Sports - There were plenty of winners at the 19th-annual Scott Tokessy Memorial Gold Glove Tournament, but the ulti-mate winner was CHEO.

An avid bicyclist, Hough met with a pair of women from Victoria, B.C. while cycling in Cuba in 2007.

The Victoria women had be-gun their own cycling event in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign which supports African grandmothers looking after their grandchil-dren.

Hough was inspired by the cycling event, and returned to Ottawa hoping to start some-thing similar with help from the Grassroot Grannies.

Now, the Ride to Turn the Tide is one of the Grassroot Grannies’ largest fundraisers for the foundation, alongside their

annual Mother’s Day plant sale. The funds they raise are part

of the $19.5 million raised by Canadians for the foundation’s campaign.

The Grandmothers to Grand-mothers campaign is a response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic that killed millions of parents in Af-rica, leaving grandmothers as the primary caregivers to mil-lions of children.

The money helps to provide grandmothers with some basic needs like food, housing and school fees, but also to support grandmothers’ small businesses with small grants.

That’s an important aspect for Hough, she said.

“The money is going to help make the grandmothers inde-pendent,” said Hough. “They

help them set up projects and small businesses to be entrepre-neurs so that they can be self-suffi cient and make money to support their grandchildren.”

The Grassroot Grannies ride raises funds through sponsor-ship of the 22 cyclists ranging in age from 40 to 75 who take part in the 270-kilometre ride.

Donations can be made to in-dividual cyclists or to the group. So far, more than $24,700 has been donated.

The bike ride isn’t getting any easier for the Grassroot Grannies, said Shirley Mander, a member of the group.

The group started up spring training sessions for the fi rst time last year to get riders ready for the two-and-a-half day ride.

“Yet our challenge pales in

comparison to the hardship ex-perienced daily by the grand-mothers and their orphaned grandchildren in Africa,” said Mander in a news release. “Their courage and resilience remains an inspiration to us.”

This year, a member of the Victoria group will be taking part in the Ottawa ride, while one of the Grassroot Grannies will be headed to Victoria to participate in theirs, honouring the connection between the two groups since the Ride to Turn the Tide began.

To make a donation for the Ride to Turn the Tide, go to grassrootgrannies.com/events for a link to their donation site.

The ride begins on Sept. 3 at the Bushtukah store on 5607 Hazeldean Rd. in Stittsville.

Community - One of Kanata’s newest communities is holding its second-annual Summerfest party at Kristina Kiss Park on Aug. 23.

The event includes entertainment

for children and adults alike with the aim of having community mem-bers meet their new neighbours for a day of fun, said organizer Sakshi Oberoi.

About 200 to 300 people came to the south Kanata community’s in-augural Trailwest Summerfest last year, said Oberoi, who hopes to see up to 600 people this year.

“We got such a great response last year we just thought we should keep it up,” she said.

The event, which takes place be-tween 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., will in-clude a bouncy castle, a water slide, face painting, cotton candy, a magi-cian, dancers, balloon animals and more.

Little Ray’s Reptiles will return by popular demand to do a show fea-turing some scaly creatures.

JUMP! 106.9 will provide music at the event, as well as giving away prizes and holding contests.

Two groups of dancers will per-form at the event, one with a Bol-lywood/belly dance fusion style, and the second group performing ballet.

Food will also be available for purchase, with the proceeds going back to the Trailwest community.

With hundreds expected to attend, the Trailwest Community Associa-tion is still looking for volunteers to help run Summerfest, said Oberoi, especially for clean-up after the event.

Anyone interested in lending a hand can email [email protected].

Construction of the Trailwest com-munity is nearly done, said Oberoi, with just one builder left working on a few houses. “We are a much bigger community now,” she said.

With so many new neighbours, Summerfest is a great way to get to know each other, said Oberoi.

The Glen to hold fundraiser for hospiceStaff

News - The Glen Scottish Pub & Restaurant will be living up to its name on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 24.

That’s because it will be “Scot-tish Day at the Glen” with a host of Scottish entertainment among the activities.

It’s all a fundraiser in memory of the late Ivan Warner of Stittsville, with all of the proceeds going to the ongoing campaign to raise funds for a residential hospice to serve the west Ottawa area.

Warner, who was Stittsville’s Cit-izen of the Year in 2013, benefi tted from hospice care in his fi nal days with his wife June and his family now strong advocates and support-ers of establishing a hospice to serve the western Ottawa area.

On Sunday, Aug. 24, from noon to 4 p.m., the Glen Scottish Pub & Restaurant becomes even more Scottish than normal. The Arnprior McNab Pipes & Drugs will be per-forming throughout the afternoon, as will a number of highland danc-ers.

The Scottish Society will have a presence at the event.

There should be kids games at the fundraiser and a silent auction will be held, with auction items being sought from the various businesses in the Jackson Trails Centre plaza as well as from other businesses in the community.

Anyone who would like to donate an item for the silent auction should contact Christine Philipson at 613-831-1575.

A highlight of the fundraiser will be a tug-of-war competition involv-ing Ottawa fi refi ghters, among oth-ers, and including even the pipe band members in their kilts.

Another highlight of the fundrais-er promises to be a huge bake sale and CFRA radio’s Steve Madely has been invited to auction off some pies, something which he did with great success a at a fundraiser dance for the hospice project at the Lions Hall in Stittsville earlier this year.

Both Mayor Jim Watson and city of Stittsville Coun. Shad Qadri are expected to be in attendance at this fundraiser.

“It was a good year,” said Perkins. Most of the money raised through

the tournament comes from year-long raffl e ticket sales from the Kanata Little League Baseball Association and con-cession sales during the tournament, said Perkins.

It was a strong year for Kanata teams as well, which took home gold in three of the tournament’s 11 divisions.

RESULTS:

• Junior A: Ottawa West in fi rst, South Ottawa in second and Kanata In-termediate in third

• Junior B: Drummondville in fi rst, Orléans S in second and Kanata in third

• Major A: Kanata in fi rst, Glebe in second and Orléans in third

• Major B Division 1: Drummond-ville in fi rst and East Nepean P in sec-ond

• Major B Division 2: East Nepean C in fi rst and Ottawa West M in second

• Minor A Division 1: Fayetteville in fi rst and Ottawa West in second

• Minor A Division 2: Kanata in fi rst and High Park in second

• Minor B Division 1: Montreal in fi rst and Orléans (Paquette) in second

• Minor B Division 2: Orléans (Byers) in fi rst and Perth in second

• Rookie A: Kanata A in fi rst and South Ottawa P in second

• Rookie B: Brockville in fi rst and South Ottawa K in second

HOME RUN DERBY

Another money-raiser for the tourna-ment was the home-run derby, said Per-kins, calling it a big success. Coaches and other adults make a donation to par-ticipate, and try to hit the ball into one of three targets in the outfi eld to win a prize.

