I’M FINALLY HEARING THAT THE NEW-CONSTRUCTION AND REMODELING INDUSTRIES

are picking up! Subcontractors and suppliers have more work, and some designers can’t

keep their heads above water. That’s the best news I’ve heard in a long time. We’re going to build

on this by showcasing top area design projects from industry pros in this issue with our 2012

Home of the Year winners. From model and custom homes to awards in modern architecture

and building green — plus our new interior design award — you’ll see, as usual, the best our city

has to offer.

As if that weren’t enough excitement for one issue, you’ll also find fun accessories in Tangerine

Tango, Pantone’s 2012 color of the year; Chef Jasper hosting our Cooking School; and Vintage

Edison creator (and my neighbor) Jim Ligon showcasing his electric talent (shown above).

Oh, and did I mention that I’m jumping on the parenthood bandwagon? That’s right: Truman’s

going to be a big brother to a little girl due in May. No names or nursery ideas yet, so if you have

any, I’m all ears.

Here’s to hoping the good news continues throughout the year.

There’s nothing better than getting positive feedback from our industry.

Underscore your home with sturdy floors

that dictate a definite mood.

An ever-expanding marketplace is filled

with flooring options, including casual rough-

hewn planks (shown), slate, granite or marble,

invincible stained concrete, durable ceramic tile,

sustainable bamboo or cork, and economical

linoleum.

Begin at the top, where the ceiling is the

perfect blank canvas. Add tin or mirrored tiles,

natural or boxed beams, plank paneling, a

mural, intricate molding or plaster medallions.

TEXTURE IS THE SECRET WEAPON IN A DESIGN

arsenal routinely utilized to stylize a space. Translation:

texture impacts the senses.

You may not realize it, but without even touching

a cashmere throw, nubby floor covering or hand-

polished embellishments, the highly tactile character

of the room casts a powerful spell. Give it a starring

role, and it will definitely invigorate your space.

Spark an instant design impactby adding one of these

rich textures to your home.

Textured furnishings are made to embrace. It happens every

time you sink into down-filled bedding, a plush cut velvet sofa

or an antique Windsor chair.

Creative CouplingsTraditionally, these interior styles work well together: stucco

with Southwest and Tuscan, knotty pine with Early American,

painted ceramic tile with French Country, and brick and wood

with Traditional.

Each style has its own stamp of texture, but when you dare to

inject a room with contrast, the tension texture provides is

instantly intriguing. Consider a modern loft with an antique French

armoire as a focal point, a formal crystal chandelier hanging over

a primitive wooden table or avant-garde art in a traditionally

furnished living room.

Contemporary interiors celebrate light; traditional spaces are all

about the interplay of light and dark. If contemporary style seems

too sleek or cold, warm it up with a highly textural carpet or

accessories. And don’t be afraid to use bold textures in large

spaces or subtle textures in smaller spaces.

When a space incorporates unexpected textural juxtapositions,

great style emerges.

Walls are the background often defined by color and

accessories. Get creative with a hands-on approach: rag, roll,

sponge, comb, flock, or add molding or a textural 3-D paper.

Page 34: Kansas City Homes & Gardens

IT TAKES ONLY A MOMENT TO LEAVE

your cares at the white picket fence that

borders the property of this well-preserved

bungalow near downtown Overland Park.

Situated on a treed lot on 80th Street,

the house, built in 1910, has the timeless

appearance of being plucked from a vintage

Hollywood sound stage.

This, you think, is a suburban niche carved

out for something special. Indeed, Lauri

Meyers’ little slice of suburbia heaven is a

house that has the endearing personality of

being a comfortable, old friend. Each room

is lovingly appointed, warm and inviting, and

filled with treasures that are nostalgic and

artisan. A former garage was transformed into

a vintage art studio known as Friends of a

Feather. It’s a co-op of sorts, where Meyers

and her mother, Marilyn, who lived in the house

for 18 years, gather women to celebrate life,

friendship and creativity.

MARCH/APRIL 2012 •• 33

Several times a year, Friends of a Feather hosts sales with

handcrafted items, one-of-a-kind finds and what Meyers calls

“things left behind.” There are arts and crafts, handmade clothing,

vintage-inspired home decor, whimsical paper mache sculptures,

montages and collages, and repurposed furniture. Each room

has its own cozy, quirky charm, where an invisible creative thread

weaves a delicious sense of harmony, even though the home’s

interior script is entirely rewritten for each sale.

