BOOKEND PERFORMANCES BY ‘JUEGO G’--Kansas City’s 6-game road trip opened with James Shields firing blanks in Yankee Stadium and concluded last night with “Big Game” living up to his moniker once again with 7.0 more innings of shutout ball to lead the Royals to a 3-0 win over Detroit in damp Comerica Park...the win enabled KC to regain its one-game lead in the A.L. Central and two-game advantage in the loss column over the Tigers...a 42-minute rain delay at the outset and a fourth inning downpour didn’t stop the Kansas City ace, who allowed a game opening single to Ian Kinsler, promptly picked him off and then retired the next 18 Tigers he faced before Torii Hunter singled with one-out in the seventh...after a walk to Miguel Cabrera, Shields retired the Martinez boys (Victor and J.D.) to escape Detroit’s lone threat of the night...Kelvin Herrera and Wade Davis each worked 1-2-3 frames to complete the contest, with David earning his third professional save, all coming on the road trip...KC plated all it needed in the fourth with RBI singles from Sal Perez and Lorenzo Cain...Cain also tripled in the ninth to cap a 3-hit affair and scored the last run of the game...the combined 2-hitter was the second for the Royals this year, the other a 1-0 loss in Seattle on May 8...all three wins on the just completed road trip were shutouts, two coming in New York. NEVER FORGET--Thirteen years ago today, our country was rocked by the single worst terrorist attack in United States history...to honor those who perished, the Royals and Red Sox will wear special ball caps tonight, as well as all flags will fly at half-staff...there will also be a moment of silence prior to first pitch. SCORELESS STREAKS GALORE--The trio that worked last night’s win in Detroit have amassed a total 78.2 consecutive shutout innings, as Wade Davis, Kelvin Herrera and James Shields have the three longest active scoreless streaks in the American League...Davis has a big league best 30.2 dating back to June 27, while Herrera worked a shutout frame last night to up his streak to 29.2, also dating back to June 27...Shields, who opened the road trip with 8.1 shutout innings in Yankee Stadium, closed the journey with 7.0 scoreless last night and will take the mound next Monday against the White Sox with an active streak of 18.1, which is one out more than the club’s previous best of this year for a starter which was set by Yordano Ventura from April 25-May 5. SHIELDS PICKY YET AGAIN--James Shields is not only tough to hit, but when someone reaches base he pulls out another piece of his arsenal with an accurate pickoff move...after allowing a leadoff single to Ian Kinsler in the first, he immediately picked him off, though replay had to officially award the pickoff, which was Shields’ fourth of the year and 31st since he broke in with the Rays in 2006...dating back to the start of the ‘06 season. Shields’ 31 picks are the most by any righthanded hurler and rank tied for third among all pitchers, trailing only Mark Buehrle (62), Clayton Kershaw (47) and matching Andy Pettitte (31). THE DWINDLING SCHEDULE--Kansas City enters tonight with 18 games remaining on the 2014 docket, which includes the completion of the suspended game on September 22 with KC trailing 4-2 in the 10th, the next 10 are slated for Kauffman Stadium and then the final road trip, which will start with the suspended game in Cleveland...the Tigers are down to 16 games left...KC’s remaining opponents include the Indians (3+ suspended game), Detroit (3), Boston (4) and the White Sox (7)... meanwhile, aside from the three with the Royals, Detroit has Cleveland (3), Minnesota (7) and the White Sox (3). A LONG STAY UNDERWAY--Tonight kicks off Kansas City’s last regular season work in Kauffman Stadium, though hopefully not the last action here this year...this series with the BoSox runs through Sunday, then the ChiSox come in for three, followed by a day off a week from today and then three with the Detroit Tigers. Hitting Notes (Cont.)

