What is your story?by Senior Airman Timothy Moore86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

As a photojournalist for the U.S. Air Force, I have been exposed to and documented many aspects of the military, and I get to see how everything comes together.

Even as a younger Airman, I can see to some extent how each mission is important and why each Airman’s story needs to be told. However, this was not always the case.

Part of my mission as a member of a wing public affairs office is to document retirement ceremonies. As I was covering one ceremony at my previous assignment, I began to see why every story needs to be told.

It was during a pretty busy time of the year for my office. We were low-manned, and the jobs kept

coming. As I was walking into my third job assignment on a late Friday afternoon, I was convincing myself to go into “auto pilot” for this retirement ceremony, but what I saw when I walked in changed my mind.

In the room reserved to hold a celebration of an Airman’s 20-plus years of service in the Air Force, there were barely 25 people in attendance, including her family.

I decided to get myself out of the funk I was creating and made up my mind to go above and beyond for this person.

I was extra thorough as I covered the medal and certificate presenta-tions, the goodbye speeches, the flag folding ceremony and then the master sergeant’s final speech as an active-duty member of the Air Force.

It was during her final speech that this sergeant unknowingly changed

my perspective on my career.During her speech, she thanked

that small group of people for being there with her and her family. She was aware many of those in atten-dance, including myself, would have rather been getting ready to head home for the weekend.

Yet, she thanked us for sharing that moment with her family. As she said, even if we had seen a hundred flag folding ceremonies, that was her family’s first time seeing it, and this particular ceremony was more special to them, because it was per-formed for their Airman.

Her words hit me hard because, for the first time in my career, I real-ized my job and mission weren’t for me. I was able to capture those moments for her and her family to one day look back on.

As the people involved in her ceremony tried to tell just a small portion of her story, I had the oppor-

tunity to preserve another piece of it. I will be forever grateful to her for that.

It is part of my job to document potentially historically significant events, and, before that ceremony, I didn’t see how documenting a retirement ceremony or someone doing his or her day-to-day job could fall into that category.

That day I became aware it is my job to capture and tell every Airman’s story, so I can share it with their family, friends, loved ones and the rest of the world.

We all have a story to tell. Even if it’s similar to someone else’s story, it may be the first time those who consider you special get to hear or see it, and I would be honored to share it.

Have you allowed us to share your story? Contact the 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs office at 480-9196 or 06371-47-9196.

the replacement card to the new address. If the card is not expiring while TDY but the traveler feels they need an early reissuance of the chip card, they should contact their agency program coordinator.”

Cuebas urged all Airmen

who have questions or unusu-al circumstances to contact their agency program coor-dinator for more information and assistance.

Citibank worked close-ly with the Defense Travel Management Office and ser-vices on a phased rollout of the new cards.

In the second phase, between July and October, Citi will issue chip and PIN cards for all remaining active accounts (cards used within the last 18 months). Individuals with inactive accounts and cards not used within the last 18 months will be issued a chip and PIN card upon

expiration, regardless of the year. There will be no change to the account number and the three-digit security code for replacement cards, and the magnetic stripe can still be used for merchants without chip and PIN tech-nology.

“The cards can be used

in regions where chip tech-nology is dominant,” Cuebas said. “It is expected U.S. merchants will be adopting chip technology more widely throughout 2015.”

For more questions about chip and PIN cards, contact a local agency program coor-dinator.

Leaders from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command officially marked the open-

ing of the U.S. Army Europe Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention Resource Center on Sembach Kaserne during a senior lead-er orientation and cake cutting ceremony Jan. 7.

The SHARP RC is a new partnership among USAREUR SHARP, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, the Criminal

Investigation Division and the office of the Staff Judge Advocate to create a one-stop resource center for victims of sexual assault.

“The purpose of the SHARP RC is to offer safe, compre-hensive, victim-centered ser-vices to those within the Army family who have been victims of a SHARP incident,” said Maj. Gen. John R. O’Connor, commanding general of the 21st TSC. “It also serves as the center for SHARP training in the Kaiserslautern Military Community, and I am con-fident it will help to eradi-cate sexual assault and sexual harassment in our ranks.”

Lt. Col. Patricia K. Wright, commander of the TSC’s 21st Special Troops Battalion, said the major improvement and advantage is consolidating SHARP services under one roof.

“Anyone who needs these resources — survivors, family members, commanders — can find everything they need in one place,” she said. “They can have complete confidence all resources are available to them on-site. They won’t need to coordinate with a variety of facilities, make several trips or de-conflict appointment

The U.S. ambassador to Germany praised allied peace-build-ing and humani-tarian efforts and

called for resolute action in the face of Russian aggression during a visit to Ramstein Dec. 13.

U.S. Ambassador John B. Emerson, who assumed duties as the 32nd American ambassador to Germany dur-ing the summer of 2013, delivered a powerful mes-sage before an audience of around 450 officers, enlisted leaders, and regional mili-tary and civic officials during the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s 2014 Holiday Ball.

