CURRENT MARKET REPORT
Hopefully everyone is staying warm and able to keep their water bowls open through this cold snap. In the markets this week, surprisingly the cut out price seems to be staying fair-ly consistent, with fluctuations of a couple dollars higher or lower each week, but overall, the median price remains steady. The boxed beef movement remains brisk as consumers are still willing to pay up for their favourite protein. Carcass weights continue to be higher than a year ago which is increasing the tonnage of beef, but on the positive side the Pack-ers seem to be moving the meat, while at the same time live finished cattle prices continue to rise. The Feedlots are still hoping there is a day where the packer will share their posi-tive margins so they can stay in business another year. Feeder cattle prices remain elevated as everyone is watching the futures climb in the second half of the year. Is it just money managers pushing the index higher, or will we really see that kind of demand come Q3 & Q4? Time will tell. Grass cattle fever is hitting many of the local markets already, and we are seeing a lot of these 550 plus pound steers bring 2.30 and heifers at the same weight above 2.00! Grain prices continue to weigh on the feedlot operator's minds. Keep your eyes open because as the cost of gain continues to rise, it will be the one mitigating factor keep-ing prices from shooting into the stratosphere this fall! Cordy Cox GM BCL