This & ThatSCORING CHANGE--Major League Baseball used a video review to remove an August 28 stolen base from Lorenzo Cain and add a fielding error to Minnesota second baseman Brian Dozier...Cain was initially credited with a theft, but MLB overturned that scoring judgement, which took an earned run from Twins’ hurler Tommy Milone.A BETTER CLUTCH NIGHT--For the first time in 12 games, the Royals had more than two hits with runners in scoring position, going 3-for-10 in last night’s win over the Tigers in Motown...dating back to August 29, the Royals have gone 6-5 with a suspended game still pending and hit just .188 by going 18-for-96...prior to August 29, the Royals were leading the Majors in hitting in RISP situations with a .277 mark, but have since dropped to fifth at a still respectable .270.REALITY BASEBALL--The Royals are becoming reality TV as the networks have taken notice for the final home series of the year against the Tigers...the Friday night games (September 19) has been picked up by ESPN 2 as part of their new contract with Major League Baseball that they can select “Postseason Impact Games” as the season slate wanes...the Saturday, September 20, contest has been moved from a 6:10 first pitch to 12:05 to accommodate the FOX Network for a national telecast...all Fan Appreciation Day festivities will still take place despite the earlier start time...finally, the Sunday, September 21, home finale has been added to the TBS schedule, though it will not impact the already scheduled 1:10 start...Fox Sports Kansas City will still carry both the Friday and Sunday games vs. the Tigers.A SERIES SETBACK--It hasn’t happened often over the last two months, but the Royals are coming off just their second series loss over their last 15 sets played...since July 22, the Royals have posted a 32-14 record, tying Baltimore for the most wins in that span...Kansas City has won series in Chicago, vs. Oakland (home and road), Minnesota (two at home and one on the road), at Arizona, at Texas, vs. San Francisco, at home vs. Cleveland and in New York...the lone series losses have come to the Tigers in Detroit and here to the Tribe during the last homestand, while the only split was a 2-game stop in Colorado last month.HOMEWORK--The Royals have won their last three here in Kauffman Stadium and are 17-7 in the last 24 here...the year began with a rough 21-25 home ledger until turning the corner with a win over the Tigers on July 13...the Royals are also seeing a resurgence at the gate in 2014, with KC entering tonight with a season total of 1,673,976 for 71 home dates, an increase of 153,988 over a year ago at this juncture...the Royals have averaged 23,577 per contest this year which paces the total to just under the 1.91 million mark and it would be the highest single-season total since 1993 when KC had 1,934,578 fans attend the 80-game home slate.SUSPENDED GAME RESUMPTION--The Cleveland Indians announced that the September 22 resumption of the August 31 suspended game will have a 6:05 first pitch in Progressive Field (5:05 Kansas City time)...the game will resume with Kansas City coming to bat in the bottom of the 10th inning, trailing 4-2, with Mike Moustakas scheduled to face reliever Kyle Crockett...the Indians plated a pair of unearned runs in the top of the 10th just prior to the storm’s arrival...all players on both expanded rosters are eligible to participate in the game resumption unless they’ve already been removed from the contest.CHALLENGES FEW AND FAR BETWEEN--Manager Ned Yost asked for his first review since August 24 when he felt Ian Kinsler was indeed picked off at first base in the first inning last night...he and video guru Bill Duplissea were accurate in their assessment of the situation and got confirmation that Eric Hosmer did slap the tage on Kinsler in time...Yost, Dupe and the Royals have been extremely successful this year, going 21-12 in reviews (64%)...on the flip side, KC’s opponents have gone 16-for-38 (42%) in replay challenges.SHARPENING THE SHORT GAME--The Royals had three more infield hits last night and enter tonight leading the American League with 144...Kansas City has four in the Top 10 individually in infield knocks with Nori Aoki and Alcides Escobar tying for fifth with 24, while Lorenzo Cain is ninth with 23, followed by Jarrod Dyson tied for 10th (22).THREE WAS PLENTY--When James Shields and the pen is firing shutout, it’s not necessary for the Royals to hit their 4-run threshold to gain a victory, which was the case last night, as KC upped its mark to 18-53 when scoring three or fewer in a game...when the Royals plate at least four runs in a game, they are an impressive 62-10 and dating back to the start of 2013, the Royals are 126-24 when scoring four or more.DAVIS AMONG BASEBALL’S ELITE--Wade Davis was forced to step in for regular closer Greg Holland during the last road trip and capped a trio of shutout with the first three saves of his professional career...Davis now possesses the Majors’ longest scoreless inning streak at 30.2, while his season ERA of 0.70 is tops in the Majors among all hurlers who have thrown at least 40.0 innings...the last run Wade allowed was on June 25th and has been the lone run surrendered in his last 52.0 innings for a 0.17 ERA dating back to April 26...since giving up two earned runs on April 5, Wade has allowed only two runs over his last 57 outings (59.0 innings) for a 0.31 ERA, while fanning 93...he opened the year going almost four full months without allowing an extra-base hit, but Minnesota’s Kurt Suzuki doubled on July 31.HOLLY GETTING A REST--Greg Holland has had the last week off to rest a tight triceps, but the KC closer still ranks second in the A.L. with 42 saves...he is the first to record back-to-back 40-save seasons for KC since Dan Quisenberry did it in 1983 (45) and ‘84 (44)...Holly has made good of 42 of his 44 tries this year, including 35 of the last 36 and 16 in a row...over a longer haul, Holland has converted 82 of his last 85 attempts (96.5%) since May 30 of last season, the highest percentage among closers with at least 40 opportunities in that span...since that date, Greg has five more saves than any other pitcher in baseball (Craig Kimbrel - 77) and has allowed just 14 earned runs in 107.1 innings for a 1.17 ERA...he recorded his 100th career save on August 8 and since posting his first career save on August 3, 2011 vs. Baltimore, Holland has gone 109-for-119, the best save pct. at 91.6 among closers with at least 100 save opportunities...since becoming Kansas City’s full-time closer on August 1, 2012, Holland has gone 105-for-112 in save situations, the most saves in the majors while Holly’s 93.8 save pct. is the best among relievers with at least 80 save chances.