Having hit the $300,000 mark for to-tal donations to CHEO, tournament or-ganizers are gearing up to soar past that total with the 20th-annual tournament next year, said Perkins.

“That’s certainly I think what the general feeling is, that we are going to try and make a pretty big splash next year,” he said, though there is no telling what that might look like. Organizers don’t meet again until January to start planning.

The tournament is held in memory of 11-year-old Scott Tokessy, a Kanata baseball player, who hit his last home run during a baseball game in 1996.

After rounding the bases, Scott col-lapsed due to an irregular heartbeat. The heart condition was not known at the time, and Scott died.

Now, the event is Canada’s largest little league tournament for charity.

The city celebrated the heritage and his-tory of the Ottawa River last week at Pinhey’s Point Historic Site.

Today, it is the source of drinking water for millions living in Ottawa and

Gatineau, and boasts several beaches for recreational use.

Boast is perhaps too strong a word, considering the number of times the nation’s capital has been forced to shut down its popular swimming areas due to a rise in E. coli levels, caused by animal droppings washed into the water and rainfall, which causes sewage systems to overfl ow into the river.

The root of the problem is an old network of pipes, built between the late 1800s and 1960, that carry both storm water and untreated sewage, creating combined sewer overfl ows.

Last month, millions of litres of untreated sewage was dumped into the river during heavy rain storms.

The overfl ow is supposed to be treated at sewage plants, but the city is forced to divert the mixture into the river to prevent possible fl ooding and sewer

backups. The city is now in the fi fth year of the Ottawa Riv-

er Action Plan, a combination of 17 projects aimed at improving the health of the river, including a $195-million plan to build large underground storage tanks to capture sewage in the event a treatment plant can’t process it fast enough.

The plan aims to virtually eliminate the dumping of sewage into the Ottawa River.

The city hopes to cover one third of the cost with the federal and provincial governments kicking in the rest of the funding.

The provincial government says it supports the plan but is waiting for the federal government to commit funding until making any commitment.

Meanwhile a new round of federal infrastructure funding is scheduled to begin this year.

Our local MPs need to take action and press the government to provide the needed money as soon as possible.

Right now we have a massive natural feature that is nice to look at but too often dangerous to touch.

OPINIONOPINION Connected to your community

The week before our camping trip, I had big plans for my kids.

They’d done the day camps – music, canoeing, etc – we had done and would be doing more family tent camping.

Week fi ve of summer was going to be jam-packed with activities with mom: trips to museums, maybe a beach day, rent a boat at Dow’s Lake, a trip to Parliament, perhaps a visit to the grandparents’ house.

And then I put my back out. Six days before the big solo camping trip and with no scheduled childcare, I found myself unable to walk.

At fi rst, in my usual non-resilient way, I just moaned internally and wondered how the heck I was going to make it through the week. Then I

moaned on Facebook. Then I called my mother, who lives overseas and just had knee surgery, and I moaned to her. In other words, I did nothing productive or useful.

And then I did something I rarely do: I completely dropped my parent-ing standards.

It was the best thing I ever did.Without my usual “eat healthy

food,” “go outside,” “let’s get this closet organized” voice, the kids were super relaxed. In fact, they didn’t re-

ally care to go out. They just wanted to have some hang time at home, you know, because it’s summer.

I’ve categorized their week of “do-ing nothing” as a sort of lesson plan that other parents could follow.

Introduction to fi rst aid: Help mom with ice pack and heat pad.

Arts and crafts war history hour: With pencils and some cardboard, the boys make get well soon cards, including exploding Zeppelins and Second World War bombers.

Fitness: Toddler does yoga stretch-es on the living room carpet for the fi rst two hours of the morning. Older kids hold an impromptu dance party in the living room.

Anatomy: Eight-year-old teaches himself how to infl ate a glove with his nose.

Nature studies: An hour in the backyard under the sun, poking toads, while mom loosely offers direction from the zero gravity chair.

Survival skills: The boys choose to make their own lunch or starve.

Media studies: Toddler naps. Mom naps. Boys watch Pokemon movie and other quality programming on Netfl ix.

Culinary arts: Dinner is from a can. Boys warm on stove.

Personal hygiene: No baths. Yay! Self-discipline: Kids put them-

selves to bed about 90 minutes later than normal, but ...

Literary studies: They have a stack of good books that mom picked up from the library the day before her injury.

The next four days were pretty much a repeat of the fi rst.

Swap ’70s Passe-Partout for Poke-mon and frozen for canned food and you kind of get the gist.

All said, the week went well and I wondered if most of us take this par-enting thing just a little too seriously to have a good time.

Maybe kids, just left to be kids, can do a lot of learning and have a whole lot of fun all by themselves.

Community - A local au-thor’s book was brought out-doors for a family book walk event that aims to keep liter-acy alive.

The Western Ottawa Com-munity Resource Centre held a book walk at Walter Baker Park on Aug. 8 for the fi rst time since beginning the read-ing events in 2013.

The event, meant to get families outdoors and read-ing together, puts the pages of a children’s book on posters hanging on trees. Children and their families go from tree to tree pausing to read sections of the book, and are prompted to search for animals, pine cones and other natural objects.

They are also encouraged to act out parts of the book,

bringing the reading experi-ence alive, said Joceline Jail-let, an organizer of the event through the Ontario Early Years Centre.

“We want to encourage literacy and we also want to encourage family time,” said Jaillet of the free event.

“(The walk) is to let kids know that reading doesn’t just have to be before bed time, it can be any time and it can be found anywhere,” she said.

The walk also gives fami-lies a chance to explore walk-ing tails they may never have visited before, with past events having taken place at the Old Quarry Trail, and holding their fi rst event at Walter Bak-er Park where more than 30 people attended.

The book chosen for the lat-est walk was “Konrad, I Will Find You” by Kanata author

Jennifer Perlin.The book was particularly

suited to the walk, as it depicts Konrad’s imaginary adven-tures across Canada’s wilder-ness and beyond. The book is about the anxiety of starting school, and attempts to assure kids that their parents will al-ways be able to fi nd them even when they are dealing with a new environment, said Perlin in a previous interview with the Kourier-Standard.

