Hello.I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as a creative professional by offering some insights, both in prose and visually, into my life and career. The following pages do offer a good idea as to what I'm all about, and I hope you enjoy thumbing through them.

Although, please keep in mind that I've got well over twenty more years of this stuff up my sleeve, and a lifetime more waiting to be thought up. More in-depth stories, and I don’t even know how many more concepts are just a dial tone or click away. Don’t hesitate to call for more information.

What drives me

Since I was a kid, life itself was visual for me. If I saw, imagined, or even felt anything personally intriguing, I drew it with my crayons. I had then, and have still a true passion for graphic design and the visual arts. And I apply that energy to everything I do professionally and personally. With that, I really do aspire to work in environments and with colleagues that appreciate the value of this kind of devotion. Because, I feel that level of passion can't help but have a positive effect on any communication plan, and any client’s bottom line.

Things I’ve done

I have over twenty years of award winning design experience under my belt just itching to take on the next challenge. Although that experience has been primarily in the print world, working for a global brand has provided many opportunities to reach beyond specialities, and well into the world of brand management.

In my early years as a Freelance Graphic Designer, I specialized in print and the creation of identities for a number of small businesses too numerous to recall. From business packages, posters, flyers, brochures and countless logo designs, I took them all on from concept to press. I prided myself in never missing a deadline, or going over budget.

It was with Rockwell International, and later Boeing that I grew up as a designer. I began early on at Rockwell as a contract Computer Graphic Artist, and soon after hired on as a Graphic Designer, where my primary duties were print and exhibit related. Although the position was technically production, the conceptual aspects grew exponentially with each successful project.

My position at Rockwell earned me an invitation, after the Boeing acquisition, to be part of the Boeing corporate identity program. My involvement included a seat on the steering committee and later a membership in the corporate identity’s core group. My commitment grew into an appointment to Visual Identity Focal, RAA for the Southern California region.

As time passed, I also evolved from designer to a senior position, and later to Art Director for Boeing in Anaheim. Again, my responsibilities were conception, production and development of print and exhibit materials in support of marketing and communications. However, clients often looked to me to develop concepts in other mediums, like electronic media and even environmental design. I became fair game for anything creative. However, brand management and print remained my primary responsibilities.

Highlights at Boeing have included being a key member of the design team for the Paris Air Show and the Farnborough International Air Show for several years running. I also had the opportunity to be the design lead for the Paris, Farnbor-ough, Dubai and Asian Aerospace (Singapore) air shows for a season. Cool beans!

Where I’ve done them

The Boeing Company | 12/00 to present | Art Director, Regional Visual Identity Focal, Senior Graphic Designer

The Boeing Company | 12/96 – 12/00 | Senior Graphic Designer

Rockwell International | 3/94 – 12/96 | Graphic Designer

Kevin A. Mau Illustration & Design | 6/82 – 12/00 | Freelance Graphic Designer, Illustrator, Consultant

The Creative tools I use

⚀ Apple Macintosh | My first one was a Mac IIvx. ⚀ QuarkXPress 6.1 | I was devout since 3.2, until InDesign shined.

⚀ Photoshop CS3 | In my blood since version 2.5. ⚀ Bryce 6 | I learned to make engineering scenarios look cool.

⚀ Illustrator CS3 | Bézier crazy since version 5. ⚀ PowerPoint | Look, I can use it ... but I am a designer.

⚀ InDesign CS3 | Hey, it’s how things get done. ⚀ Traditional Art | Since I could hold a crayon.

Some places I’ve been seen and noted

Guest lecturer | I was invited to speak on illustration and design issues at Chapman University in Orange, California, and have been invited back on several occasions to give portfolio reviews and guidance to graduating design students.

Campbell Chamber of Commerce logo | The logo I designed received national recognition in the Chamber Executive Network (March 1995, Vol. 11, No. 10) as one of the ten logos in the nation to best depict the spirit and image of its respective city.

Boeing International Media Tour 2002 | My press kit design earned Award of Excellence in the 2002-2003 STC Competition.

Associations | I am a proud member, and former chapter board member, of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA). I'm also a long time member of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP).

My educational base

Masters Institute | Communication Arts | Curriculum consisted of intensive training in the latest advances in the graphic design field. Detailed areas of study covered the traditional graphic arts, design and computer graphics, including multi-media and animation on the Macintosh. Dean’s List.

San José City College and Evergreen Valley College | Political Science | General education towards a major in political science. Explorations in expressive drawing.

Varian Associates | Career Training | Completed courses in management training (Boomerang II), EEOP/Affirmative Action, team building, quality improvement and safety procedures (OSHA).

Kick-off poster for a Safety Health and Environmental Affairs (SHEA) awareness campaign.

I took the client’s tagline, SHEA...protecting the air, earth, water and you, and developed this concept with the intent of instilling the protective nature of SHEA in the minds of campus employees.

I conceived the title and the respective image, art directed the photo shoot, digitally manipulated the photo, and performed all of the production work on this piece.

Farnborough International Airshow 2006

Although I was not the Art Director on this campaign, I developed the design from an image provided from the Art Director. A special play with metallic inks really made these pieces sing. The final look and feel became the standard for everything produced for the event.

The design also became the look of Boeing for the 2007 air show season, including this year’s Paris Air Show.

Connexion by BoeingSM

As an Art Director with Boeing, I have many opportunities to work closely with the company’s advertising agencies. Boeing uses agencies like Foote Cone and Belding, SHR Perceptual Management, Meta4 and a few others for key programs, and special projects. Connexion by Boeing was one such program. SHR created the identity for Connexion by Boeing, and I teamed with them and our internal copywriters to create the collateral based on that identity. This piece is an example of one of the first product roll-out pieces.

The Portal

This was a co-branded piece that had to be approved by committees at both companies (Boeing and QinetiQ) on two different continents with two distinctly different cultures, for an extemely complex program that is near to impossible to illustrate in one image. This project (designed for the European market) truly was a study in diplomacy and compromise. And for a project that put my people skills to the test in the extreme, the clients thought the final product turned out quite nice in both messaging in its visual appeal. They were quite pleased ... quite, as they would say across the pond.

Boeing Community Involvement — 2000 Event Calendar

Many times over the years, clients came to us with nothing more than a handful of pictures, a Microsoft Word document full of text, and a task from their management to deliver the content to the masses in a professional manner. It was up to us to teach them how to organize their purpose and what they wanted to say, so we could build a communication that best delivered their messages to their respective audience ... Oh yes, and at a price they could afford. This is an example of just such a project.

“We've got this thing ... do you think you mock something up for us?”

Working for a company like Boeing offered many opportunities to create outside any sense of specialty. These are a couple examples of how I became fair game for anything creative. Although my area of expertise is primarily print and brand man-agement, I also have designed seven lobbies, an occasional exhibit structure, several memorial plaques, believe it or not ... a missile launcher, and too many other odds and ends to recall.
