Although the big walk — and also run, swim, kayak or climb — aims to raise $10,000 for Ronald McDonald House Charities, Brandon says that for him it is also an inner journey.

“I’ve been in trouble in the past and I wanted to show young people that there’s more to life than sitting watching TV and playing Xbox. Already I’ve seen and experienced the most amazing things, and I’ve been overwhelmed by the good nature of my fellow Kiwis.”

A spokesperson for Ronald McDonald House Charities says they appreciate Brandon’s support and are excitedly tracking his progress.

“What he is doing takes determination

and sheer guts — similar to what many of our families with sick children face every day.”

Brandon left Cape Reinga on February 1 and hopes to complete the full circuit within 130 days, but is philosophical about his chances. Family and friends are providing ongoing support along the way and posting updates of his travels on Facebook.

“Fellow walkers are welcome to join me any time along the route.”

The Kaipara Commissioners bid you a warm welcome to our region’s largest event.

Along with the best the agricultural and pastoral sectors have to offer, this year's Northland Field Days also showcase the Kaipara to the thousands of visitors and the many exhibitors who travel here from all over the country, and beyond.

The hardworking volunteers who make up the field days organising committee are expecting more than 25,000 people through the gates over the three days of the event. They will be hosted by some 550 exhibitors. The flow-on boost for local suppliers of goods and services can’t be underestimated.

As a predominantly rural district, the technological, operational, and indeed scientific advances on show, alongside the latest in farm machinery and services, are of immense interest and hopefully great practical use.

But the Northland Field Days are also a chance for town to meet country, and alongside the pragmatic appeal, there is also the opportunity to enjoy social

contact and entertainment, with a wide variety of activities on offer. This year the Field Days also provide a welcome diversion from the ongoing worries the weather brings to our community, with the prolonged dry spell causing increasing concern.

Water restrictions may be necessary in some areas, but we all have our hopes on a forecast of rain sometime soon.

For now though, we trust you enjoy the 27th Northland Field Days, and have a safe journey to and from the event.

A matriarch farewelled Transport role for Sabin by Paul Campbell

Centenarian, Miss Mavis Smith, was farewelled last Friday in a simple country ceremony at the Matakohe War Memorial Hall, adjacent to The Kauri Museum she helped create 50 years ago.

There was standing room only, with those attending spilling onto the forecourt outside, as relatives and friends heard of her life at nearby Totara House, where she was born on November 9, 1910 and lived until her death.

Celebrant, Dennise Brownlie recalled a lady of prim and proper demeanour who left a legacy of old fashioned manners to her wide diaspora of relatives, and indeed to those involved in The Kauri Museum, which became part of her life.

Other relatives told of a woman who was a treasured aunt, a weaver, a dyer, a traveller, a cook, and a poet among myriad accomplishments in her long life.

“She was our matriarch, a living part of our museum and its family,” said CEO Bet Nelley. “In fact she was one of the reasons we all come to work each day, a living reminder of the heritage we strive to preserve.”

Mavis and her siblings had gathered over cups of tea in the kitchen of Totara House after the former Matokohe Hall was destroyed by fire, and vowed to set up a museum. It opened in modest form in 1962, to grow in size and stature to a world-recognised repository of

The appointment adds to Mr Sabin’s job on Social Services and Regulations Review Select Committees. “To be asked by the Prime Minister to take up the deputy-chair role on a third committee is very pleasing,” he said.

“Regarding the bridges, I have had a research assistant gathering information for the past six months, looking into the past decisions to stonewall replacing the bridges, as part of a handful of problem issues across Northland and the need to deal with them in a strategic manner.”

He said the committee appointment, while he came from a perspective of the government’s orders of the day, also meant he gained valuable insights into the working relationship between policy-making and its implementation by the New Zealand Transport Authority.

The NZTA recently closed Hardies Bridge at Matakohe for six hours of repairs, with traffic diverted inland through a 25 minute gravel road detour.

The transport select committee considers matters such as industrial law, transport and roading.

Mavis Smith was laid to rest alongside her family at Matakohe.

information on the kauri forests and industry that opened up Northland.

After simple and sincere tributes, the casket was carried from the hall and across the road to the Matakohe Cemetery, the route flanked by an honour guard of staff and volunteers of the museum she so treasured.

In an equally simple graveside ceremony, Emily Mavis Smith was laid to rest beside her family.

Back at the hall, the teapots were filled, and country farmhouse fare rolled out, for an afternoon tea party of which Mavis would  havethoroughly approved.

Northland MP Mike Sabin says his recent promotion to the role of deputy chairman of the Transport and Industrial Relations Select Committee will give him a greater insight into his electorate transport issues, including the background to the issues around the ‘band aid’ bridges at Matakohe.