“There is a core group of six or so vendors who fill the house

for our three-day events, and that rotates, so each sale is truly

unique,” Meyers says. “We essentially flip the house from season

to season, sale to sale. Each one is fresh, new, special.”

That blank canvas — framed, of course, by the home’s classic

bungalow architecture — allows Meyers and friends to create the

unexpected every six weeks or so. Meyers says the Friends of

a Feather sales are like treasure hunts, where items have been

rescued and returned to their original luster or reimagined and

renewed. She and her mother, aunt, sister and niece like to set off

on adventures where they comb small towns seemingly lost in

the shuffle of big-city life for special finds that will be dusted off

and given a second life at Friends of a Feather.

Friends of a Feather also functions as a studio for arts and

crafts classes and is available for intimate events, such as book

clubs and knit groups, bridal and baby showers, and luncheons.

This summer Meyers anticipates offering a craft-oriented mini-

schoolhouse series for kids.

“This house and the concept are lovely opportunities for us to

create, recreate and inspire one another,” Meyers says.

We can’t imagine a more perfect way to feather a nest.

Meyers’ home abounds with treasures during seasonal sales.

Washington, D.C. transplants, Mark, a political consultant and

Lawrence native, and Rosemary, a stay-at-home mom, were

looking for a house that was conducive for their family and three

children: Jackson, 18; Caty, 17, who has a genetic disorder and

is the reason her parents wanted the home to be handicap-

accessible; and Harrison, 9. “We wanted a house that has a lot of

charm, room, good bones, good karma, and since my husband

likes to garden, a yard to play with,”

Rosemary says. Being a part of the

Symphony Designers’ Showhouse

is an added benefit. “To have it done

and done well is just an amazing

thing,” she adds. “The Kansas City

Symphony is a great organization

and a really good way to give back

to the community.”

The Sumps are excited to see

what the local designers come up

with for the tour, but, like any new homeowners, they have a

wish list. “I hope the master bath has a tub so after I get the

kids to bed, I can relax and read a good book,” Rosemary notes.

The whole family is excited to see what the kitchen — the most

important room in their home — looks like after the update since

Mark and Rosemary both are serious cooks (she used to be a

caterer) and plan a traditional family dinner every Sunday evening.

Enjoy the Sumps’ newly remodeled home with them!

EVERY YEAR THE DESIGNERS’ SHOWHOUSE PROVES WHY

it’s the holy grail of design talent and inspiration. This year is no

different. Along with new homeowners Mark and Rosemary Sump,

top-notch local designers will take hold of 34 design spaces within

the home (four of which are outdoor living areas) to transform it into

the most talked-about house in the city.

The three-story Tudor Revival features coursed stone walls

with steps that lead up to the front

door, characteristic of the numerous

historic homes in this community.

It offers an open main level, six

bedrooms, four bathrooms and

5,206 square feet of total space.

One of the most notable features of

the house (and a selling point for the

Sumps) is the handicap access from

the backyard to the main floor and

from the driveway to the lower level.

The house also includes a conservatory, library, “man cave,” wine

storage and workout/game room.

Throughout its 103-year history, this quaint house has been home

to seven previous owners. Originally built in 1909, this home was

designed for Wallace and Beverly Goffe, who enjoyed season

tickets to the Kansas City Philharmonic (now the Kansas City

Symphony) and donated their home at 4410 Warwick Blvd.,

now the Richard J. Stern Ceramics Building, to the Kansas City

Art Institute.

Respecting the Colonial style, this special period home is

appropriately suited in extensive trim and moldings,

marble floors, subway tile and crystal fixtures, but it’s

punctuated with pops of color and modern influences.

The inspired design evolved over time, with home decor

that is more personal than store-bought. Fixtures,

furniture, textiles and art nod to tradition but sparkle with

life. “There’s a non-beige energy that is inspiring every

day as we walk through,” the homeowner says.

