AAs many of you know, my husband and I have

renovated/have been renovating (depending on which

one of us you ask) an old farmhouse west of the city.

We got the place this close to the way we wanted to

ideally live then effectively dropped our efforts to

focus on the land instead. It’s taken three years to

plan and implement our numerous outdoor projects,

including adding on a deck, instating a native tall

grass prairie, digging a vegetable garden (it’s bigger

than our house!), planting an orchard and berry patch,

getting chickens settled in the coop and learning the

fine art of apiculture (beekeeping).

With suffocating heat and humidity this summer

and a feeling of adequate accomplishment, we turned

back to the indoors for the refuge of central air…only

to find that we had left a fine mess of a to-do list that

had never been fully checked off. Nearly every room

in the house was complete except for a few minor

details, like touch-up painting or putting up trim —

mostly things a do-it-yourselfer could get done with a

weekend’s worth of motivation yet we’d procrastinated

years. In our defense, though, before you can complete

one thing, you must complete another. It’s the

domino effect of home remodeling.

Just when you think you’re finally done, something else creeps up on your to-do list.

Domino Remodeling

Before installing baseboard in the kitchen, for

instance, we needed to finally give our old electric

stove the boot. So we bought a professional-grade

stainless steel gas range, but before we could

install it, we had to extend the gas line from the

furnace to the stove. And while we were at it, we

also ran the line to the front of the house to hang

a gas lamp we picked up in New Orleans this winter,

but we capped it because we weren’t ready to tear

out the wall, leaving yet another project for the future.

(See the cycle?)

Despite our recent progress, the to-do list seems to

grow ever longer. There are some upgraded window

and insulation tax breaks to take advantage of this

fall, closets to reorganize, new living room furniture

to arrange, and I guess it’s time to make this

announcement: a nursery to decorate. With a little

bundle of joy coming into our lives, the importance

of crossing off our tasks has increased. We know that

having a baby is a game-changer and that, come

spring, those home remodeling dominos are going

to fall by the wayside when our new “project” —

parenthood — becomes our No. 1 priority.

The Green Living Show Homeis Finally Here!

IIt’s hard to believe that it has been more than a year since

architect Wolfgang Trost contacted us to discuss the

concept of this home. I remember Wolf saying, “When

you build a home with this large of a footprint, you

have a larger responsibility to the environment.” His

thoughtful design has been well-executed by a lot of

skilled labor under the direction of Keith Eymann of

Ambassador Construction and the design direction of

Diana Carter of Di’s Design. The lovely home in the

Sunset Hill neighborhood will be open for touring

October 8-10 and October 15-17.

What can you expect to see? Well, this $2.5 million

home is a tribute to Old World design with a natural stone

and stucco exterior, gorgeous materials that speak to a

previous era, and open spaces that live large for today’s

lifestyle. The home is furnished by local area retailers —

I.O. Metro and Amini’s Galleria handling the lower level

and Picture Perfect Interiors, Scandia Home by Ursula

Terrasi, Seville Home and Leawood Fine Art furnishing

the main level. Under the beautiful façade is where the

green aspects come into play. Wolf has been working hard

for LEED certification, gathering points in every area

from energy efficiency to low-maintenance landscaping.

High design and style with a conscience — this home

has it all.

Buy your tickets and help children in need in Kansas City.

Tickets are available at all area Hen House stores for

$10 in advance or $15 at the door. Remember, 100

percent of the proceeds benefit the Love Fund for

Children, www.lovefundforchildren.org. Your ticket not

only gains you admission to the home, but it is also your

trolley pass from the Country Club Plaza. Park near

Williams-Sonoma and let someone else do the driving to

the site courtesy of Horizon Limousine. Moreover, come

back to the Plaza and enjoy a free small-plate appetizer

at McCormick and Schmick’s during the tour with the

purchase of a lunch or dinner entrée. The ticket basically

pays for itself!

So, make a day of it: tour, lunch, shopping, giving. It’ll

be a great day for a great cause! Oh, and if you fall in love

with the house, buy it — it’s for sale!

Page 32: Kansas City Homes & Gardens

We’ve been telling you about going green since our first dedicated

green issue in December 2004. Six years later, it’s easier than

ever to live an eco-friendly lifestyle, with more new and recycled

products and superior technological systems. But what better way is

there to tell you about sustainability than to show you firsthand?!

KCH&G proudly introduces the Boulevard of Dreams Green Living

Show Home — the first of its kind in the metro. The posh Sunset Hill

residence was developed by former baseball player Joe Carter, now

owner of A HOMErun LLC, designed by architect Wolfgang Trost, built

by Ambassador Construction and decorated by Di’s Design.

What you’ll first notice is that this green home doesn’t look at all

like what many people expect it to. It’s a beautiful Old World estate

filled with gorgeous materials and the best furnishings from local

retailers, including Seville Home, Scandia Home by Ursula Terrasi,

Seasonal Concepts, Amini’s Galleria, Picture Perfect Interiors,

Leawood Fine Art and I.O. Metro.

What makes it green are the many energy-efficient techniques used

during the building process, including 2x6 exterior wall framing, taped

ductwork and a combination of fiberglass batt insulation and rigid

foam insulation. The house’s temperature is controlled by a ground

source heat pump, and the lower level is further warmed by radiant

floor heating. The paint is free from volatile organic compounds

(VOCs), while the cabinets are formaldehyde-free and harvested from

sustainably managed forests.

Outside, much emphasis was placed on water harvesting and

drainage, with beautiful xeriscaping to reduce the amount of grass that

needs to be maintained. While it looks like any other luxury show home,

it’s a green machine behind the scenes!

With its classic midtown location, you can make a day of seeing the

home and enjoying the bustling streetscape of the Country Club Plaza.

