VENTURA ‘ACES’ ANOTHER TEST--The 23-year old righthander simply known around the clubhouse as ‘Ace’ added to his rookie resume last night with 7.0 shutout innings en route to a 7-1 victory over the Indians to edge Kansas City a step closer to qualifying for fall ball...Yordano Ventura’s effort featured just four hits and four walks while fanning six and upping his mark to 14-10 while hurling KC into a tie for the top Wild Card spot with the A’s and putting three games of distance between them and Seattle...meanwhile, Detroit walked off the White Sox to keep a one-game lead in the Central with a matinee slated today... Ventura received ample support last night as the offense delivered 13 hits, six of which were doubles to tie a season best and in the process delivered all seven runs...the three thru seven spots in the batting order went a combined 10-for-22 with four doubles and all seven runs scored with Lorenzo Cain, Eric Hosmer, Billy Butler, Alex Gordon and Sal Perez each collecting two hits, while Omar Infante’s 2-run double from the #8 spot in the fourth inning actually opened the scoring. FIVE TO PLAY--Tonight pulls the curtain on this 3-game stop in Cleveland and then the Royals will head to the Windy City for a 4-game finish to the regular season against the White Sox...the division leading Tigers faced the ChiSox this afternoon and then will host the Twins for four to closeout their year...as for Wild Card competition, Oakland concludes a series with the Angels today and then will travel to Texas for a 4-game season-ender...the Mariners, three back in the Wild Card, are in Toronto (2) and then home vs. the Angels (3). ‘ACE’ TAKES QUALITY TO NEW LEVEL--Like the statistic or not, Yordano Ventura is having a field day with the “quality start” column by recording his 11th in a row last night, the first Royal hurler to do so since Runelvys Hernandez (September 15, 2002-May 9, 2003)...his 11 straight are already a club rookie record, as are his 22 on the season, two more than Bob Johnson had in 1970...in his last 11 assignments, Ventura has gone 7-2 with a 2.27 ERA, allowing 18 earned runs in 71.1 innings while holding the opposition to a collective .199 batting average (52-for-261)...he’s also allowed only three home runs in that span and none in his last 64.0 innings...he leads all Major League rookie pitchers in ERA (3.07), innings pitched (179.0), quality starts (22), opponents batting average (.235) and ranks second in wins (14) and third in strikeouts (153). AOKI DOKIE--Japanese import, Nori Aoki, has been hotter than a teppanyaki grill since making the move to the #2 spot in the batting order on September 13...in the 10 games he’s played since, Aoki is batting .486 (18-for-37) with an on-base pct. of .537 and an OPS of 1.158...those numbers don’t reflect the hit he picked up in the 10th inning of the suspended game here on Monday night. NED LONGEST TENURED KC SKIPPER--Tonight will be Ned Yost’s 771st game as manager of the Royals, surpassing Royals’ Hall of Famer skipper Dick Howser for the most games managed in franchise history...Yost has a 370-400 ledger as KC’s manager, including a 172-147 (.539) mark in the last two seasons...coupled with his 457 wins as manager in Milwaukee, Yost is currently 74th on the all-time managerial win list with 827 over his 11-year career, three shy of tying Fred Hutchinson’s 830 in a 12-year career as a skipper for 73rd. VENTURA ‘ACES’ ANOTHER TEST--The 23-year old righthander simply known around the clubhouse as ‘Ace’ added to his rookie resume last night with 7.0 shutout innings en route to a 7-1 victory over the Indians to edge Kansas City a step closer to qualifying for fall ball...Yordano Ventura’s effort featured just four hits and four walks while fanning six and upping his mark to 14-10 while hurling KC into a tie for the top Wild Card spot with the A’s and putting three games of distance between them and Seattle...meanwhile, Detroit walked off the White Sox to keep a one-game lead in the Central with a matinee slated today...Ventura received ample support last night as the offense delivered 13 hits, six of which were doubles to tie a season best and in the process delivered all seven runs...the three thru seven spots in the batting order went a combined 10-for-22 with four doubles and all seven runs scored with Lorenzo Cain, Eric Hosmer, Billy Butler, Alex Gordon and Sal Perez each collecting two hits, while Omar Infante’s 2-run double from the #8 spot in the fourth inning actually opened the scoring.

‘ACE’ TAKES QUALITY TO NEW LEVEL--Like the statistic or not, Yordano Ventura is having a field day with the “quality start” column by recording his 11th in a row last night, the first Royal hurler to do so since Runelvys Hernandez (September 15, 2002-May 9, 2003)...his 11 straight are already a club rookie

record, as are his 22 on the season, two more than Bob Johnson had in 1970...in his last 11 assignments, Ventura has gone 7-2 with a 2.27 ERA, allowing 18 earned runs in 71.1 innings while holding the opposition to a collective .199 batting average (52-for-261)...he’s also allowed only three home runs in that span and none in his last 64.0 innings...he leads all Major League rookie pitchers in ERA (3.07), innings pitched (179.0), quality starts (22), opponents batting average (.235) and ranks second in wins (14) and third in strikeouts (153).

Royals Notes - Kansas City Royals @ Cleveland Indians - Wednesday, September 24, 2014

Hitting Notes (Cont.)

This & ThatROAD WARRIORS--The Royals have saved their best work for the road this year, with last night upping the club mark to 44-32 away from ‘The K’, already two wins better than KC accrued at home this year (42-39)...KC’s current road ledger is tied with Baltimore for the fourth highest win total and tied for the second highest road winning pct. (.579) in the American League...Kansas City entered play on July 22 in Chicago with a 26-25 record away from ‘The K’, but has since reeled off an 18-7 ledger in road tilts, the second best mark in the A.L. (Angels are at 20-10), while going 7-1-1 in nine series played after icing this visit to Cleveland with last night’s win...KC has won sets at Chicago, Oakland, Arizona, Minnesota, Texas, New York and Cleveland, while splitting a 2-gamer in Colorado and losing two of three games in Detroit...the 44 road wins to this point are the third most in franchise history and just three wins behind the ‘77 club for second highest success rate away from home and four shy of the team record of 48 in the first World Series year of 1980.

BACK-TO-BACK WITH 86--Last night’s win was KC’s 86th of the year, matching last season’s victory total and marking the first time since 1977 (102) and 1978 (92) that the club won at least 86 games in consecutive seasons...the last two full seasons KC had a winning mark was 1988-89, when the Royals went 84-77 and 92-70, respectively.

DAVIS SETS STRIKEOUT MARK--The breakout year of Wade Davis continued here on Monday night with a scoreless eighth that featured a strikeout of Yan Gomes for his 104th K of the season to establish a Royals’ record for strikeouts by a reliever...he broke the mark of fellow bullpen-mate Greg Holland, set last year, and Jim York, a reliever for KC in 1971...Davis has attained his 104 K’s in 70.0 innings for a 13.4 strikeout to 9-inning ratio, the third best mark in the A.L. (minimum 60.0 innings).

OFFENSE DOUBLES DOWN--The Royals matched a season high with six doubles last night, upping the season total to 277 which is good for a fourth place tie in the A.L...KC has nine players with at least 20 doubles this season, tying a club record...the group of Eric Hosmer (34), Alcides Escobar and Alex Gordon (33 each), Billy Butler (30), Salvador Perez (28), Lorenzo Cain (27), Nori Aoki (22), Omar Infante (21) and Mike Moustakas (20) are the fourth nine-some to hit the 20-double mark joining the 1977, ‘78 and 2008 squads.

KEEPING IT IN THE YARD--The bullpen duo of Wade Davis and Kelvin Herrera have combined for 137.0 homerless innings during the 2014 campaign...Davis has tossed 70.0 frames and allowed only four extra-base hits (all doubles), while Herrera has fired 67.0 innings and given up a dozen extra-base knocks (all doubles)...Davis, Herrera and the Dodgers’ Brandon League are the only three pitchers in the Majors who have worked at least 60.0 innings with no home runs surrendered.

FINAL STOP IN CHICAGO--The Royals will closeout the 162-game slate with a 4-game visit to U.S. Cellular Field starting tomorrow night...KC is 10-5 vs. the ChiSox this year, including a 5-1 mark in Chicago...Kansas City is 12-2 in their last 14 contests in “The Cell.”

SHORT GAME PAYS OFF--The Royals enter tonight second in the American League in infield hits with 155...Kansas City features four in the Top 11 individually in infield knocks with Nori Aoki and Lorenzo Cain tied for third (27), Alcides Escobar tied for ninth (24) and Jarrod Dyson tied for 13th (22).

ALL-CENTRAL FINISH--All five of KC’s remaining games are against A.L. Central brethren, with the club going 36-35 during an up and down intradivisional season...KC turned the page from a 5-15 start within the Central to go 25-11 in its next 36 A.L. Central contests, then fell into a 3-9 slide before winning the last three in a row...Kansas City went just 6-13 vs. the Tigers and is 9-9 against Cleveland, while posting winning marks against the White Sox (10-5 with four to play) and Minnesota (11-8)...for the record, the Royals closed out-of-division work going 17-17 vs. the A.L. East, 18-14 vs. the A.L. Central and had a big league best 15-5 ledger against the National League, of which all but four of those games were against the N.L. West.

RUNNIN’ ROYALS--For the second straight year, Kansas City leads the Majors in stolen bases, upping the season total to 150...the Royals are just three thefts shy of their chart-topping 153 last year...Jarrod Dyson, despite being a part-time player, has swiped 30, 34 and now 36 in his last three seasons, totaling 100 bags in that span which is seventh among all big league thieves...KC is the only big league club with three players with at least 25 thefts, as Dyson is joined by Alcides Escobar (31) and Lorenzo Cain (27), marking the first time for the franchise since U.L. Washington, Willie Wilson and John Wathan each swiped at least 25 bags in 1983.

HOLLY BACK IN FORM--Greg Holland upped his save total to 44 with his perfect ninth inning here on Monday night, showing he’s all the way back from a week off due to triceps tightness...he has allowed only one baserunner in his last 6 outings (a walk) while fanning 11 in 6.0 innings...Greg remains second in the A.L. with his 44 saves and is the first to record back-to-back 40-save seasons for Kansas City since Dan Quisenberry did it in 1983 (45) and ‘84 (44)...Holly has made good of 44 of his 46 tries this year, including 37 of the last 38 and 18 in a row...over a longer haul, Holland has converted 84 of his last 87 attempts (96.6%) since May 30 of last season, the highest percentage among closers with at least 40 opportunities in that span...since that date, Greg has six more saves than any other pitcher in baseball (Craig Kimbrel - 78) and has allowed just 14 earned runs in 111.1 innings for a 1.13 ERA...he recorded his 100th career save on August 8 and since posting his first career save on August 3, 2011 vs. Baltimore, Holland has gone 111-for-121, the best save pct. at 91.7 among closers with at least 100 save opportunities.

FEW KC CHALLENGES OF LATE--Manager Ned Yost has asked for only two replay reviews since August 24, spanning 28 games, the most recent was a week ago tonight when he felt Chicago’s Jose Abreu left the bag at second in the midst of a stolen base and Alcides Escobar was able to hold the tag...just 57 seconds later, NYC agreed with Ned and ran the KC skipper’s record to 22-12 for a 65% success rate...on the flip side, KC’s opponents have gone 16-for-39 (41%) in replay challenges.