A spacious and open main level is the hallmark of the Weston II model,

where all bedrooms, including the master suite, are on the second

floor. Communing and entertaining are easy with a large kitchen island

and breakfast area. Windows spanning the back of the home and

an 8-foot slider bathe the interior in sunlight, shining on the above-

standard crown molding and multiple paint colors.

IT’S A SHADY, SERENE AFTERNOON

in Elaine and Richard Jones’ backyard.

So shady and peaceful, in fact, this park-

like setting is a welcome respite for more

than one critter discovering the benefits of

keeping cool.

“I won’t even go very far under the

deck to water my shade plants where

a good-size black snake resides,” a

cautious Elaine says.

Attending to plantings under the deck

is just one area on this extensive property

that keeps the Shawnee couple active,

rain or shine. Richard acknowledges that

neither he nor Elaine is a master gardener,

but the grounds look pristine. The couple’s

successes have come by trial and error

but always with passion.

“We’ve been married 45 years and

enjoy this hobby together,” Elaine says.

Mornings, when the air is still cool, both

Elaine and Richard diligently tend to the

yard. “I’m the professional dead-header,”

Elaine says, noting that when Richard isn’t

watering and weeding, he can be found in

his vegetable and herb garden.

LEFT...“We had an established garden in St. Louis, but unlike our previous home, this one presentedus with some interesting challenges,” Richardsays. Nine years ago, when they built the house, there was nothing more than a thicket of treesand little else on the acre. “With all of thenative trees and wild shrubs, our original planwas designed to give the yard a woodland feel.”

LEFT & ABOVE... Garden treasures peek in between the lush foliage.“We think our one-of-a-kind finds add a bit of whimsical uniqueness to our garden,” Elaine says.

Since building their house nine years ago, the

grounds have significantly changed from wild

woodland as the couple removed trees. A large

cottonwood tree — one of the largest in the

surrounding area — was spared because of its

anchoring in the garden and wide canopy.

They hired a landscape architect to give them

ideas, which ranged from adding boulders to a

water feature. “We decided against the water

feature but thought a dry creek would be an

attractive addition,” Richard notes.

Meanwhile, they added beds and incorporated

bushels of plants. “I buy what looks healthy and

what I like,” Elaine says. “I think we visited nearly

every nursery in town in order to get just the plants

we wanted,” Richard adds.

With so much shade, the Joneses discovered

the joys of low-light plants that proliferate

throughout the distinctive handcrafted beds,

where hosta, fern, coral bells, lamium, hydrangea,

honeysuckle and red twig dogwoods carpet the

island ground.

Neither Richard nor Elaine claim to be philosophers, but they think thisquote summarizes the theme and personality of their garden:

“One of the most delightful things about a garden is the anticipation it provides.”~ W.E. Johns __ The Passing Show

Page 68: Kansas City Homes & Gardens

66 •• KCHANDG.COM

ABOVE... “Our grandson named the backyard “Pathway to Happiness” because of the flagstone pathway that windsthroughout the yard,” she says. Eventually, it leads to the vegetable patch, where he and other grandchildren

can pick ripe tomatoes, squash, eggplant, onions, peppers and herbs.”

RIGHT... “Richard and I like to entertain,” Elaine says. “Since I like to shop for lovely table settings,it’s fun to decorate with all my finds. I have a table on the deck that seats six, and on

the patio below, I have another wrought iron table that seats eight.”

In contrast to the woodland shade garden,

a second-story wood deck and ground-level

patio are filled with sun. Both display abundant,

colorful plants: knockout roses, clematis, daylilies,

dahlias and annuals. “Every year, the containers on

the deck and patio are different,” Elaine says. “I

have such fun each spring shopping at all the

nurseries. Then, when I get home, I let the creative

juices flow.”

Richard and Elaine aren’t the only ones who

enjoy it all. “Even strangers walking by have

knocked on our door to comment on the

red-headed coleus that grew three feet tall in the

front yard and the New Dawn climbing roses that

blessed us with thousands of blooms in May and

June,” Elaine says.

The couple’s gardening hobby has taken on a

life of its own. They admit it’s a lot of work, but

it’s something they can do together and share

with all who visit. “For both of us, it is also about

hanging out with nature and enjoying the peace

and serenity of the outdoors,” Elaine says. “I get

some of my best ideas when I am digging in

the dirt.”

