“On behalf of the board of directors of KADO, I am pleased to

present Directors’ Annual Report to the members of Annual General

Meeting (AGM). During 2016, KADO continued to work on many

employable skills to the youth of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB). I would like to

INTRODUCTION

KADO is a not for profit and community based civil society organization based in Gilgit-Baltistan registered in 1998 under Companies Ordinance of 1984-85. KADO strives to develop human and institutional capacities for equitable and sustainable development in the region.

This Directors’ report for the Financial Year (FY) 2016, from January to December, is being presented to the 18th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of KADO. The previous AGM was held on August 13, 2016 at Hill Top Hotel Karimabad Hunza. During the 17th AGM, Mr. Ghulam Amin Beg, Mr. Ghulam Mustafa and Mr. Izhar Hunzai were elected as new directors of the KADO board in place of Mr. Aman Ullah Khan, Mr. Muhammad Muzafar and Mr.Babar Khan who retired after successful completion fo their services to the organization..

Project wise Progress

1. Women Vocational IT Skills Trainings (WVT)

Women Vocational (IT) Skills Training (WVT) is one of the important project of KADO, initiated in

collaboration with the Government of Pakistan during

2005-6. The project is focused on socio economic

empowerment of women of GB by enhancing their

capacities and competencies in basic Information

Technology (IT) skills. During the first and second phase of

the project KADO trained around 7000 females in its 34 IT

skills training centers across all Districts in Gilgit -Baltistan.

Project Goal

To enhance IT skills of 12,000 young female student and

socio-economic empowerment of women folk of GB by

enhancing their capacities and competencies in IT and other

related fields

Achievements

During the said period, the following activities and targets

accomplished.

- Maintenance service provided to 33 centers

completed

- Feasibility study conducted and submitted to P&DD

for approval

- A total of 2841 students are trained

- 45 women trained e-earning and e-learning and

linked them with market.

- Conducted 3 weeks refresher training for the

Master Trainers.

- Developed 3 village development plans and

remainings are in progress.

- Provided internet connectivity in 5 training centers

and are in communication with SCO for extending the service to other centers as well.

- A set for 6 training manual books are developed and teaching in the centers.

2. HiMaT Indigenous Leadership & Development Program (HiMaT)

The HiMaT Indigenous Leadership and Development Program is focused on building the capacity of

remote rural communities, institutions and leaders for sustainable peace, prosperity and wellbeing

in GB through the services of a regional training, coaching

and support center and the creation of partnerships that

strengthen indigenous social and economic development

processes.

To address the objectives, the following activities carried

out during the review period;

Achievements

- Trained 435 community members from Hunza

region on different development themes.

- Organized 02 conferences for the Chairman and

Directors of all 9 LSOs for formation of networking.

- Facilitated AGMs and election of new Directors in

GOLSON, MASO, GOLD and GRSO.

- The prpgram team organized inter-instituitional

conferecnes for the V/WOs and CBOs in Gulmit and

Shinaki LSO jurisdiction.

- Mobilized the women from 4 LSO jurisdiction in

formation of women specific associations.

- Organized sessions on addressing the emerging

issues of Ultra-poor families at three LSOs in Upper,

Central and Lower Hunza.

- Granted seed money support to 20 groups in Shinaki

Area for initiating of Livelihood activities. 80% of the

participants in this activity are women.

- Facilitated and supported LSOs in Central Hunza in

developing of their 10 years development plans as

well as Annual action planning at all 9 LSOs.

- Conducted to regional level Women Conferences in Upper, Central Hunza and Lower Hunza.

- Extended Rs.50,000 each financial support to the volunteers from Shimshal and Chiuprson for

their service during the flood damages in April 2016.

- Developed participatory impact evaluation report of the program.

3. Empowerment of Unemployed youth through ICT/DIT

KADO in partnership with National Vocational Technical Training (NAVTTC) launched a project called

Diploma in Information Technology (DIT). The project was for a six months period and aimed at to

provide IT skills to youth including female.