As a bonus, on the back of each ticket there is a coupon for a free

small-plate appetizer with the purchase of a lunch or dinner entrée

from McCormick & Schmick’s. So, invite some friends and see for

yourselves what the trend in going green is all about!

A: I see a definite movement toward outdoor entertaining; a

wonderful vine-covered pergola practically creates another room

for your home with European ambiance. Outdoor kitchens with

encircling herb gardens are perfect for people to gather and cook

together. As for trends in cookware, customers are looking for

classic basics with dual functionality. For example, a cast iron

pizza griddle may be used on the stove top, oven or grill.

Q: From what you’ve seen move in and out of your showroomor shop, what are the current trends in fixtures, appliances

and accessories, and where are the trends heading? Q&

A

OCTOBER 2010 •• 37

Louise Myers, Pryde’s Old Westportwww.prydeskitchen.com

A: I see a trend toward cleaner lines and using more natural

green products and materials. Energy Star appliances are

getting more attention as energy prices continue to rise.

Consumers are willing to spend more on higher-quality

products, knowing they will not need to be replaced as

often. Induction cooking is more popular because it’s energy-

efficient, has quick response times, and it’s easy to clean.

Christine Ricketts, Ferguson Enterpriseswww.ferguson.com

A: A trend that I’ve seen lately is bringing your personality and

style into your kitchen — making the design your own. I’ve seen

bright accessories, rich textures and bold colors, even with

appliances. For the future, I see more attention to detail and

having your home really reflect your personal style. I wouldn’t be

surprised if trends that appear on the runway, such as head-to-

toe hues, metallics and Fifties chic, start making their way into

the kitchen soon.

Jennifer Ebert, Nebraska Furniture Martwww.nfm.com

A: Today’s consumer is investing in appliances that are more

aesthetically pleasing, easier to clean and provide convenient

operation. With the kitchen using as much as 30 to 40 percent

of household energy, the future has more energy-efficient

appliances designed to provide quality meals in less time.

More energy-efficient refrigerators, laundry machines, speed

cook ovens and induction cook surface technology will be

sources of savings.

And just like all great parties end up in the kitchen, the house design

started with that room. The incomparable exterior surroundings

became the framework for an ingenious design solution: a perfectly

round and rustic, come-as-you-are kitchen to accommodate a crowd,

a bevy of cooks or solitary contemplation.

“The kitchen has such a fluid motion, and besides that, it generates

really interesting conversation,” notes Wendlandt, who says the

kitchen’s circular shape is itself a strong design element.

The room’s punctuation mark is the arc of south-facing windows

that flood the space with natural light.

The kitchen’s oak beams, Kansas limestone and custom-designed

oak cabinetry were chosen to echo the rest of the home’s Arts and

Crafts style. Earthy granite and porcelain tile is juxtaposed against

the stainless steel KitchenAid appliances and Viking stove. A large

butcher block that deFlon sketched out for a craftsman serves as an

additional prep area. “This kitchen works the way we live,” deFlon

says. “We have daughters, grandkids and other family who live

nearby, so this is a gathering room.”

Bruce says the round kitchen helped bring the scale of the house

down and address the deFlons’ concern of including everyone in the

space, whether it’s for conversation at the breakfast bar, watching

weather from the curved bank of windows or preparing a meal.

“No one is sequestered when they’re in this kitchen. Plus, it’s an

easy-access hub from other parts of the home,” Wendlandt explains.

DeFlon and Wendlandt agree the kitchen-as-muse was the perfect

recipe for the rest of the home to fall into place. “The entire home

achieved our design objectives. And it all started in the kitchen, which

complements our informal lifestyle,” deFlon says.

What happens when an architect consults another architect on his

personal home design?

A beautiful blending of philosophies and an unflinching attention

to quality and detail become the

foundation of an inspired home.

So when Rick deFlon hired

Bruce Wendlandt to execute his and

wife Linda’s dream home, it was

a shared vision of capitalizing on

the unfettered views of 40 acres

of Missouri countryside east of

Liberty.

DeFlon was involved with a job

that was occupying most of his

time; he had admired Wendlandt’s work and thought he would be

the peer to take his three-year design from blueprint to fruition. “We

didn’t have to spend valuable time educating each other on the

process,” deFlon says.

The modified timber frame home’s definitive rustic appeal is

similar to an old stone farmhouse with a couple of wings added on.

Leslie and Chuck Erickson of Fairway hired Matthew Hufft, Jonathan

Tramba and Kimball Hales of the acclaimed Hufft Projects — known

for strikingly innovative and enduring design — to build their

new home that included a timeless kitchen that would serve as a

welcoming arena for entertaining family and friends.

“We wanted a kitchen that would pull off the feeling of a great

room, with living and dining in one space,” says Leslie, who wanted

to incorporate products and materials from her family’s business,

Carthage Marble Corporation.

The architects delivered a high-style kitchen totaling almost

500 square feet that not only makes a delicious statement but also

functions as a piece of art. An 18-foot-long island of Calcutta Gold

splashed with gray veins reads as a monolithic block with book-

matched slabs that add to the piece’s visual intrigue and anchors the

room with a compelling focal point.

“There’s really nothing flashy about this modern kitchen,” Hufft

says. “The custom cabinets are simple and minimalistic, and the

soothing light design was planned to target different activities.”

The strategic, artificial lighting includes canned fixtures to highlight

the back walls of 3x6 white subway tiles, cove accent lights to wash

the walls for nighttime entertaining and decorative CFL lighting

suspended over the island to soften the space.

A Kohler trough sink in the island gives Leslie, the cook in the

house, an efficient space to prep meals. Crate and Barrel stools are in

harmony with the room’s aesthetically clean lines and cozy up to the

stark white high-gloss laminate kick

area. Honed Jura Gray limestone

countertops combine with the

monochromatic design theme and,

along with the sleek exhaust hood and

gas range, frame the kitchen’s back

wall, bookended by the pantry and

ovens on one side and the refrigerator

on the other.