All Parts That GlitterI tend bar at JJ's Restaurant and have access to lots of materials

there. I also have bartender and server friends all over Kansas

City who save their “trash” for me. These days, I seldom walk out

of a bar or restaurant without empty bottles. I often think as I'm

putting them in my trunk that it would NOT be a good time to

get pulled over. I keep photos of the finished pieces in my glove

compartment just in case: "Really, officer, I'm using all these

empty bottles to make lights!"

How to Own OneI've made stuff for kids and grandmothers and everyone in

between. You can find some in stores, but most of what I do is

custom commissions, including night lights, chandeliers, lighting

for weddings, and installations in bars and restaurants. If you

want something, I'll find the materials and make it. The prices

range from around $150 and up depending on the size of the

light and availability of the stuff needed to make it. My customers

do enjoy the fact that the piece was made specifically for them;

they're not going to walk into a department store and see 20

more exactly like it.

Most MemorableI have the original piece that I made in my room that’s a

sentimental favorite. But my favorite by far is the one I made for

my dad. I flew home with it and surprised him for his birthday. It

was the first Vintage Edison piece he had seen in person, and he

A day trip to Carthage includes stopping in all the local shops

on the square (bottom right), visiting historic Victorian homes like

the Baker house (bottom left), touring the courthouse (top right)

and learning the history on the Precious Moments Chapel (top left).

Get your motor running andhead on down 71 Highway to

this old Route 66 town.By Diana Lambdin-Meyer

I AWOKE TO THE SOUND OF CELTIC MUSIC DRIFTING INTO MY

room accompanied by the aroma of warm soda bread and scones.

But I knew I was someplace special when my arrival in the dining

room was announced by a bagpipe sonata.

I wish I were in Ireland, but almost as good, I was just two hours

south of Kansas City in Carthage, Mo., at the White Rose Bed and

Breakfast. For those who love all things Irish or are looking for a

special place to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, a visit with Jim and Jan

O’Hara, whose roots trace to County Clare and County Sligo,

should do nicely. Much of the decor of their 5,000-square-foot inn

includes family heirlooms and Irish lace and linens. I stayed in the

Dublin Room, which includes a fireplace mantel from a home in

Dublin and a bed that is claimed to have been owned by The

Unsinkable Molly Brown.

Carthage is an unexpectedly enjoyable day trip. A hassle-free

jaunt straight south on Highway 71, Carthage was built on rich

deposits of lead, zinc and marble that, in turn, created a wealthy

population in the late 19th century. Elaborate Victorian architecture

still stands as a testament to when the town had more millionaires

per capita than any other city in the U.S. A walking tour of the

courthouse square makes for a lovely afternoon, filled with a

variety of independently owned shops and cafes.

The window display at Goad’s Antique Mall was enticing enough

that I spent the next hour looking and taking measurements.

If I could have fit that one dresser in the back of my car… But I

had no problem finding room for a couple of bottles of wine and

some San Saba River jams at Annie’s Epicurean Delights & Fine

Wines. The selection of olive oils, seasonings and other goodies

at Annie’s exceeded what many such specialty stores in Kansas

City have to offer.

If you’re looking to enjoy a beautiful spring day outdoors,

spend a few hours at the Precious Moments Park. For nearly

three decades, millions of fans of Sam Butcher’s inspiring little

figurines, cards and ornaments have found their way to this park

on the south side of Carthage. While the chapel and artwork

itself are worth the drive, the serenity of the blooming gardens on

a sunny spring day will leave you inspired to plant a few bulbs of

your own, or at least return to Carthage another time to see what

the seasons bring.

C ulinary trailblazing team Chef JasperMirabile and Somerset Ridge Vineyard &

Winery’s Dennis and Cindy Reynolds powered through asold-out session at Roth Distributing, preparing an astounding sixcourses paired with wine. Chef Jasper recounted his recent return to hisSicilian hometown, a trip he endearingly calls The Cannoli Trail (fittingly also the title of his next cookbook – we can’twait!), and gave a tutorial on making fresh mozzarella with a kit that can be purchased at any Hen House for you tomake at home, too. Somerset brought out its special Cabernet Franc Reserve and Flyboy Red, named after theirbeloved Lt. Col. Arch Tucker, the vineyard’s Vice President of Tasting.