The ambassador described the U.S. response to Russian aggression in the Crimea and Ukraine as “crucial to our understanding of how mili-tary, political, economic and cultural alliances can work — or not — in the 21st century.” Noting that “Russia’s poli-cies of aggression in Ukraine undermine the rule of law and territorial integrity that have been emblematic of post-

Cold War Europe.” Emerson condemned the incursions in stark terms.

But the ambassador also held out hope for a diplomatic resolution to current tensions.

“NATO members and all those who support Ukraine’s sovereignty do not seek con-frontation,” he said. “It is not our design or desire to iso-late Russia. In fact, we are convinced that Moscow could rebuild trust and relationships if it simply helps to calm turbulent waters and imple-ments the Minsk agreements.

“If Russia takes such a path, sanctions will be lifted,” the Chicago-born, New York-bred diplomat added. “And what’s more, Russia’s role in addressing common chal-lenges will be welcomed. For years, the U.S. and Russia have worked together on issues ranging from reduc-ing our nuclear stockpiles to meeting our obligations under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty to cooperating in the Middle East.”

Emerson said this is the kind of cooperation that needs to be pursued.

“No one gains from this confrontation,” he said. “We have too much work to do and too many common chal-lenges, from terrorism and

nuclear proliferation to epi-demic disease and climate change.”

The ambassador reiterated the centrality of the Western alliance to U.S. diplomacy and its importance to stabil-ity and humanitarian progress

around the world following his remarks in Ramstein.

“People around the world look to the strength of the transatlantic partnership for inspiration,” he said. “I would say that how we have man-aged the events of the past

year has proven that. We are all thankful for the key role that the U.S. military has played over the years in bringing us closer than ever before to our shared goal of a

First in, last out — of Polandby Capt. Ken Hirose435th Air Ground Operations Wing

Members of the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing’s 1st Combat Communications Squadron were deployed to Powidz Air Base, Poland, in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve, a demonstration of the United States’ ongoing commitment to the collective security of NATO and European allies.

As the Air Force’s most highly dec-orated non-flying unit, the 1st CBCS is no stranger to this type of opera-tion. Part of the AGOW’s suite of “Expeditionary Airfields on Demand” capabilities, the men and women of the 1st CBCS are tasked to deploy and establish communications, air traffic control and landing systems anywhere in the European and African theaters within 72 hours.

The six-person team at Powidz pro-

vided a secure command and control platform to support flying operations for aircraft from the 182nd Airlift Wing, Illinois Air National Guard. Within hours of “boots on the ground” in Poland, they had turned an empty building into a fully functional opera-tions center.

“Working with the guard has been a great experience and has really chal-lenged me,” said Staff Sgt. Megan Thorlund, 1st CBCS data lead. “They do not utilize many of the active-duty networks and systems we do, so there have been connectivity and compati-bility issues, which we have been able to work through. It makes us better in the long run and reinforces the ‘total force’ concept.”

By providing air-to-ground com-munications to the aircrews, as well as a secure reachback and flight planning capability, this small team ensured deployed aircrews can conduct bilat-

eral exercises with Poland and the neighboring Baltic states to include practicing low-level flight training, touchdowns at unimproved landing zones and airdrop training of both cargo and personnel.

“I’m extremely impressed by the efforts of 1st Combat Communications Squadron personnel deployed to Poland,” said Lt. Col. Jack Harman, Aviation Detachment commander at Powidz. “With only six people, they coordinated all deployed communica-tion requirements for seven C-130s and 176 personnel. They enabled U.S. units to maintain a continuous pres-ence in Eastern Europe, displaying America’s commitment to collective security in the region and bolstering Poland’s ability to integrate within NATO. This team serves as an exam-ple of professionalism and combat communications capability.”

In addition to supporting mission

objectives, the team has organized and participated in three different com-munity outreach events. Doing so demonstrates a commitment to the Polish community as NATO partners. Likewise, the local town of Kleczew has adopted the team and hosted them as mentors for their high school stu-dents and honored guests for their Polish Independence Day celebration where the town mayor praised their continued support.

From providing top-notch commu-nications capabilities for flying oper-ations to strengthening partnerships with allies, this team has done it all. But that’s just another day on the job when the motto is “First In, Last Out!”

“We help (Airmen) fulfill their requirements,”

Bogan said. “If it’s a maintainer needing tools or equipment, food services equipment or services as a whole, they consult us in regards to filling any requirement they need. We are their go-to

in order to seek third-party help.”

Dealing with forms day-in and day-out can lessen the sense of impact to the mission, but when McMahon needs a reminder she recalls one of her favorite con-tracts, acquiring puppies for secu-rity forces.

“To anyone looking at that, they would just think that I am just buying a dog,” she said. “To actually realize that dog (I pur-chased) is being sent to Lackland (Air Force Base, Texas) for train-ing and then sent to other units throughout the Air Force to be used on deployments or stateside to protect the bases — that has a huge impact, but at times to us it doesn’t seem like it’s that big of a deal, because we are so used to buying items.”

Whether it’s pricing pens or multimillion dollar parts for the flightline, the 700th CONS is ensuring their shopping carts are filled with the best value for the taxpayer and Airmen.

