    I n t h i s i s s u e : une posed an interesting challenge for the re-

gional office as Central Visayas became one of the pilot areas for

the implementation of the DTI Strategic Performance Manage-

    ment System (SPMS).

On June 18, a Diskwento Caravan was held in Catigbian, Bohol.

The Diskwento Caravan is a public service conducted by DTI in

partnership with big manufacturers and/or distributors to sell dis-

counted school items, as well as basic and prime commodities.

Consumer welfare activities continue to remain in focus as the

regional office promoted the Bagwis Awards to traders and com-

mercial establishments that are compliant to fair trade laws and

consider consumer needs front and center in their business.

Meanwhile, DTI Cebu Provincial Office has set-up Business

Assistance Centers (BAC) in the city of Bogo and the municipality

of Daanbantayan, Cebu on June 10.

Cebu, Negros Oriental and Siquijor conducted a series of semi-

nars on entrepreneurship, product development, fair trade laws ,

consumer rights and financial management under the SME Rov-

ing Academy project of DTI; providing valuable knowledge to

    would-be entrepreneurs.

To step up the rehabilitation and recovery efforts

for the industry, trade and services (ITS) sector in

Yolanda-affected areas in Northern Cebu, the De-

partment of Trade and Industry (DTI) Cebu Provin-

cial Office has set-up Business Assistance Centers

(BAC) in the city of Bogo and the municipality of

    Daanbantayan on June 10, 2014.

The Business Assistance Center will function as

the little DTI operating within the locality and will

implement DTIs flagship projects and basic func-

    tions within its geographical scope.

The BACs will primarily function as DTI-Cebus

contact point or administrative extension in the dif-

ferent affected LGUs and help in delivering and

facilitating the necessary and immediate support

services related to rehabilitation and recovery ef-

forts for the Industry, Trade, Services (ITS) sector.

The BACs will also aid in building and enhancing

    linkages with the local gov-

    ernment units and conducting

    consultancies to facilitate the

    needs of the business sector.

    The BAC personnel Ms.

    Janeth P. Verallo, who is

based in Bogo City, will cover

the areas of Bogo City,Medellin and San Remigio.

    Assigned in Daanbantayan is

Ms. June Ilyn C. Terado who

    will cover Daanbantayan and

    Malapascua Island.

    Programs and services that

    will be coordinated by the

BAC are Bottom-Up Budgeting (BUB), Shared Services

Facilities (SSF), Streamlining of Business Permits and Li-

censing System (BPLS), Industry Clustering/Value Chainmapping, Green Growth and Disaster Resilience, Building

    Local Competitiveness and Investment Promotions.

Bogo City Mayor Martinez and the Daanbantayan Municipal

Mayor Augusto Corro expressed positivity on this endeavor

and are both very active in the process. The mayors appre-

ciate the biggest benefit of the project wherein instead of

residents travelling to Cebu City to transact with DTI, the

    agency instead goes to them.

Also underway is the establishment of BACs in the munici-palities of Sta. Fe and Sogod.

First order of business for BAC personnel is an updated

profile of the LGU for the main purpose of identifying raw

materials indigenous in the locality that can be used for

    skills training and livelihood development.

In order to bring school items and basic necessities to more

consumers at discounted prices, the DTI Bohol Provincial Of-

fice brought the Diskwento Caravan to Catigbian last June 18.

The one-day caravan were participated by big manufacturers and

distributors such as Plaza Marcela and Marcela Farms of the Altu-

ras Group, Bohol Quality Corporation, Fast Distribution Corpora-

tion, Unilever Philippines and Gardenia Philippines.

The Diskwento Caravan is a flagship project of DTI where basic

necessities and prime commodities such as bottled water, canned

goods, coffee, milk, noodles, rice, biscuits, and bread among oth-

ers are sold at discounted prices. It is designed to uphold the rights

of consumers to have access to prime and basic goods.

We tend to believe that who

we are is set in stone. "This is

who I am," we usually say.

The truth is, we are who we

choose to be in every moment.

Every decision and every action we make defines who we

    are.

How we carry ourselves in the world, how we act, is always

    our choice.

It's nice to blame our actions on something out of our con-

trol, but it won't make it true. The truth is that our actions

    always remain our own responsibilities.

Just like we have control over not breaking the law, we also

have control over our everyday actions.

It doesn't matter who we were in the past or how we chose

to carry ourselves in the world up until this point. We can

decide to act and react differently every moment.

If we change our actions, our feelings will follow eventu-

ally, and our inner and outer state will match.

"We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about

what we pretend to be." - Kurt Vonnegut

    News Bite

The normal and quiet day in Dalaguete, Cebu had a wel-

come change when the Department of Trade and Indus-

try Cebu Provincial Office went to town for the Balik Esk-

wela Diskwento Caravan on May 30-31.

The Caravan was a 2-day event held in two different

locations; in Caleriohan Public Market on the first day

and in Dalaguete Sports & Cultural Complex on the sec-ond.

Dalaguetenos wasted no time as they flocked to both

locations to avail of discounted products, knowing fully

well that those offered in the caravan arent ones readily

    available in the town proper.

Among those that were sold at discounted prices were

rice, school supplies and uniforms, houseware, furniture,

medicines, grocery items and even fresh vegetables and

    mangoes.

Zaide Bation, Division Chief of the Consumer Welfare and

Business Regulatory Division (CWBRD) estimates thatthere were about 2,000 participants in both events com-

bined, although they didnt come in all at the same time.

Aside from the trade fair, there were also side-activities

such as the briefing on the Basic Consumer Rights & Re-

sponsibilities and a guide on how to register your busi-

ness with DTI. There was also a short program with

some parlor games such as the hotdog-eating and a

dance contest to perk up the event.

