    November Birthdays!

Bear Hugs from Bambi! Our year is underway and I hope you are reconnecting with old friends and on your way to making new ones. The Hospitality Tea was a great time and several women joined that day. We are a wonderful group of diverse women who can share life's experiences. The latest new members are no exception. Step out and say hello. Make them feel welcomed. You will experience a blessing. Your smile just might make their day!!! My sister and I were going into a restaurant the other day and I said hi to an older couple leaving. They smiled and said hi in return. She asked if I knew them and I said no; that I was just making myself friendly. Being friendly to a total stranger costs us nothing, however, it might just be a gold nugget to them.

    Joys of Friendship

When the laughter is light and the memories are many but the time is too short...you know you're with a friend. Laughing when they shouldn't be laughing is some of the best laughing friends do.

    Bambi Hamming

    President

Our first project was sewing draw sheets for Kairos Dwelling. Six KANC members gathered at Linda Kubinski's home and sewed twenty-four draw sheets! A big THANK YOU goes to Bambi Hamming, Jane Curtin, Judy Hobson, Elaine Varricchio, Linda Kubinski and Bernie Hagon for their time spent on a very worthy cause! The draw sheets were delivered to Kairos Dwelling and were very much appreciated. In turn, the director and her assistant provided coffee, fresh donuts and cider for the five of us who came to learn more about Kairos Dwelling. If you would like to help in this project, we will be gathering again on the second Tuesday in January. We will be collecting gently used or new backpacks and hotel size toiletries in the month of November for St. Vincent DePaul. An outing to deliver these items and to learn more about St. Vincent DePaul will be held at a later date. A cookie exchange is being planned for the second Tuesday in December. We will be packaging extra cookies for the guests at the Hospital Hospitality House. More info will be in the next newsletter.

    2016-2017

Book Nook meets the third Monday of each month at Kazoo Books located at 2413 Parkview, Kalamazoo, just west of Oakland Dr. Turn on Book Alley off Barnard Ave. for plenty of parking behind the store. Come join us for great discussions. New members are always welcome! November 21, 2016 We will discuss mysteries. Everyone plan to talk about a mystery you’ve read or an author who writes mysteries. December 19, 2016, My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry by Fredrik Backman Discussion leader: Charlotte Hosking Elsa is seven years old and different. Her Grandmother is seventy-seven years old and crazy, standing-on-the-balcony-firing-paintball-guns-at-men-who-want-to-talk-about-Jesus crazy. She is also Elsa’s best, and only, friend. At night Elsa takes refuge in her grandmother’s stories, in the Land of Almost-Awake and the Kingdom of Miamas where everybody is different and nobody needs to be normal. When Elsa’s grandmother dies and leaves behind a series of letters apologizing to people she has wronged, Elsa’s greatest adventure begins. Her grandmother’s letters lead her to an apartment building full of drunks, monsters, attack dogs, and totally ordinary old crones, but also to the truth about fairytales and kingdoms and a grandmother like no other. January 16, 2017, The Opposite of Everyone by Joshilyn Jackson Discussion leader: Lois Loeffler Born in Alabama, Paula Vauss spent the first decade of her life on the road with her free-spirited young mother, Kai, an itinerant storyteller who blended Hindu mythology with Southern Oral Tradition to re-invent their history as they roved. But everything, including Paula’s birth name Kali Jai, changed when she told a story of her own—one that landed Kai in prison and Paula in foster care. Separated, each holding her own secrets, the intense bond they once shared was fractured. These days, Paula has reincarnated herself as a tough-as-nails divorce attorney with a successful practice in Atlanta. She hasn’t seen Kai in fifteen years, until the day her last check is returned in the mail, along with a cryptic letter. “I am going on a journey, Kali. I am going back to my beginning; death is not the end. You will be the end. We will meet again, and there will be new stories. You know how Karma works.” Then Kai’s most treasured secret literally lands on Paula’s doorstep, throwing her life into chaos and transforming her from only child to older sister. Desperate to find her mother before it’s too late, Paula sets off on a journey of discovery that will take her back to the past. With the help of her ex-lover Birdwine, an intrepid and emotionally volatile private eye who still carries a torch for her, this brilliant woman, an expert at wrecking families, now has to figure out how to put one back together.
