The BEST ConceptBEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) is a program designed to encourage youth in engineering, science and technology through a sports-like contest in which local high school students design and build a remote-controlled robot. Education and industry professionals volunteer as mentors, providing professional expertise in the design and construction processes. To simulate a “real world” business and engineering environment, some restrictions include:

• Short development time (six weeks)• Limited components (identical materials provided)• Specific design requirements (size, weight, etc.)

The BEST program goals are intended to inspire students towards careers in engineering, science and technology, by showing that it can be fun and exciting. These are accomplished through local “hub” competitions, of which Kansas BEST is one. Other hubs are located in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Indiana, Colorado, Kentucky, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, North Dakota, Tennessee and Connecticut. There are three regional competitions in November with the top teams competing at Texas BEST held at North Texas University, South#s BEST held at Auburn University, and Frontier Trails BEST held at the University of Arkansas at Ft. Smith.

The BEST program receives vital support from school administrators and local businesses. Financial support is received from both individuals and industry. Sponsors for the 2011 Kansas BEST competition are listed at the end of the program.

2011 GAME: “BUGS!”A current hot topic of research and development is in the area of genetic engineering. This involves manipulating a living cell#s inherited material to produce an organism with a desired trait.

BEST Genetics decided to investigate genetically engineering various types of bugs. Everything was on track for some major breakthroughs; that is, until yesterday. The containment area on three different habitats failed and some genetically engineered flies, cockroaches, and termites escaped from the laboratory. This could be catastrophic for not only BEST Genetics, but for the environment at large. Therefore, it is imperative that BEST Genetics captures and controls these bugs as quickly and safely as possible.

The scientists at BEST Genetics have traced the bugs to an abandoned shed on the far side of the property at a new construction site. However, BEST Genetics is not equipped to handle the bug recovery. They contacted BEST Robotics to rapidly develop a prototype robot to recover the bugs and avert the potential crisis. Of course, priority one is to salvage as much of the research work as possible. Since four types of bugs escaped, BEST Genetics needs at least one of each bug returned alive. But they are also concerned about the bugs# well being, so it is recommended that the bugs be segregated by type. There are also concerns that the bugs have not gotten enough nourishment in the wild, so feeding the bugs should also be a priority.

The objective of the game is to design and build a robot to safely handle the bugs and/or food and to carefully transport them from their current location to one of three containment areas.

Each bug and piece of food that is located in a team#s containment area at the end of the match will score points for that team. Multipliers and bonus points will be factored in based on each particular containment area. The score for each match will be added to the previous match to create a cumulative score.

THE DEAN’S CIRCLEThe Dean#s Circle is a group of engineering alumni and friends of Wichita State University who have joined together to support the College of Engineering. The organization began in 1989 to support projects to help the College of Engineering stay in the top ranks of engineering universities."The Kansas BEST steering committee originated from a group of individuals from the Dean's Circle who enthusiastically accepted the challenge to bring the BEST program to Kansas in order to motivate high school students toward careers in engineering, science and technology."At the same time, BEST provided a means to showcase opportunities at Wichita State University."In 2000, the Dean#s Circle funded the Bill Wilhelm Engineering Scholarship with unique eligibility requirements including participation in a previous Kansas BEST event.