An aged sycamore in the Ericksons’

backyard was salvaged and milled into

planks, air-dried for six months and

then fabricated by Hufft Projects’

MAKE Studios into a stunning table with a custom steel base.

The Ericksons’ modern interpretation of a living, dining and

entertaining space personifies the “family and friends first” attitude,

with calculated function meeting spectacular form.

Pam Fike’s and Joe Walker’s West Plaza home, built in 1916 by

Canadian architect Victor Jacques Dafoe, has interesting design

variations on the classic Arts and Crafts style. So when the couple

was ready to design an addition to increase the kitchen’s size

and make it a seamless entertaining area with the living room,

they chose to punctuate some of the home’s Asian influences.

Frequent entertainers, Fike and Walker also wanted to capitalize

on the seductive view of the backyard’s immaculate landscaping and

natural light.

Perry Quick, LEED AP, Novus Architecture was hired to execute

Fike’s specific wishes —

scrapping the dysfunctional

8x8 U-shaped kitchen in

favor of an eat-in kitchen

and creating an adjoining

great room with a floor-to-

ceiling stone fireplace.

“The original space was

congested and cramped,”

Quick says. “Pam wanted to

drench the space in light and

have a functional room.

Part of that exercise, in addition to removing two load-bearing walls,

was to vault the additional space with a 13-foot ceiling.”

Fike prefers to have natural light coming in from at least three parts

of the room to help guests feel part of the outdoor vista. “I took

special care to design an outside-in feeling,” she notes.

Quick added French casement windows above the deep black

granite sink, which help frame the backyard’s picture-perfect expanse.

The island is topped with funky, earthy green Brazilian granite called

Vitoria Regia that’s distinctively marked by a swirling pattern, while

recessed lighting and red blown-glass pendant lights pop against the

crisp green-and-black color scheme. Natural maple Shaker cabinets

were custom-made by an Amish craftsman.

The backsplash tile is gloss and matte interlocking mix tile called

Dirty Martini that Fike reconfigured to accommodate the kitchen’s

Asian nuances. “I chose to apply the tile vertically and not cut the top

of the tile. This creates the visual of bamboo,” she explains.

Fike’s eclectic style, including musical instruments and other

souvenirs from the couple’s world travels, are housed in a custom,

lighted wall hutch that faces the great room. A separate bar area

between the kitchen and great room is equipped for cocktail hour.

The thoughtfully enlarged kitchen and great room express a

beautiful merger between Arts and Crafts and an Asian motif.

The Fitzgerald family’s Overland Park jewel-box-sized kitchen was

in desperate need of user-friendly storage, functional cooking and

prep areas, a generous dose of efficiency and a crisp, streamlined

personality. Kathleen Ramsey, ASID, was hired to give the 300-

square-foot space — including an eat-in area — an overhaul without

altering the diminutive room’s footprint. “My client wanted to lighten

and brighten the feeling of the kitchen, too,” Ramsey says. “I came up

with overhead recessed, task lighting and classic pendant lighting

solutions to help illuminate the room.”

Ramsey says the new kitchen’s biggest visual impact came when

the soffits were eliminated and new cabinets extending to the ceiling

opened up the room, giving it a sense of airiness. “In addition, the

frosted glass on the cabinet doors create an illusion of more space

while keeping the homeowner’s dishes and kitchen equipment hidden,”

Ramsey says.

Classic 3x6 subway glass backsplash tiles instantly updated the

small kitchen, another detail that delivers a seamless design element.

The soft meadow-inspired Sherwin-Williams Rainwashed color

complements the room’s understated cool-as-a-cucumber palette and

helps to enlarge the space. Gleaming Black Pearl granite gives a

reflective and dramatic punch to the kitchen as black-brushed nickel

pulls and stainless steel appliances are stylish counterpoints to the

room’s overall patina.

Existing caramel Pergo floors were kept, and tailored valances were

added to the large patio door and window above the deep, double

stainless steel sink. An Energy Star microwave installed above

the two-compartment electric

range frees up valuable

countertop real estate for

meal preparation and primary

work zones.

The kitchen achieved its

space-discovery objective,

using the original footprint

as its jumping-off place

for the room’s design. It’s

now a modern-day kitchen

with big-style soul and

working class.

CCabinets ordered online or purchased in store from

major manufacturers are made in specific sizes,

which can be problematic for some homeowners who

have odd-shaped rooms or out-of-the-box ideas.

“You have to make them fit into your existing space,

which never quite works,” says Eric Wilson, owner of

Wilson-Built Cabinets in Wellsville, Kan. “Then you

end up settling for something you didn’t want.”

To get what you’re after, consider hiring a local

artisan woodworker. “At a custom cabinet shop, we

have artisans and craftsmen creating products that

are truly one-of-a-kind and specially built for the

customer,” says Bob Gillpatrick, owner of Gillpatrick

Woodworks in Louisburg, Kan. “They don’t want to

go in a neighbor’s house and see the same style,

Choosing Custom

design and finish. They want to see something unique

and personal.”

Custom cabinets can be contemporary, traditional

or eclectic. There are endless combinations of wood

species, stain colors and hardware to create that one-

of-a-kind look. Woods such as cherry, maple or alder

paired with a darker red or brown stain are popular. A

clean look of simple Mission or Shaker cabinets

paired with square or recessed panels is also in style.

But, Gillpatrick says, the biggest trend in custom

work is that there is no trend.

“I’ve done a complete kitchen out of Zebrawood

veneer, which is usually used as an accent wood.

But the homeowner loved Zebrawood, so we custom-

Page 52: Kansas City Homes & Gardens

matched the veneers throughout the

kitchen,” he recalls.

