Dear Parents and Guardians
It is great to be back at Kambrya College following my
four week stint as a Senior Advisor at the South
Eastern Victoria Regional Office. The opportunity to
experience the regional perspective in our education
system was most valuable. My main responsibility
was to act as Senior Advisor to the Southern
Peninsula schools from Frankston down to Sorrento.
It was also fortuitous to be working at Region at the
time when significant change was underway in the
areas of Principal and Teacher performance and
development as well as the roll out of the “Victoria. A
Learning Community – Action Plan”. As I had the
opportunity to visit schools and take in the regional
perspective, one point became further confirmed in my
mind – Kambrya College is one of the terrific schools
in the region. We have an orderly and well managed
school. Students have a sense of purpose and can
access the pathways they desire. Our teachers plan
their lessons and think about using the most effective
teaching strategies for their students. There is really
so much to be proud of. So it is great to be back.
I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Joanne
Wastle, Nalini Naidu and Keith Perry for taking on
the leadership of the college in my absence.
Term 4
For all students and teachers, Term 4 is a challenging
period of time:
Year 12 classes finish on 23 October

Final Examinations for students in Years 7 to 11
take place from 1 to 7 November
VCE Examinations commence on Wednesday 30
October
The new 2014 school year (Commencement)
begins on 12 November for a four week period.
Please note that attendance at school is
compulsory for all students at this time
The Activities Program begins on Monday 9
December
Clearly, all students need to focus strongly on
finishing all course work and preparing thoroughly for

week intensive commencement program takes place
where students have the opportunity to make a great
start to their 2014 studies.
My best wish to all students, teachers and parents for
a most successful term 4.

Year 8 Tasmania Camp News
During the last week of term 3 (16th & 17th September) two camps of 40 Year 8 students
headed of to Tasmania to experience the Apple Isle.
For many of the students the trip was met with much excitement, and trepidation as for
many it was their first plane ride.
Over the course of the 4 day trip students visited the Cataract Gorge in Launceston,
Hobart, The Port Arthur Historic Penitentiary – during the day and again for a ghost tour
at night, Bruny Island - by Ferry and of course the infamous Cadbury Factory in Claremont
– for many a highlight of the trip!
The camp was based at the Woodfield Centre, and by night students sharpened their trivia
skills, danced the night away with a disco in the chapel, or reflected by the fire.
All staff and students thoroughly enjoyed their time in Tasmania, and have some wonder-
ful stories and experiences to remember the trip for many years to come.
Thanks to Michelle Pezzimenti, Hamish Moffett, Nick Chudoschnik, Neil Paterson and Jo
Chitty for attending camp with a great group of year 8 students!

Sister School Cultural Visits
Japan A contingent of 15 students participated in a two week cultural visit to Japan from Monday 16th September to
Monday 30th September. Students were escorted by Ms Wastle and Ms Hood. They were welcomed at
Kambrya College’s sister school in Osaka and into the homes of host families for four days, during which time
they participated in daily student life and enjoyed many different activities organised by Sakuranomiya High
School. This included participation in a traditional Tea Ceremony, Calligraphy, Japanese cooking, English
classes and afterschool activities. At every challenge the students made us proud; each bravely giving a
speech they had written in Japanese in front of all students and staff from Sakuranomiya High School
The experience was a culinary delight with meals consisting of regional specialties such as Hiroshima style
Okonomiyaki (Japanese savoury pancakes), octopus dumplings and natto (fermented soybeans). The group
visited cultural and historically important sites such as the Hiroshima Peace Park, Osaka Castle and the
Golden Pavilion in Kyoto. The students embraced new experiences and took every opportunity to practice their
Japanese whilst shopping and conversing with Japanese school children and local community members. They
were fortunate to see two Geisha in Kyoto and were harassed by some hungry deer in Nara, the first capital of
Japan.
All participants bring home many fond memories of their experiences; both cultural and linguistic.
Additionally the trip provided opportunity for the Kambrya College students to work collaboratively and
develop new friendships.
Germany On Sunday the fifteenth of September ten students, Ms Naidu and Ms Duffus left to fly to Frankfurt
Germany, where the group was met by their host families and two teachers from Altkönigschule in
Kronberg. After settling into their new homes, students were quickly introduced to life in Germany.
Attendance at school, a get together at a local youth club and a visit to the Opel Zoo soon ensured that
students and teachers were made to feel welcome. On the Wednesday students experienced the efficiency of
the German Bundesbahn and the beautiful landscape of Hessen with a trip to Rüdesheim. The group took a
gondola ride up the mountain, over beautiful vineyards and then wandererd up to Assmannshausen for a
chairlift ride down to the banks of the Rhine, followed by a Rhine river cruise back to Rüdesheim. A typical
German lunch and some shopping for souvenirs was the perfect way to finish the day.
Students experienced many different events and one of the highlights of their trip for some was the
attendance of a European League Soccer Match in Frankfurt, where the local heroes, Frankfurt Eintracht,
beat the opposition convincingly. A visit to the Frankfurt Motor show was also a highlight, as was a tour
around the old part of Frankfurt, a visit to local galleries and experiencing the local nightlife in
Schaffenhausen.
Following a typical German bar-b-cue, and emotional farewells from their hosts, Berlin was another highlight.
A visit to the Alexanderplatz and views from the TV tower enabled students to see a panoramic view of Berlin
and a walking tour highlighted the historical sights of Berlin. Madame Tussauds Berlin and shopping along
the famous Ku’damm, were other highlights.
Anyone who is interested in participating in future cultural exchanges in 2014 to China, Japan or Germany,
please contact either Ms Kylie Williams or Ms Joanne Wastle.

Air Pollution and Asthma
School age students and young children with asthma can often have breathing difficulties when exposed to air
pollution. Air
pollution can occur:
Outdoors – smog (made up of nitrogen oxides and ozone), bushfires, cigarette smoke.
Indoors – formaldehydes/resins (some building materials), volatile organic compounds (found in paints, furni-
ture, cleaning
products), cigarette smoke, poorly maintained gas appliances.
The most important way to reduce the impact of air pollution on your child’s asthma to avoid the pollutant com-
pletely if possible.
Stay indoors on high smog days, close windows and external doors
Make sure you have a bush-fire plan if you live in a bushfire prone area
Make sure your child’s asthma is well controlled and that you and your child know what to do if their asth-
ma gets worse
Make sure your gas appliances are serviced regularly by a registered or licensed gasfitter and that there is
adequate ventilation in rooms containing gas appliances
Choose building items, furniture, paints and wood items that are certified to emit low levels of formalde-
hyde and volatile
organic compounds.