Staff Sgt. Katie McMahon (left), 700th Contracting Squadron contracting officer, and 1st Lt. Matthew Bogan, 700th CONS contracting officer, review a contract Dec. 16 on Kapaun Air Station. McMahon and Bogan work with other contracting officers to ensure Airmen have the resources necessary to complete any mission.

Multinational training exercises bring Soldiers and equip-ment from around the world together for a realistic training experience. After weeks of hard work and equipment use, it is time for the Soldiers and their gear to go home. One organization in Kaiserslautern makes equipment retrograde easy.

The United States continues to demonstrate its commitment to the collective security of its NATO allies and support for its partners in Europe in light of the on-going Russian intervention in Ukraine, with assurance exer-cises and training activities in Poland and the Baltic region taking place for the next few months and beyond.

The 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s Theater Logistics Support Center-Europe is responsible for retrograding some of the equipment used during Operation Atlantic Resolve.

Members of TLSC-E are responsible for retrograding 15 M1A2 Abrams tanks belonging to 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division back to the U.S. The equipment arrived at Kaiserslautern Army Depot by rail from the Baltic region of Europe.

Upon arrival, TLSC-E employees off load the tanks from the train cars and stage them in preparation for agricultural cleaning and retrograde, said Gene Warren, deputy general manager of TLSC-E.

“The advantage of executing this mission here at the Kaiserslautern Army Depot is the fact that we have a railhead, drivers, mechanics, personnel experienced in agricultural cleaning and qualified customs inspectors right here on site,” Warren said. “We have the capability to download each vehicle from the railcars, drivers to get them to the staging area and maintenance shops, mechanics to pull and reinstall the power packs, and customs inspectors to certify each vehicle prior to retrograding the vehicles to the port. It’s really a one-stop shop for these tanks to go home.”

The next step for the vehicles is a thorough internal clean-ing. Mechanics and repair specialists inspect and remove all applicable electronics, seating and other hardware from inside the tank’s cabin and scrub every inch. This process, due to its complexity, can take over a week, said Michael Hofrichter, TLSC-E Supply Activity Europe mechanical shop supervisor.

“An agricultural cleaning, the kind of cleaning we do before equipment goes home, serves two purposes: ensuring no destructive pests or other foreign material enter the U.S. and cause damage and ensuring our Soldiers have clean opera-tional equipment at home station,” Hofrichter said. “Our staff is very thorough in their work, both removing hardware and cleaning.”

Once the inside of the tanks are cleaned, their power pack is

removed in preparation for a trip to the TLSC-E wash rack. The hull of the vehi-cle is cleaned, the power pack reinstalled and the tank is ready for inspection by customs agents. Once inspected and certified, the vehicles are ready to go home.

“Our Soldiers deserve the very best vehicles in the most pristine condition. That is our goal at TLSC-E,” Warren said.

AF announces no involuntary force management programs for FY15WASHINGTON — Air

Force officials announced there is no longer a need to conduct involuntary force management programs for fiscal year 2015 following a year of significant reductions designed to meet the Defense Department strategic and budgetary guidance.

Officials confirmed that fiscal year 2014 goals were achieved to size and shape the force, eliminating the previ-ously anticipated requirement to conduct a second round of

involuntary programs in fiscal year 2015.

“My travels and discus-sion with Airmen this past year have convinced me that enough is enough,” said Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James. “Therefore, we will not have additional, involuntary boards in FY15.”

Targeted fiscal year 2015 voluntary programs, with eli-gibility limited by both grade and Air Force specialty codes, will be offered to help prop-

erly shape the force. These non-monetary opportunities are part of the normal steady-state force management programs used annually to size and shape the force according to mandated end strength.

Voluntary programs will include waivers of some active-duty service commit-ments, reductions of required time in grade for retirements, and reductions from 10 to eight years of commissioned service for retirements, allow-

ing prior enlisted officers to retire with eight years of com-missioned time versus 10.

The Palace Chase program will still be in place, but the expanded option of a one-for-one transfer will not be avail-able this year. Specific details on voluntary programs will be released in early 2015.

“I’m really pleased we’ll be able to offer our dedi-cated Airmen a break this year,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III. “Throughout this diffi-

cult process we committed to providing information to our Airmen and families early so they could make decisions. Announcing the FY15 pro-grams now continues that commitment and provides some of the stability Airmen truly deserve.”

Command Sgt. Maj. Jessie C. Harris Jr., 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s 39th Transportation Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade senior enlisted adviser, places the 16th Sust. This unit’s Soldiers can be found at every major airborne

exercise in Europe, and they train with other paratroopers all over the world. They are known for providing the best in aerial delivery and an air-borne Santa every year. As one chapter in this historic unit closes, another begins.

The 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s 5th Quartermaster Company (Rigger) transfered author-ity from the 21st Special Troops Battalion to the 39th Transportation Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade during a ceremony Jan. 6 on Rhine Ordnance Barracks.

Authority over and care for the 5th QM Co. will now fall to the 39th Trans Bn. All personnel actions, open legal actions and property account-ability also went to the “We’ll Carry You” battalion. The transfer was signified by the Soldiers of the company don-ning the 16th Sust. Bde. patch.