There are also a wide variety of quality

levels and pricing in cabinets.

“Just because it is custom doesn’t mean

it is better,” Gillpatrick says. “Do research

on the shop you are looking at and find

out what their capabilities are.” Ask the

following questions: How much of your

work is new construction work, and how

much is remodeling? Do your cabinets

match any quality standards? How are

your cabinets constructed?

One of the best ways to qualify a

cabinetmaker is to see their prior work.

“If you are building a truly quality

product that is worth what you are

charging, then you should have a good

bank of customers who would be more

than willing to show off their homes,”

explains Damian Altenhofen, owner of

Altenhofen Cabinets in Linwood, Kan. “If

the cabinetmaker doesn’t want you to, that

should raise a red flag.”

While commercial construction has

specific building standards, residential does

not. The Architectural Woodwork Institute,

a trade association for woodworkers,

specifies three levels of quality: economy,

custom and premium. “Most residential

cabinets are not built to an economy grade.

A custom grade means it has a well-built

box and door,” Altenhofen says.

What to Look ForThere are three main types of cabinets:

frameless, face frame with overlay, and

face frame with inset doors. Frameless is a

standard European style, with no wood face

frame and usually a seamless, unbroken

appearance. Face frame with overlay has a

hardwood frame and a door that hinges

on the face and covers the frame. Inset

doors on face frames sit within the cabinet

opening, and the hinges are hidden.

“The most common type is face frame

with overlay, but in my opinion, this is

inferior to the other two,” Gillpatrick says.

Because the hardware mounts to the back

of the cabinet and directly to the face

frame, it creates points of failure.

“A lot of people are familiar with

drawers falling over time and door hinges

that become loose. Those things are a lot

less apt to happen when using a frameless

type of construction,” Gillpatrick says.

Good quality hinges and drawer guides

are also important. “You’ll open a cabinet

door or pull out a drawer a million times,

so get quality hardware. You’ll notice

that quality lasting for years to come,”

Wilson adds.

Another thing to ask about is if the

cabinet shop prefinishes cabinets prior to

installation so that there is no mess or

smell from finishing on-site at your home.

“We apply the stain and top coats in our

shop in a controlled environment and also

prestain our raised panels before the doors

are assembled to prevent an unfinished

line around the panel of the door,”

Gillpatrick says.

The ProcessThe typical process for custom cabinets

involves an initial consultation, cabinet

design, materials selection and ordering,

cabinet construction and finishing, and

installation. The time involved varies on

the size and complexity of the project.

“Homeowners don’t realize that they

are able to use their kitchen during most of

the process and are only down three to

four days for the actual installation,”

Wilson says.

Working with a local cabinet shop also

means close interaction between the

homeowner and the maker.

“It’s a huge advantage that there is a

one-on-one relationship between us and

the homeowner. We work together through

the entire process,” Wilson says.

AAs a wine guy, I pay special attention to advances in

home appliances such as wine refrigerators and wine

cabinets. Sales for these appliances have increased as

a growing number of Americans drink more vino.

Although walk-in cellars are ideal, many wine

enthusiasts don’t have the space, money or desire to

install one in their home. Wine refrigerators and

cabinets are the perfect solution to fill the need for

convenience and storage.

Wine RefrigeratorsIt is important to understand that wine refrigerators

and food refrigerators are not the same. Food

refrigerators tend to vibrate, which can shake up

sediment in the wine and loosen the cork, allowing

air into the bottle. Neither of these scenarios is

good. Regular refrigerators also have low humidity,

which can dry out the cork and, once again, allow air

into the bottle and destroy the wine.

Refrigerators designed for food are also simply too

cold. If wine is stored at 35°F (the average fridge

temperature), its aging is damaged. Additionally,

typical kitchen refrigerators are opened and closed

often, and the temperature continually fluctuates,

which is not good for wine. (Note: Never drink a

wine directly out of a food refrigerator; 35°F is way

too cold. It is best to let these cold wines sit to

decrease in temperature so the true fruits in the wine

can be enjoyed.)

Page 58: Kansas City Homes & Gardens

Wine refrigerators are designed to chill

wine to the perfect serving temperature. A

basic wine refrigerator is fine for keeping

bottles you plan to drink within a year or

two. The temperature and humidity can be

monitored by using a special gauge inside

the fridge. The temperature can be set

between 45°F and 65°F, depending on the

wines being chilled. Wine refrigerators

maintain the proper temperature for

wine without the constant opening and

closing that can result in temperature

fluctuations. Different styles of wine

require different temperatures, so look

for wine refrigerators with multiple

temperature zones.

Wine CabinetsWine cabinets are designed to store wine for

a much longer period of time than a wine

refrigerator. A number of factors can cause

wine to “go bad” or turn during the aging

process. Because wine can be a significant

investment, it’s important to properly store

bottles to avoid light, extreme temperature

(heat or cold), vibration, excessive or not

enough humidity, and dried corks (allows

oxygen to leak into the bottle).

The main purpose of a wine cabinet

is not to just have bottles of wine on

hand for consumption but to protect

them. It also makes an ideal long-term

storage solution because it holds an ideal

climate like a cellar. To enjoy wine later,

you want to provide conditions that

improve the likelihood the wine will be

better over time.

To determine the right size of cabinet,

a good rule of thumb is to think about

how much space you believe you need —

then double it, since your collection is

likely to grow. If you just need a cooler for

chilling wines, consider how much you

consume on a monthly basis. For those

who entertain frequently, consider adding

space to hold the wine stock needed.

Other Storage ConsiderationsAlarms — If wine is an investment,

some units have alarms that will sound if

the temperature or humidity levels are at

unacceptable ranges.

Interior — The best units have an

aluminum interior, which conducts cold

and heat much better than the plastic

used in less-expensive models. Look for

a textured, pebbled lining, which helps

maintain ideal humidity.

