I have been in the process of upgrading the turn signal and brake lights on my 1974 MGB Roadster.

Photo 1: This photo shows the bulbs

which I have used in the rear (amber) turn signal on my MGB. The bulb on

the far left is a standard 1156 single

filament incandescent bulb. It consumes the most electrical power at

about 23 watts. The middle bulb is the first LED upgrade I made and it

consumes the least power of all three

at about 2.4 watts. The bulb on the right is the latest LED upgrade. It is

the brightest of the three and still

consumes much less power than the incandescent bulb at about 6 watts.

The LED’s are much more efficient at producing light because there is very little heat created.

which I have used in my MGB. The bulb on the

far left is a standard 1157 dual filament incandescent bulb. It is used in the rear (red)

Brake/run signal and the front (amber)Turn/run signals on my MGB. It consumes a

maximum of about 23 watts with the brakes

applied. The middle bulb is the first LED upgrade I made to replace the standard 1157

bulb. It consumes a maximum of about 4.8 watts with brakes applied. The bulb on the

right is the latest LED upgrade to the brake/

run bulb. It is the brightest of the three and consumes a maximum of 6 watts with the brakes applied. I got this bulb from a

It's February 2017 and the weather has been like May for most of the month. I even saw an MG out of its cocoon a couple weekends ago. That MG never gets out until March 15th. You just can't keep them garaged in this weather. I heard one of our club members drove from south of Olathe all the way to Atchison, KS just to eat lunch. You just can't keep them

garaged in this weather.

We had several LBCs at the monthly social in February and we drove along with others to Lawrence to look at a race shop which was the Ultimate Man Cave for a vintage race car driver. Can you imagine 136 hp from a 1275 Spridget engine??? This shop was more organized than most kitchens of our club members' wives. Anyway, getting behind the wheel this time of year is rare. I even saw a Morgan on Facebook out getting

Moss Motor Challenge points.

I love February 2017. March might be a b@#*h!!!

Welcome to the First Annual ALL BMC “A” Series Engined Car Run. This will be a fun driving experience through the countryside celebrating these great engines in these

fabulous little British cars.

The “A” series motor is a beautifully simple motor that was used in a variety of cars from 1951 up until 1990. The cars included classic Mini’s, Austin Healey Sprites, MG Midgets, Morris Minors, early Lotus 7’s, and a number of other cars. This event is ONLY for cars that

were born with an A-series engine.

The drive will begin and end at Victoria British in Lenexa, Kansas. The route will take us up to and back from Atchison along some of the nicest driving roads in the local area. The first leg will cover around 60 miles and should take us about an hour. On the return leg we will cover approximately 65 miles and should take

about an hour and a half.

Participating cars need to be capable of travelling at 55-60 MPH as there will be some

freeway travelling.

If you are interested in participating please email [email protected] and include your name, telephone number, and the A-Series car

MIDGET MUMBLINGSMIDGET MUMBLINGSMIDGET MUMBLINGSMIDGET MUMBLINGS By Steve Olson

As we were driving home after the annual MOWOG club event planning meeting (MOWOG is a name you will see cast into various metal parts of your MG standing for MOrris, WOlsley and mG) I was noticing how sweetly the old Midget was running. Even on smooth roads I did note that at least one tire is slightly out of balance or perhaps out of round. No big deal as the tires are old enough that I will probably replace them this Spring even though they have a lot of tread remaining. I also noted that there was just a hint of a handling problem as the car passed over bumps. It must be time to finally place an order to World Wide Auto Parts (www.nosimport.com) for rebuilt rear shocks as the right rear isn't doing much if anything. I guess well over 200,000 miles of service is about all we can expect of those things. The fronts were replaced a few years back and that sure helped the handling. The heater was blowing hot air that toasted my shins and life was good. As traffic thinned I switched on the high beams and noticed they were bright and showing a nice pattern on the road ahead though perhaps the left one could use a bit more pointing to the left. I will adjust that next time I am in the garage. I switched back to the low beams and thought yes a bit more left on the left lamp would be good. But next time I switched on the high beams the world went dark. So I clicked back to the low beams and luckily they worked fine but the highs wouldn't light up. So I tried the high flash and that brought both the high and low beams into action just as it is supposed to. Very curious. Next morning I dug out my manual and located the wiring diagram for my year and noted the high beam wires looked to be blue with a red tracer. Of course my wiring is different a bit because I have added relays for the headlamps to guarantee full voltage to the bulbs and also to reduce the load on the

headlamp switch which I have had to replace a few times. I prayed that the problem was not in the combination turn signal/headlight dimmer switch. I replaced that a short while back when one of the turn signal canceling arms broke off. Cheap plastic only lasted a bit over 40 years. That switch isn't all that expensive but replacing it means dropping the steering column from the dash and that is a fiddly job that requires a solid hour at least and a good deal of words only sailors are supposed to know. I went to the garage and tried the lights and luckily they failed just as the night before. I hate hunting for an intermittent problem. I located the relays mounted on the inner wing and sure enough the one for the highs didn't click when the dip switch asked it to. But wiggling the relays around to feel them click I must have disturbed the wiring because suddenly all worked just like new. Turns out the wiring connectors to the relays are not sealed against water or dirt invasion and it looks like they needed to be. So I sprayed on some contact cleaner and then applied some dielectric grease and closed the bonnet. Another problem solved. Now I just need to watch for those rear shocks that I ordered online to be delivered.