“This transfer of author-ity involved the transfer of a lot of property, equipment and reporting chains, some-thing that is not necessarily easy,” said Lt. Col. Steven

Dowgielewicz, 39th Trans. Bn. commander. “The trans-fer happened with ease and transparency because of the hard work of the 21st Special Troops Battalion.”

The transfer of author-ity is part of the 21st TSC’s realignment of logistics assets in Europe to better plan and execute future missions. The 5th QM Co. is the only U.S. aerial delivery company in Germany, a capability valu-able to the 39th Trans. Bn. and its mission.

“By aligning logistics assets all under single commands, like the 16th Sustainment Brigade, it allows planners to assess the full spectrum of distribution options with-in the European Command,” Dowgielewicz said. “Having an aerial delivery capability is definitely an asset to this bat-talion and brigade.”

As the Soldiers of the 5th QM Co. move forward in their new battalion, their com-mander expressed the occa-sion as bittersweet.

“The 21st Special Troops Battalion has been our home for a long time and the only battalion most of us have ever known,” said Capt. Toby D. Holland, 5th QM Co. com-mander. “We are sad to say goodbye to the STB, but we are excited to start our mission with the 39th (Trans. Bn.).”

Europe, whole, free and at peace. “Yet we also recognize that we cannot take

peace and prosperity for granted,” he contin-ued. “Major challenges have emerged over the past several months. Just look at the Ebola outbreak, the emergence of a barbaric ter-rorist threat in the Middle East, and Russia’s annexation of Crimea and incursions on the sovereignty of Ukraine. These naturally pose very different threats from those we expe-rienced during the world wars of the last century or during the Cold War. But they are extremely significant and potentially very dan-gerous.”

Emerson emphasized the contributions of alliance and partnership to peace and stabil-ity, invoking contemporary as well as historic examples.

“While one nation can win a war, it takes many nations to maintain the peace,” he said. “Seven decades ago, it might have been almost inconceivable that a European-American partnership this strong would have risen from the ashes of World War II. And today we see that no one nation can make a real difference by acting alone. Instead we need a collective response, whether we are talking about climate change, the security of Ukraine, the energy stability of Europe, peace in the Middle East, combating the threat of disease like the deadly Ebola virus, or creating a framework that will sustain economic growth well into this century, like the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership agreement that the U.S. and the European Union are currently negotiating.”

The ambassador described the U.S. pres-ence in Europe as essential to national secu-rity and American foreign policy.

“As transatlantic allies and partners, we

are engaged in a re-examination of who we are and what we stand for in the post-Cold War, post-reunification, globalized world of the 21st century,” Emerson said. “The NATO summit in Wales was a part of this process. All 28 NATO allies made a series of very important commitments on assur-ance, defense spending, readiness and part-nerships.”

The ambassador highlighted the contribu-tions of U.S. military personnel, particularly Soldiers serving with U.S. Army Europe and the 21st TSC, to regional security as well as world humanitarian efforts.

“We all sleep better knowing that the U.S. military, as the strongest partner in the Alliance, is prepared for any contingency and supports the Rapid Response Force and increased presence in Central and Eastern Europe,” he said.

Turning his attention to Operation United Assistance and U.S. contributions to human-itarian endeavors in Ebola-afflicted West Africa, the ambassador praised the efforts of medical volunteers, aid workers, inter-national partners and U.S. military person-nel, including Soldiers from the 21st TSC’s 902nd Engineer Company (Vertical), part of the 15th Eng. Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, who recently built 74 structures in support of medical missions in Liberia. Emerson emphasized the potentially dire consequences of inaction in Africa.

“If this epidemic is not stopped, this dis-ease could cause a humanitarian catastrophe across the region that would reverberate around the world,” he said. “In an era in which regional crises can quickly become global threats, stopping Ebola is in the inter-est of everyone. So we are very proud of those 21st TSC personnel who have partici-pated in this important mission.”

Word ScrambleUnscramble these military ranks

After taking a small hiatus during the holidays, I am back once again to share with you my most recent adven-ture to Cologne, Germany.

I had the need to leave the confines of our home and stretch my paws into the world, so the humans and I decided to venture off to Cologne and see what new experiences we could indulge ourselves in.

The first thing we had to check out was the towering 516-foot cathedral looking over the people in the city, as if it were a father weathered by time, guarding the hundreds of ambitious pups scur-rying at its feet.

The detail in the architecture was enchanting; the building was

made of engrav-ings depicting a story that refused to erode with the world around it. The stained glass within acted as a filter, turning dull light into a cascade of color, dancing from wall to wall within the religious palace. It

was all so breathtaking that by the time we had finished embrac-ing the culture and history locked within this masterpiece, we were ready to go home to plan our next exciting trip.

While my time today has fin-ished, there are always new things to experience. Go off and explore the untold stories locked in time, and come back to share your adventure with me. I look forward to hearing from you.

