Samuel B. Westlake Lecture Announcement has been made by Dr.

Ben H. Senturia, Director of the Depart- ment of Otolaryngology, of the date of the first in an annual series of lectures to be given in memory of Dr. Samuel B. Westlake, former Consulting Otolaryngologist.

The lecture will be given on Friday, No- vember 30, 1956 at 8:00 p.m. in the Audi- torium of the Mark C. Steinberg Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Victor Goodhill, Professor of Clinical Otology at the University of Southern Cali- fornia and a member of the American Oto- logical Society, will speak on "Recent De- velopments in the Surgical and Medical Treatment of Deafness".

The lecture will be open to the public.

Surgical Technical Aide Program

After extensive studies exploring the pos- sibility of using specially trained non-pro- fessional workers in areas where they might augment the professional nursing staff, a Surgical Technical Aide Program has been started at the Hospital.

The first class of four specially selected aides began a six-month course of study in October, which includes work in such sub- jects as Elementary Anatomy and Physi- ology; Principles of Asepsis; and Operating Room Techniques. On completion of the course, the aides will assist in the care of patients in the Operating Department and will take responsibility for the care, prepa- ration and maintenance of equipment and supplies in the operating rooms. However, they will be under the direct supervision of professional nurses, and will not be al- lowed to handle or administer medications or anesthetic agents.

In their new location, the Sanatorium patients are cared for in the Chronic Disease Division on the third and fourth floors of the i Steinberg Hospital, under the direction of Dr. Franz U. The rehabilitation patients, temporarily! located on the third floor of the Steinberg! Hospital, will be moved to the first floor! after alterations are completed. Under thel direction of Dr. John W. Deyton, Medical| Director of the Division, the physically dis- abled are restored to useful and independent! living through the use of such procedures! as physical therapy, occupational therapy,! speech therapy, rehabilitation nursing, and| vocational counseling.

Patients in both of these divisions will be able to make use of the many facilities avail-] able in the medical center, including a ne\> auditorium suitable for movies and patientl recreation, a chapel for religious servicesj a patients' library, an ambulatory dining| room, and the many administrative and pro- fessional departments of the Hospital.

Recent Donations Two donations were recently received for

the purchase of medical texts for the Medi cal Library—one from Dr. Llewellyn Sale, Sr., and the other from Mrs. Harry S. Quick- silver, in honor of her 45th wedding anni versary.

Patients on the Chronic Disease Division are enjoying a television set donated to the Hospital by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Lasky in memory of Edward Lasky.

Medical Center Dedicated Approximately 3,200 people participated

in the various functions conducted during the three-day dedicatory exercises for the new Jewish Hospital medical center held October 14-16.

The first day's events included the official ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by a tea in the auditorium of the new six-story Mark C. Steinberg Memorial Hospital. On this same afternoon, a tea was held in the Moses Shoenberg Memorial (School of Nursing Building) for student nurses and their fam- ilies. Later, volunteer hostesses served as guides for those interested in taking tours of the new Hospital areas.

On Monday, October 15th, affairs held included an all-day medical session for physicians in the St. Louis area, with four nationally prominent physicians participat- ing. They were Dr. Lester R. Dragstedt, Chairman of the Department of Surgery, University of Chicago; Dr. Louis M. Rousse- lot, Professor of Clinical Surgery, New York University College of Medicine; Dr. William Dameshek of Boston, President of the In- ternational Society of Hematology; and Dr. Alfred Gellhorn, Director of the Institute on Cancer Research, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University. There was also a luncheon for graduate nurses, at which service awards were presented, and a banquet for medical staff members given in memory of Dr. Samuel Gray, former director of laboratories and research at the Hospital, which featured Dr. W. Barry Wood, Jr., Vice President of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, as principal speaker.

The third day of festivities included a luncheon for members of the Women's Auxiliary, at which 11 women's organiza- tions participating in the Hospital's pro- gram were honored; and the concluding dedication banquet, at which Dr. Jack Masur, Assistant Surgeon General and

| Chief, Bureau of Medical Facilities, spoke. Employees of the Hospital were honored

at a tea on Sunday, October 21, and were conducted by volunteers on tours of new areas.

The dedication climaxed a two-year con- struction and expansion program to provide physical facilities for the new medical cen- ter, created by the merger in 1951 of four health and welfare agencies—Jewish Hos- pital of St. Louis, Miriam Rosa Bry Con- valescent-Rehabilitation Hospital, Jewish Sanatorium, and the Jewish Medical Social Service Bureau.

New Procedure Announced Dr. Sol Sherry, Director of the Division

of Medicine, has announced the introduc- tion of a new procedure, known as cardiac catheterization, into the program of the Division.

This process involves insertion of a tube or catheter into the heart and nearby blood vessels for the purpose of making measure- ments of pressure relationships and of the chemical constituents of the blood in var- ious areas. Such a technique is invaluable in the diagnosis and clinical evaluation of many types of heart disease, particularly those of a congenital nature. It is also useful in making decisions about the performance of cardiac surgery.

Cardiac catheterizations are done by Dr. Herbert Zimmerman, Clinical and Research Associate in the Division of Medicine, utiliz- ing expensive measuring and recording ap- paratus. Funds for the installation of the necessary equipment were made available through an anonymous grant received earlier this year for the establishment of a Cardio- Pulmonary Laboratory.

Nurses Receive Scholarships Full scholarships have been awarded to

nineteen nursing students in the Hospital's School of Nursing.

Ten of the scholarships are being made possible by the St. Louis Jewish Scholarship Foundation. One each is being provided by

the Jewish Hospital Medical Center Aux- iliary; Gertrude Charities Society; Soropti- mists International of St. Louis; American Legion Auxiliary, Ninth District; and Marion Memorial Hospital. Four additional scholar- ships are being awarded by interested citizens in the community.

The scholarships cover all expenses, in- cluding fees, books and uniforms.

Recent Appointments New additions to the administrative

staff of the Hospital are John Fordon, Di- rector of Public Relations and Hospital In- formation Officer, and Milton C. Kentes, Personnel Director.

Mr. Fordon is a graduate of the University of Illinois, holding a B.S. degree in Chem- istry, and the Starr King School for the Ministry at Berkeley, California, where he received the degree of B.D. In graduate work at the University of California, he majored in the field of psychology, and is presently working on his Th.D. Prior to his appointment at the Hospital, he held Uni- tarian pastorates at Fort Wayne, Indiana and St. Louis, Missouri. He is married and has two children.

Mr. Kentes, a graduate of St. Louis Uni- versity with an M.S. degree, majored in the field of clinical psychology. Prior to his em- ployment at the Hospital, he was a qualifi- cations rating examiner for the Civil Service Commission. He also worked as a clinical psychologist for the St. Louis State Training School, and as a staff assistant in job evalu- ation for McDonnell Aircraft Corporation. Mr. Kentes is single.