Shelving — Basic wine refrigerators

tend to have fixed chrome-wire shelves;

higher-end models use sturdier wood racks

or wood-framed wire grids. Always think

convenience: Is the shelving adjustable?

Are you able to remove bottles easily? Are

you able to see wine labels?

Vibration — Shaking is detrimental

to wine over time, so look for stabilizing

solutions such as compressors mounted on

rubber blocks and coated racks that grip

the bottles.

Wine Suggestions for FallAuntsfield Sauvignon Blanc

(New Zealand). This wine is perfect for

the patio. The style is aimed toward

texture, complexity and length, balancing

the typical Marlborough fruit spectrum

and aromatics with richness and mouth

feel.

Filus Malbec (Argentina). The nose

is intense and complex with the ideal

balance of fruit, oak and structure. Plum

and blackberry fruits combine with toasty

notes and sweet tannins, providing a long

and persistent finish.

Pingus Psi (Spain). Need something a

little nicer? Add a Pingus wine. This

When his empty-nester father moved to a new home in Westwood,

Bryce Wittenborn of R3 Home Renovation got to work on a whole-

house renovation, including this clean-lined modern bathroom.

The custom-built cabinet is a birch-plywood construction and

its top is made from ipe (pronounced e-pay), a tropical ironwood.

“It’s one of the hardest, nonporous woods you can find,”

Wittenborn says. “It’s great for wet conditions and also has a

gorgeous red tint.”

The vanity features built-in magazine racks, toilet-roll holder

and even a cup holder so the homeowner can have his coffee at

hand while he shaves. The chrome faucet and basin suit the

bathroom’s contemporary feel, but Wittenborn warns that its shiny

finish may not be right for everyone. “It looks great but is pretty

high-maintenance,” he says. “If you don’t want to clean every day,

a brushed metal would be a better choice.”

KCHGHOME . INTERIOR . OUTDOOR . LIFESTYLE&&

Space is at a premium in this three-quarter bathroom, created by John

and Gina Meyer of J.E. Meyer Construction Co. in the eaves of their

daughter’s Waldo home. The odd angles and sloping ceilings made it

unsuitable for a living area but just right for a bijou second-floor bath.

Although the vanity cabinet had to be custom-designed to

accommodate the out-of-square walls, its small size meant Meyer

could stay within budget by using marble off-cuts for the top and

backsplash. “It was our daughter’s idea to cut the mirror and backsplash

with a flowing organic line,” Gina says.

The homeowner herself, visual artist Jenny Meyer-McCall, painted the

built-in drawers to give a vintage cottage feel. The faux finish she used on

the walls not only mimics the original plaster seen elsewhere in the house,

its lustrous sheen also helps the room seem lighter and more spacious.

BATHS USED TO BE THE SMALLEST ROOMS IN THE HOUSE,

a place you were in and out of in a rush rather than somewhere you’d

escape to. They were utilitarian, with no flourishes or luxuries (unless

you count the rubber ducky). Today is a different story, with many

expansions, inventions and amenities, from his-and-hers vanities,

built-in cupholders and accent tile that steals the show. Here are five

that speak to a new era of design.

With its calming sand-and-surf hues and five-

foot jetted tub, this bathroom is the perfect

place for the homeowners to bubble their

troubles away.

“The clients are big Jimmy Buffett fans, so

we incorporated a bit of Key West style by using

beachy colors,” says Allen Harris of ALH Home

Renovations, who worked with interior designer

Lisa Davis to achieve the laid-back look.

The green glass and marble tile used in the

border around the bathroom and in the shelved

niche above the tub was the starting point for

the bathroom’s design. Its distinctive look (and

high-end price tag) means it works well as an

accent, providing visual impact as a backsplash

above the custom-built glazed maple vanity

and standing out from the Portofino marble

countertop and beige porcelain field tile used on

the bath surround and floor. “There are a lot of

really gorgeous glass tiles on the market now.

The challenge is that it’s pretty expensive, but

you can balance that out with a less expensive

field tile,” Harris says.

A column of that same luxury tile supports

the brushed-nickel rain shower and stretches all

the way to the ceiling, emphasizing its lofty

height. “We’re seeing a lot more openness in

bathroom design today,” says Harris, who

raised the ceiling from its original eight to 11

feet to make it feel more spacious. “We wanted

to accentuate that new height,” Davis adds.

“That’s why we have both the box-out of green

tiles in the shower and the brick-shaped field

tiles running vertically up the walls.”

Other key elements aiding the room’s open

and airy feeling include the European-style glass

shower walls and the zero-threshold shower,

which gives the appearance of uninterrupted

floor space.

Though the original plan was to use an Old

World-style chandelier over the tub, the free-

formed pendant lighting fixture caught the

homeowner’s eye in a local stained glass shop.

“It reminded her of a jellyfish, so it works well

with the seaside theme,” Davis says.

“We were able to expand the size of the shower by a good 10-12

inches in one direction and eight to 10 inches in the other direction,

and that meant we could put in some other fun upgrades like a

rainshower,” she adds.

Despite all the modern conveniences and luxuries, the room retains a

somewhat rustic feel due largely to the natural stone tiles used. “It’s

unbelievable some of the fantastic tiles that came out at this year’s

Kitchen and Bath Industry Show __ tiles that create dimension,

movement and lots of rough, natural textures,” Vogler says. The room

showcases the trend with slate tiles used on the walls and as the floor field

tiles and a river rock in the shower base. Both are juxtaposed beautifully

by the red onyx used in the border and as the background in the arched

niche. “The red onyx is sort of the jewel of the room,” Vogler says. “We

wanted that something that really sparkled.”