Story and photo by Staff Sgt. Warren W. Wright Jr.21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs

Leaders and Soldiers from throughout the 21st Theater Sustainment Command rang in 2015 with members of the German military and local

leaders from the Kaiserslautern com-munity with food, fellowship and tradi-tion during a New Year’s reception Jan. 9 at Armstrong’s Club on Vogelweh.

The occasion began with a piece of military tradition — the receiving line. Guests filed into the ballroom, signed into a guest book and were offi-cially greeted by Maj. Gen. John R. O’Connor, commanding general of the 21st TSC; Command Sgt. Maj. Rodney J. Rhoades, 21st TSC senior enlisted leader; and Command Sgt. Maj. David S. Davenport Sr., com-mand sergeant major of U.S. Army Europe. To add a flare of German tradition, a local chimney sweep and his daughter also welcomed the guests and pre-sented them with a 1 euro cent piece.

“The chimney sweep gives us good luck for the coming year,” said Dr. Klaus Weichel, lord mayor of Kaiserslautern.

Receiving the 1 euro cent piece “is a German symbol of gaining peace and welcoming in the new year,” he said.

O’Connor then addressed all in attendance, wel-

coming them and wishing them a happy new year. “I am honored to bring in the new year with all

of our NATO alliance members, community leaders and German city, state and federal representatives under one roof,” O’Connor told the guests. “I feel so fortunate to have shared this past year with all of you and to have experienced so many historic anni-versaries of great magnitude with the terrific people across the state of Rheinland-Pfalz and the broader European community.”

After his speech, O’Connor was joined by Weichel and other German civilian and military leaders, as well as senior leaders from the 21st TSC,

to cut the cake with the ceremonial saber. First in Support leaders and their guests then enjoyed food, camaraderie and music provided by the U.S. Army Europe Band.

Taking the time to celebrate the new year together is “about building strong relationships and saying thank you,” Rhoades said. “It’s about spending time with one another, because we all work so hard, and taking the time to really develop these personal and professional relationships will make us a stronger and better community and family.”

For O’Connor, building upon the already strong relationship the 21st TSC has with the local community and its NATO partners throughout Europe is a top priority for his command.

“This effort will continue into the new year as we face new challenges

and create new ways of working together within our joint partnership,” O’Connor said. “Our strong sense of community and commitment to Europe and to each other will continually motivate us to excel forward together, whatever the future brings.”

Weichel said he agrees the German partner-ship with its U.S. allies is vital to the security of Germany and the rest of Europe.

“We all have a common way of life and com-mon political issues,” Weichel said. “Working to strengthen our NATO partnership means that all of us can continue to live in peace and security for a long time to come.”

PT failure is more than an Airman’s problemby Maj. Onnie RetkofskyU.S. Air Forces in Europe

The last Monday of 2014 I reported to the Fitness Assessment Cell to complete my annual physical train-ing test, along with many others. As we weighed in, got measured and paired up, I found myself partnered with a young Airman. We completed our pushup portion and moved on to sit-ups. As her turn finished and the physical training administrator began recording scores, panic ensued. I had counted 34 sit-ups, and 38 was the minimum they required.

Desperation consumed the Airman, and she asked, “Can you please just say 38?”

I was surprised and saddened by the request, but at the moment all I said was, “No, I can’t do that.”

I reported 34 sit-ups, and the test con-tinued. Afterward, I pulled the Airman aside and lectured her on the basics of integrity and maintaining standards. As I walked away I wanted to offer my help, but my first thought was to let her supervisor handle the rest.

I have since regretted that decision. I spoke to a member of the Fitness Assessment Cell staff after I lectured the Airman and was told this was not an isolated incident, and it occurs throughout all ages and ranks. I was further disheartened.

I see this as more than an indi-vidual’s failure to maintain minimum standards. I also see this as a failure of our community.

I would like to believe that if some-one had taken an interest in this indi-vidual and given her a pre-test two or three months ahead of time, this situa-tion could have been avoided.

Some argue this is an individu-al responsibility, and the Air Force should get rid of those who will not maintain standards. I think there are exceptions to that line of reasoning.

The first exception would be for younger Airmen. I have trained 19- and 20-year-olds who did not know how to operate a treadmill or had not eaten anything green since basic train-ing. Most do not understand the effects a desk job can have on overall health.

We recruit from a society that is

predominantly out of shape, and though our young troops are motivat-ed and eager, many are still learning to take care of themselves in a new environment. They need consistent, involved leadership during their first crucial years in the Air Force.

The second exception involves Airmen that have historically main-tained fitness standards but, due to a wide spectrum of possible issues, begin to fail. The physical body is often a place where the challenges of life manifest themselves. When personal issues begin to overwhelm an individual, their health and fitness levels can and likely will suffer.

As members of the military, we are continuously transplanted from one base or state to another. We are bro-ken away from our families and com-munity. Therefore it is imperative we take care of one another. If we notice a co-worker beginning to struggle phys-ically, as Airmen we are obligated to offer support and ensure they receive effective assistance somehow.