Faces from the pastRe-pile for ‘Ruatuna’Hard on the heels of a major refurbishment of the Kaipara North Head Lighthouse, a specialist restoration team is now re-piling ‘Ruatuna’, the 136 year old Hukatere homestead of former Prime Minister Gordon Coates.

The team, Jim Rowland, Adam Stevens and Peter Risbridge, spent last month living ‘on the job’ at Pouto and commuting daily across the dunes. The $100,000 New Zealand Historic Places Trust project entailed repairs to the glass light-house dome, the replacement of rotten timbers and wooden detailing, a re-roof and a total repaint of the 128 year old lighthouse.

Jim says they’ll return next year “to take out some more rot”, but later in the season, to avoid the extreme weather the team experienced last month. “It was unavoidable, as it was the only time we could get the scaffolding, but we won’t need such an elaborate set up next time.”

“It was hard work with the heat and constant wind, but we all really enjoyed it. It’s a great place down there, and it was nice to breathe life back into such an iconic building — she’s a lovely old girl!”

NZHPT’s northern manager, Natalie McCondach, says new H5 treated

piles are being installed at ‘Ruatuna’ homestead beneath existing bearers, between existing piles.

“Best practice conservation dictates that access be gained from under the house, and not through the floorboards. Space under the house is tight, which makes it a very difficult job indeed. “

‘Ruatuna’s’ garage — built in about 1912 — has also recently been restored and repaired to its original condition.

“Once the re-pile is complete the garage and homestead will be repainted in existing colours to afford these very important buildings the best possible long-term protection.”

Dargaville man Brian Warmington has recently come across this photo amongst old family treasures. His uncle, Edgar Warmington, always known as ‘Blot’, is standing on the right. Blot was killed on Crete May 20th 1941, the second of his family to lose his life in battle.

Now Brian is keen to know the names of the others in the photo. Perhaps one of these Second World War soldiers is your grandfather, or perhaps your father?

They were possibly all mates hailing from Northern Wairoa and coming together in Papakura Camp to begin

training with the 21st Battalion in January 1940.

A Battalion history tells that not all were fitted out with a proper uniform in those first weeks.

The photo is labelled ‘American Photo Framing Company, Karangahape Road, Auckland’ and was probably taken just before the soldiers sailed for Egypt in May 1940.

If you can identify any of these rather pensive looking men please ring the Kaipara Lifestyler 09 439 6933 so we can name them before the photo goes to the Dargaville Museum.

The theme for children’s day is ‘treasure our children’ and to celebrate it, community groups are rallying together to put on a free community expo in Riverside Gardens in Dargaville on March 2 with the grand finale being a performance by the Polkadots.

Free expo in the gardens

Sport Northland, Skip Kaipara, Child Youth and Family, Kaipara District Council, and the Northern Wairoa Boating Club and Hikuwai O Kaipara Waka Ama are among the groups involved in bringing the community bouncy castles, treasure hunts, sausage sizzles, spot prizes, games, raft races, waka ama and more.

The Polkadots, described by Skip co-ordinator Yvette Gilchrist as ‘New Zealand’s female version of the Wiggles’, will perform at around 1pm.

The Auckland based group have completed a national tour and have a special connection to Dargaville with member Sarah Midgley living in Omamari.

“I love it,” says Sarah who has been performing with the group since they began four years ago.

All four members of the Polkadots are mothers and have 11 children between them.

“They are our biggest fans,” adds

Sarah, “I myself have three daughters, two attending Dargaville primary school.”

“We write and record all our own material which is largely inspired by our children. We are really happy to be able to support a local children’s event especially in the community where I live.”

Sport Northland community advisor, Roxanne Kelly is expecting over 1000 people to attend.

“We need to treasure our children and make the most of community events to give our children memories and good times,” says Yvette.

The event will begin at noon and finish around three and will incorporate participants in their DIY rafts and waka ama racing down the river from the Hansen’s boating ramp in Te Kopuru and Roxanne adds there will be an opportunity for beginners to have paddle in the wakas.

A political head start by Rose Rees-Owen

Kaipara high school students have the opportunity to get to parliament in a selection process underway by Northland MP Mike Sabin, to recruit a running mate to represent the interests of Northland in this year’s Youth Parliament.

The programme involves 16-17 year old secondary school students who show an interest in politics, youth issues and their community, and provides them with an opportunity to represent their peers within parliament in the middle year of each parliamentary term.

“I’ve written to all of the secondary schools in the Northland electorate, inviting applications and I’m very keen to hear from people who want to be involved,“ Mr Sabin said

The selection process involves an essay of 1000 words or less, on the topic ‘Your Vision for the Northland economy’, with short-listed candidates presenting a five-minute speech on their vision, and answering questions from a panel which will include Mr Sabin and other invited guests.