A Family SecretA Family SecretThis six-course Italian feast featured a

secret family recipe, the Scampi alla Livornese, and ended with the Mirabile

family’s signature Cannoli Tartuffo.

This “secret” is out! The Scampi alla Livornese was topped with perfection whenpaired with Somerset’s Riesling, the first ever made in the state of Kansas! Atabout 1-percent residual sugar, this is a wine everyone can agree on. Did we

mention it’s 100-percent made with estate-grown Riesling grapes from Kansas? [ ]

The Menu:

Penne AllAmatriciana3 T extra-virgin olive oil, divided4 oz pancetta or guanciale or unsmoked bacon, cubed1 garlic clovecrushed red pepper

(as much as you’d like but should not be the predominant flavor)½ C onion, very finely chopped 4-5 basil leaves1 large can crushed Italian tomatoes

(not Italian-style but actually from Italy)12 oz penne¾ C freshly grated Pecorino Romano cheese, Parmigiano/Grana,

a combination of both or Chef Jasper’s homemade ricotta

1. In a large skillet, combine oil and red pepper and heat over mediumheat. Add onion, garlic with pancetta/guanciale/bacon. Cover andsauté until crisp, about 6-7 minutes.

2. Add tomatoes and basil. Season with salt and black pepper and simmer uncovered for 40-45 minutes.

3. Cook pasta very al dente; drain, reserving ½ C pasta cooking liquid.Return pasta to same pot.

4. Add sauce and ½ of the grated cheese. Sauté for 2-3 minutes, adding cooking water if too dry. Serve and sprinkle more gratedcheese.

Pollo alla FredericoRecipe courtesy of “Jasper’s Kitchen Cookbook”¼ C olive oil1 fresh, whole, never-frozen chicken6 Jasper’s Italian sausage links1 medium onion, sliced into strips3 green or red bell peppers, sliced into strips1 C wine28 oz Italian tomatoes1 C green peas1 t red pepper flakes½ t dried basil, tarragon, rosemary, thyme3 baking potatoes, quartered1 C mushrooms, slicedsalt and pepper to taste

1. Wash chicken and cut into legs, thighs, breasts and wings. Preheatoven to 450º F.

2. Heat olive oil, add chicken and sausage, and brown for 10 minutes.Add peppers and onions and cook until onions are translucent.

3. Place chicken, onions, peppers and remaining ingredients exceptpotatoes and peas into a large baking dish. Bake 30-45 minutes.

4. Add potatoes and peas and bake another 30 minutes.

The AllAmatriciana comes to life with a sip (orglass) of Flyboy Red, a soft, fruit-forward blend ofpremium red grapes. It’s great for merlot and pinotnoir lovers.

Also try the penne dish with Buffalo Red,Somerset’s premium semi-sweet red wine withcherry and plum flavors. It’s also a great pairingwith KC barbecue.

Deliciously paired with thebrightly colored appetizer platter, this Chardonnay offerslush flavors of tropical fruitswith a long, dry finish.

If you just can’t get enough, scoop up some more apps andsample with Buffalo White, featuring luscious tropical fruitflavors and a long, silky finish.

The Pollo alla Frederico dish received special treatment whenpaired with Cabernet Franc Reserve, a dry red wine madefrom a special selection of Cabernet Franc grapes grown inSomerset’s hillside vineyard. It’s fermented in small lots andaged in new American oak barrels.

A fan favorite, the Cannoli Tartuffo is a sweet treat appropriately pairedwith Avalon, Somerset's first apple wine made with a special blend ofwine, apples from Louisburg Cider Mill and its own brandy. It introducesa rich blend of sweet and tart deliciousness that is a perfect treat for thefall and holidays.

For round two, grab another Tartuffo spoonful and wash it down withTawny Port, Somerset’s rich, caramel-colored Port-style dessert winethat’s aged for several years in oak barrels. It has great smoky, nutty flavors.

½ C heavy cream1 qt vanilla ice cream (Blue Bell)1/8 t real vanilla extract1 drop cinnamon oil

It’s quite a sight to see Chef Jasper make his homemade mozzarella!