My intention in writing this article was to offer my assistance. First, to

the Airmen who just failed their PT test and to anyone else who has just failed or thinks they are in danger of failing. I would also like to help anyone scared of taking the PT test. This test is a minimum standard, and I believe everyone can pass it if prop-erly motivated and trained.

I am a certified personal and group trainer and a trained physical train-ing leader. I will be teaching a free four-week course called “Emerging Warrior” at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Southside Fitness Center for anyone interested in improving their current physical condition and learning more about overall wellness. If you can dedicate yourself to change, instruc-tion and hard work, you can pass your PT test and learn how to maintain that standard throughout the year.

It is my goal to help improve our health and wellness across the KMC in 2015. Through education, commu-nity support and dedication we can all finish this year stronger and healthier.

21st TSC hosts military, local leaders during New Year’s reception

by Spc. Glenn M. Anderson221st Public Affairs Detachment

Loud booms rang out across the forest on Rhine Ordnance Barracks as Soldiers from the 361st Civil Affairs Brigade,

7th Civil Support Command, encountered a simulated roadside bomb as they trained for convoy operations.

For some, it was the fi rst time they experienced an improvised explosive device detonating outside their Humvee. For oth-ers, the Jan. 11 exercise was a reminder of the dangers often faced downrange. For Staff Sgt. Daniel Vidican, who has already deployed to a combat zone, the simulated attack was a great refresher.

“This training was really good and very realistic especially with the simulated IED device that was placed on our route,” said Vidican, a civil affairs specialist with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, recalling an IED strike from his deploy-ment.

While noting the real IED he experienced was a lot louder and a lot scarier, the training helps junior Soldiers get in the mindset of what an IED is about, Vidican said. They learn about what to look for while on convoy.

Spc. Adriana Velazquez, who has yet to deploy to combat, knows the training might one day save

her life. Velazquez was amazed at how realistic the training was and hopes this was as close she will ever come to an IED, she said. Still, her team learned a lot.

“The training here was really good, and (it’s) amazing how much we did not pay attention before this exercise,” Velazquez said. “Our No. 1 mistake was communication, but this is why this training is planned for us.”

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz provided the unit with the training area at ROB, a sprawling post located a few miles northeast of Kaiserslautern that once housed ammunition warehouses and is now mostly desolate forestland.

The brigade’s primary mis-sion is to provide civil affairs capabilities to the 21st Theater Sustainment Command and U.S. Army Europe in the U.S. European Command’s areas of responsibility.

However, these Soldiers could also fi nd themselves deployed into more hostile areas where roadside bombs are an ongoing threat. Therefore, convoy train-ing must include how they would react if their column were to face an explosion. The two-day session, offered by former mili-tary members who work for a Baumholder, Germany-based contractor, included both class-room instruction and a fi eld exer-cise.

A three-man training team set up simulators, launched the

attack and then held after action reviews with the Soldiers, said Jim Franks, a counter-IED coordina-tion cell trainer. It’s the fi rst time the IED trainers worked with Reserve Soldiers in Europe.

“This will set them up for a larger training sce-nario when they do their annual training later,” Frank said.

Roadside bombs have been the enemy’s weapon of choice and will continue to be a part of the modern battlefi eld, said Franks, who served with Marines downrange.

“We hope that our students take away the impor-tance of this training in case they are ever in the IED scenario,” Franks said.

times, potentially at a traumatic point in their lives.”

Wright described the consolidation of the resource center under the spe-cial troops battalion as an ideal means of operationalizing O’Connor’s vision for combating sexual violence.

“Operationalizing this under a bat-talion was an ideal way not only to meet the CG’s strategic goals but to align our structure with business prac-tices and priorities across the com-mand,” she said. “He has made this one of his top priorities, and this approach made the best sense. It’s a leadership issue, not merely a staff process.”

The facility strives to ensure Soldiers

are provided with the most up-to-date education and training in order to help meet the Army’s goal of eliminating sexual assault from its ranks.

“The resources center will staff professional and knowledgeable vic-tim advocates for the purpose of vic-tim advocacy services,” said Sgt. 1st Class James Watson, a sexual assault response coordinator with the 21st TSC. “Along with that, we will ensure that all units are trained with the most up-to-date curriculum to ensure prevention at the lowest level is the focus.”

The facility employs a sexual assault response team consisting of various personnel capable of provid-ing victims with a comprehensive,

sensitive and coordinated system of intervention and care.

Those utilizing the SHARP RC have the ability to receive and have access to all these services at one location, Watson said.

“While victims will still be required to go to Landstuhl for medical treat-ment, all other services, such as CID, special victims counsel, behavioral health and victim advocacy services, can be completed at the new facility,” he said.

Watson added that though the facil-ity’s main focus is the victims, it also can be used by other SARCs, victim advocates and tenant commands to gather information or resources for their individual programs.

“We can assist in providing trained instructors for unit-level required training as well as a training location when other venues are not available,” he said.

O’Connor said this center is impor-tant for the overall health of the Army family.

“There is no place for sexual assault or sexual harassment in the Army, or anywhere else for that matter,” he said.

Anyone wishing to receive the ser-vices provided by the SHARP RC can do so by visiting the facility on Sembach Kaserne, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, or by calling the 24-hour hotline at 0631-413-7280.