“The successful candidate will be nominated by me on April 5, and if approved will spend July 16 and 17 sitting in the Northland electorate MP’s seat in the House of Representatives, with 120 other Youth MPs from across New Zealand.

“It will be an exciting time for the successful candidate in parliament; however, I am also looking for someone who can accompany me to some events and attend clinics in a shadow capacity during the second part of this year,” Mr Sabin added.

“This will give the Northland youth MP a real sense of the role.”

Prospective applicants should approach their school principal or contact Mr Sabin’s Wellington office on 04 817 8384.

Sea scouts regatta by Rose Rees-Owen

Around 300 Sea Scouts from all over northland will gather at the Kai Iwi Lakes for a boating regatta over the weekend of March 8 to 10.

For the past decade the scouts have been competing at the lakes and Dargaville scouts group leader Brian Burnett says while there are no sea scouts in Kaipara it’s an impressive sight to see around 50 sail boats on the water.

“There are competitions including seamanship, rowing, sailing, kayaking and an ironman where contestants will swim, kayak and run,” says Brian

adding that scouts will also be judged on their camping techniques.

Whangarei group leader, Mike Bull says they choose the lakes because they are fresh water, non-tidal, have well defined boundaries as well as a great camping site making it a safe and enjoyable destination.

“We host scout groups from Auckland to as far north as Doubtless Bay and the lakes is a great venue.”

Mangawhai hosts sports

There’s a great sporting weekend on land and sea in store for Mangawhai over February 23 and 24.

The Avantiplus Mangawhai Triathlon kicks off at 8.30am Saturday and covers a 500m swim or 1.5km kayak, a 17km cycle and a 5km run to the finish tape.

Prize giving will take place at the finish area at the end of Mangawhai Heads Road at approximately 11am. Entry registrations close on February 20.

Meanwhile the 20th annual Lifeguard Longboard Nationals will get underway out of the Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Lifeguard Service clubrooms.

The event is open to all current and past lifeguards, and features events for junior, senior and master categories, and promises that ‘every year the event is greeted by good times — both in the water and on dry land.’

Septic Systems are no different to a human being — they react well to being cared for and react badly when they are not.

Some ways to keep your system healthy are:

• It is recommended to desludge your system every 3–4 years

• Add Biozyme the enzyme booster to your system

• Avoid using bleach or disinfectant around sinks, drains and toilets

• Use Biozyme to clean kitchens, toilet, showers and basins

• Avoid using garbage disposal units• Avoid flushing pads or nappies into

Northland had a smelly problem with his

septic system especially when they used the laundry machine on the weekend. “I was unsure why the system was not operating as it got pretty smelly, so a friend gave me some Biozyme to try and I added small amounts of Biozyme to the shower, toilet, sink and laundry tub regularly and the smells have gone. We now use it to clean the kitchen, shower and toilets as it does the job, adds some good enzymes to keep our system healthy and we are not using harsh chemicals.”

Awakening a sleeping giantDargaville residents, David Stevens, Gavin Bainbridge and Mark Schreurs are rekindling rock climbing on Tokatoka and Maungaraho, climbs that have waxed and waned in popularity since the 60s.

Now in his late 20s, David began rock climbing at 16, but when he moved to Dargaville nine years ago he had to stop because he didn’t have a climbing partner or the right equipment.

His passion was renewed when his cousin Gavin immigrated from England and his friend Mark moved to Dargaville for work and he became curious about the two rocks which make up the ‘sleeping giant.’

“I love the challenge of solving a problem in a physical way, although a lot of climbing is done in the mind.”

He discovered bolted top anchors and the remains of past climbs adding that out on the open rock he can focus on the task at hand forgetting other problems as well as enjoying the fresh air and amazing views.

“I tramped both peaks early into my time here, but only seriously looked into climbing on Maungaraho in the last couple of months. We have been going out at least once a week and either abseiling or top roping climbs.”

He hopes to lead climbs once he has trained up Gavin and Mark.

Back to back fundraiser

Funds raised are earmarked for a Year 5 and 6 trip to Rotorua and the refurbishment of the Junior Block.

Organiser Ngaire Wilcox says having the double fundraiser at the same venue on the same weekend saves set up costs, but both events are quite different in style and catering.

“The horse trek is more structured than the trail ride, with guides, and a formal ride-off at 9.30am,” she says.

“Morning and afternoon teas and a lavish sheep on a spit lunch are included in the ticket price.”

Riders provide their own horses, and are encouraged to pre-register to allow for catering.

The 35 km Sunday trail ride loop is open from 9pm-3pm and offers a less formal day out, with riders, once registered, riding as they please.

Free tea and coffee will be provided

for registered riders, with picnic style food and drink available for purchase.

Children are more than welcome at both events, and the trail ride has a fully supervised kids’ track for novices and learners.