The book is available in both French and English, meaning the book walk could include both French and English families together, instead of holding two sepa-rate walks with two different books.

“It’s great to be here and watching the kids enjoy it,” said Perlin, who was signing books at the walk.

“I’ve never heard of the walk before,” she said. “It’s a great idea.”

This is the second summer the book walks have been held, and organizers are hop-

ing to hold another walk in the fall.

Lifestyle - Here’s an easy warm summer salad when it’s just too hot to cook in-doors. Sweet strawberries are a nice contrast to the spinach and slightly salty feta cheese. Note that all four food groups (grains, meat, vegetables and dairy) make this a complete meal. Preparation time: 20 minutes. Cooking time: 15 minutes.Serves four.

INGREDIENTS

• 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts• Salt, pepper and vegetable oil• 15 ml (1 tbsp) honey mustard or Dijon mustard• 300 ml (1-1/4 cups) chicken stock• 250 ml (1 cup) couscous• 500 ml (2 cups) strawberries• 500 ml (2 cups) baby spinach• 3 green onions, sliced• 500 ml (1/4 cup) chopped fresh

parsley• 50 ml (1/4 cup) olive oil• 25 ml (2 tbsp) fresh lemon juice• 125 ml (1/2 cup) crumbled feta

cheese (about 60 g/2 oz)

PREPARATION

Season chicken with salt and pepper; brush lightly with oil. Place on grill over medi-um heat; close lid and grill for three minutes per side. Brush with mustard; grill until the chicken is no longer pink in-side: six to eight minutes.

Meanwhile, bring chicken stock to boil; pour over cous-cous in large salad bowl and cover to keep warm.

Slice chicken into strips. Cut strawberries into halves or quarters (depending on size). Add to couscous along with spinach, green onions, parsley, olive oil and lemon juice; toss well. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Garnish with feta cheese.

It seemed to me back then, Fa-ther, whenever he wasn’t work-ing the fi elds, was either mend-ing fences or blowing up stones

or stumps. Three generations of Hanemans

had tried, with only moderate suc-cess, to clear all the land that ran like

a narrow ribbon from the Northcote Side Road, across the creek and the Bonnechere, and then to the back-fi elds.

There seemed to be boulders ev-erywhere. And stumps, still deep in the ground, where trees had been felled, with their roots left to begin new growth.

And so Father, when time permit-ted, would perform what Mother called “pioneering,” whatever that meant.

Father would take dynamite and uproot stumps which would then serve as fencing, piled in rows to separate fi elds.

Or he would blow up stones, im-bedded deep in the ground, heap what was left of them onto the stone boat, and get rid of them wherever Father saw fi t.

It seemed to me there were stones everywhere on that farm.

Some were deep and fl at and close to the house, and on these I could play “Jacks,” and I hoped Father would never put the dynamite to them.

There were also loose stones, much bigger ones, around the out-house. Some right against it by na-ture, and others piled there to keep the little building upright. Even the rain barrel at the corner of the house sat on a big fl at rock.

My sister Audrey and I wanted no part of the blasting.

But my three brothers, far more adventurous, couldn’t wait to join Father when he let it be known that he was about to blast something out, be it stumps or stones.

Even though they knew exactly how it was done, Father alone was the only one to touch the dynamite.

And then one day, a hot summer afternoon it was, Emerson took it upon himself to test his ability as a blaster.

Unknown to Father of course, or Mother for that matter, Emerson de-cided to try his luck at blasting one of the big stones sitting against the outhouse, unknown to anyone, of course.

The fi rst hint we had was when

there was an ungodly bang, and Mother peeling potatoes in the sum-mer kitchen, with me beside her, barely missed being hit on the head with a piece of rock the size of fry pan that came through the back win-dow, sailed past her head and settled against the wood box by the Findlay Oval.

Our feet barely hit the fl oor as we tore outside to see what had hap-pened.

Well, there was Emerson, smart enough to be well away from the scene of the crime, with his face cov-ered with ash, and two dead hens be-side him. They had been hit head on.

What was left of the outhouse, lay on its side, with the two holes point-ing westward, and the big stone be-side it smashed to smithereens.

Apart from the loss of two hens, which Mother soon decided would be our supper that night; Mother was amazingly unfazed by the turn of events.

She hated the outhouse with a passion, and had long since said she was going to have Old Herman, an authority on outhouses, build a new one as soon as she could afford the new lumber.

Until that happened, the two holes alone would be up-righted, and would have to do as an outhouse.

Fortunately, they were well hid-den in a cluster of cedar trees.

Father was harder to deal with. Apart from the danger, a point he barely touched on, he lamented on the loss of the two sticks of dynamite that had been wasted on a building that had served the Haneman family for three generations.

MATT MUIRHEAD PROPOSES CREATION OF KANATA CENTRAL PARKInspired by planning vision of Beaverbrook founder Bill TeronBy Megan Punnett

City Council candidate Matt Muirhead says Kanata North residents have had enough of big box stores and would rather see his proposal for a Kanata Central Park come to fruition instead. The frontrunning candidate for City Councillor in Kanata North in the October 27 municipal election, Muirhead says his proposal for a Kanata Central Park is just one of the ways he’s imagining the Kanata of the future.

The forested lands along Kanata Avenue between Campeau Drive and Maritime Way (opposite the Holiday Inn and across from the Best Buy) are under threat of development. A City-owned parcel of approximately 11 hectares in the Town Centre lands is being studied for transformation into a traditional commercial main street, with box stores and chain restaurants on both sides of Kanata Avenue.

At a June 2013 public meeting concerning the development of the Town Centre lands, Muirhead, the current president of the Kanata Lakes Community Association, called for wider public consultation. It was there that he fi rst proposed the creation of a “Kanata Central Park” instead of more chain stores on the wooded side of the street.

“We were told by incumbent councillor, Marianne Wilkinson, that residents couldn’t save the land north of the Beaver Pond because taxpayers didn’t own it. Consequently, that forest has been completely razed to the ground. If elected as Councillor for Kanata North, I won’t allow that to happen again,” said Muirhead, “We have a real opportunity to build something unique and creative – and to increase our usable green space. We can’t lose this chance for the sake of a few big box stores; we have more than enough of those in

Kanata”.

“We own the land - we the taxpayers - and we should seize this opportunity. My vision for a Kanata Central Park is a place for all ages, with walkable trails, lighting, a bandstand, a dog park, Bixi bike rentals, as well as ample space to have a picnic lunch, host a wedding or even do tai chi,” added Muirhead, “There are so many possibilities!”