Visitors can explore historical facts and original objects from the bottom of the sea and the reconstruction of several areas of the ship.

Speyer hosts Titanic exhibitionThe Historical Museum of the Palatinate in

Speyer presents “Titanic — The Exhibition: Real Discoveries, True Fates,” until June 28.

The main attractions of this exhibition are the almost 250 original artifacts that have been salvaged from the seabed through a series of deep sea expeditions. These objects include personal belongings of the passengers, furnish-ings and equipment of the ship and parts of the doomed ship itself. Alongside these original objects, lavish stagings and reconstructions of ship compartments invite visitors into an impressive journey of discovery of a bygone era.

Exhibitions regarding this subject have pre-viously been held in Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels. Speyer is, however, the first German venue for this newly arranged exhibition, which displays original objects taken from the Titanic’s wreckage. Starting with a consider-ation of the world around the year 1900, major aspects of this exhibition include the presenta-tion of the construction of the ship, its furnish-ings and equipment, as well as content devoted to the class differences of the passengers on board, the series of events that occurred lead-ing to its disastrous demise and the manner in which, years later, the objects presented in this exhibition were salvaged from the seabed.

Additionally, the Historical Museum of the Palatinate devotes part of the exhibition to

the biographies of the German passengers on board as well as to the circumstances that have led to the unprecedented myth, which persists to his day, surrounding the doom of this sup-posedly unsinkable ship.

Still, today, over 100 years after its doomed maiden voyage, the name of this ship is at once synonymous with inconceivable tragedy and a sustained shock to humanity’s belief in almighty technology. After considerable research, it was only in 1985 that the location of the shattered wreck could be pinpointed. In the course of many expeditions, carried out between 1987 and 2010, many relics of this catastrophe were salvaged and brought up from the seabed 3,800 meters below sea level. Besides the presentation of pieces of the actual ship, such as rivets, lamps and tiles, accou-terments, such as tableware and glassware, as well as private objects, such as personal papers, jewelry and personal body care prod-ucts, are all on show at this exhibition.

An accompanying booklet is available for this exhibition.

During the course of this exhibition, the Historical Museum of the Palatinate is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Further information pertaining to this exhibi-tion and its considerable accompanying program can be found at www.titanic-dieausstellung.de.

(Information provided by Historical Museum of the Palatinate)

First class cabins on the Titanic were equipped with lux-ury. The two most expensive suites had two bedrooms, two dresser rooms, a living room, a bathroom with toilet and a private sun deck.

Each visitor of the exhibition receives a boarding pass to retrace the individual destiny of a passenger.

Fresh air, culinary specialties and fine red wines are what visitors can expect Jan. 23 to 25 during Freinsheim’s red wine hike, according to organizers.

The annual red wine hike in the wine-growing community of Freinsheim is

known as the first highlight of the year in the Palatine vineyards.

The event will start at 6 p.m. Jan. 23 with a torch hike leading from the town hall along the wine hiking path to a vineyard called “Musikantenbuckel.”

Interested participants will meet near the Baroque town hall that dates back to 1732. Torches will be available near the town hall and at a winery near the train station.

On Jan. 24 and 25, guided tours will start at 11:30 a.m. at the historical town hall. Wine Princess Anne II and a local music group will welcome hik-ers who want to join the guided tours.

On all three days of the event, local vintners will present various red wines, such as Dornfelder, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Saint Laurent and Spätburgunder, in their wineries and at stands.

To be able to warm up in this cold weather, Glühwein (heated, red wine spiced with cloves and cinnamon sticks) will also be served.

During the event, visitors can taste a variety of food specialties, including potato soup with damp-fnudeln, meat dumplings with horseradish sauce, potato dumplings with mushrooms, bratwurst, grilled ham, cheese spätzle with red wine onions, goulash soup, pea soup, fresh oysters and scampis with spaghetti. Desserts will include chocolate cake with red wine plums, red wine cake and red wine muffins.

Food and beverage stands will be open from 6 to 10 p.m. Jan. 23, and 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Jan. 24 and 25.

The Freinsheim soccer club will sponsor a 10-kilometer folks run starting at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 25

in the Oschelkopf vineyard. Interested runners can register online at www.br-timing.de. Starting fee costs €5. An extra €3 will be charged for those reg-istering after Jan. 24.

Freinsheim has a medieval ring wall that dates back to the 15th century. The wall surrounds the old part of town with towers and gates. It is known as one of the nicest and most complete town fortification facilities in the Pfalz. For visitors, it’s worth a visit just to explore. Walking tours around the town wall, which take about an hour, are also available.

For more information on the city and the red wine hike, visit www.stadt-freinsheim.de.

To get to Freinsheim, travel on autobahn A6 direction Mannheim; take the Grünstadt exit; follow the signs to Kirchheim, Dackenheim and Freinsheim.

Know dangers of teething remediesWhen a baby’s first set of teeth

begin to break through the gums it is referred to as teething. Teething usu-ally begins around 6 months of age. However, it is not uncommon for teething to begin between 3 and 12 months of age.

