INTRODUCTION Kakinada is a city and a municipal
corporation in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
It is located 223 kilometres north-east of Vijayawada.
It is also the headquarters of East Godavari district.
It is nicknamed 'Fertilizer City‘, 'Pensioner's Paradise' and 'Second Madras'.
It is spread over an area of 90 km. The city is part of a Special Economic
Zone and a proposed 'Petroleum, Chemical and Petrochemical Investment Region (PCPIR)'.

ETYMOLOGY
■ This place was full of ponds filled with red lotus which is called as Kokanadamu in Telugu.
■ The city of Kakinada was called Kakinandiwada(Nandi kings).
■ The British used to call it Cocanada.
■ After Independence, the name was renaturalised to Kakinada.
■ Even now, the City's two railway stations are codenamed CCT (Kakinada Town Junction) and COA (Kakinada Port) by Indian Railways.

CITY FORM AND CITY GROWTH Major Spine of the town is the National Highway and the
State Highway
Rail Network and the Sea connectivity has led the concentration of town growth horizontally.
New Layouts have come up on the northeast towards Samalkot. (Overall 663 approved layouts)
Influence of VKPCPIR, the North direction towards Uppada and Samalkot also has potential for development.

NH-214 from Kathipudi to Ongole (both on NH-5) passes through the city
S.H-40 connects the town to Rajahmundry and other towns in the district.

Being a shore city, Kakinada is a railway terminus.
Kakinada Town Junction (CCT),

Connected to Samalkot Junction (13 km away) on the Chennai- Howrah trunk line.
