comparison to a shorter term weight loss only intervention. A total of 450 adults across 30 churches will be
involved.
Principal Investigator: Karen Yeary. Duration: 2012-2013 Integrating Culture, Behavior, and Biology to Increase Minority Representation in Cancer Disparities Research
(Know HOW). (1 P20 MD002329-01). National Institutes of Health-NIMHD. Paul Green, Ph.D. (Co-PI)
Award amount: $48,564
This community-based participatory project refined and pilot tested a culturally appropriate, theory-guided
behavioral intervention addressing risks common to multiple diseases (cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular
disease) to promote full participation in translational research examining behavioral and biological
processes associated with breast cancer disparities. The intervention’s materials and methods were
developed from a previous NIH-funded qualitative study (Community Perspectives on Health Behavior and
Chronic Illness (POW-WOW)) and were refined for pilot testing in the study. The primary measure of
research participation was the proportion of women attending the public service program who provided a
blood sample to examine measures of metabolic dysregulation. The proportion of women who authorized
release of program records to document completion of mammography and mammography results for
research purposes also were monitored as a secondary measure of research participation.
Principal Investigator: Karen Yeary. Duration: 2011-2012 Development and Implementation of a Community Health Center-based data warehouse for systematic, state-
wide breast cancer screening. Arkansas Cancer Coalition.
Award amount: $74,769
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health,
UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, and the Community Health Centers of Arkansas, Inc.
(CHCA) worked together to create a data warehouse that consolidates information from four Community
Health Center’s (CHCs) Electronic Health Records (EHR). The data warehouse will document cancer and
screening disparities among underserved Arkansans, and identify CHC patients overdue for breast cancer
screening for referral to the UAMS Cancer Institute to facilitate system-wide screening.
Karen H. Kim Yeary 4
Co-Investigator: Karen Yeary. Duration: 2010-2012 Patient/Provider Perspectives on the Health Care Process: Formative Research. (1 P20 MD002329-03) National
Institutes of Health-NIMHD. Kate Stewart, M.D. (PI).
Award amount: $99,985
The overall purpose of the study is to conduct formative research with University of Arkansas for Medical
Sciences (UAMS) Ob/Gyn faculty, residents, students, and patients to develop an intervention designed to
reduce provider racial bias and improve empathetic communication. Surveys, in-depth interviews, and focus
groups will be used to collect the data.
Co-Principal Investigator: Karen Kim. Duration: 2009 Pilot Study of Recruitment Procedures for R21 Study of Racial Discrimination and Birth Outcomes. Grant from
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Kate Stewart, M.D. (PI)
Award amount: $3,000
This observational study piloted recruitment procedures for research that will subsequently be proposed in
an NIH R21 application. This future study will include clinic-based surveys of pregnant women and follow-
up interviews, using telemedicine, with women reporting experiences of racial discrimination (EOD). These
data will be used to develop, and test the feasibility of using telemedicine to implement, a stress
management intervention to address stress from EOD during pregnancy.
Co-Principal Investigator: Karen Kim. Duration: 2009 Examining African American Women’s Perspectives about their Pregnancy that resulted in a Low Birth Weight
Baby. (P20 NR009006-01). Tailored Biobehavioral Interventions Research Center a P20 grant through the National
Institute of Nursing Research, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Sarah Rhoads, Ph.D. (PI)
Award amount: $7,484 The purpose of this pilot was to explore African American women’s attitudes and beliefs regarding the
causes of low-birth weight babies. This project utilizes focus group methodology and samples urban and
rural recently pregnant African American women.
Co-Investigator: Karen Kim. Duration: 2008-2013. Colorectal Cancer Education and Screening Program (Empowering Communities for Life). (1R24MD002805-
01). National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. Rhonda Henry-Tillman, M.D. (PI).
Award amount: $2,483,642 The purpose of this randomized controlled trial is to test whether a culturally appropriate approach will be
more effective than a standard approach to encourage colorectal screening through fecal occult blood test
(FOBT). Both are hypothesized to increase screening rates compared to the control. The project utilizes a
community-based participatory approach and targets two underserved counties in the Arkansas Delta,
specifically Northeast (Mississippi County) and Southeast (St. Francis County).