For further information and registration: Horse Trek phone Karina Allen on 09 431 8344, or for the trail ride contact Mark Flannagan on09 431 8900.

Now the grand old building, at the crossroads of the town centre is going under the hammer, with an auction set to decide who will take it into the 21st century.

It’s a rare opportunity to own a piece of Kaipara history. The hotel itself dates from the establishment of Dargaville, thought this most recent incarnation is not the first building to carry the Northern Wairoa name.

Inside, colonial design and fittings reflect the opulence of a bygone age — from the wood panelled hallways and carved banisters to the large dining room with its fireplace and vintage furniture.

In modern times the Northern Wairoa Hotel accommodates the local T.A.B, a lounge bar, and two

tiers of accommodation (including the apartments once visited by our head of state, Queen Elizabeth II). Popular with backpackers and travellers, the extensive complex also houses the Dargaville branch of the national chain Thirsty Liquor.

This March the entire Northern Wairoa Hotel premises will be up for auction, and interest is running high as to what potential new owners may do with the prime location.

Plans to boost tourism, encourage tour groups to visit and to re-invigorate the Dargaville town centre  maywell be moved into the spotlight  asthis irreplaceable piece of our local heritage enters a new chapter of its history.

Hammer to comedown on historic pubThe Northern Wairoa Hotel has been at the heart of Dargaville since colonial times — not just a ‘watering hole’ but a meeting place, a community hub, and even a stop off for royalty.

Hair razing for Project Promise

A bout of hair razing at Woody’s Winners in Wellsford on Saturday February 9 raised $432.30 for Project Promise, with pledges up to $3000 to come. Organiser Robin Burton (second from right) says thirteen members of her family have been shaved for the cause so far, including her brother Roger in Perth.

Paparoa school student Sam Parker rummaged through the Duffy Books box to choose his favourite. As part of the Duffy Books in Homes initiative students are rewarded with books for good behaviour and Sam demonstrated ‘good relationship skills.’ “Students are learning to get along with each other and help each other out, which is exciting to see,” said Principal Kim Tavinor.

Kaurilands clients fill the pantry

Holistic view of health

The clients at Tokatoka’s Kaurilands Skills Centre are turning donations of excess produce from Kaipara gardens to good use, bottling fruit and makingjam, pickles, chutneys and sauces for their own table.

Osteopath Chris Longley is proud to serve the people of the Kaipara District, helping his patients lead full and healthy lives and recover from the aches, pains and strains of modern living. Since 2005 he’s been practising Osteopathy — a holistic, ‘big picture’ form of treatment which looks at the body as a whole, rather than simply treating the symptoms of pain and injury.

“We can help with just about everything,” he says, “from acute treatments for specific injuries to more generalised treatments, covering nerves, muscles, even the circulatory and digestive systems.”

A common confusion is that Osteopaths work solely with bones, but in fact this medical discipline goes far further with its hands-on approach. Developed in America in the 1860s by Andrew Taylor Still, a student of human anatomy, Osteopathy is a thoroughly modern method with proven results.

“In fact, a lot of what I do is about

telling people what to change in their lifestyle,” says Chris. “Good advice is just as important to ongoing health as treatment itself. Historical factors, work factors and more all come into the equation.”

Osteopathy is suitable for all kinds of people from all walks of life, and Chris has successful treated everyone from infants to the elderly, sportspeople, office workers and farmers. Here in the Kaipara this last group are of special concern, as hard rural work can place huge demands on the body.

Chris is putting his five years of intensive study and his further years of practical experience to use across the district, working with patients to affect change in their health and intheir lives.

He operates a clinic in Dargaville on Wednesdays, and one in Mangawhai on Tuesdays to keep up with demand for his skills.

“Hear The Difference”

Cindy Vincent, vocational programmer at Kaurilands, which provides residency and vocational opportunities for adults with intellectual disabilities, says that their weekly food preserving classes are extremely popular and fit right in with the ethos of the centre.

“As part of our life skills programmes, along with the benefits of exercise and good eating, we put a lot of emphasis on self-sufficiency. Our

clients are learning all the skills needed to survive on their own — gardening, cooking, preserving and even butchering meat.”

Cindy says they currently have no fruit trees of their own, so the centre is requesting fruit from the public that would otherwise go to waste.

“Just give us a call and we will come and pick it up,” she says. Contact Cindy on: 09 439 2145 or 027 214 4443.

Dirty Weekends coming upMaungaturoto’s Otamatea Repertory Theatre is only weeks away from opening ‘Dirty Weekends’, a play by Roger Hall with music by Phillip Norman.

Director, Alister Williams, says the play is the sort of comedic social commentary that Roger Hall excels at, poking gentle fun at the Kiwi passion for gardening.

