The President ’s Message

We end the year with the sadness of Jean Younge’s passing and begin the New Year with high ambition to accomplish our Kappa goals. I encourage committee chairmen to contact their group members and discuss your progress toward achieving your objectives for this year. We have much to do: recruiting new members, supporting new teachers, awarding grants, and donating to a water for Africa organization, to name a few. May we begin 2015 with renewed energy and dedication to our educational contributions. “Mindful of our sisters’ needing aid and guidance from those leading, helpful may we be!”

Thank you, Jeannette Carofano, President ~Jeannette Carofano, Kappa President 2014-2016 [email protected] 704-814-7197

IN REMEMBRANCE Imogene “Jean” Yongue ~ age 88

KAPPA member since 11/01/1981 ~ 33 years

Imogene “Jean” Yongue was a graduate of Spelman College in Atlanta and a longtime educator. She and her husband, the late William Henry Yongue Jr., earned doctorate degrees from Virginia Tech. They were asked by Duke University officials to be a part of “Behind the Veil,” a series of interviews in the 1990s with African-Americans about the era of Jim Crow laws, which brought about racial segregation until the passage of the Civil Rights Act in the mid 1960s. Imogene Yongue also was a supporter of Johnson C. Smith University and a member of the school’s Myers Society donors. Read more here: http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2014/12/24/5405567/wbtv-charlotte-woman-killed-for.html#storylink=cpy

Her services were held Saturday, January 3, 2014 at the Johnson C. Smith University Chapel. Six KAPPA sisters were able to attend the commemorative services. Jean’s life was remembered and honored through gospel solos, sermon, and the sharing of representatives from some organizations in which she was affiliated. (Thank you for everyone’s flexibility and understanding, as the BUNCO social was canceled to allow all to attend her services.)

The chapter will hold a Ceremony of Remembrance at our World Fellowship meeting on February 14, 2014. Also, in light of her love and consistent participation in the BUNCO fundraising socials, KAPPA will also have a special remembrance of Jean at a future BUNCO date TBD.

December 2014 Meeting Minutes In a Nutshell A  wonderful  fellowship  and  delicious  lunch  was  enjoyed  by  all  in  attendance!

We  followed  the  agenda  through    Pledge,  Prayer,  Thought  of  the  Day,  November  minutes,  Treasurer  Report,

50/50,  Brags,  and  our  guest  Speaker.    Freddie  Powers  from  Keeping  Hope  Alive  shared  stories  and  videos  of  the  organization’s  work.

We  closed  by  packing  up  over  50  shoeboxes  full  of  gifts  for  local  children.

JINGLE  THOSE  BELLS!!!

Kappa  sisters  provided  a  Merry  Christmas  to  50+  children  this  year  with  our  Keeping  Hope  Alive  donation  of  shoeboxes  chock  full  of  school  items,  personal  care  items  and  just  plain  fun  gifts!        There  were  even  leftovers  to  fill  stockings!    Thank  you  all  for  your  very  generous  participation.    If  you  enjoy  “shopping  ahead,”  keep  next  year’s  shoeboxes  in  mind  when  you  catch  a  sale.    Give  a  hearty  shake  of  Santa’s  bells  for  all  your  kindness  and  holiday  spirit.

EXPANDING MEMBERSHIP EXPANDING THE MEMBER EXPERIENCE

Dr. Lyn Babb Schmid, our 2014-2016 International President, shared in her article “The new 3 M’s of membership engagement” that the younger generations are engaged through emotional commitment to the mission and purposes of the organization. Therefore, the new 3 M’s are to make membership Meaningful, Motivational, and Memorable. Each chapter needs to focus on the meeting experience, and giving opportunities to make a difference.