“Let’s follow the example set by Bill Teron, who developed Beaverbrook, to preserve as much natural greenspace as possible,” continued Muirhead, “Not to ravage every last square inch for the sake of a few stores”.

He points to Centrum Plaza as the appropriate location for further business development such as stores, restaurants, and other commercial enterprises.

A former President of the Briarbrook-Morgan’s Grant Community Association, Muirhead says he is in the council race to fi ght for the future of Kanata. His previously released platform planks include:

• Advocating for Kanata’s inclusion in the city’s Light Rail plan;

• Pushing to restore weekly garbage pick-up in the warmer months until the green bin program is fi xed and improved (Muirhead proposes the use of plastic bags as a way to achieve better “buy-in” to the program. Sports - It was a record-breaking week-end for the 18th-annual Kunstadt Open Tennis Tournament at the Glen Cairn Ten-nis Club.

The tournament, which ran from Aug. 6 to 10, saw the longest match played in its 18-year history, lasting nearly four hours. It also saw its youngest fi nalist, 17-year-old Jordan Sweeney from Orléans, battle for the top prize.

Despite the exciting action, the tourna-ment ended with both the men’s and wom-en’s top seeds taking fi rst place.

Nicolas Vincent from Hull had a fairly smooth tournament, keeping his matches to two sets throughout the tournament, including for the fi nal match-up against Sweeney.

Sweeney, on the other hand, managed a few upsets, said Ron Kunstadt, vice presi-dent of Kunstadt Sports and an organizer of the tournament.

“He beat our second seed (Zhenia Kon-dratovsky) on Saturday night in the quar-ter-fi nals, which was a bit of a surprise,” said Kunstadt.

“We all know he is a great player,” he said, but nonetheless had a tough road to the fi nals with a three-set semifi nal match against tenth seed Sasha Mironov.

Despite Sweeney’s strong push to the fi nals, the wins ended for Sweeney with a fairly quick match against Vincent, with a score of 6-3 and 6-2 for Vincent.

The youngest champion in the tourna-ment’s history was a 21-year-old player in 1999.

The women’s fi nals saw Fournier, last year’s champ from the Hog’s Back area, take on her perpetual rival, Petra Januskova from Nepean.

“In their lives, they’ve probably played each other 50 times,” said Kunstadt, with

several of those matches taking place in the Kunstadt open fi nals.

The match lasted three sets, with Fourni-er starting off with a 6-3 win, but Janus-kova coming back to take the second set 6-3. However, Fournier would remain the champ ending the fi nal set 6-4.

The tournament’s second record-break-ing match occurred via a pairing of Ron Kunstadt and Bill McEachern who has played in all 18 Kunstadt Opens.

The match lasted three hours and 45 minutes, ending as the longest match in

the tournament’s history and a win for McEachern.

Organizers said the match was a fan fa-vourite, with a score of 7-5, 5-7 and 7-5, but likely took a lot out of the competitors.

“I don’t think I could have played the next day anyways,” said Kunstadt.

While Kunstadt may have been spent, the tournament certainly isn’t he said.

“We are never stopping,” said Kunstadt. “We are going to run it for the next 100 years. I don’t think I will be alive, but there will be a 100th-annual Kunstadt Open.”

OPEN HOUSE - SUN. AUG. 17, 1-3PM

News – A suspect who tried and failed to suc-cessfully rob a bank at the Elmvale Acres Shop-ping Centre last week may strike again.

That’s why investigators with the Ottawa po-lice robbery unit are hoping someone will recog-nize the suspect, who was recorded on in-bank video during the alleged robbery on Wed., Aug. 6.

“The concern obviously is now that he did leave empty handed … there’s the possibility then that he may make another attempt,” Staff. Sgt. Michael Haarbosch, who heads up the rob-bery unit, told The News. “So that’s why we’d like to get him into custody sooner rather than later.”

A man chatting on a cellphone entered a bank at the shopping centre around 5:10 p.m. and then briefl y sat inside the branch before walking up to a bank employee.

“He then produced a note indicating it was a robbery and demanded money,” Haarbosch said in a statement. “The suspect insinuated he was armed but no weapon was seen.”

The lone male fl ed empty-handed. No one was injured in the encounter.

It’s not clear why the man demanded money, but did not stay long enough to secure any mon-ey, Haarbosch said, adding the suspect turned around and walked out of the bank branch. Po-lice are not disclosing which bank was targeted.

“I’m not sure if he got spooked by some-

thing or saw something or if he got impatient,” said Haarbosch. “He was on the phone coming through the door. I suppose there’s always the possibility he had a second person outside and maybe that person saw something.”

Police are looking for a black male, about fi ve-foot-10, with a heavy build. He was wear-ing a white and yellow-hooded sweatshirt, jean shorts and white running shoes.

If you have any information about the rob-bery, call the Ottawa police robbery unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 5116, or make an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477.

Community - Amateur ar-cheologists of all ages can unearth the city’s historical secrets during archeology month.

All through August, the city and National Capital Commission are offering workshops, programs and exhibitions of interest to his-tory buffs and kids who want to get their hands dirty.

A rare opportunity to par-ticipate in the excavation of an archeological site will take place on Aug. 23 and 24 at Vincent Massey Park.

National Capital Com-mission Archeologist Ian Badgley will lead two day-long digs aimed at gaining a better understanding of his-tory of the site before west-ern contact.

Located at an ancient portage point on the Rideau River, the site was used by people in the Archaic Period around 4,000 years ago.

Participation is free but parking at the lot off River-side drive is $7 per day.

More information is avail-able at ncc-ccn.gc.ca or by calling 613-239-5678 ext. 5751.

For children aged six to nine, a hands-on program at Billings Estate National His-toric Site, 2100 Cabot St.,

teaches youngsters how to set up a digging grid, iden-tify and date artifacts and make a time capsule.

The program takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. every

Wednesday in August. Reg-istration is recommended by calling 613-247-4830 and the cost is $6 per child.

In the west end, families can become explorers for a day at Pinhey’s Point His-toric Site, located at 270 Pin-hey’s Point Rd. in Dunrobin. On Saturdays in August from 10 a.m. to noon, the Explor-er’s Club will have families learning about history, natu-

ral heritage and ecosystems together as they search for insects, wildlife and geologi-cal features.