Principal Investigator: Karen Kim. Duration: 2007-2009. Adaptation and Translation of Evidence-Based Weight Loss Methods and Materials for a Faith-Based, Rural,
African American Adult Population (The WORD). (1 P20 MD002329-01). National Institutes of Health-NIMHD.
Award amountU: $60,000
The purpose of the pilot was to develop and pre-test materials and methods for a faith-based weight loss
intervention culturally adapted for rural African American adults. Data from female and male church-goers
were gathered through 4 focus groups (1 group with pastors, 1 group with church leaders, 1 group with
Sunday School teachers, 1 group with parishioners) to cultural adapt, with a faith-based emphasis,
preexisting materials and methods from current evidence-based obesity programs. The feasibility of the
intervention was then piloted in 3 churches. Community members were trained to deliver the intervention as
lay health advisors.
Karen H. Kim Yeary 5
Principal Investigator: Karen Kim. Duration: 2007-2008. Community Perspectives on Health Behavior and Chronic Illness (POW-WOW). (U01 CA114607-03S2A1).
National Institutes of Health-NCI.
Award amountU: $50,000 Community Perspectives on Health Behavior and Chronic Illness was a community-based participatory
pilot that employed focus group methodology to create culturally appropriate recruitment materials to
promote participation in clinical breast cancer prevention research examining associations between
sociocultural factors, indicators of metabolic syndrome (e.g. obesity, triglycerides, blood glucose), and
biological factors in breast cancer etiology. Eight focus groups of African American and Caucasian women
were conducted to create faith-based, culturally appropriate recruitment materials and methods. The
feasibility of the recruitment materials will be tested in the currently funded Integrating Culture, Behavior,
and Biology to Increase Minority Representation in Cancer Disparities Research. Data from this pilot and
Integrating Culture, Behavior, and Biology to Increase Minority Representation in Cancer Disparities
Research will be used to test the efficacy of these recruitment materials in clinical breast cancer research
participation through a future randomized, controlled trial.
Principal Investigator: Karen Kim. Duration: 2005-2008. The WORD, United States Department of Agriculture, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
UAward amountU: $90,000 The WORD was a faith-based, participatory program to develop partnerships with the faith community to
improve the health of the Lower Mississippi Delta Arkansas faith community. A Faith Task Force of
religious leaders and community organizations representing 42 counties of the Arkansas Lower Mississippi
Delta was assembled and served as a collaborative partner in conducting a health assessment of local
churches. Priorities of healthy weight, nutrition, and physical activity were identified.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Degree Program Co-Developed
PhD in Health Promotion and Prevention Research, Department of Health Behavior and Health
Education, Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Members of the Health Behavior and Health Education PhD Program Development Committee worked with
other faculty members in the department to develop the department’s PhD program, which is one of the
doctoral programs required to maintain accreditation by the Association of Schools of Public Health.
Karen H. Kim Yeary 14
Committee members assisted in the development of the curriculum, the procedures for admissions,
comprehensive exams, and in dissertation research.
Course and Syllabi Developed
Faith-Based Health Promotion (PBHL 9253), Department of Health Behavior and Health Education, Fay
W. Boozman College of Public Health, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences This course reviews the literature on religion and health, and faith-based health promotion. Students explore
the complex relationships between religion and health, and apply the literature on religion and health into
the design of faith-based public health interventions. Students gain experience in building upon the current
religion and health literature, and in the design of public health interventions that are appropriate for a faith-
based setting.
Program Planning and Evaluation (PBHL 5623), Department of Health Behavior and Health Education,
Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences This course is designed to help the learner develop the fundamental understanding and skills necessary to
implement program planning, implementation, and evaluation irrespective of setting. It provides both
theoretical and practical information in program development and community-based participatory research.
The course provides an overview of community-based participatory research and methods; describes health
disparities and social determinants of health; introduces models for health education and health promotion
programs; conducts a simulated needs assessment and describes the parameters related to
qualitative/quantitative measures, samples, and data collection; and reviews health behavior theories and
models and links application of theory to intervention activities. Community guest lecturers are
incorporated in the course.
