The first all Ka-band HighThroughput Satellite (HTS) inEurope, KA-SAT, has been deve-loped to provide cost-effectivebroadband access and IP services.Launched end-2010 and positio-ned at 9° East, KA-SAT is an integral part of a network of tenground stations interconnectedby an IP MPLS fibre networklinked to four major EuropeanPOPs. KA-SAT provides coveragethrough 82 spotbeams usingfour different frequencies forefficient frequency re-use. Thisprocess multiplies the availablecapacity by a factor of 20, to attainthe unprecedented amount ofbroadband capacity of 90 Gbps.