When the homeowner decided to renovate the master bath in this

fairly newly built Olathe home, the purpose wasn’t just to update the

look but to create an entirely new atmosphere. “The client wanted to

create a spa feel — not necessarily the look of a spa but just something

that felt tranquil,” says Deb Vogler of Comfort by Design. “She’s a

high-energy and super-busy real estate agent, and she just really looks

forward to someplace to escape to at night.”

Because Vogler had worked with her on previous projects, she had

a good idea of the client’s taste. “I’d say we ended up using at least

half of the ideas I brought to our initial meeting,” Vogler says.

The makeover included ripping out an old L-shaped vanity and

replacing it with two separate his-and-hers vanities, which were

customized with granite tops and bronze vessel sinks from ready-made

dressers. Repurposing furniture is one of Vogler’s favorite ways to

create a unique look, and it’s a trend she’s seeing increase. In this

case, the effect isn’t only aesthetically pleasing, it’s practical too. “The

carpenter was able to reconfigure the dressers so almost all of the

drawer space is still functional. The client actually has more storage

space than she did with the bulky old vanity,” Vogler notes.

Though it didn’t increase the actual footprint of the room, the

renovation did result in a more spacious bathroom. Replacing the old

garden tub with one that had a slimmer surround and positioning it

efficiently afforded more floor space.

OCTOBER 2010 •• 81

This contemporary-style bathroom could be something from a sleek

boutique hotel, which is to be expected given that the homeowners

based their design wish list partly on features they’d admired in the

bathrooms of high-end hotels they’d stayed in.

What is more of a surprise is that the room is actually the master

bath of a Spanish Mission-style home on a well-established street just

off Ward Parkway. “The clients have a lot of contemporary elements

throughout their home, so this really works,” says Elizabeth Goltz of

Orion Design. “I think a lot of times the master bath can be a bit of an

escape from the rest of the home, but we did want it to blend.”

She achieved this blend by

using golden limestone flooring,

a color-through porcelain wall

tile and a quartz-topped cherry

wood vanity that reflects the

warm, natural colors of Mission

style. She also designed the

arched recess behind the vanity

to echo the arches found

throughout the house.

Centered on the back wall of the bathroom, the vanity is the first thing

seen when standing in the French doors off the master bedroom. The

slab-door cabinet was from stock, and the company that produced it

provided a matching wood panel, which was cut to size for the bath panel.

Though it’s still a modest-sized bathroom by today’s standards, the

renovation did involve enlarging the original bathroom by knocking

through four adjacent closets from the master bedroom and guest

room. “It was previously a very small space, with just a corner shower

and fairly small vanity,” Goltz notes.

The extra space allowed for many of the features the clients wanted,

like a separate water closet with low-profile toilet and a deck on the

side of the tub so the clients could have a place to put snacks and a

drink while they relax in the bath.

Goltz also included other practical but unique touches, like a close-

For more than six decades, home builders throughout themetropolitan Kansas City area have shown their commitmentto building a better community by offering a wealth of housingchoices in the places where we work, live and play andthis fall the tradition continues.

There is nothing that compares to buying a new home. From the moment you step into the home of your dreams, your head will be filled with all of the memories you knowyou will build in the years to come.

Get ready to turn your dream into a reality by makingplans to attend this year's Parade of Homes, beginningon October 2 and continuing through October 17.Homes are open daily from 11 am until 6pm.

body, rather than being propelled from a small outlet

in the wall. Some popular models emit water from

a panel or showerhead installed directly into the

ceiling. The heads are larger than what you may be

used to for full-body coverage.

Body sprays: Why have just one source of water

when you can have many massaging you from

different directions? Multiple-outlet shower systems

are hugely in demand right now, says Charlie

Dorfman of Dorfman Plumbing Supply. Eco-minded

homeowners concerned about extra water usage

can take comfort in a simple point, he says: If

more water can spray on the body at once to

wash off shampoo and suds, showers can be shorter

TTrue luxury-seekers know the extravagances of a

modern bath. Here are 10 that will turn your bath

truly deluxe.

Radiant floors: Rick Forner of Forner-LaVoy

Builders says his clients are increasingly requesting

heated floors to accompany their bathroom layouts.

It requires a process of installing electric wires or

tubes of hot water underneath tile that radiate heat

up through the floor, which means you can walk on

it sans slippers and not freeze your toes off.

Rain showerhead: Homeowners who frequent

fine hotels know that the most relaxing part of some

suites is the shower. A rain showerhead allows

soothing water to fall down gently onto the head and

__ and you can give your massage therapist

a break.

Towel warmer: After your hot shower,

you don’t want to dry off with a room-

temperature towel. Post-shower comfort

can come from a heated towel bar or a

different arrangement, like a warming

drawer. “We’ve actually taken warming

drawers that you would typically put in

a kitchen into a master bath,” Forner

says. Approaching the colder months of

the year, the devices seem all the more

desirable.

TV in mirror: Catching the news or

a favorite sitcom can now be part of

your primping routine. Many varieties of

in-mirror TVs have hit the market, making

use of increasingly ubiquitous LCD

technology. Some units remain visible at

all times, though more advanced versions

disappear to reveal a mirror surface when

not in use. Séura sells both styles, along

with waterproof TVs framed in custom

colors to hang on any wall.

Bubble tub: Jet-equipped bathtubs

might have been the standard of luxury

previously, but air-bubble tubs are moving

into the market, offering the ultimate in

relaxation. Rather than targeting sore

muscles and back pain with jets, you get a

gentler, quieter experience with bubbling

air. Plus, you can add products like bubbles

that you can’t use with jetted models.

Drink stations: Today’s time-pressed

homeowner knows that sitting down for

breakfast can be, unfortunately, a thing

of the past. Enter the in-bathroom coffee

bar, beverage center or icebox. “We’ve

installed built-in coffee makers into the

walls,” Forner says. “If there’s a water

pipe right next to it, all you have to do is

hit a button and go.” You can even skip the

trip to Starbucks and save more time.