An exhibit of pre-con-tact and historical archeol-ogy related to Ottawa and surrounding areas will take place at city hall for the rest of the month. Presented in partnership with the Algon-

quins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation (Omamawininni Pim-adjwowin – The Algonquin Way Cultural Centre) and the Cultural Education Centre at Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation, the exhibit can be viewed at city hall, 110 Laurier Ave. W. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Diefenbunker, 3911

Carp Rd., has an Archeology Month exhibition running until Aug. 31 describing the industrial and archeologi-cal features both above and below the ground that prove Canada’s will to survive a nuclear attack during the Cold War. The exhibition is included with the cost of ad-mission.

News - It started with a decades-long dream to cycle across Canada.

Rob Montgomery, Mike Woodard, Timo Itkonen, and Richard Blaschek, rolled through Arnprior and much of Ottawa on Aug. 1 – Day 32 of their cross-country ride. The dream has grown to become a fund and aware-ness-raiser for GAiN (Global Aid Net-work) and the Water For Life program, which drills wells and trains people in African communities to care for the water systems.

“I’ve had a dream for many de-cades about cycling across Canada,” said Montgomery. Two years ago, that dream started to become a reality as he recruited the other cyclists. “Mike said to me, ‘If we do it, we need to do it for a cause.’

“There’s a statistic that the World Health Organization shares that really gripped both mine and Mike’s heart: every 21 seconds a child dies because of water-borne disease,” said Mont-gomery. “It’s preventable if we can give them clean drinking water.”

The four men – accompanied by Jacquie Blaschek in the support ve-hicle – make up the Cycling 4 Water

team. They’re on a mission to raise $510,000 for 60 wells to represent the cyclists’ 60-plus years; Montgomery and Woodard will both turn 60 during the ride, while Itkonen just celebrated his 63rd birthday.

The Water For Life program not only drills the wells but it trains a com-mittee to collect a small fee, about one cent a day, for access to the water. The money charged pays for repairs and is reinvested in the communities, said Montgomery.

“Their fi rst responsibility is to make sure the wells are repaired,” he said. “They’re trained and held accountable … to reinvest in the community. A lot of communities, when they have a well for a number of years, have been able to build schools, health clinics, com-munal or community gardens.”

A community well in Tanzania that serves three villages, has built a clinic, a school, and established a fi sh farm to supply the entire region.

“It makes a huge difference for ev-ery community,” said Montgomery, who was recovering from a high-speed fall off his bicycle. He had to take a small break from cycling but with the help of a physiotherapist he’s been get-ting back on his bike for stretches at a time.

He led the group out of Ottawa on Aug. 4.

The group kicked off on June 30 in Vancouver, B.C. and have covered

more than half the distance of the 8,000-kilometre total to their fi nal destination in St. John’s, Newfound-land, which they are on track to reach

by Aug. 23. To date, they’ve raised enough money for 24 wells.

JESSICA CUNHA/METROLAND

Rob Montgomery, Mike Woodard, Timo Itkonen, and Richard Blaschek, rode through Arnprior and parts of Ottawa on Aug. 1 on the 32nd day of their cross-country ride to raise funds and awareness about a Water For Life program, which drills wells and trains people in African communities to care for the water systems.

Page 35: Kanata081414

Continued from page 34

“We’ve gotten to more than half-way across the country and we have more than halfway to go in our goal of 60 wells. We’re a little behind in the funding,” said Montgomery, add-ing that over the course of the ride, he’s been awed by the generosity of strangers.

“Yes we’ve seen some beautiful

scenery. But the people…” he said, trailing off.

The group was staying with a fam-ily when the two children, ages 8 and 6, went to their piggy banks. Both came back with $8.50.

“That gives one person water for a lifetime through the program. We teared up,” said Montgomery.

“No one asked them to do that, they did it of their own initiative.”

In central Alberta, the cyclists stopped at a rest stop. The only other patrons there were two bikers in full leathers with their Harley’s.

“We started chatting with them they asked us about the cause. They opened their wallets and gave us all their cash, about $50,” said Montgomery. “Just out here, we stopped in Cobden for a coffee break. A family was there … three generations. They saw our car

and two of the granddaughters came up and gave $12.75 for water for life for a person and a half.”

The list goes on – Andrew Scheer, Speaker of the House, made a contri-bution and cycled 75-kilometres with the group; a woman who runs an ice cream parlour treated everyone to ice

cream; the community in Dryden, Ont. rallied to raise $1,700 and the cyclists received a police escort into town; one extended family contributed more than $1,000 – and on and on.

“We were just blown away,” said Montgomery.

“The generosity of Canadians; we see that all the time.

“Canadians are wonderful.”He believes they’ll reach their goal,

and every day, he becomes closer to realizing his dream.

TOWN HALL MEETING – UPDATE ON BUS ROUTES, Wednesday August 20, 7 pm, Beaverbrook Library Meeting RoomThe last Town Hall Meeting prior to the Municipal election will provide updates on items underway and a presentation and discussion on the 60, 64 and 68 bus route changes (as modified by OC Transpo up to that date). On August 15, I will meet with OC Transpo to pass on residents’ concerns so that existing riders will continue to have service comparable to what they now have. The new routes will primarily impact Morgan’s Grant, Briarbrook, Brookside, Richardson Ridge/Broughton and Goldridge, providing service to areas that presently have no service and preparing to serve the new park and ride to be built next year at Terry Fox and Innovation.

I will also report on bus changes that will help Arcadia (96A will serve the Huntmar/Palladium intersection at Carling once the Huntmar Bridge is open) and the business community (the 182 extended from Legget to Hines and Innovation).

Other items on the agenda include the opening of the Outlet Mall, status of the Community Design Plan for the expansion lands along March Road, progress on a new public elementary school, the Knudson traffic calming proposal, Expo 55+, Kanata Race Day, protection of the railway right of way through Kanata Lakes, severance of four lots at Klondike and Abbeydale and presentation of new and ongoing development items.

BEAVERBROOK LIBRARY IS OPENIt was a wonderful day last week when our new state-of-the-art library opened for use on Aug 6. It was great to see so many young children having a good time and enjoying both the books and activities. Every reading seat along the front window was taken, laptops and computers were in use, and a combo from Kanata Lakes provided music. The official opening, with placement of a time capsule, will take place on August 23 at 10 am with the Mayor, other Library Trustees (that’s one of my duties) and the public. Let me know of any services or activities that you’d like to find in the library and I’ll discuss these ideas with library staff.

CONSTRUCTION TRAFFIC ON HUNTSVILLEConcerns have been expressed about construction traffic from Richardson Ridge using Huntsville to access Kanata Ave. In response, the project manager for the development has instructed every homebuilder in the community along with the site managers for both the civil and landscaping works to access and exit Huntsville at the Terry Fox end. Please contact me if any trucks continue to go through the community, identifying the vehicle, time and date (e.g. type of truck, company name on truck, license plate if possible).