“At first glance the characters may seem a little caricatured, but there’s depth — how we deal with domesticity and how alike we all are.”

Alister says he and musical director Warwick Simpson are treating the musical numbers as performance items rather than ‘songs’.

“Some of our cast are not ‘singers’ in the full sense of the word but have a real gut instinct for musical performance.”

He also has praise for ORT’s production team and particularly set builder Jeff Dyer. “The complex set incorporates three houses and their respective gardens, plus a significant amount of gardening equipment and an alarming variety of plants.”

Alister is quick to reassure audiences that the play is good clean fun. “There is a little innuendo, but the content is generally inoffensive — the dirtiest thing onstage is probably the compost bin.”

‘Dirty Weekends’ opens March 15 at the Theatre, Bickerstaffe Road, Maungaturoto.

“Kim and Kylie our trained car seat technicians will also be there to answer any questions or to give advice. Particularly since the new law says children need to be in a booster seat up till the age of 7 years.”

Their site will also feature Billy the Bus who has all the facilities for feeding and changing a baby and an art area for parents and children to play in.

Volunteers will be collecting for the appeal outside Dargaville BNZ on March 8, 11am to 12.30pm.

trade for over 30 years, so he knows the ins and outs of repairing and maintaining the perfect home from top to bottom. That means all those ‘handyman’ jobs which are best entrusted to the hands of a professional — things like painting, wallpapering, tiling, roof painting and those little repairs which are a bit beyond simple DIY.

Darryl’s company, Bagby Property Services, incorporates West Coast Waste Water Treatment, but he’s the man to call for all kinds of repairs, alterations, minor renovations, painting, wallpapering, fencing, decking and retaining walls. Older homes are a specialty, so if you have an old villa that needs some TLC, Darryl can restore it to its former glory. Darryl even works for The Historic Places Trust.

Added to his ‘toolbox’ of experience and skill is an in-depth knowledge of that most vital of household services — wastewater. That’s a good thing, because modern septic systems are far more efficient than those of

The private charitable trust owns and operates the Kaurilands Skills Centre at Tokatoka, which provides residency and vocational opportunities for adults with intellectual disabilities, and for many years has raised funds for the centre by rearing donated calves on its 100 acres.

Farmers who pledge a calf receive an ear tag and a gift, and also enter a prize draw. Kaurilands organises transport when the calf is ready to be picked up and lets the donor know the outcome of the calf’s eventual sale.

“We’ll have 500 ear tags available onsite at the Field Days,” says Kaurilands’ stock manager, Dean Franklin. “So we’re pretty optimistic

KDC Supports Community OrganisationsThree community organisations sharing space at the Kaipara District Council Field Days site are promising to provide a uniquely Kaipara experience for visitors to the KDC marquee.

Joseph Douglas, from the Kauri Coast Promotions Society, says their presence at the Field Days is a great opportunity to raise awareness of the society‘s many activities, and to recruit more volunteers.

“The society not only promotes the area to visitors, but we are also a networking hub for a variety of community projects — from the Kaipara Kai and Fun Festival to upgrading local walking tracks,” he says.

The Dargaville Museum will be setting up old dairy paraphernalia in the marquee for anyone who wants to have a churn at making butter the old fashioned way. Manager Pene McKenzie says she

hopes Field Days visitors will be inspired to venture up the hill to see more of what is on display at the Museum.

Also in the KDC tent, the Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group will feature their Flagship Sites initiative: "paddock-to-harbour” themed workshops on farms, focused on practical methods to mitigate sedimentation and eutrophication in the harbour.

“The Flagship initiative is about delivering leaders,” says IKHMG spokesperson, Leane Makey. “Landowners involved in the programme will be onsite at the Field Days to talk to farmers about their experience.”

by Sheri O’Neill

The Port Albert cucumber, grown around the Kaipara since European settlement in the 1860s, has become widely distributed through the efforts of heritage seed saving pioneer Kay Baxter, original founder of Koanga Gardens at Kaiwaka.

Cucumbers (Cucumis sativus) are thought to have been introduced from India to Mediterranean Europe 3000 years ago, and were grown by the Ancient Greeks and Romans.

In the 17th century it was believed uncooked vegetables were injurious to human health and cucumbers fit only for stock food, hence the name ‘cowcumber’.

The Port Albert variety suits Kaipara’s dry late summers, and never seems to become bitter, turning from white to bright yellow when ripe but edible from very small.

Owing to its prolific output, if you grow this cucumber you may well run out of ideas on what to do with it. As the Port Albert closely resembles the Indian dosokai and Sri Lankan kekiri cucumbers, which are cooked in soups,

The Freemasons of Northland invite all visitors to the Dargaville Field Days to visit our

display and find out what Freemasonry is all about and some of its mystery.