My Life with a Little Car with No My Life with a Little Car with No My Life with a Little Car with No My Life with a Little Car with No

NameNameNameName

By Al Moore

Watching the little green car roll across the

parking lot of the grocery store where I

worked, I remember thinking how elegant it

looked. With its bulging headlights shining in

the semidarkness of a late fall afternoon, its

tiny wipers trying to keep up against the

driving rain, and the fogged up side-curtains

that the driver was trying to keep clear with a

towel that he kept inside for such occasions,

gave the car a mystique that left a lasting

appeal on a 15 year-old bag boy, who vowed

that one day he would own a car like that. It

was an MGTD, and it belonged to a Mr. Flores,

the father of one of the neighborhood girls

who would come into the store with her

mother to shop. When Debbie Flores and her

mother were ready to approach the checkout

line, we would all compete for the chance to

bag up their groceries, and carry them to the

car (sometimes even if there was only a small

bag). One time Mr. Flores came in the MG to

pick up a few things, and I got to see the car

up close with the top down. "What year is

it?", I asked him. "It's a '53...", he said

somewhat smugly, as if I should have known.

"A TD...", he added as he squeezed into the

driver's seat, and drove off. The low rumble

of the engine, and the smell of the exhaust it

left imbedded themselves into my memory,

and convinced me even more that someday,

somehow, I was going to have a TD.

It was the early 60's, and our country was

about to go through some things that would

change our lives forever. Vietnam was a far-

away place we had only begun to hear about,

and President Kennedy was dealing with the

Cuban Missile Crisis. In Houston, we felt that

we would be an early target should the

confrontation with the Russians result in a

shooting war, and everyone was nervous.

Many of the shelves at the grocery store were

empty. A lot of people were stocking up and

heading north, trying to put some distance

between them and possible annihilation. By

the time I made it through college, we had

seen our President murdered in Dallas and

Doctor King murdered in Memphis. In my

senior year of college, I had seen a bit of

bathroom graffiti that said, "They told me that

if I voted for Goldwater the war in Vietnam

would escalate. I did, and it did." And many

of our friends and relatives shipped out to

fight a war in a place we didn't know, for

reasons few of us really understood, and many

thousands lost their lives to. I arrived in

Waupun, Wisconsin on June 5th, 1968 to

begin my first job out of college. It was one

day after Bobby Kennedy was murdered in Los

Angeles.

They say life is what happens while you're

making plans. Well, that childhood dream of

owning an MG would have to wait for a lot of

other things to happen - like earning a living

and raising a family - and would not be

realized for 30-years. One day in '93, while

living in a Chicago suburb, I happened upon

an ad for a '51 MGTD. It was located in

Cicero, IL, not too far from Midway Airport. I

drove over to "take a look", as I explained to

my wife - never expecting to actually buy it -

just to begin the process of finding a car.

Long story short, it was a beautiful car, but

was in need of an engine rebuild, and I had no

idea what that would entail, or the cost. But it

(Continued from page 6)

(Continued on page 8)

Page 8: Kansas City MG Post · April, 2017April, 2017 1st, Spring Tune-up, Rick & Monica M. 4th, Officers’ Meeting 8th, Olpe Chicken Run, Dean & Kim W. 11 th, Social 29 th, BMC ‘A’

was beautiful. I ended up buying the car, and

I know now that I paid too much for it. I just

couldn't get the memory of how that engine

sounded out of my brain, nor the smell of that

exhaust out of my nose. Some of you will

understand.

I was able to get that car running sufficiently

well for little weekend drives, but made sure

to stay within a safe distance of home - just in

case it broke down. It never really did, except

for one time when I broke an axle and had to

have my wife tow me home with a rope tied to

our Toyota. It stayed with me through moves

to Virginia, Texas and Missouri - always

looking good, but running bad. It would sure

attract looks from people as I drove it around

town - especially from young kids, who

probably were reminded of little matchbox

cars they played with. As I drove by, I always

got a thumbs-up and a yell of "nice car!"

I believe Cameron County, Texas is the

poorest county in the United States, and for

the two years I lived in Harlingen I never saw

another MG - or for that matter a classic car of

any brand. People would still stare when I

drove it, but I missed having a connection to

other people who shared the love and

appreciation of British cars. So, it was a great

discovery when Connie and I moved to Kansas

City and found the Kansas City MG Car Club.

