“Posts” by Benjamin Lake

Class of 2015

A small man with a thick southern drawl stood in the desert with a shovel and several sticks in hand. The moon was cres-cent and gave little light, and what gave light was the horn containing fire resting by him in the dust. He wore an oilcloth and a pipe rested in his teeth. The sky was painted with millions of white dots, and some fell, but the man paid them no mind. Men behind him laughed and gathered around a fire in the distance. When their bottles ran dry, they gathered the coils of wire and followed the man. There were dozens, perhaps hundreds of sticks poking from the ground in a single file, dividing the land.

As the man progressed, he looked up and saw a young man sitting in the clay earth. Even in the dark, he could see that the other man's skin was tan and wore rags on his back. He was distant, and be-hind him was a town set ablaze. Neither men said a word as they stared, and the tan skinned man looked with a long gaze. The fence builder stood with his horn, spat in the dirt, and looked down at his hole. After minutes of staring, the fence builder rammed a pole into the earth, and moved on to the next.

“The Candy Bowl” by Alex Cox

Class of 2015

The candy bowl, full to the brim

sat wobbly on the table's rim.

The craft table it was,

with arts and glues

holding markers of reds and blues.

The teacher walks in saying,

"come kids, lets create!"

as she sets down a pound of clay to reshape.

But the table was too weak

and it started to squeak.

Alas, the table reached it's peak,

and it broke and released a stream of sweets.

The glue bottles burst

making the glue transverse

covering all children,

making it worse!

Candy flies through the air

as the children repeat,

"the candy we eat, so sweet! so sweet!"

The teachers, now dazed,

as the children graze,

"what will we do, covered in glue?"

With wrappers stuck all over their dappers,

the children now drew, as if they were mappers!

They roam in their herd chasing the birds

making their laughter very well heard.

“Best Moments” by Elizabeth Velasquez-Carabello

Class of 2015

It’s raining as the wind blows smooth

He falls on his weak knees

Her tears are shaken up at noon.

There is suddenly a silent breeze

She cries in the pouring rain

The air becomes as cold as night

He screams in the agony and pain

There is no more light.

His heart becomes a block of ice

The rain comes down like sharp blades

She can’t bear to see the sight

It hits his skin and ricochets

She runs to him as he falls

His shadow is just standing there

He lays there as it stands tall

He takes his last breath as he crawls

She pulls him up off the ground

She looks up at the sky

Rain stops falling all around

She prays that it was her that died.

“The Untouchable”

By An Anonymous Kaleidoscope Member

It was a sunny afternoon on the endless horizon,

and all the fishing rods were hooked with bait. As the

day went on, there were no bites. Then, all of a sud-

den, a fish bit the rod and the battle had begun. The

captain came down from the bridge and took the rod

into the fighting chair. He reeled it right up next to

the boat when the tension on the line suddenly

stopped. The line was brought into the boat, but only

half of the fish came with it. In the background, there

was a splash, everyone then looked to the side and

saw a Blue Marlin jumping out of the water, with the

other half of the hooked fish in its mouth. It ate the

fish right before it was reeled in. a great fish was lost

that day, but an even greater one was seen.

“One Day I Will Become a Tree” By Celeste Cheng

Class of 2015

One day I will become a tree,

Swinging in the gentle breeze,

Lauding the faded flowers for the past

And the everlasting green from the coming spring,

Until the sun witnesses my end.

Burning,

Burning to ashes, and gone by wind.

“The Little Brother Manifesto” by Ryan Craft Class of 2016

Hate the older when he is here.

Love the brother when he is gone.

Learn as much as you can.

Compete with him.

But never compare.

Miss him when he is gone, and

enjoy the moments you have together.

Forgive the older’s mistakes,

but, never forget.

Never become oppressed.

Remember, he will always care.

Always express yourself.

You love him,

but you do not like him.

Keep him as a role model.

You will never be as cool as him.

He will never let you win.

He will put you down.

He will let you know how pain feels.

He will make you laugh,

and he will make you cry,

but he will always love you.

“The Loneliest Workbook” by Mark Potter Class of 2016

There she sat, looking as

beautiful as ever. With her folded and rugged pages she could have been an angel. I had to approach her and at least tell her my name. Of course I knew her name though, her name was Biolo-gy. Biology Book. She had a beautiful cover and very nice binding.

I decided to finally go over to her and introduce my-self. My introduction was lame; it went something like this, “Hey Biology, I couldn’t help but notice how amazing you look today. In case you didn’t know, my name is Grammar Workbook.” It was stupid, I know, but I think it worked. I think she finally no-ticed me.

The next day I had re-ceived a phone call from a number I had never seen be-fore. Not thinking anything of it, I answered shockingly to find that the person calling was none other than the love of my life, Biology. She was calling to see if I had wanted

to go see a movie this Friday at The Locker. Hastily I said “yes,” but I did have one ques-tion for her—how did she get my phone number? “I guess it doesn’t matter,” I thought. So on Friday, I went to her house and picked her up to have one of the greatest times of my life. On the way there the question struck me again. This time I had a bad feeling along with that question pop-ping back into my mind. When I finally arrived at The Locker I saw someone I had-n’t planned on seeing. I was my nemesis, World Cultures. He had always given me trou-ble and was also very close friends with Biology. Now I knew something was wrong. This whole date was a setup for World Cultures to make fun of me. Panicking, I tried to get away and say, “forget about the date,” to Biology. But she refused, and then forced me out of the car. When I got out of the car, Bi-ology walked over to World Cultures and began to hold pages with him. I was heart-broken and I felt cheated and played. I ran away, knowing to never find love again.
