RENOVATION OF THE ARYUB MOVIE THEATER TRANSFORMING IT INTO A CULTURAL CENTER

Kabul, 2013 – As an act of resistance against the feared return of
extremism in Afghanistan, four young Afghan artsts decide to
open a cultural center in the heart of the capital.
Shab and her friends are ready for anything to fulfll their bold
dream.
ROLES AND ACTORS

SHAB works as a reporter for one of Afghanistan’s main television networks.
SIKANDAR, cameraman, is in love with Shab but is too reserved to reveal his feelings.
IMAL is a guitar player and a singer. He runs a music store in the old bazaar.
MUSTAFA is a painter and turns into a rebel graffit artst at night.
The lead roles are played by Aftaab, a troop of talented Afghan comedians.

The flm is shot in the heart of Kabul unveiling
an unknown and hidden side of the city.

THE CULTURAL CENTER
After exploring all of Kabul, the friends discover an old abandoned movie theater, which becomes the refuge of all their hopes and dreams. They put their savings together and undertake renovaton work. Unfortunately, there are many obstacles on their path…
Once the most luxurious venue in the country, Cinema Aryub will be refurbished over the course of the film and handed back to the community after shooting has ended.

TIMELINE
The shootng of the flm and renovaton work will take place between January and March 2014.
The project is the opportunity to strengthen Afghan films, the governmental cinema institute, as well as train a group of aspiring Afghan movie makers.

THE DIRECTOR
Louis Meunier arrived in Afghanistan in March 2002. He explored Afghanistan crossing the country by horse in 2005 and playing on Kabul´s buzkashi team for three years. In 2007, he founded Taimani Films, a producton company aimed at supportng development organizatons in their communicaton eforts and promotng free and independent expression as a foundaton of democracy.
Among other flms, Louis directed 2 socially-aware and award-winning documentaries:
- Prisoners of the Himalayas: the life and fate of the last Kirghiz nomads of Afghanistan, the most isolated high-alttude community of the planet.
- Afghans to the top: the frst Afghan expediton to the top of Mount Noshaq, the highest peak in Afghanistan, culminatng at 7,492 meters.
Louis is now dedicating all of his time and energy to Kabuliwood, with the objective of revealing a young, dynamic and hopeful side of Afghanistan.