News - The University of Ot-tawa will establish a satellite campus offering programs in French in Woodstock, Ont.

The university has partnered with the City of Woodstock, which is located west of Toronto, in response to the Ontario Min-istry of Training, Colleges and Universities major capacity ex-pansion request for proposals.

Both the University of Ottawa and La Cité Collégiale has pro-

posed to address the French lan-guage post-secondary education access gap in central southwest-ern Ontario.

The satellite campus will of-fer academic undergraduate and specialized trade programs in French and French immersion.

According to the university, one third of Ontario’s francophone population is located in the centre and southwest of the province, which has been identifi ed by the Offi ce of Francophone Affairs as underserved for post-secondary

education offerings. “As Ontario’s fl agship bilin-

gual research-intensive universi-ty, we are committed to meeting the needs of francophones and francophiles wishing to pursue their postsecondary education in French,” said Allan Rock, presi-dent of the University of Ottawa.

The university said creating access in French will help im-prove student retention rates for francophone and French immer-sion students.

The university and Woodstock are working together to build res-idence spaces as well as ancillary services in the downtown core of

the city. Woodstock Mayor Pat Sobes-

ki said the city is enthusiastic to work in partnership with the uni-versity to bring post-secondary education to the community.

“Downtown Woodstock has all the necessary ingredients to quickly create a dynamic uni-versity campus and city council is excited by this opportunity to further revitalize the downtown,” Sobeski said in a press release.

The establishment of a Uni-versity of Ottawa satellite cam-pus in Woodstock will be subject to approval by the Ontario gov-ernment.

Sports - From scoring to goal-keeping, Greely resident Mollie Eriksson doesn’t sweat the chal-lenge of switching roles from one moment to the next.

That’s one of the reasons her 13- and 14-year-old team-mates on the Ottawa South United Force Black 2000 raced in her direction after she helped them win the quarter-fi nal game against the Burlington Bayhawks on Saturday, Aug. 9.

Moments after scoring what would be the winning point in the penalty shootout in the high-stakes game, the 14-year-old successfully defended her goal.

“When I was taking the shot there was a lot of pressure be-cause I was so nervous,” she said, adding that she was also

trying to shoot against a friend whom she plays with on the pro-vincial team.

“I want her to do well, but I

want to win.”There is also a lot on the line

since the U14 Ottawa South United players are the defending

champions after winning the On-tario Cup last year.

United U14 girls to have hometown advantage in upcoming semifi nals

“In a sense it was like clash of the titans,” said Eriksson’s mother, Tracy Vaillancourt, who is a technical coach with the Ottawa South United club. “It’s really nice to see two competent keepers doing great.”

The last time the team went up against the Bayhawks was in league play in mid-July in Ottawa. The score ended up tied 1-1.

The teams again tied the score 1-1 during Saturday’s game, but the pen-alty shootout gave the Ottawa South United team the opportunity to ad-vance to semifi nal play, which happens at the Terry Fox Athletic Facility in two weeks.

The penalty shootout was a nail-biter. While parents and supporters cheered on players throughout regular play, the shootout was a silent experi-ence.

“You could hear a pin drop,” Eriks-son said.

Players from each team took fi ve turns shooting against the opposing net. When it was Eriksson’s turn, she kicked hard to the right of the net-minder.

“When the ref whistled, we all just sprinted towards each other and there was a big dog pile, and everyone was laughing and smiling,” she said. “We’ve been working so hard forever and we all had our minds set on this one goal.”

It can be a gamble allowing keepers

to make a shot in this situation because if they are unsuccessful, it can derail their confi dence in defending their net after such a setback.

“I think the gamble paid off,” Vail-lancourt said. “When I saw her score the goal I felt really confi dent about what she was going to do next. I had a good feeling that the adrenaline of that success was going to translate into making a nice save on the next kick.”

Her daughter didn’t have time to celebrate after scoring.

Burlington had one last shot and chance to stay in the game, but the Ot-tawa South United goaltender dove to the left and kept it from nearing the

net.“I just had to do a low dive,” Eriks-

son said, adding that she and her team-mates really celebrated at that point.

The Ottawa South team is scheduled to compete against Whitby in Ottawa in two weeks.

“I think the semifi nals will be cut-throat as will the fi nals,” Vaillancourt said, adding the four remaining teams are formidable. “These are the best of the best so it’s going to be very good.”

If successful, Ottawa South United’s team will advance to the fi nals and at-tempt to defend their provincial cham-pionship status in September.

If they win the Ontario Cup, they will go on to compete at the national level in Prince Edward Island later this fall.

Eriksson is no stranger to fi erce competition on the soccer fi eld.

She earned a place on the provincial team earlier this year. And in January, she became the youngest keeper, at the age of 13, to train in the Regional Ex-celeration Centre out of Toronto, which is made up of top-level U20 women players.

Despite the fi erce competition that is in store for the Ottawa South United team, Eriksson doesn’t plan to let the pressure get to her.

“I just like to focus on the game and think in the moment, just let it all hap-pen,” she said. “So if you live in the moment of the game, you enjoy it more and then you concentrate and you play better.”

News - Mayor Jim Watson doesn’t want Ottawa to lose momentum on the next phase of its light-rail project after the downtown line is done in 2018.

As the city marked a mile-stone of excavating more than half the material it must remove to build the 2.5-ki-lometre portion of the line that’s underground, politi-cians turned their attention to the future.

Premier Kathleen Wynne, who was on hand for a tour of the tunnel, reiterated that Ontario is committed to building the next phase of LRT, which would bring rail transit to Orléans, Bayshore and Bowesville. Last fall, Watson announced the plan for the next stage of light rail, which would add another 35 kilometres of new rail with 19 new stations at a cost of $2.5 billion.

“We’ve already commit-ted to work with the city on

Phase 2,” the premier said. “I’m a big believer in that kind of long-term planning. You can’t build this kind of infrastructure overnight. You have to have a plan in place. To its credit, Ottawa has got a plan in place.”

But the federal govern-ment isn’t committing to anything yet, said Orléans MP Royal Galipeau.

“We haven’t received a plan for Phase 2 yet, and when it comes, I’m sure that we’ll be at the table,” he said during a news conference fol-lowing the tunnel tour. “I’m not sure that we are going to underwrite everybody’s plans, because everybody wants more money than the taxpayers can afford.”