Project Goal

To empower 40 unemployed youth of Hunza though Diploma in Information Technology (DIT) for

providing an enhanced skill of employee ability.

Achievements:

- Identified 200 potential youth for online IT center training. The candidates were properly

interviewed by the team of NAVTTC and selected 40 potential trainees.

- Two skilled trainers from within KADO deputed for the training in the center.

- A proper training module and manual was developed with consultation of the NAVTTC team

- The 6 month diploma training was successfully completed within the given time frame. The

technical and monitoring team frequently visited the center during and after the completion

of the project.

- A comprehensive trainee’s database was developed and shared with NAVTTC.

- One of KADO trainee participated in the Skill Competition organized by NAVTTC at Local,

Regional and National Level. The trainee got first position at District and Regional level

competition.

- The project was successfully completed at the agreed time and reported to NAVTTC.

4. Harnessing Indigenous Culture for Economic Empowerment

KADO in partnership with the Hashoo Foundation and funding support of Danish Government CKU

implemented a year long project for the women and man artisans in Hunza, Ghizer and Chitral.

Project Goal

Poverty alleviation through cultural revitalization, peace building, improve livelihood,

democratization and human rights and gender equality.

Achievements:

- Through a baseline survey KADO identified more than 500 potential trainees from the target

project areas.

- Established training centers in Hunza, Ghizer and Chitral. In which trainings on Stone Carving

(Beats Making), Masonry, Wood Carving and artificial jewelry imparted to the young male

and female.

- 60 female were trained in wood carving while 120 male and female were trained in stone

carving and masonry.

- Apart from the training 22 business groups were formed including 9 Music, 6 Wood Carving

and 7 masonry in all project area.

- Imparted training to 22 groups on value chain development and established directory of all

formed groups.

- Closed successfully the project in collaboration with Hashoo Foundation.

5. Supporting Female Graduates’ Access into Information Technology (IT)

During the reviewed period KADO in partnership with Aurat Foundation implemented a yearlong

project specific to enhance the skills of young female

graduates through IT trainings and internship

opportunities.

Project Goal

To empower 120 graduate female youth through specialized IT based capacity building training and internship opportunity with local institutions over the period of 15 moths

Achievements

- Conducted baseline Survey ( 254 graduates and 103 institutions identified)

- Developed training modules on IT employable skills with the coordination of ECI

- 120 female trainees trained in specialized IT skills and placed in different institutions

- 6 Workshops conducted for trainees on gender awareness

- 7 Workshops conducted on Gender awareness for

employers

- Developed database of all the trainees and internship

participants.

- Provided internship to 120 female and 22 graduates

got jobs during internship

- The project was successfully completed and closed in

August.

6. Socio-Economic Empowerment of Youth in Chitral through ICT Project Goal

To empower 200 unemployed youth of Chitral through specialized IT based training and online

earning employment opportunities.

Achievements

- The project was implemented in collaboration Hashoo Foundation

- Developed training modules with the support of partner organization and trainers.

- Identified and trained 200 youth from the region in the said trade and linked them with online

markets.

- Frequent and regular monthly reporting to the world bank

- The team conducted two monitoring visits to chitral to overview the project progress

- Certificate distributed the trainees.

- Project completion report submitted to World Bank.

- Will be participating in the summer conference of World Bank submit in Peshawar in this

summer.

7. Impact Study of the Value Added Fruit Products “ Apricot and Apple”

KADO in partnership with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) conducted a survey on the evaluating of the impact of value added of Apricot and Apple fruit products. The survey was conducted in District Hunza, Nager and Skardu.

Project Goal

Conduct impact study of 650 households in 21 villages of District Hunza, Nager and Skardu

Achievements

- 5 supervisors and 30 enumerators recruited

- Conducted Training for team members

- Designed group and assign areas for 4 groups

- Interviewed 650 farmers from the target districts

- Developed data bank and shared with JICA consultants

- Impact study report prepared and shared with .