Although we haven't been as active as I would

like in the last couple of years, we value the

association with so many of our fellow MG

owners and friends.

There is a hill on Brighton Street that I would

have to downshift all the way to 2nd-gear to

get over - and then barely. So, I decided to

rebuild the engine. I had no idea what this

project was going to cost, but with Bill

Davidson's help, I started ordering the parts,

and on a borrowed engine stand we began to

disassemble, clean, and prepare the engine.

With a couple of machine shops and all the

new engine parts, I intentionally forgot to

keep track of how much this project was

costing, so that I wouldn't have to lie to

Connie when she asked me how much I was

spending. At all the crucial steps, Bill would

come over and assure that everything was

done correctly. Everything on this engine was

safety-wired. One day, after installing the

pistons on the crankshaft and screwing in

most of the bolts that hold the pan in place,

Bill looked up and said, "did we wire those

nuts on the connecting rods?" You know how

that is; you're pretty sure until someone asks.

Now, neither of us is sure, so we take it apart

again. Finally, everything is back together, the

engine is in the car, everything is back on the

engine, and it's time to tackle that hill on

Brighton. That little car attacked that hill with

its new-found strength, gaining the top

without even having to shift out of 4th-gear.

The smile on my face must have stretched

from one ear to the other. That was the first

time since I owned the car that it ran like it's

supposed to.

But now, I had a decision to make. On one

hand, I know I still loved the car, and wanted

to keep it. On the other hand, I felt that it

would never again be in this good of a

condition, and that this might be the time to

sell it and buy an MGB, which I thought would

open up new adventures in driving that I could

not experience in the TD.

So, I put the car on EBay, and a guy from

Syracuse, NY purchased it. I not only had

enough money to buy the MGB, but was able

to bank a lot of the money. I remember the

day the car was picked up as a bitter-sweet

moment. Because it was being picked up on a

flat-bed, I put up the top and installed the side

-curtains. It looked so beautiful, it reminded

me of the first time I saw one. Watching it

being loaded on the truck, then seeing it

disappear down the street, I was left with a

slight emptiness inside of me that went along

with my empty garage space. I thought about

all the years I had spent with that car, and felt

bad that I had never given her a name. As I

cleaned up my workbench and swept my

garage floor, my thoughts went back to that

Houston parking lot on a rainy fall afternoon,

and for a moment I thought I heard that

sound again.

Hopefully everyone has had a good

winter! If you haven’t already, it is time to

get the cars out, get them lubed and tuned,

and head down to Olpe for a good meal with

good friends.

Hope you can make this year’s Olpe

Chicken Run, hosted by the Wichita All British

Car Club. If you haven’t been to one before,

it’s a nice drive from the KC area, a good

chance to meet up with old friends, and a

great opportunity to eat some good fried

chicken. It’ll be a big crowd at a small

restaurant, so you don’t want to be late.

Besides, we’re there to socialize and look at

cars, why not be there early. This year we will

meet at the McDonalds in Gardner about 8:15

am, have a short driver’s meeting and leave

no later than 8:30. Seating is limited at the

Chicken House, so we don’t want to be late.

The route will take us west, south, and

west again to Olpe. A rest stop is planned at

the halfway point, and we plan to arrive in

Olpe at about 11:00 am. That should give us

time to look at cars and socialize a bit before

we before we head in to eat.

As usual, the Wichita club is organizing

the event, and we expect participation from

the Triumph and Jaguar clubs as well.

Hopefully Gary Lezak (or your other favorite

weather guesser) will arrange some nice

spring weather for us, and we will have a nice

drive with minimal roadside tech sessions!

IMPORTANT! Please respond to the

evite from the KCMGCC by March 20th. The

restaurant appreciates an accurate count of

the number of participants. If you happen to

get this evite from KCMGCC, and one from the

Wichita club, or any other club, please only

respond to one. Replies to multiple evites will

generate an inaccurate body count.

that range from 1904 to the 1920’s and the only Mitchell bicy-cle know in existence, these rare beauties are true one of a

2017 MG Coast-to-Coast Adventure

This is not a NAMGBR organized event. Our members Dick Lunney and PJ Lenihan are organ-

izing a drive from the east coast to San Diego. Put a tire in the Atlantic and a tire in Pacific at

the beginning and end of a historic MG road trip of 8 days taking us across the southern Unit-

ed States to NAMGBR’s MG2017. Our tentative plans include using a southern route of sec-

ondary roads and some high speed interstates. Of course MG fans across the nation can join

in anywhere. This plan has a couple short days for touring local sights. These short days also

allow for catch up if anyone was delayed for unscheduled repairs. Our model is the Rally to

Reno in 2011 but with a more southern/southwestern flair.

