New plant boosts local job marketDargaville has received a big economic boost as 13 new jobs are created in town with the opening of a new biotechnology plant operated by India-based Pristine Biologicals NZ Ltd.

Pristine is working in association with Silver Fern Farms and the new plant in Mako Street has been lauded by Kaipara District Council commission chair, John Robertson.

“The company has invested considerably to open the plant here in Dargaville and we welcome and salute the fact that they are working with Silver Fern Farms to support the local area,” he said as the ribbon was cut at the opening by the Minister for Food Safety, Jo Goodhew, last Monday.

“It is great to see the creation of employment.”

Silver Fern Farms is set to supply by-product to Pristine which allows the company to make vaccinations for both humans and animals. The parent company in India makes immunisations

that are affordable, accessible and quality assured at the lowest possible prices.

The company’s New Zealand director, Dr Vijay Dasari said Dargaville was chosen “once we met the team at Silver Fern Farms, led by plant manager Lance Warmington. We are extremely confident we can build a strong working relationship with them.

“New Zealand’s clean, green imagine is certainly a huge factor in sourcing raw material for these vaccines. The end product will be further processed in our parent company’s facility in India.”

Dr Dasari says he is excited about this new venture and is committed to the town. He has ensured the plant used local contractors and services to fit out the new facility.

Ms Goodhew, who previously worked as a nurse giving immunisations to children, said she never imagined cutting the ribbon to a company in New Zealand that would be working to protect children and animals in the future.

“This is an innovative approach in business. Primary industries in New Zealand are built on high credibility throughout the world and this partnership with Silver Fern Farms creates more jobs for the locals.”

Celebrating excellence

Cross country fun

p The Wellsford Junior School are currently working on the topic ‘Pirates and Princesses’ and the year one and two students in room 14 worked together to modify a big pirate book into a class playscript. The children had to design and make costumes for their play whilst also focussing on voice projection and use of expression. “The whole process was led by student teacher Caleb Watkin on his final practicum, and they presented their play to the whole school which was a great success,” said teacher Serina Wade.

p Year 13 Dargaville High School high achiever Rachel Hansen received excellence in media studies sponsored by NorthSouth Multi Media along with excellence and merit awards in a number of other subjects and Dux Litterarum, at the senior prizegiving held on October 30. Rachel will go on to study Health Science at the University of Otago in 2016. She says this year has been challenging but enjoyable and will now focus on studying for her final exams.

p Last Wednesday, Matakohe, Paparoa and Tinopai Schools gathered at Matarua Golf Course for their annual cross country event. With 16 races, there was plenty of enjoyment for all. A crowd of proud parents and supportive students made it a great day out. Year 1 Girls winner was Patience Jeolle from Tinopai School, 2nd was Stevie Ross Paparoa Primary, 3rd Olivia Tong Paparoa Primary

Electric move forlittle town of lightsu by Ayla Miller

Kaiwaka is leading by example as it becomes home to the first ChargeNet electric vehicle charging station of a planned 75 to be rolled out across the country in the next three years.

Electric charging vehicle network company ChargeNet officially opened the station for use in the Jaques Foursquare carpark on October 30 and Foursquare owners Greg and Paula Jaques invited electric vehicle drivers to make use of it from then onwards.

As electric vehicles become more affordable, the demand for charging stations is increasing and many popular electric vehicles have a range of only 120 kilometres.

This has lead to a nation-wide network of Rapid DC Chargers that let any electric vehicle owner quickly recharge in 10-25 minutes. These are placed in locations where people might stop for 30 minutes anyway.

“We think it is the way of the future. There will be more electric cars and it will be good for the environment,” says Paula.

“We have had people from surrounding areas pop in because they have seen the station being installed. They are pleased because it means they have somewhere midway between Whangarei and Auckland that they can charge and it is so fast.”

A fast charger is planned for Dargaville in the next few weeks commencing the proposed installation

of a station every 80 kilometres. “This will allow everybody in New Zealand with an entry level electric vehicle to travel long distances,” says ChargeNet public relations manager Dee West.

“Per head of population, Northland has the highest concentration of electric vehicles.”

ChargeNet have been searching for suitable locations for the stations and hope that the public will support this project as it reaches the rest of the country.

“Our vision is to work with any New Zealand entities who have the skills and resources to contribute to the public charging network for New Zealand,” said CEO and founder of ChargeNet Steve West.

New Zealand currently has 816 electric vehicles and ownership has followed an exponential growth curve with numbers typically doubling each year in countries that have encouraged adoption to electric vehicle use. ¢

The CMA hall in Tirarau Street, Dargaville has been used for many years by the Greenways Trust for activities with their clients and the Civilian Maimed Association have decided the time has come to hand the hall over for safekeeping.

“This keeps the proper ty in local ownership for community use,” said treasurer/secretary of the Civilian Maimed Association, Brian Campbell.

“The hall was originally owned by the Intellectually Handicapped Society and the Civilian Maimed Association used it regularly over the years when Joy Keatley was running the social group for disabled people in the area from the early 70’s.”

In the mid 80s the CMA brought it off the IHC and a bequest from the Charlie and Thelma Parker family trust enabled a kitchen to be added.

“Gradually the group disbanded and Greenways and associated groups have been helping us care for the building. We feel the hall has done a full circle and is now being used for its initial intended use.”

Sharing expert informationIn a move to include the Kaipara in a nationwide conversation, Dargaville local and supporter of the Neurological Foundation Albie Russell, has organised the screening of a talk by New Zealand’s top brain scientist Professor Richard Faull at the ANZAC Theatre.

Mr Russell said rural residents often miss out on opportunities to hear experts speak because these events happen in the larger cities and he believes there are a number of people interested to hear an expert speak about the brain.

As a result the Neurological Foundation is showing a free public video of a recent talk by Professor Richard Faull on Tuesday, November 10 at 10am.

One in five New Zealanders will be affected by a neurological disorder in their lifetime and the talk will outline the progress of brain research in New Zealand, and the prospects for the development of future treatments.

Professor Faull is a director of the Centre for Brain Research at the University of Auckland leading a team of 300 researchers. He is recognised internationally as a leading expert on neurodegenerative diseases of the human brain and collaborates with scientists all over the world.

Forty years ago Professor Faull became interested in the brain as a student at Otago University and has gone on to change the way the scientific world tackles neurological disease. He has made major contributions to

Conservation week is November 1–8 and several Kaipara agencies including the Department of Conservation, Kaipara District and Northland Regional Councils, the Baylys Beach Society and Nga Ripo, are combining forces to create a Family Fun Day at Baylys Beach from 12–4pm on Saturday, November 7.

“People of all ages, shapes and sizes are being encouraged to get out to our natural conservation areas and reap the health benefits as a result,” says Department of Conservation’s partnership’s ranger Fiona Watson.

“This year’s theme ‘Healthy Nature Healthy People’ draws the link between looking after our natural spaces and improving our health outcomes.”

There is a treasure hunt, sand sculpture competition, tee ball and many other games and activities organised.

“It is great to do collaborative projects with other community organisations because it is a good way to build relationships. Family is really important

and these events are a good place to come without having to bring your wallets,” said co-organiser from Nga Ripo, Jenny Huriwai.

“We want people to come and enjoy the environment we have available to us on the coast for the day as we mark Conservation Week.

Jenny says lifeguards will not be on duty and there are no planned water activities, and reminds people if they play in the water they need to be safe and responsible.

There is no charge for the family focussed event and there will be a free barbecue and drinking water available for people to refill their water bottles. ¢

Northland is pushing on as New Zealand’s ‘electric vehicle’ capital with the launch of a fast charge station at Kaiwaka. The Kaiwaka fast charger, which can fully charge an EV in 20–25 minutes, is a collaboration between local electricity lines company Northpower, Kaipara District Council and ChargeNet. It is located outside Greg and Paula Jaques’ Four Square store, giving Aucklanders easy access to juice up on their way north.ChargeNet plans to roll-out a further 74 fast charge stations around New Zealand over three years – the next in Dargaville by the end of November, just weeks after Northpower put in a destination charger at Totara Street.Northpower will also have destination chargers in Mangawhai and Tutukaka within weeks – taking its total of EV chargers in Kaipara and Whangarei to 12.Northpower launched New Zealand’s first EV fast charger in Whangarei in 2014. There are now more than 50 EVs in Northland – most of those in Whangarei – and Northpower is keen to share its knowledge to help other areas of New Zealand with EV uptake.Kaipara District Council believes collaboration is the key to assisting in the growth of the EV sector in Northland.ChargeNet Director Steve West says EVs are going to be a game changer for New Zealand by lowering emissions and saving people money.

Be Safe, Cable Locate, Dig SafeIt is critical to safely locate electricity cables before you start digging. That’s why we are encouraging people to take the time to look through the ‘Safe Digging’ section of the Northpower website: http://northpower.com/network/safety/around_the_network/safe_digging To request a ‘cable locate’, it is important to use the ‘BeforeUDig’ process outlined under the ‘Safe Digging’ tab on the Northpower website. By using this process, you are able to more accurately identify the area to be located as you have full control of identifying the area on a map. At the same time this minimises the issues of having your information recorded incorrectly. You can use this online application 24/7 and it gives automatic feedback on Telecom and Council buried services as well - without additional applications having to be made. Using this service will allow us in future to move to a more automated approach with a much faster response time (a matter of minutes). So – before you consider digging where buried cables may be, check out our website and find out what you should know before you start. It is better to be prepared and not take any risks that could put your life in danger. You should apply at least 48 hours before you need to dig (but preferably 10 days ahead of time), to give us time to produce a location map, then call you and organise a free site visit if requested.

Memories from the past flooded into Pouto School when teacher, Sonja King, treated the students with a visit in her 1939 P8 Chrysler straight flathead six.

Ms King’s father owned the car many years ago when she was growing up in Auckland.

“He and my uncle fully restored the vehicle and dad used it as a wedding car and my two sisters and I used it at our weddings,” said Ms King.

“Dad sold it in 2001 due to health issues and I happened to see it outside a shop in Whangarei a little while ago. I told my partner that was my dad’s car. He didn’t believe me but it still has my parents’ names faintly etched on the number plate.

“I walked around the shop to find the owner and explained the story and asked the gentleman to give me the first option if he ever wanted to sell it.”

p Pouto School students were treated to a piece of history when teacher Sonja King brought her 1939 P8 Chrysler to school

Recently Ms King saw it in a driveway in Dargaville as the owner’s son had come to look for her.

His dad decided the time had come to pass it back.

“We received it over the school holidays. My father is no longer with us but my son drove it down to Auckland for gran and my mum to see. My uncle is going to re-upholster the seats again and refresh it.

“Gran is 95 at the end of the year and was thrilled to see it back in the family again.

“I took it to school at the beginning of the term as news and showed the children. They were really excited to see it and thought the car from the old days was like a couch to sit in — nice and comfy — with gangster doors. We are very grateful to the owners for coming to find me.” ¢

295 Tangowahine Settlement Road WestThis attractive yet improvable farm is within easy commuting distance of Dargaville or Whangarei and produced 44,000

kg milk solids last season. Half of the property comprises of flat, naturally-fertile marine clay soils complemented by a

useful balance of easy-contoured hill. You can keep an eye on what´s happening on the farm from your modern four

bedroom home. The property is tucked away in a private spot, yet is convenient for agricultural contractors and also

handy to work, schooling, and lifestyle opportunities.

The farm is well set up for easy management by one person - the vendor comments that the cowshed flows well, the

calving pad is handy and the scattering of native trees provide good shelter for the stock. There is a twelve-aside

cowshed, effluent is irrigated, soil fertility is good, and pastures are mostly ryegrass-clover.

Just walk in and start producing - the vendors have made the tough decision to move on - ring now to arrange a viewing.

Inspiration from Golden Bayu by Ayla Miller

Telling tales of hardship, perseverance and sheer determination, the author of Hard Country; A Golden Bay Life, Robin Robilliard, spoke to a group at Dargaville Library about her bestselling memoir.

The 80-year-old mother of four, farmer’s wife and writer, recounted her experiences coming from a dysfunctional home to starting her married life on a farm in Golden Bay named Rocklands, separated from the rest of the country by Takaka Hill.

Robin and her husband Garry were determined to make a life for themselves despite the harsh landscape where they made their home.

“It was our own land and that was the important thing,” she said. “I realised early on that no-one was going to hand me anything on a plate.”

The book follows her life through various jobs from nursing to working at the cement works, until she secured writing jobs for Auckland Weekly which later became the NZ Weekly, and then

school journals, the Country Readers and two series of social study books for Price Milburn.

She then studied overseas countries for the Dominion newspaper in Wellington and others in the 1980’s once her children had grown up.

“I was always writing, right from the early days,” Robin said.

Her memoir recounts some of the history of the Golden Bay area, describing the characters she came across and the changes the area saw over the almost 60 years she and her family have lived there.

The memoir is her first adult non-fiction book and signed copies of Hard Country; A Golden Bay Life are available from Moran’s Bookshop in Dargaville for $39.99. ¢

Adventures on horsebacku by Ann Morgan

The Dargaville Dalmatian Social Club are holding their third annual Horse Trek on Saturday, November 14, at Waiotira.

“Last year was very successful with fun had by all at Glinks Gully along the beach and the surrounding farmland,” said organiser Venessa Anich.

“If you have a horse come and join us for a great day of riding. It is the perfect way for you and your horse to get back into the riding season after the winter period.

“It is a farm ride this year including some bush, riding along the Manganui River, and around a wetland. The trek will start at 10am sharp and there is a lunchtime exit option if needed. A famously delicious lunch will be provided.” Under-16-year-old riders must have

reasonable riding ability and be accompanied by an adult, and a disclaimer must be signed before you ride out on the day.

Long distance travellers have the option to stay on the farm the Friday night before the trek. You need to be self-sufficient and there will be a paddock to put your horse in.

The cost is $45 for adults and $30 for under 16-year-olds with all proceeds going towards repainting the inside of the Dalmatian Hall in Dargaville.

For bookings and enquiries contact Venessa on 09 439 5900 — 0220 439 839 or email [email protected]. ¢

Community gives backu by Ayla Miller

Three Dargaville residents are in the running to receive recognition for their work in the community and have been shortlisted for the Dargaville Person of the Year competition.

Samantha Van Buskirk of Kaipara Kitty Haven, Gary ‘Maggot’ Murdoch of Dargaville Volunteer Fire Brigade and Marion McEwing of Cool Bananas, are vying for the title in the competition’s second year.

Competition organiser Erica Tebbutt says there were a number of outstanding nominations but three stood out.

“These people are actively creating positive change in our community and they optimise what it means to be a part of a small town. Whoever wins the title this year will be able to share the profits with their nominated group just in time for Christmas.”

Samantha Van Buskirk moved to Dargaville in November last year and noticed there was no SPCA in the Kaipara. Since then she has found 60 homes for cats and kittens of Dargaville. If she wins, the money will go into a de-sexing programme.

Gary Murdoch is a well known community member and has served almost 50 years with the Dargaville the Fire Brigade. If Gary is voted the winner he will put money towards smoke alarms for community homes.

Marion McEwing has been supporting Cool Bananas by assisting the team on school visits in Dargaville for four years

and will put the money into this project if she wins.

The group is largely self funded and teaches life skills and values with a Christian perspective.

Voting is now open and people can vote as many times as they like. Each vote costs $1 and can be placed at any ASB bank in store or online into account 12-3098-0003798-00 referencing the first name of the chosen contender. Voting closes on Friday, December 4 at 4pm. ¢

FESTIVE FEAST

Classic rock and festive fareu by Andy Bryenton

It’s not often that the people of Dargaville get the chance to groove to the sounds of Fleetwood Mac — live on stage.

So when the next best thing — a thoroughly convincing Fleetwood Mac tribute band — took to the stage at the Northern Wairoa Hotel this Labour Weekend, it was dancing room only. A record crowd turned out to watch a lovingly crafted imitation of the 70’s rock icons, famous for their tumultuous personal lives as well as their chart-topping singles.

Lead singer Stevie Nicks, who defined the fashion styles of the era, was so ably depicted that patrons would have sworn they had been transported back to 1977.

Hotel owner Darryl was most pleased with the response, with many patrons coming early to enjoy a buffet dinner before the show. Next up the Northern Wairoa hotel have booked a tribute to country legend Dolly Parton, whose crossover hits and duets with the likes of Kenny Rogers have made her a household name.

Getting into the American spirit, November is also the month when folks in the States celebrate Thanksgiving.

The holiday itself may only be known to Kiwis thanks to pop culture, but the food is well worth a bit of ‘cultural exchange’. A mouthwatering example is the practice of keeping the traditional Thanksgiving turkey moist and succulent by slow roasting it wrapped in streaky bacon. If the thought of tender turkey and crispy bacon sounds appealing, head over to

the Aratapu Tavern and tuck in! Finally, a message of safety for Guy Fawkes eve — have fun, but make sure that your pets, animals, kids and property are kept safe.

Always read the instructions on fireworks, and have emergency measures on hand in case of accidents!. ¢

A Kiwi tradition re-ignitedu by Andy Bryenton

It’s the big match-up which defines many a summer day for the average Kiwi — tackle the lawn, then fire up the BBQ for some daylight savings entertaining.

The fine old tradition of cooking sizzlers outdoors may have come over with our nautical ancestors — even the word ‘barbecue’ comes from an old 17th century Spanish sailor’s term for an impromptu beach fry-up. Sailors, sick of hardtack and salted beef, would catch a wild pig and, unwilling to wait for the ship’s cook, would build a latticework of cannon ramrods, making a metal grid to roast their feast.

The Kiwi BBQ tradition is carried on with a little more finesse these days, thanks to 105 years of innovation by local company Masport. Not content with just building mowers to cut back the backyard jungle, the team from Mount Wellington have been perfecting the grill for many years as well.

The modern Masport is able to perform all the duties of an indoor kitchen, complete with rotisserie, a hood to keep in the heat and flavour, six adjustable gas burners and even room for a wok — international cuisine can share space with the traditional steaks and sausages.

It has been a matter of some discussion over the years why some gentlemen who profess to have no place in the kitchen become master chefs outdoors; perhaps the options available from a modern BBQ bring out some hidden talents!

If a BBQ get-together is planned for your summer, it’s time to give your plates and gas jets a good clean. Degrease and scrape down all surfaces, check

the safety and integrity of gas lines, valves and bottles, and give the grill a test fire to make sure all is working well. And if your trusty hotplate is looking a bit sad, be sure to take a look at the new, more modern options which can turn any patio or deck into a five-star culinary powerhouse. You never know — you might just be able to give the indoor oven a well needed rest over the summer! ¢

Take living it easy, outsideSummertime, and it’s time to enjoy outdoor living — time for backyard barbecues and watching the sun go down over shared conviviality.

It can be a simple barbecue station, or even a more comprehensive outdoor kitchen as a centre of entertaining or family enjoyment.

A simple and straightforward outdoor kitchen can be set up by any DIY-Kiwi homeowner and here are some tips to get you started.

You may have an existing deck area which is a good start. But if not, consider paving or tiling an outdoor area. The surface will be be easy to clean, pressure wash, and will stand up to lots of traffic.

Establishing the floor layout and material of your outdoor kitchen is key to building the foundation of your space. If you are on a deck consider re-staining or painting and ensure that the deck is in top condition. Proper flooring will not only complete the overall look, but add

durability and value to the end product. Keep in mind safety aspects because the area may well be near a swimming pool or spa tub. Choose materials that meet safety criteria, stay away from flooring that may be too slick or rugged, and select a material that can endure food spills and grease.

Placing the barbecue or grill away from the entrance to the home will help reduce foot traffic past a potential hazard as well as keep smoke and cooking smells out of the house itself. So have a good idea of the general wind pattern and orient your cooking source accordingly.

It might also be a good idea to consider the proximity of the household kitchen to the entertaining or family area – to save long treks with food and condiments, plates and other necessities. ¢

Island expansion a successA D V E RT O R I A L

The isolated community of Great Barrier Island lies only a few miles off the Northland shore, but in terms of accessibility it’s a world away.

With a small fleet of vehicles on the road, but many more working the land, and small engines powering everything from boats to generators to pumps, one of the most important resources for island folk is mechanical know-how. Keeping things working is vital when a round trip to Auckland can cost hundreds of dollars.

Cue an inspiration from Dargaville. Daniel, from auto electrical and supply

A generational change

Godfrey’s Motors has been a long-standing institution for Dargaville motorists — a popular pit-stop for repairs, warrants and tune-ups. Now the business itself is receiving a spot of tuning and fettling, with a new face at

the helm — or should that be behind the wheel? Long-standing owner Errol and office administrator Pam have handed over control of the business to Errol’s son Graham and his partner Becky, making this a multi-generational workshop. Errol will stay on to lend his years of experience to the new enterprise, while new auto electrician Denis has come on board to offer a range of services to Godfrey’s customers under the hood. The entire team would like to thank their many loyal customers, and promise to continue the very strong reputation which they have earned over the years. ¢

company DAE noted that another local Dargaville businessman was recovering a large amount of dead batteries from the island for recycling.

This led him to a ‘reconnaissance’ mission, sounding out the possibility of opening the island’s first auto supply store.

The results were resounding — and plans were undertaken to expand DAE into Great Barrier, in the small settlement of Claris.

The very hardy, self-sufficient population of the island — who extensively use ‘off the grid’ energy, hence their battery turnover — expressed enthusiasm that from now on they will not have to voyage by sea to fix their autos and small engines. It’s an interesting case of a Dargaville company expanding into the wider market to serve another small community. ¢

Son of the middleweight champu by Andy Bryenton

In its previous generation, the Ford Focus collected the crown as the world’s best selling car. A true global vehicle, the midsized hatch was born in Europe, and found huge popularity in markets as widespread as the United States and China.

Now the new generation has landed in New Zealand — more aggressively styled, with a definitive presence accentuated by the now-trademark Ford grille, bold creases and lines, and a low, road-hugging stance.

In the midsized market, the key indicators of success are practicality and economy — both of which are served well by the new iteration of the Focus. With figures as low as 6.7 litres per 100 kilometers, and a peppy new 1500cc ecoboost engine under the hood, the Focus delivers something more as well — it’s decidedly fun to drive. Sitting behind the wheel you also notice the sense of quiet; a lack of road noise, a contented purr from that 132kW mill and the scenery moves backwards effortlessly.

Looking back at the ancestors of this nimble little five seater, it’s staggering to see how much safety and information tech has been added, while keeping a proportionate price. The well-loved Escorts and Lasers of the past would have been green with envy at the SYNC2 infotainment and navigation system fitted to all 2015 Focus models, let alone other options such as hands free automatic park assist.

Ford have understandably high hopes for the successor to one of their best selling cars of all time. With both this 1500cc offering, a diesel powered option as a wagon, and a hot hatch spec ST Focus in the lineup, the boys from Dearborn seem to have all the boxes ticked and the bases covered. The new Focus will also be a big part of

the forthcoming Blue Oval Roadshow, a travelling showcase of Ford’s direction

and stable, coming to Dargaville on the 20th and 21st of this month. ¢

p The new Ford Focus carries on a bloodline with its roots in both rallying and urban practicality
