Kanien'keha kaOne of the constituent oppressor nation entities of north amerika, quebec, willbe ceding back 300 hectares of farmland to the Kanienkeh:ka at Kahnaw:ke. Thisis land that was appropriated in 2006 during construction of the Highway 30project. It lies along the border of Kahnaw:ke and the franco-settlercommunities of Chteauguay, St-Constant, Ste-Isidore and Ste-Catherine nearoccupied Hochelaga.

The following report is from the bourgeois Montreal Gazette. Most interestingly,or perhaps ironically, this article notes the outrage felt by manyfranco-settlers that the Parti Qubcois government would give the land back tothe Kanienkeh:ka. These same franco-settler (qubcois) communities are oftenthe epitomy of north amerikan settlerism, frothing at the mouth withanti-onkwehn:we racism. This was notable during the so-called Oka Crisis whenthe nearby Kanienkeh:ka community of Kanehsat:ke blockaded roads near thefranco-settler town of Oka in defense of sacred land that the settlers wereattempting to turn into a golf course and condo developments. They were joined inaction by the people of Kahnaw:ke who blocked the Mercier Bridge, one of themajor arteries into occupied Hochelaga (Montreal). Franco-settlers rioted inanti-onkwehn:we actions, and were whipped into a settlerist frenzy byfrancophone radio hosts who consistently reminded them that the Kanienkeh:kadont even speak French.

A group of South Shore mayors are reeling after the Parti Qubcois governmentannounced its decision Friday to give back 300 hectares of land to the KahnawakeMohawks.

The farmland was appropriated in 2006 during construction of the Highway 30project and will be ceded back to the First Nation in the near future. It liesalong the border of Kahnawake, Chteauguay, St-Constant, Ste-Isidore andSte-Catherine.

But the mayors claim they were never consulted throughout the process, which ledthem dumbfounded by Fridays announcement.

Right now, (the PQ) has been talking and negotiating with Kahnawake and tellingus on one occasion they pass by and say: Listen, we started to discuss about it

with Kahnawake, and well come back and youll be part of the process, but thatnever happened, Chteauguay Mayor Nathalie Simon told CTV Montreal.

Mohawk band council spokesperson Joe Delaronde said he doesnt understand thesource of controversy.

This has been in the works for years now, wheres the surprise, he told TheGazette. I guess thats how it goes sometimes.

Delaronde would not comment further on the matter until it is brought before theband council Monday. Reports of negotiations over the 300 hectares were widelypublicized in The Gazette and other media as early as July 2012.

Simon told CTV Montreal she believes the land that will be handed over to theMohawks belongs to her municipality. Calling the 300 hectares our territory,

the statement elicited some reaction over Twitter and other social media withobservers noting the irony of a non-aboriginal politician complaining aboutlosing land to an aboriginal reserve.

This may be the first time since Confederation that land has been given back tothe Kahnawake Mohawks. The First Nation is in the preliminary stages of filing a40,000 acre land claim with the federal government that dates back to the 17thcentury.