Last fall, Watson said Ot-tawa’s $975-million ask of the federal government rep-resents two per cent of the federal infrastructure fund - less than the city’s propor-tion of the country’s popula-tion.

SPLURGE 7

HOW DID YOU START YOUR

BUSINESS?

I’ve had a life-long passion for interior decorating.

I began my studies at Algonquin College. Following

these studies, I tended to my family and my career

in the financial industry. Years later, I returned to

my studies in the Residential Décor Program to do

what I enjoy doing best: helping people discover the

heart of their home.

WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE PRODUCT

OR SERVICE?

I have everything I need in hand when I arrive

at your home, and I am fully bilingual. When I

arrive, so does the excitement of creating a space

that is uniquely your own. We can discuss your

needs and ideas to create a design you love from

concept to final installation. Best of all, you can

be sure your project will have a happy ending

because I personally execute all the phases of the

project to ensure quality workmanship. From my

initial consultation, to product selection, to final

installation, I handle every detail. I am a true end-

to-end decorating service.

WHAT ARE PEOPLE SURPRISED TO

KNOW? I find clients are most surprised to learn how many

options are available to them in their own home,

and that working with an interior decorator doesn’t

have to be expensive. First, when working with me,

my initial design consultation is complimentary.

Second, because I work with a wide variety of

products and suppliers, I can help them determine

a budget and price range that is comfortable for

them. Once that is established, my clients can relax

and know that everything I show them will fit within

the budget for their project. They often comment on

how much more warm and functional their spaces

are after incorporating some of my ideas into their

home. They are also pleasantly surprised to learn

how affordable decorating can be, especially with

the right advice.

WHAT IS YOUR INSPIRATION TO BE

THE BEST?

I pride myself on being a designer who is easy

to work with and who can make the most of any

budget.

My clients appreciate the fact that I decorate to suit

their lifestyles and expand on their own ideas. My

goal is to always make decorating a fun experience.

Together, we can make your dream space a reality.

FAVOURITE SAYING OR QUOTE?

“Your Dream Home made affordable”

My consultation is complimentary. It will be my

pleasure to visit you in your home. Creating

beautiful homes, one room at a time.

Lifestyle - Children who are being rejected by their peers are going through a terrible ordeal. Isolated, insulted and ostracized, they often suffer in silence, and the consequences can be dramatic. It is never easy for parents to help a child who is being rejected, but it is possible.

Being different in some way is sometimes the cause be-hind this rejection. At other times, there doesn’t appear to be any logical explanation. Shyness, a nervous tic, speech diffi culties, obesity, or even having braces can be enough to set in motion the victimization process. Sometimes, all it takes is for children to ignore being made fun of for the rejection to start. And yet, some children who stutter or who are obese will never experience rejection. Children are best prepared by receiving help in devel-oping a certain amount of independence and social skills, which allow them to cope with their differences. Parents who help their children from a young age to develop social skills are preparing them to be better able to defend them-selves without resorting to violence (but rather through discussion or humour, for example). This also helps them to build their self-confi dence. Parents should listen to how their children have suffered and, above all, take them seriously. The next step is to tell their teachers; school staff may be able to correct the situ-ation through a class discussion where everyone can ex-press themselves without fear of being judged. It is vital to encourage rejected children to talk about their experience in order for them to escape their isola-tion.

How to help children who have been rejectedLifestyle - Why not organize a back to school party this year? Turning the fi rst day of school into a festive occasion is a great way to start off the new school year on the right foot.

You probably already know that eating breakfast is vital for energy and for in-creasing one’s capacity to learn. Make your back-to-school breakfast a colourful affair. Set the table with fresh fl owers and new placemats, and concoct a healthy breakfast that’s a bit out of the ordinary. If your children aren’t hungry, a smoothie and a small homemade fat-free muffi n are easy to manage, even for small stomachs that are feeling queasy with stress. Before leaving home, be sure to take the traditional photograph at the front door. The idea may seem old-fashioned to you, but these annual photos will become great memories for the entire family. Create an album just for these back-to-school photos and in a few years time you’ll all have fun looking through it. When your children get home after their fi rst day back at school, give them a surprise, a little reward to make them feel better after what can often be a stressful

day. You don’t need to spend a fortune to put smiles on their faces – serving their fa-vourite meal or taking everybody out to a restaurant is a great way to fi nish off the day.

Above all, this is an occasion to spend time together as a family, a moment to support each other in making the peaceful transition from the quiet of the summer to the regular school year routine.

Great cupcakesStudents and teachers from Algonquin College’s culinary and hospitality programs were on hand to make desserts for the Summer Harvest Gar-den Party in support of the Ottawa Humane Society at city hall on Sun-day, Aug. 10. From left, culinary instructor Catherine Beddall, culinary students Vanessa Agustin and Jade Schoenfeld, hospitality co-ordinator Wes Wilkinson, culinary students Mandy De Geits and Dustin Lacrosse and hospitality student Meghan McAuley present their cupcake cre-ations. Nearly 250 guests dined on the creations of 17 of the city’s top chefs, who donated their time to the 14th annual event in support of the animals at the shelter. The event raised $42,500 for the agency.

After the tunnel tour, the mayor said it is important the city not lose the momentum and it has gained during the fi rst phase of LRT, which includes above-ground portions to stretch the line from Tunney’s Pas-ture in the west to Blair Station at its east terminus.

“We don’t want to lose the skilled workers, the knowledge, the equip-ment and the momentum that we gained with Phase 1,” Watson said.

“I don’t want to see them leave when we take that fi rst train ride in 2018 and they’re off because we’re still haggling with the federal gov-ernment and the provincial govern-ment to get on with Phase 2,” Wat-son said.

The city isn’t ready to submit a formal funding request to the upper levels of government – that won’t come until after an environmental assessment study is completed in late 2015 or early 2016, Watson said. But he’ll be working to build the case to federal offi cials leading up to that point.

We need to make sure that Mr. Galipeau s constituents have equal access to light rail at Place D Orléans and we need to make sure that people in the south end and west end can join in on what I think is going to be a remarkable transit system.

“We obviously have to sell our case because we’re going to be competing with every jurisdiction in Canada for those dollars,” Wat-son said. “But we think being the nation’s capital, we have our act together.”

TUNNEL PROGRESS

The premier, mayor and offi cials toured the 441 metres of tunnel that the roadheader dubbed “Jawbreak-er” has chewed through between the west portal at LeBreton Flats and the Lyon Street station.

