the surroundings and the abundant wildlife. The start of the First World War brought a cat-and-mouse game between Margarete Trappe and the English soldiers and earned her the nickname Iron Lady for her stubbornness, strength and courage.

Activities:However fate was not kind to Margarete. Disowned and bankrupt she returned to Meru and started rebuilding a new farm called Ngongongare or “Yejo’s” - her Maasai name. Financial survival was however finally secured by highly profitable trophy hunting after she became the first female professional hunter in East Africa. Fittingly, her last tribute was paid by her beloved elephant herd as they gathered around her house in 1957 when she passed away. You follow the tracks of Margarte Trappe. You visit the house, where she was living in former times and the grave of this famous woman.Accomodation at Hatari Lodge with full board (excluding drinks from the John Wayne Bar).

Activity:To discover the Momella Lakes with a boat is one of the highlights of the Hatari safaris. Gliding softly through the water is a very nice feeling, because you are getting a different kind of view. You drive past flamingos, buffalos and maybe hippos. Together with guides you paddle in boats through another world and experience the beauty of this landscape. At arounf 2 pm your canoeing tour will start, where by all will paddle through another world to experience the beauty of this area.

“Why is the lake so pink?”“Because there are thousands and thousands of flamingos spreading across the lake, their voices producing a sound that resembles a river

flowing somewhere!”Whether alkali or sweet water lake, river or ocean. Imagine yourself on a boat, smoothly gliding through the water, listening to the sounds of

birds, insects and animals in the bush, accompanied by the regular splash of your row. Perhaps, like the tip of a stone, you discover a hippo

at a distance, stop the boat and quietly observe it.

“All I wanted to do now was get back to Africa. We had not left it, yet, but when I would wake in the night I would lie, listening, homesick for it already… I loved the country so that I was happy as you after you have been with a woman that you really love, when, empty, you feel it welling up again and there it is and you can never have it all and yet what there is, now, you can have, and you want more and more, to have, and be, and live in, to possess now again for always, for that long, sudden-ended always… if you have loved some woman and some country you are very fortunate, and if you die afterwards it makes no difference.”

Green Hills of Africa, Ernest Hemingway