There are approximately 5 million Freemasons world wide and 75,000 in Australia and New Zealand.

Come and join us to make more friends and contacts locally and overseas.

Meet some local Freemasons. We would welcome new members.

Site 903, No. 2, Lifestyle Pavillion

The ancient organisation of Freemasonry traces its history back into the distant past, but in recent years this traditionally secretive community group has been looking to the future. That’s because alongside the sometimes misunderstood traditions of this long-established order runs a legacy of community service and support which greatly benefits us all.

Join in a tradition of fraternity and community

Freemasons come from all backgrounds, all walks of life and ages. Many locals will know of a friend, relative or ancestor who has been part of the Lodge. Today the local Masonic Lodges of the Kaipara (Pono Lodge, Dargaville, and Marsden Lodge, Maungaturoto) continue to fund retirement villages, health initiatives, community projects and other worthy causes.

In times past becoming a Freemason was often seen as a difficult task. But today the local Lodges are keen to attract new members who want to carry on one of the oldest traditions in western culture. They are opening their doors and visiting this week’s Field Days in a bid to find new community-spirited members.

Lodge member Paul Udall points out that many people would love to join, following the footsteps of their fathers or grandfathers, but misinformation has them confused. Freemasonry is not a religious organisation, and it welcomes people of all faiths equally. There’s no requirement of worldly power or wealth; indeed, Freemasonry is all about giving to the community, not personal gain.

Most importantly of all, it’s O.K. to talk openly about Freemasonry — about your

relatives and ancestors who have been a part of the Lodge, about wanting to join and help the local community, and about the good works achieved by Freemasons past and present.

If you would like to benefit your community and carry on a fascinating and colourful history, talk to your local Lodge members at the Field Days. There is a place for you in this ancient society, where you can meet lifelong friends, boost your confidence and do a lot of good.

Lodge member Paul Udall in Masonic regalia

Bill Guest, Farmers of New ZealandBe my Guest

The first man on the moon, astronaut Neil Armstrong, in describing his thoughts as he returned from his historic venture, said that the earth looked like a blue rounded satellite sphere with a very thin layer of atmosphere. Armstrong said upon looking at the earth, he realised how fragile we were. We humans living on earth, which was circulating at 1,000 miles an hour every 24 hours and travelling at 18,600 miles towards the milky way, had to realise that in the earth hour clock, human life had only existed a few seconds on the planet.

Environmental groups have gained an ever-increasing following in recent decades. Children in schools are taught the importance of protecting the environment and farmers, being natural environmentalists are now finding that the major condition of supplying food to

With farmers suffering the driest droughts in 38 years throughout New Zealand, severe flooding in Australia, earthquakes and flooding in China, sub-zero temperatures in the United States, one could be forgiven in thinking that maybe the world is suffering from man-made actions that are causing severe climate changes. There are even proponents who state that the world weather patterns are controlled by nations that have the science to do so.

our international markets is having good environmental controls and meeting the highest food safety standards.

There are also moves afoot to look at the impact that urban cities have on global warming. There are thousands of miles of black tar seal roads and the reflective glass that is supposedly making a contribution.

The world renowned climate change sceptic Lord Christopher Monckton is due to visit New Zealand on a ‘Climate of Freedom’ tour. Monckton claims that a United Nations Agenda 21 is designed on the notion that humans are destroying our planet and as a result every aspect of our lives needs to be controlled.

In recent years Monckton has come to public attention for holding sceptical views about man-made climate change. It is claimed that he has authored more than 100 papers on climate issues and that more than 3 million people have viewed his 2009 speech in the US giving his view of what he describes as the world ‘government’ proposed by the UN. An article he had on climate science in the Sunday Telegraph attracted 127,000 hits in two hours, apparently crashing the paper’s website. Lord Monckton was last in NZ in 2011. He was described then by the late Sir Paul Holmes as having no credibility and refused to interview him. He was shunned by the press who described that he was having difficulty having venues arranged for his then speaking tour.

Lord Monckton is touring New Zealand in April 2013. It is important that we maintain our democratic right to hear all sides of the environmental debate. He is a very thought-provoking speaker and is well worth listening to.

Farmers of New Zealand support environmental sustainability based on sound science and not mere conjecture. We support the National government’s current cautious approach to the Kyoto Protocol. We have been working with local government on ensuring that farmer effluent system standards are upheld to ensure non-contamination of streams and that district plans and regional plans, while protecting the environment must also allow for the economic and social wellbeing of our citizens.

Grey Power representatives June Klenner, Garry Hooker and Stuart Quirk met recently with Kaipara District Council Commissioner Colin Dale to be briefed on KDC progress and to air concerns. While acknowledging governance improvements effected by the commissioners, particularly those relating to CEO performance and audit and risk processes, Grey Power expressed its disappointment as to the lack of ratepayer consultation undertaken by commissioners on risk management policies and the proposed Rates Validation Bill.