Some babies become fussier than usual when they are teething. This may be because of soreness and swell-ing in the gums before a tooth breaks through the gums. So, how can you help your baby be more comfortable while teething?

This is where over-the-counter pain relievers come into play, such as Anbesol, Hurricaine, Orajel, Baby Orajel and Orabase. These items should be applied to dry gums in order to be effective. This may become quite challenging, because most babies salivate more during teething and may end up ingesting the gel.

Swallowing these medications could be harmful to a baby. These topical pain relievers contain a local anes-thetic called benzocaine. According to the American Dental Association, benzocaine has been associated with a rare, but serious, and sometimes fatal condition called methemoglo-binemia. If this condition develops, the amount of oxygen carried through the blood stream is greatly reduced. Due to this association, the Food and Drug Administration recommends not to use benzocaine products for chil-dren younger than 2, except under the advice and supervision of a health care professional.

Also, be aware of products that claim to be all natural. Back in 2010, the FDA recalled Hyland’s Teething Tablets, which claimed to be 100 per-cent natural. Analysis of this product showed inconsistent amounts of bella-

donna, a substance that can cause seri-ous harm at large doses. In July 2011, the tablets were re-introduced with a

new formula; however, the product still contained belladonna.

Even if medication claims to be “all natural” it does not necessarily mean they are safe.

The use of Children’s Tylenol is acceptable, but be sure to use the appropriate dose for your child.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the safest approach to managing your infant’s teething pain, as well as soothing their tender gums, is the use of a teething ring chilled in the refrigerator. Also, using a clean finger to gently rub or massage the baby’s gums for 2 min-utes at a time may bring temporary relief from teething pain.

For any question regarding your child’s oral health and development, contact the Ramstein Dental Clinic at 479-2210.

U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle is the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history. But there was much more to him than his skill as a sharp-shooter. Kyle is sent to Iraq with only one mission: to protect his brothers-in-arms. His pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battle eld and, as stories of his courageous exploits spread, he earns the nickname “Legend.”

However, his reputation is also growing behind enemy lines, put-ting a price on his head and mak-ing him a prime target of insur-gents. He is also facing a di erent

kind of battle on the home front: striving to be a good husband and father from halfway around the world. Chris serves through four harrowing tours of duty in Iraq, personifying the spirit of the SEAL creed to “leave no one behind.” But upon returning to his wife and kids, Chris nds that it is the war he can’t leave behind.

Things to do in Kaiserslautern & Ramstein

If you are looking for things to do off base with your family around Kaiserslautern, Ramstein and Baumholder, or you are looking for places to visit from the KMC while you are stationed here, then look no further! MilitaryInGermany.com has tips, recommen-dations and information just for you, written by Americans living in KMC, ex-pats and Kaiserslautern locals to help you to get the very best of your time here.

Introduction to KMCThe KMC is a community of Americans living in and around Kaiserslautern, who provide support to the United States armed forces. The KMC is home to around 53,000 people, including armed forces service members, De-partment of Defense civilians and their fami-lies. The KMC is the largest U.S. military community outside of the states. The KMC and surrounding areas have some lovely sights and things to do if you are going to be stationed here or if you are visiting friends or family on base, such as:

The Pfälzer Wald Nature ParkThis is the largest wooded area in Germany and is right on your doorstep. With this area of Germany having the mildest climate, this wildlife park is perfect for taking a nice stroll or bike ride. Covering over 12,000 square kilometers of land, it’s unrealistic to see all of it, but there are plenty of small trails for you to follow and discover some of the beautiful castles and ruins along the way.

The German Wine RoadIf you’re interested in a glass of wine, or two, or three and would like to enjoy some of the beauti-ful scenery Germany has to offer, why not take a trip down the German Wine Road where there’s a string of gem-like wine villages, castle ruins and fruit trees to enjoy.

Bad Dürkheim - This city is the site of the an-nual sausage market, known as the Wurstmarkt,in September. Despite its name, the market is actually the biggest wine festival in Germany. The market takes place in front of the world’s largest wine barrel, which was actually made ac-cording to barrel making principals. It could hold millions of gallons of wine, but instead holds a

restaurant. The large population of Americans leads to some lively nightlife with a good jazz and rock music scene. Acts from the U.S. come over regularly to perform in Kaiserslautern’s numer-ous clubs. Keep yourself informed by checking back regularly with our “Events” section on this site. There are many cultural activities, including a year-round offering of operas, musicals and plays. Two museums house a rich collection of Palatinate history, folklore and art, and there is also a Beer Tankard Museum with more than 500 exhibits from the last 200 years.

From April to October the city hosts a World Garden Show, including a beautiful Japanese garden and Europe’s largest dinosaur exhibi-tion. The city also has a zoo and a downtown skating rink, and the pleasant Volkspark offers

Sunday concerts.

Exploring Outside KMCThere is a tremendous amount to see and do while living in this beautiful region of Ger-many. But perhaps you want to venture a little further afield? Visit our other city and country pages to get tips and recommendations for things to do and places to visit:
