We all have troubles. But every so often we cometo a crisis—I mean an industrial-strength crisisand we really don't know where to turn unless weturn to the Lord. Peter encountered such a crisis, which is recorded in Acts 12. Let me first give youthe background.

Herod was a wicked ruler who torturedChristians. He put James to death, the brother ofJohn. And when Herod saw that this pleased themultitude, he sought to stage another publicspectacle of a Christian put to death. So, heimprisoned Peter.

After Passover, Herod planned to present Peterbefore the crowds and then kill him, as well. If youwere Peter, would you categorize this life event asa crisis? Indeed! And so, this is the type of crisis Iwant to address in this booklet—a crisis ofextreme proportions.

Here is the crisis and its glorious outcome, asrecorded Acts 12:1-11:

Now about that time Herod the kingstretched forth his hands to vex certain ofthe church. And he killed James the brother

of John with the sword. And because he sawit pleased the Jews, he proceeded further totake Peter also. (Then were the days ofunleavened bread.) And when he hadapprehended him, he put him in prison, anddelivered him to four quaternions ofsoldiers to keep him; intending after[Passover] to bring him forth to the people.Peter therefore was kept in prison: butprayer was made without ceasing of thechurch unto God for him. And when Herodwould have brought him forth, the samenight Peter was sleeping between twosoldiers, bound with two chains: and thekeepers before the door kept the prison. And, behold, the angel of the Lord cameupon him, and a light shined in the prison:and he smote Peter on the side, and raisedhim up, saying, Arise up quickly. And hischains fell off from his hands. And the angelsaid unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thysandals. And so he did. And he saith untohim, Cast thy garment about thee, andfollow me. And he went out, and followedhim; and wist not that it was true which wasdone by the angel; but thought he saw avision. When they were past the first and thesecond ward, they came unto the iron gatethat leadeth unto the city; which opened tothem of his own accord: and they went out,and passed on through one street; andforthwith the angel departed from him.

Now, how would you have handled this crisis ofbeing unjustly thrown in jail and awaiting deathat the hands of a merciless king? Well, here arefour reflections on this passage that I pray willhelp you handle the next crisis in your life.

RESPECT THE MYSTERY

OF GOD'S PROVIDENCE

As you read Acts 12, there is one word that comesthrough providence which is the hidden hand ofGod. God is continually working in a mysterious, inexplicable way in our lives. God is in theshadows arranging things that we cannot see.

You may be in the middle of chaos right now, where nothing seems to be making sense.Everything you thought you had nailed down iscoming loose and the devil is pulling the nails.

Now listen to me, just because it doesn't makesense to you doesn't mean that it does not makesense.

For instance, as we read Acts 12 we might think,Why did God let a rascal like Herod be king? Isn'tGod in charge? If I were God, I'd turn him into afrog. Why should James be killed and Peterreleased? Does God have favorites? Is Godcapricious or has God lost control?

Now friend, I want to tell you something. We donot live by explanations. Life is not a problem tobe solved; it is a mystery to be lived. We have toback off sometimes and just simply respect thehidden hand of God. God says,

For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith theLORD. For as the heavens are higher than the

6

earth, so are My ways higher than yourways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.(Isaiah 55:8-9)

Have you ever watched an artist paint apicture? There is a man I have watched ontelevision. In one hour, he can paint a beautifulpainting. Maybe you have seen him. He splashescolors on the canvas—mixing this color and that.He says, "I think a little more yellow here. Andmaybe some blue over there." I look and think,Oh, that looks incredible. How does he do that?

Then all of a sudden this artist reaches downwith his brush and swishes around some colorsand he'll say, "Swoosh!" And I'll think, Oh no! Youruined it! Mister, you really messed up. Let's seehow you're going to get out of this.

He has painted a splashy thing across what Ithought was a perfect painting. But what did Iknow? He wasn't finished yet. I patiently watcheduntil the end and indeed he turned what Ithought was a big mistake, into a masterpiece.

Now, it didn't make sense to me when Iwatched that artist paint, but it made sense tohim. And just because things are not makingsense to you, do not think that they don't makesense. And just because you cannot see Godworking doesn't mean God is not working.

Sometimes we watch what God does as Hepaints His colors on the canvas of our lives, and wesay, "Lord, You're really doing good." Thensomething happens that we didn't plan (or want)and we think God has really made a mistake. Haveyou ever thought, God, how did You let thishappen?

In Acts 12, we see Herod's ungodly power, theunfair death of James, and then all of a sudden—Peter is released! All of these things worked

Page 8: K145 - Adrian Rogers · were Peter, would you categorize this life event as a crisis? Indeed! And so, this is the type of crisis I want to address in this booklet—a crisis of extreme

7

together to showcase the sovereignty andprovidence of God. Romans 8:28 says, "And weknow that all things work together for good tothem that love God, to them who are the calledaccording to His purpose."