Basic MG: Oil Filter IssueBasic MG: Oil Filter IssueBasic MG: Oil Filter IssueBasic MG: Oil Filter Issue By John Mangles, All British Car Repair Reprinted from MG Driver with Permission

I came across an interesting problem

that just might affect the oil pressure, or lack of oil pressure in our MGBs. In the past, I’ve ALWAYS used a screw on oil filter that fit a 1998 Volvo V70 with a 2.4l 5 cylinder engine. My reasoning was that it has an Anti-Drain Back Valve that helps to keep the oil in the inverted filter there by helping the oil pressure build faster since it has not drained back into the engine. These filters were a WIX 51311 or equivalent and readily available at the auto parts stores.

I had a customer bring his car in to change the oil and filter. With the work completed, I always start the engine, wait till I see oil pressure then, check for leaks. The problem was, NO OIL PRESSURE! What was going on? I had no leaks and I know it had pressure when I brought it in to do the work!

When I started checking things out, I noticed that there was almost NO oil in the filter! I tried another filter with no luck. Now, I was thinking, what could I have done to this guy’s engine just by changing the oil and filter? I called my supplier, complaining that I had gotten some bad filters and could he get me some from another batch. He did, they didn’t make any difference. I happened to had just bought some NOS parts from a customer and came across an original filter. I noticed that it was a bit taller. I put that filter on and got pressure. Now, to get to the bottom of this!

I called my supplier again, explained what I had found and he started digging.

What he found was, to me, incredibly ridiculous! It seemed that not only WIX but, all of the suppliers had changed the physical dimensions of this particular filter, inside and out, AND had NOT CHANGED THE PART NUMBER!

It is now, just enough shorter that the fill tube of the engine oil filter adaptor fouls on the top of the filter and won’t allow oil to fill it.

I’ve since gone to using a Bosch Part# 72137WS oil filter as it has just about the same specifications as the original Wix filter. Exterior diameter, element type, mounting thread size, gasket diameter, Anti-Drain Back Valve, are all similar. The biggest difference is the height! Other differences were in the burst pressures (Wix 331 psi. vs Bosch 200 psi. -your engine should never build these kinds of pressures at all). And filter Micron Rating (Wix 21 microns vs Bosch 30 microns).

Since this change I’ve had no more problems with oil pressure after an oil / filter service.

For sale, a rare 1949 MGTC exu. This model was built for export and only 494 were manufactured. The odometer shows 14,179 miles on the original engine, transmission and differential. The car will come with what is believed to be an original user’s man-ual and parts book. Also included will be a tool roll with some original type tools, a spare set of original seats that will need reupholstering, original side curtains and replacement fabrics for new side curtains and some spare unused and used parts. The vinyl top, although not original, is in excellent condition. The black paint has a very good shine and the chrome is very good. This TC has a louvered racing style bonnet. The wooden portions of the tub are in excellent condition and the engine runs well. Though not a concours restoration, the car, which is not shown every year has won a second place in class award in the Heart-land Regional MG car show in 2007 and first place in class awards in 2008 and 2011. It was 1st in class in the Kansas City All British Regional Car Show in 2015. Both shows are long time regional shows in the Kansas City area. Overall I estimate the condition of the car as a good #2 car judged by the Hagerty definitions. For further information contact Stew Koesten at 913-269-5954 or [email protected] (7/16 INDEF)

As was mentioned/discussed at MOWOG, Rob Camblin would like to host a Club Member discussion about the Club hosting a National Register Show in the fu-ture, possibly 2018 or 2019. This get together is to determine if there would be enough interest by Club mem-bers to pursue further efforts. If you can’t make the meeting, please email Rob if you would be interested in this helping. Rob’s email is [email protected].

situ…plenty of room.

Photo 5:

The latest LED installed

in the front turn signal.

Photo 6:

This is a close up view of the latest brake LED

(red). Note the lens in the center. It is 60% brighter than the original bulb and consumes only 1/4 of the power.

Photo 7:

This is a close up view

of the LED that

replaces the Type 1157

bulb in the

front turn signal. It has

the same light output (with

the brakes

applied) as the latest turn

signal LED

discussed earlier.

I have seen recommendations that the LED color

should match the color of the lens, i.e. the brake light LED

color should be red. Quite often, the light output for red or

amber LED’s is not as high as the white LED’s. I personally

prefer to use the white LED’s with the significantly higher

light output for most applications.

When the turn signals are upgraded to LED’s, it

will be necessary to replace the standard turn signal

flasher and emergency flasher units with readily available

electronic units due to the vastly reduced power

consumption.

The above upgrades are relatively easy but are

not cheap. I have also upgraded most other bulbs on my

MGB including the console light, instrument lights, backup

lights, side marker lights and license plate lights.