Grey Power stressed that, although the commissioners’ Terms of Reference envisaged consultation with the general community and iwi, such a course had not been followed. Instead, commissioners, who are not elected, had unilaterally determined to proceed with a Rates Validation Bill in the absence of consultation and the public identification of options as required by their Terms of Reference. The response that the commissioners felt that they had to act pragmatically was not considered convincing.

The absence of realistic and fair KDC rates postponement and remission policies again was mentioned by Grey Power which first raised that issue with commissioners four months

ago. It is painful for Grey Power to have to record that, notwithstanding the commissioners’ acknowledgement of the rates unaffordability issue, they have taken no steps to date to address it.

The help of commissioners was sought on the replacement of Anderson’s and Hardie’s bridges which have long been of community concern. For safety reasons, the continuing use of one-way bridges on state highways is opposed by Grey Power national policy.

Grey Power was advised of the impracticality of asset sales in the current economic climate and that council’s policy of not using loan funds for operational costs is being maintained. It also was mentioned that much of council’s capital works programme is being deferred. The crucial question again was raised whether KDC is a going concern.

The communications strategy being proposed by the commissioners is not considered by Grey Power to be an adequate replacement for general and iwi consultation as instructed by the minister and Grey Power calls upon the commissioners to implement those instructions.

A long awaited tripThe Tutamoe Trailride raised $3500 for Aranga School, as well as earning an extra $1800 through catering the event, and the board of trustee’s chairperson Hinerangi Himiona says the funds will more than likely go towards a long awaited school trip.

The last big trip was in 2008 when the school went to the Outdoor Pursuits Centre on Mt Ruapehu.

“The school and community have worked hard to raise funds for extracurricular activities like trips but like many in the Kaipara, families have been feeling the pinch, but now that

we’ve raised over $5,000 in the weekend we are excited about the possibilities,” says Hinerangi.

“One weekend of hard work really pays off and there are no firm decisions yet but we are thinking of taking the whole school to Auckland.”

Her husband Bernard Makaore was

one of the main carvers on the new art work in the Auckland Zoo’s TeWao Nui section and it has always been an idea of Hinerangi’s to take the children down to see the art that was created in the Waipoua Forest.

Bernard also has connections at Auckland Museum and Hinerangi recalls one of the students from Aranga looking at the museum and asking what the old building was.

“It blew me away that she didn’t know, but if you have never seen it before then you wouldn’t — we’re really excited to give our kids experiences that they wouldn’t usually have here at home.”

Principal Cherise Wilson says she is proud of the community and feels incredibly lucky to have their support.

Kaipara Motorcycles have been the flagship showroom for big name brands Can Am and Kawasaki motorcycles for several years now, and a recent change of management promises to build on the successes of the past.

Taking the helm at the central Dargaville workshop and dealership is the team of Dale Robertson, his wife Tracy, and Mark Vuletich, well known locally for his work with Vuletich Operational Services, the engineering and electrical company he also owns. Workshop mechanics and respected technicians William Boost and Harlin Munn will remain in the service department, bringing customers the same level of expertise they have come to expect.

It’s an exciting time for the business to change hands, with Field Days sharpening up demand for quads and farm bikes this week. While the official change over occurred on the 1st of

seating the famous Japanese marquee have the UTV which started it all — the go-anywhere Mule. Can Am have been going from strength to strength in the New Zealand market with their range of hard-working quads as well, with their incredibly powerful Outlander Max 1000 still undisputedly the king of ATV muscle, beloved by hunters and farmers alike.

As the latest offerings from both Can

am and Kawasaki come in for 2013, it’s also good to know that your hard working quads and motorcycles — both agricultural, recreational and for the street — can be taken care of right here in town by the Kaipara Motorcycles service department. They’ve got the skill to handle all makes and models, as well as sourcing parts to keep your motor running season after season.

February this huge local event will be the first covered by the new team. Both Can Am and Kawasaki are offering Field Days deals on their ranges of agricultural quads, bikes and UTVs, and with a strong line up in store from both brands Dale, Tracy, Mark and the team are sure to be busy.

The ‘doctors’ for hard working farm bikes

That’s because for local Kaipara farmers, the work just keeps on coming, and they expect their quads and farm bikes to keep up. Carl is the owner of CA motorcycles, and he and Bart make up the team who keep the pistons firing for the rural trade, forging a vital link in the support chain for agri-business.

While this year’s field days kicks off just up the road in Dargaville, the hard work is still being put in on the region’s farms. Because the ATV, UTV, quad and two-wheeler have replaced the horse on Kiwi farms, this means local farmers are putting in huge miles, tackling hills, mud, streams, tracks and gravel with

their machines every day. Keeping them working requires a mixture of skill, experience and knowledge which Carl offers, repairing and servicing machines which have seen the worst Mother Nature can throw at them.