The 2-day Diskwento Caravan earnedmore than 1M in gross sales for all exhibi-

    tors.

The caravan in Dalaguete was done just

before school opening and were partici-

pated by different companies namely UNI-

    TOP General Merchandise Inc., Gardenia

    Bakeries (Phil.) Inc, Prince Warehouse

    Club -Reclamation, Liwayway Marketing

    Corp. (Oishi), Worldwide Home Depot,

    National Bookstore, National Food Author-

    ity, Unilab Evercare Pharmacy, Virginia

Food Inc., Unilever and Caleriohan Public

    Market Vegetable section.

The Diskwento Caravan is a flagship pro-

ject of DTI that brings various products at

factory prices to consumers via a caravan. The project aims to

improve consumers access to basic and prime commodities at

lower prices through the mobilization of manufacturers; so in-

stead of the people going to the products, its the products that

    go to the people.

Launched in 2011, the Diskwento Caravan is a non-wage benefit

to employees, during those times when the country experiences

difficulty and consumers are burdened heavily. It was DTIs re-

sponse to the demand for increase in wages because of the ever-

increasing prices of basic necessities and prime commodities.

What was once started in NCR has been replicated all over the

country and for Cebu alone, a total of thirteen (13) Diskwento

Caravans have been conducted from 2011-2013.

The Department of Trade and Industry Region 7

(DTI 7) is organizing the Sandugo Regional Trade

Expo at the Island City Mall, Tagbilaran City, Bohol

    on July 23-27, 2014.

Now on its 9th year as a regional trade fair, the

Sandugo Trade Expo has already established

name recall among buyers and visitors all over the

    country.

This years exhibit will showcase locally made prod-

ucts ranging from furnishings and fixtures to wear-

ables, novelty items and fashion accessories, as

well as fresh and processed food.

The trade exhibit, open from 8:00 in the morning to

9:00 in the evening, will feature exhibitors from all

over Central Visayas as well as from neighboring

    provinces in Visayas and Mindanao.

DTI 7 expects this years trade

event to be as successful as last

    year.

In 2013, sales of the Sandugo

    Trade Expo exceeded the re-

gional target of P15.0M by al-

    most 30%.

    Over the years, the Sandugo

    Regional Trade Fair has been

the venue for the promotion of

    products of several MSMEs

from the Visayas and even from

    the Mindanao regions.

    Neuroscientists have discovered the

strategy for rewiring the brain. Contrary to

    popular approaches, this strategy in-

volves more than just positive thinking or

    working hard.

    1. Identify the beliefs that support your intention.

Seeing is not required for believing. In fact, you have to first believe it is

possible if you expect to truly see it manifest in your life.

Solution: Examine your current beliefs about a desired goal. Identify those

beliefs that align with the possibility of achieving your intention.

    2. Embrace your positive emotions.

Emotion is the fuel, the juice or the power behind accomplishing

your intention.Without emotion a thought is neutral, it has no real power. In

other words, it is not enough to repeat positive affirmations if you are not

    feeling anything.

Solution: What emotions align with accomplishing your goal? Why is your

intention meaningful to you? Spend time feeling these feelings as you focus

    on your intention.

    3. Visualize.

The brain cant tell the difference between something real or imagined. When you men-

tally rehearse your new habits, you strengthen your ability to create them in your life.

Solution: Identify images that align with accomplishing your goal and spend time visualiz-

    ing them daily.

    4. Take actions that support your intention.

Your actions have to match what you say you want and vice versa. You cant think and

feel one way and act another. In other words, you wont rewire your brain if you eat

donuts while repeating affirmations of being healthy and fit. Similarly, you wont rewire

your brain if you go to the gym but complain about how much you cant stand working

    out.

Solution: Identify the actions that align with your thoughts and emotions.

    5. Repeat, repeat, repeat.

Change requires practicing a new habit. It follows the principle, "use it or lose it."

Solution: Consciously practice thinking, feeling, visualizing and acting in alignment with

your desired intention. When you do this you will stop the unconscious habit of recycling

the past and activate your ability to rewire your brain in the present moment.

Dan Gilbert: The psychology of your

    future self (video)

"Human beings are works in progress that mistakenly

think they're finished." Dan Gilbert shares recent re-

search on a phenomenon he calls the "end of historyillusion," where we somehow imagine that the person

we are right now is the person we'll be for the rest of

time. Hint: that's not the case.

Surprising Benefits of Self-Deception:Why a little self-delusion can go a long way

Conventional wisdom reminds us not to kid ourselves,

to live in the real world, to set achievable goals.

But according to former Wall Street Journalreporter

Joseph T. Hallinan's new book, Kidding Ourselves: The

    Hidden Power of Self-Deception,sometimes perceiving

ourselves as better, smarter, and more powerful may

set us up for greater health, happiness, and success.

Research suggests that a feeling of control is essential

to well-being. When you feel powerless, stress hor-

mones can flood your system, and over time, they may

wear your body out. One study found that workers who

had little say over their schedules died earlier than peo-

ple who could, for example, decide when to eat lunch. If

you can make your situation more tolerableby, say,

telling yourself that your assigned lunchtime is whenyou'd eat anywayyour health will likely be better for it.

People who feel powerful are often more inclined to

seize opportunities and take risks, which helps them

    achieve goals.

Odd as it may sound, superstitions help. In one study,

researchers asked two groups of people to putt a golf ball. The

people who were told that the ball had been lucky for fellow

golfers were, as a group, 35 percent more accurate in their

putting than those who were told nothing. We all know that

there's no such thing as a lucky ball, but it doesn't matter

your confidence is boosted by information you merely believe

to be true. It won't make the impossible possible, but for chal-

lenges that fall at the edge of your ability, it's critical in giving

    you that extra boost.