The event marked the Rideau

Transit Group surpassing the 50 per cent mark for the amount of materi-al excavated from the tunnel. About 55,000 cubic metres of aggregate has been removed from the tunnel – enough to fi ll approximately 23 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The material is sold to a contrac-tor to ship it away and turn it into a product – likely concrete.

That tunnel is now being expand-ed into the cavern that will form the Lyon station, said Steve Cripps, di-rector of the city’s rail implementa-tion offi ce.

About 250 metres of tunnel has been dug from the central portal at Kent and Queen streets, Cripps said, heading both east and west from that site.

Digging at the eastern portal is now north of Laurier Avenue and into bedrock near the University of Ottawa, Cripps said. Tunneling on that side ran into trouble in Febru-ary, when part of the tunnel ceiling collapsed due to loose soil in an old, undocumented construction pit. Af-ter shoring up the ground there, tun-neling resumed and has progressed about 115 metres.

The three roadheader diggers can each plow through about fi ve to 5.5 metres of rock each day.

News - You can smell the garlic being harvested even before you see the fi eld. At a distance of about 50 metres, the scent is unmistakeable.

Silver Spring Farm volun-teers turned out in large num-bers to pick this year’s crop – about 46,000 garlic bulbs – on July 28.

SALES THIS WEEK

Sales of the bulbs are ex-pected to start this weekend at the farm, located at the cor-ner of Richmond and Baseline roads. The proceeds help fund the work of the Ottawa-Car-leton Association for Persons with Developmental Disabili-ties.

The vast majority of those harvesting this year’s crop came from local Mormon churches, and others were friends and family of people served by the association.

BOOK NOW!

LandscapingContinued from page 50

That’s part of the fun and challenge that come with two new portable bowling sets that Walkley Bowling Centre is now planning to loan out for free to schools and associations through the Heritage Canada-sponsored Learn to Bowl pro-gram.

“It can become a lifetime sport,” said Yusak, who took over full ownership of the south Ottawa business in May. “Look at the ages of the people bowl-ing behind me.”

Some of those who bowl in Yusak’s leagues are in their 90s.

The goal of the bowling-to-go program is to bring fi ve-pin bowling to Canadian schools to encourage children to be physi-cally active.

The portable bowling sets, which were acquired by Walk-ley Bowling Centre earlier this year, each come with fi ve pins, a six-metre bowling carpet and soft, weighted balls, as well as instruction binders.

“This book’s been put to-gether by Bowl Canada to basi-cally make it really easy on the teachers,” Yusak said, thumbing through the thick binder. “It walks them through all these different lessons that they can do with the kids.”

One of the sets has been loaned out once to a daycare, and before school starts in

September, Yusak is in the pro-cess of putting together a street team.

The team, made up of a man-ager and two youths hired from Yusak’s youth league, will de-liver the portable sets and teach children and adults bowling techniques and rules.

“I want to not only be able to lend it out, but take it out,” he said.

“I like the idea of kids teaching kids. Kids listen to other kids, more than they do adults.”

Bowling is not only enjoy-able, and features a social ele-ment, he said, it is a low-impact

sport that stretches muscles and is easy on the joints.

“It’s a very fl uid motion when they’re bowling,” said Yusak.

It also engages the mind since it requires focus and concentra-tion to hit the right combination of pins, if not all of them.

“The focus required is a little harder than people think, to aim the ball, throw the ball prop-erly,” the owner said. “You’ve got to hit the pocket at the exact right spot.”

Also new this year, in June Walkley Bowling Centre launched an in-house Learn to Bowl program on Saturday mornings from 11 a.m. to noon. Children ages four to 12 can learn the sport for free from an accredited bowling coach.

Up to 36 children can partici-pate each week. Pre-registration by Friday at 4 p.m. is required.

It’s meant to entice kids to get away from their computers, smartphones, televisions and video games and learn a sport

that was once very popular, Yu-sak said.

In 1988, more than 200,000 children were participating in youth bowling leagues across Canada.

“Now it’s about 76,000, so we’ve lost 150,000 kids. Where are they?” Yusak said.

He remembers a time when there were so many young league bowlers at Walkley Bowling Centre, which opened in 1979, that 30 lanes were fi lled early Saturday mornings. Then another wave of kids would come in a couple of hours later for more league bowling and fi ll three-quarters of the lanes.

“I want those kids back,” Yu-sak said.

To sign out the bowling sets or register for free Saturday morning lessons, call 613-521-0132 or email [email protected].

Based on comments received from residents, I have requested Traffic Operations review several locations in our community for improvements to the safe flow of traffic, cyclists and pedestrians so more changes will be coming. Thank you for all the great comments received on the new traffic lights at McCurdy / Tamblyn at Castlefrank. A common question has been why not a roundabout. The answer is there was not enough land available to install the current approved size roundabout. The city is working with experts to design a smaller roundabout that could be used in residential areas in the future and I am monitoring their progress. Another question has been on the paver stones that were removed to install the sensors. They will be reinstalled later this fall.I have also asked Public Works to repair the pavers at the intersection of Castlefrank at Aird near the Wave Pool and hope this work can be done quickly.Community Events: For a listing of community events, please visit my website: www.councillorallanhubley.ca. Association members get their hands dirty every October, when about a quarter of all the garlic grown is broken down into individual cloves that are planted for the following year.

“Everybody does their bit,” said Bernie Murphy, a long-time volun-teer who spent July 28 preparing a barn for the arrival of the massive harvest.

The garlic bulbs are dried, cleaned and graded in the barn – a process that takes about 10 days. The best of the crop is braided.

This year’s Silver Spring garlic is a little behind schedule due to iffy weather, and the bulbs – like most across the region – are a little small-er than those stemming from ideal springs and summers.

That doesn’t mean the bulbs are any easier to harvest. It takes a de-cent tug to get a bulb to emerge into daylight.

Among the 80-plus volunteers expected to clear the fi eld by dusk on July 28 were Rebecca and Dan Whelan of Barrhaven, and their two young sons.

“It’s our third year,” Rebecca said of the work at Silver Spring. “The kids love it.”

Dan added that they encourage their sons to “do something good for other people.”

“They’re doing it for a good cause,” he said.

Volunteers give more than 4,000 hours each year to the garlic project. They come from across the city and

many are members of• The Church of Jesus Christ of

Latter -Day Saints. • Sir Guy Carleton High School.• Genband.• Algonquin College.• Health Canada.• Deloitte Canada.• Henschel Business Services.Sales at the farm were expected to

begin Aug. 14.