And it doesn’t stop there. The Kaipara is a playground for off road and MX riders, and their bikes also often need a little TLC from the CA Motorcycles team. It’s a testament to their abilities that sportsriders, recreational riders and farmers keep coming back, relying on Carl and Bart to see them right.

CA Motorcycles has expanded in a new direction this year, with imports coming in from the USA to meet demand

in the local market. Carl has been able to source near-new quad bikes from America which are the perfect fit for local farmers here in New Zealand, both in functionality and price. He encourages farmers to take a look at this selection before making up their mind on a new quad, as the potential savings are enormous.

CA Motorcycles is a business built on a ‘can do’ reputation — not to mention a lot of hard work! If you expect your ATV, UTV, bike or quad to work as hard as you do on the farm, talk to Carl about what he can do for you, both when it comes time to buy and when it’s time to take care of servicing and repair.

Bart and Carl are no strangers to mud, grease and hard work as they keep rural machines rolling

A U T O

You’ll find Carl Adnitt and his colleague Bart Huihui hard at work almost every day at their purpose-built Aratapu workshop.

Strong Field Days line up for auto giant

The well-known local owner of Dargaville’s Ford dealership has seen hot sun and storms, huge crowds and a varying line up from his suppliers at the Ford Motor Company over the years, but 2013 could be the best year ever for the brand.

Ford has enjoyed great success with their new, more global focus, releasing vehicles like the Mondeo and Fiesta to the acclaim of the motoring press. Added to this range, and very pertinent to the rural community, are three of the biggest names in the four wheel drive field — the Kuga, the Territory, and of course the extremely popular Ranger Ute.

At this year’s Field Days a winning

range of vehicles will be on display, with the Ranger taking pride of place among a selection which spans the city streets and country paddocks. It’s a showcase which fills three big display sites, situated on a road which Lindsay and Dargaville Ford have also named and sponsored.

At the corner of ‘Farmlands Road’ and ‘Dargaville Ford Territory’ you’ll find Lindsay and his knowledgeable staff among a gleaming collection of new Ford vehicles, promoting what may very well be the best line up in the company’s over 100 year history. And while it’s certain that a lot of attention will be paid to the Ford Ranger’s farm-friendly features, there’s sure to be plenty

Lindsay West of Dargaville Ford has watched the Northern Field Days grow from a small regional event into the rural marketing colossus it is today, supporting it year after year.

of interest in the latest Falcon, and of course the new Focus, voted best in its class for 2012 by the AA and the NZ auto writer’s guild.

Ford have been standing by Kiwi

farmers since the days of the classic Model T, and Dargaville Ford are proud to carry on this relationship by supporting their customers at the 2013 Field Days and beyond.

Dargaville Ford is a well-known local landmark, bringing over 100 years of auto excellence to Field Days in 2013. The blue oval flies proudly over their Normanby Street dealership.

The array of classic cars on display at last year’s event

Chrome and customs return to MaungaturotoFans of classic cars and bikes seem to have a new home in the North, with the little town of Maungaturoto becoming a haven for all things chopped, customised, flamed and chromed.

A big part of this appeal is down to the tireless work of the historic Maungaturoto Hotel — now a favourite destination for petrol heads keen to soak up the sun and scenery.

Last year’s Maungaturoto Hotel hot rod and custom show blew all expectations away, with a turnout so large that extra display parking had to be secured for the legions of hot-rodder’s, bikers and auto

fans who descended on the colonial pub. A great day was had by all, and the attention of custom car fans nationwide was piqued.

Now it’s all happening again, and this time Hotel staff are ready for the influx of V8s and classics. A whole new section has been added, with a flat grassy area prepared to accommodate the gleaming steel and chrome. Like all the best festivals of automobilia, this is an event for the whole family, and all the stops are being pulled out on Sunday the 3rd of March to make sure it’s a day to remember.

Last time around our photographer spotted immaculate examples of the Corvette Stingray, Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Bel Air and more, so bring your camera

along. Bring your wallet too, as this event is all about raising funds for the hard-working heroes of the Maungaturoto Volunteer Fire Brigade, and a gold coin or two will go a long way to keeping those fire trucks rolling.

As well as acres of candy paint, leather and metal, there’s going to be a bouncy castle for the kids, live music, and of course the Maungaturoto Hotel’s famous roast meals for hungry punters. Of course, if you happen to have a classic vehicle in your garage, it’s a great chance to get out and share your pride and joy with the world.

Help the Kaipara show the rest of New Zealand that we’re hardcore hotrod fans by entering your machine in the show!