No-touch faucet: Keep a cleaner sink

and give off a thoroughly modern vibe

with an electronic or infrared-sensor,

hands-free faucet. Kristeen Armstrong-

Scott, CKD, of Armstrong Kitchens points

out that many clients today are interested

in the concept, which proves surprisingly

affordable. Some units even run on

battery power. Armstrong-Scott generally

likes models like the Delta Touch 20

system, which uses four C batteries

snapped into a Velcro-seal unit that

attaches under the sink. “I notice that the

Touch 20 is smart enough to turn itself

off after four minutes of unintended

operation,” she adds. “That should keep

[my cat] from brushing against the faucet

and flooding the room.”

In-closet washer and dryer: Your

closet is where your clothes should start

and end their day. Instead of lugging

laundry down stairwells or across the

house, homeowners are now incorporating

stacked washer and dryer units into their

master bathroom closets. Who doesn’t

want less work and more convenience? Of

course, if you live with more than your

spouse, you may still have to do other

people’s laundry. Since tinier closet units

cater to fewer garments than full-size

versions, you will use them to accompany

— not replace — your primary set.

Bidet: For the ultimate in luxury — and

perhaps a little European extravagance —

try a bidet toilet seat. “The most fully

equipped models are heated and offer

temperature- and pressure-controlled

water out of either the front or rear wand,”

Dorfman explains of his models, which

cost $2,000 to $2,400 before discounts.

“The seat also has a built-in warm-air

dryer as well as a carbon filter with

exhaust to remove odors from the bowl.”

en years ago, Doug and Cheryl Linder called David Dussair,

architect and builder of Design Build Team (DBT) — who also originally

built their contemporary 26-year-old home — to update their interiors,

including a hot tub room addition that overlooks the rustic backyard. Last

November, Doug finally got the space he’d always wanted: a sauna haus.

Originally slated to attach to the home, the modern Scandinavian-inspired

sauna haus (Doug’s ancestors are from Sweden) is a stand-alone building in a

part of the uninhabited timber just a few stepping stones behind the Linders’

home. Design Build Team hand dug level ground for a solid foundation for the

modern-style cabin. “It’s very much a retreat instead of it being a part of the

home,” Doug says. “It’s separate and charming and offers peacefulness.”

Because Doug is 6-foot, 5-inches tall, he wanted a space with high ceilings,

as well as unobstructed views of nature, a sitting room to relax and read, and

a separate space for a sauna and shower. “I like a hot sauna and cold shower to

get the juices going,” he says.

Dussair fulfilled that wish list.

OUTDOOR retreat

Illustrating functional architecture at its

best, the doweled wooden steps leading

into the sauna haus were designed to

help snow/ice melt faster, reducing the

risk of slipping. Once inside, a nine-

foot-tall rough fir plywood ceiling —

typically an exterior finish — with skylight

meets triple-hung windows, allowing

unobstructed views and natural light to

flood in. White pine walls exude a feeling

of warmth as do the radiant-heated

cork floors.

A sliding barn door, just one of

Dussair’s sculptural endeavors, separates

the lounge and sauna. The tile in the

sauna/shower space mimics that from

inside the house, along with brighter

orange tiled walls, a color that’s integrated

into the slate flooring, too. “I wanted

something that jumps out a bit,” he says of

the orange color. The sauna, which Doug

admits to using every Thursday, on Sunday

evenings and in between if it’s not taken

over by his daughters and their friends,

seats about four to six people. “It’s a great

place to get away from daily buzz,” says

Doug, who’s a law professor at UMKC’s

School of Law.

The interiors call attention to a Swedish

abstract tree that stands next to one of his

daughter’s paintings and a modern red

chair, while the building’s exterior is the

same material as the main home, making it

look as though it has aged with the

home. To complement and enhance the

connection between the two, landscape

architect Joann Schwarberg designed beds

of plants to surround the retreat, along with

a cozy sitting/patio area.

Using a vacant piece of land, recycled

materials, and help from a friend/builder/

neighbor, Doug can enjoy his sauna-then-

shower ritual that invigorates the mind,

body and soul — while reveling in the

surrounding privacy and peacefulness his

new haus provides.

or parents wondering how to detach their children from the

television or computer, Steve and Karen O’Neill seem to

have found the answer: give them a good reason to go outside.

The couple recently completed an outdoor living project that their

six children can’t resist. “Our teenage kids are utilizing the patio a

lot more and are enjoying the way it is set up,” Steve says. “They

have friends over and hang out around the fireplace instead of sitting

around the TV.”

A family’s new gathering spotoutside their home brings everyone together.

F I R E P O W E RF I R E P O W E RA brick fireplace is the grand centerpiece of a patio that also

includes an outdoor kitchen. It’s ideal for entertaining not only

the kids in the family but the adults as well. The O’Neills hired

Donna Kirsopp, design consultant for Schloegel Design Remodel,

to redesign the outdoor space so it could be better utilized for

entertainment.

“The clients needed more patio area, which would accommodate

large gatherings with multiple areas for seating,” Kirsopp says.

F

Page 113: Kansas City Homes & Gardens

OCTOBER 2010 •• 111

“Steve, an avid griller, wanted an outdoor kitchen that would

accommodate all his barbecue needs, including counter space for

buffet serving, accessory storage and a locked adult-beverage center.”

The inspiration for the impressive fireplace was drawn from

a section of their backyard that features two brick walls with

sweeping curves and columns flanking a wrought iron gate with

delicate swirled designs. Kirsopp emulated the look in the fireplace,

which is enhanced by a curved limestone hearth, column caps and

mantel piece and features scrolled wrought iron brackets that lead

the eye up to an impressive flue capped in copper.

