Drama Festival On 9th August, 9 Year 11 students and 2 Year 9 students represented Kanahooka High School at the regional Drama Festival. It was held at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre in Wollongong. The day consisted of early morning rehearsal and a late night performance. The play, “Us and Them” was a success, and all the students had a great time and gained acting experience. We learnt the values of team work and self discipline, and were a great support for each other. Although there were a few forgetful minds on stage, the performance went great and received some positive feedback. The Year 11 Drama class would like to thank Mr Philpot for the hard work and dedication he gave us to get to the Drama Festival. All students put in their best effort in preparation for the Drama Festival, going through a rigorous audition process. They are hopeful of making it to the State Drama festival. The fantastic cast included; Tahlia Simpson, Carly Robinson, Kiara Jouannet, Joshua Heck, Shakira Martin, Taylor Macgregor, Tiana Azzopardi, Samantha Butler, Brittany Green, Emma Koplick, Matthew Gencevski and Mitchell McArdle. By Tahlia Simpson and Carly Robinson. YEAR 11 LAPTOP UPGRADES All Year 11 laptops MUST be handed in ASAP! They MUST be handed in even if they are broken or not being used. Safe People, Safe Places Following reported incidents in the Illawarra region of school aged children being approached by strangers, Police are appealing to parents to discuss “Safe people, safe places” messages with their children. These include; avoid walking on their own, walk near busy roads, use paths where there are lots of people, make sure your parents or another adult knows where you are at all times, and always walk straight home or to the place you are going. Know where the safe places are - a shop, service station, Library, Police station or school. Don’t talk to people you don’t know, and don’t get into a car with someone you don’t know. If a car stops beside you and you don’t know the person, keep walking and use your mobile to call 000. Tell them you are scared. A Message from our Library The Library has been very busy this year, especially as the new laptops have rolled out. Students have also been enjoying the Library space each recess and lunch. Year 8 are still enjoying the benefits of learning digital citizenship and computing skills in ICT. We have also recently added a huge collection of books kindly donated by Mr Randolph Mar and the Chinese Embassy. These books were donated as part of our Asia Literacy program. We are constantly purchasing new and exciting books in the spirit of Book Week. Seniors may soon enjoy a “Seniors Only Lunch” in the Library and possibly some relaxation sessions to assist in their studying of the HSC. The Midnight Zoo (Book Review) I've been looking forward to this, like sitting down to a lovely delicious meal. Except this is a meal for my brain and imagination. Hartnett is clearly my favourite Aussie writer, and I don't think she disappoints in this novel. This one is up for the CBCA Older Readers Award, and I sin- cerely hope it wins. There is war in the world. It's not clear initially which war; that becomes more evident later on. We watch as Andrej and Tomas with their baby sister, pick their way through a destroyed village. They are young, alone, hungry and desperately frightened. As they travel, they stumble upon an unexpected and untouched place; a place which will challenge them, remind them and ultimately, free them. As always, Hartnett has written this novel beautifully. I think this book would be great book club fodder, because even though it is clearly written for YA's, it deals with adult and philosophical themes. I also think that this novel would not be for everyone. There is definitely a section towards the end where Hartnett lets her imagination take flight and the result is extraordinary and it would only really appeal to those who like to suspend their disbelief or cynicism at the drop of a hat. I do, and did with relish. This is a beautifully written book, and highly recommended to those readers who have sophisticated tastes, or yearn for something a little different. South Coast SSA Secondary Athletics 2011 The South Coast SSA Secondary Athletics Carnival for 2011 was held at Canberra on 29th July. Rebecca Hockey and Gareth Jenkins are to be commended for their admirable performances. Other KHS students who performed well in Long Jump, Javelin, Shot- put or Discus were Reece Armstrong, Joshua Bell, Joshua Childs, Breanna Kill, Tori Vincent and Thomas Walsh. Both Joshua Childs and Thomas Walsh will be going onto the CHS Athletics in the near future. We will certainly keep you posted on that event! Southern Stars At present 22 students from Year 7 to Year 12 have been involved in Southern Stars rehearsals which culminate in the final performances on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th August. The costumes are busily being prepared and the dances are looking amazing. Students from Kanahooka will be involved in five dance numbers, including Katy Perry's “Fireworks” and Lady Ga Ga's “Telephone”. Year 7 Enrolments 2012 If you have enrolled your child to start at KHS for 2012, we would like to request that you bring in your child's enrolment form ASAP, as we are trying to finalise our student numbers for next year to assist us in our programing. Cake stall On Wednesday 10 th August Year 11 held a Hot Chocolate and Cake stall to raise money for the “KidzWish Foundation”. Rachel Bush was participating in a quest to raise funds that go towards granting wishes for children with disabilities. Many of our students and community members benefit from the great work they do. Unfortunately Rachel did not go on to the next stage of the quest. However, we decided to follow through with the fundraiser and will donate the funds to the foundation regardless. Many thanks to students and families that donated cakes and yummy slices to make this a success, and a huge thank you to students and staff members for supporting Rachel. We raised the magnificent sum of $218. Well done! The Midnight Zoo (Book Review)

I've been looking forward to this, like sitting down to a lovely delicious meal. Except this is a meal for my brain and imagination. Hartnett is clearly my favourite Aussie writer, and I don't think she disappoints in this novel. This one is up for the CBCA Older Readers Award, and I sin-