- Successfully closed the project on due date through a project closing ceremony.

8. Rehabilitation Centre/Project

KADO focus has remained on improving the lives of people with disabilities by supporting efforts that

promote inclusion, and that empower people with disabilities to express their views, raise awareness

and advocate for their rights. It focuses on creating an

environment that allows people with disabilities to have

their voices heard in matters that affect them. For KADO,

empowerment also means challenging negative attitudes

towards disability, and providing opportunities so people

with disability are enabled to empower themselves and

others. The rehabilitation centers of KADO, Sharma

Rehabilitation Centre (SRC) and Women Rehabilitation

Centre (WRC) in Hunza continued providing rehabilitation

and skill therapy services to the Persons with Disabilities

during 2016. A project has been funded by the USAID under

the Small Grants Fund.

Project Goal Rehabilitation and Empowerment of the 100 Disabled people

through Capacity Building and product development. Achievements

- Conducted Baseline Survey in Hunza and Identified 100

PWDs for the project. The existing PWDs in the centers

are also included in the training process.

- A project committee is formed for the supervision and monitoring of the progress of the project.

- Procurement and material purchasing for the training trades are done. Master trainers are hired

for each trade.

- The trainings on different trade are already started and

encouraging results are achieved through production of

products.

- Each PWD trainee is being paid a stipend of Rs.1500 per

month.

- Conducted impact evaluation report

- Regular follow ups being made with relevant department to

expedite the building construction process

9. Community Based Business and Permaculture

Project Goal To establish sustainable Permaculture Research and demo farm to learn how to retain which in the local community more of the benefits of local organic fruits and vegetable production – providing better prices for farmers.

Achievements

- Arranged series of mobilization and motivational sessions with the farmers and LSO

representatives about the importance and effectiveness of the permaculture concept.

- Identified 72 apple producers from Upper Hunza for marketing of quality apple prodcuts to

Serena Islamabad and METRO.

- MoU developed with MASO and GRSO and formed 12 fruit producer groups in these LSO

jurisdictions.

- 6200 KG apple collected from the farmers and marketed to Islamabad and sold to Serena and

METRO.

- Agreement has been developed with farmers in Upper Hunza on implementing of permaculture

techniques in the region and getting involve in the training and learning process.

- Trained 35 farmers from Gulmit area in permaculture techniques and involved in practical

demonstration of the concept.

10. Hunza Environmental Committee (HEC)

KADO continued to provide solid waste management services to more than 1,000 beneficiaries in

Central Hunza. The project remained dormant during

2014.

Project Goal

To provide hygiene and healthy environment to the business community through solid waste management social enterprise in Hunza.

- Continued solid waste management service to the community in Hunza with partnership of the

local administration.

- Organized an awareness walk in Hunza to accelerate the importance of environment

development. The local administration, civil society

and the entire community participated in this

activity.

- Installed bins at several locations in different parts

of Hunza and at touristic spots with the support of

LG&RD. A tractor has also added to the service.

- Monthly progress reports shared with local

administration, municipality and bazaar

associations.

- The fees collection and contribution from municipality was increased 1.5 million.

- The adjustment of existing staff in Municipality is in process and request is already submitted to

the agency.

11. KADO Social Business Development Center

Project Goal

Empower of the indigenous people through capacity building,

entrepreneurial interventions and product value chain

development.

Achievements

- The volume of Production of Gems & Jewelry was increased

due to the high demand and visit of Local tourists

- Some of the existing Products are redesigned with the help

and technical support of NCA students.

- Two new products introduced are introduced and emerged

with thread net value addition.(women shale and women bag)

- Participated in exhibitions in Hunza, GB, Islamabad and

Karachi

- A mobile unit of Gemmology and gems identification unit

received from AKRSP. The unit is worth of 1.5 million PKR.

- Increased sale volume up to 30% due to flow of domestic

tourists, demand of jewelry on weddings etc.