To create cohesion between the new space and the exterior of the

Tudor-style home, Kirsopp used brick as the main material, reusing

salvaged bricks from the original patio and matching them for

additional square footage. “I think as a design element, the brick

gives the pattern in itself a more formal feel. Also, the curves used

in the design could not have been done in stone. I think doing all

the radiuses would have been more difficult with stone. Using brick

adds elegance; it’s a little less rustic,” she says.

Prior to laying the brick, Kirsopp needed to resolve drainage

issues in the backyard to eliminate water buildup on the patio,

which loosens bricks and allows moss to grow. “The under-patio

drainage was a big part of the project. The patio they had constantly

held water, so we put in an underground drainage system that goes

to the front of the house and drains into the street,” she explains.

The process required extensive excavation to also add the

necessary gas and electrical lines for the appliances, which include

a grill, beverage center and warming drawer, and lighting.

“Additional stereo wiring, speakers and a flat-screen mounting

location were incorporated for intimate gatherings around the fire,

sporting events on TV or rockin’ parties. All aspects of the lighting

were considered to enhance architectural detailing and utilitarian

use at the grill, as well as create soft defused lighting for

ambiance,” Kirsopp says.

French doors added to the previously underused living room

that leads out to the patio has made both places more accessible.

With the increase of space for entertaining indoors and out, Steve

says the remodel makes it seem as though another room has been

added to the house.

The extra legroom came in handy last Thanksgiving when the

family of eight plus extended family members gathered together.

With the cooler season once again approaching, the patio and

fireplace will be, literally, the hottest spot to be. Who knows,

maybe it will be so popular no one will bother to watch Turkey Day

football or parades on TV.

he business of pool design has become

much more dramatic. Far from a rectangular

basin of turquoise water, pool design today is a

stage for theater. Take, for instance, the rare

combination of drama, function and aesthetics

displayed in this Leawood project by KC Pro

Landscape and Pools. Owner Nick Dillman says

“It’s a little bit of everything done right.”

The pool’s elaborate design can best be

described in hyphenates: double-sided waterfall,

bi-level terrain, diamond-like glow. A freeform

lagoon pool with the aforementioned waterfalls is

the perennial centerpiece, featuring a wraparound

bench that runs along the perimeter of the

design, including under the waterfall. A unique

combination of materials strikes an agreeable

balance between rustic and luxurious: natural

flagstone, stamped concrete, porcelain and glass

mosaic tiles.

With the elements of fire, lighting, music and, yes, water, the latest trends in pools combine innovative design with

ease of use to create show-stopping outdoor living spaces.

P R O D U C T I O NFULL-SCALE

“The homeowners wanted something nice and

elegant but not over the top,” Dillman says. “It’s

clean but natural. This [design] stands out because

of the elevation, and it all really works. Overall,

we made it very balanced and proportional to the

patio and landscape.”

The pool’s design features multiple levels with

lower and upper basins that help create visual

interest. In addition, using a neutral color palette

of brown, rust and other earth tones allows some

of the pool’s more dramatic features to stand out,

such as the ornate fire bowls. Sitting atop stone

columns, the pool features four fire bowls, three of

which are manually operated and one remote-

controlled. By providing warmth during cooler

evenings and ambiance year-round, Dillman says

fire bowls are a popular addition to pools.

The glistening effect from the pool’s base can be

credited to the special additive in the floor pebbles.

T

Page 115: Kansas City Homes & Gardens

Dillman’s initial consultation with a homeowner involves a detailed

checklist that addresses personal preferences as well as practical

considerations. A diving board can present liability risks; a household

of kids may want rocks to jump from while a more athletically

inclined family might prefer a lap pool or one amenable to volleyball.

Above all, convenience remains a top consideration. The Leawood

project features a remote control and touchscreen LCD so that all

elements — from changing the lighting to turning off the waterfall —

can be controlled easily from multiple points in the home.

Dillman says homeowners are also asking for zero-entry pools, also

known as beach entries, which create a sloped and gradual entrance

into the pool that mimics the design of many high-end resorts. Beach

entries are ideal for children and older individuals, eliminating the

need for pool ladders. He’s also seeing more requests for sun decks for

people who want a shallow area to lay out, while infinity edges remain

consistently popular. This particular design element gives the illusion

of water flowing over the edge of the pool and works well as long as

your yard has the space (as well as an enviable view) to justify it.

“Everyone wants the whole package now — something turnkey,”

Dillman says. Ultimately, the trends in pools point to a desire for

balance between seemingly disparate ideas — between elaborate and

ease of use, function and form, and, in some cases, fire and water.

OCTOBER 2010 •• 113

Aptly named “shimmering sea,” the additive creates a gleaming effect

resembling the appearance of sparkling diamonds. And if that’s not

enough illumination, LED lighting was added inside the pool.

Combined with a state-of-the-art outdoor sound system, the two

elements create a space meant to be enjoyed — perhaps even more

when the sun goes down.

To soften the design, Dillman used thick, mossy stepping stones to

lead to the upper patio. He also brought in spruce and aspen trees to

create a natural Colorado feel. According to him, the landscape is

the final piece that ties the entire plan together, whether it’s to

accommodate the patio furniture or simply accentuate specific

architectural elements.

The renewed interest in pool design can be attributed to an

increasing emphasis on outdoor living. “People aren’t leaving town

and traveling as much. They vacation at home,” Dillman says, adding

that homeowners are typically inspired by past trips to tropical locales

such as Florida and Fiji and want to duplicate the resort feel in their

own backyard.

However, Dillman says an important part of his job is guiding

clients to a design that will fit the overall style of their home. “You

want [the pool] to be a continuation of the existing architecture and

design. It has to make sense. We do not build the same pool for every

house, and every pool is different for every yard.”