Most of us have the idea that life is all good andthen life gets bad, then it gets good again.Generally it's not that way. Life is not forty milesof good road, then ten miles of bad road, thensixty miles of good road.

Instead, life is more like a railroad track—onerail good and one rail bad. The good and the badrun parallel. Many of us don't understand thatand we get frustrated in the present moment aswe wait for the time when no more bad things willhappen. We say things like: "I'll be so glad whenall of this is over so I can do what I want to do."

If you're in school, you'll be glad when school isover, and then you can start doing what you wantto do. If you're a parent and your children arelittle, you'll be glad when the children are grownso you can do what you want to do. When you'resick, you'll be glad when you get well so you canbegin to serve God as you want.

Let me illustrate it this way. There is a girl whowants to marry a boy and her parents say, "Don'tmarry him. Sweetheart, the boy doesn't have thecharacter to make a good husband." But she saysshe loves him and she's going to marry him. Theparents try to make the best they can out of thesituation, since they want to love theirprospective son-in-law.

The couple gets married and a little babycomes along. After a while the husband turns outto be a philanderer—just what the parents feared—and he leaves his wife. Now, in this situation Iwould ask the girl's parents, "If you could, wouldyou turn the clock back? Be careful how you

Page 9: K145 - Adrian Rogers · were Peter, would you categorize this life event as a crisis? Indeed! And so, this is the type of crisis I want to address in this booklet—a crisis of extreme

8

answer, because if you say yes, you're going tohave to give up that grandbaby, that you've cometo love so much."

Isn't life mysterious? God, in His wisdom, mixes these things together for His glory and allthings work together for good. We cannot live byexplanations, because we will never ever explainGod. Instead, we live by promises.

Have you ever wondered why God put thevitamins in spinach and not in ice cream? Or whythe sun is yellow instead of green? Let God be Godand respect the mystery of His providence. Ifyou're in a crisis, don't demand to understand.Trust instead that God knows what He is doingand He knows what is best for you and everyoneinvolved. Proverbs 3:5-6 says,

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; andlean not unto thine own understanding. Inall thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shalldirect thy paths.

Let me encourage you to dig deeper intodiscovering the wonderful, hidden hand of Godand His providence by reading the followingpassages: Deuteronomy 8:18; 1 Chronicles 29:14;Psalm 23; 34:7-10; 68:6; 107; 136; Proverbs 16:33;Isaiah 45:9; 46:4; 55:10; Ezekiel 36:28-38; Amos4:7-12; Luke 10:21; Acts 3:17-18; Romans 9:20-21;James 4:14.

REQUEST THE MINISTRY

OF GOD'S PEOPLE

Acts 12:6b says, "Peter was sleeping between twosoldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepersbefore the door kept the prison." Peter was undermaximum security and had a death sentence.

Friend, that crisis shut every door, but one. That was the door no human could shut. It wasthe door of prayer. When there is no hope on thehorizontal level, there's always hope on thevertical level. When God's people are shut up inevery way, there is still the ministry of prayer.

THE FREQUENCY OF PRAYER

Acts 12:5 says, "Peter therefore was kept inprison: but prayer was made without ceasing ofthe church unto God for him." The church waspraying around the clock for what seemed to be ahopeless situation for Peter! I even wonder if theyquestioned whether God was going to answertheir prayers.

I think God was trying to teach them (and us) alesson about prayer—we are to persist in prayer.Luke 18:1 says, "And He [Jesus] spake a parableunto them to this end, that men ought always topray, and not to faint."

Page 11: K145 - Adrian Rogers · were Peter, would you categorize this life event as a crisis? Indeed! And so, this is the type of crisis I want to address in this booklet—a crisis of extreme

10

After Jesus taught us to pray, He gave a parableabout frequent prayer:

And He said unto them, Which of you shallhave a friend, and shall go unto him atmidnight, and say unto him, Friend, lendme three loaves; For a friend of mine in hisjourney is come to me, and I have nothing toset before him? And he from within shallanswer and say, Trouble me not: the door isnow shut, and my children are with me inbed; I cannot rise and give thee. I say untoyou, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of hisimportunity he will rise and give him asmany as he needeth. (Luke 11:5-8)

This man didn't give up after just one try. Hekeeps on trying. Jesus explained about this kind ofpraying, when He said:

And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be givenyou; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and itshall be opened unto you. For every one thatasketh receiveth; and he that seekethfindeth; and to him that knocketh it shall beopened. (Luke 11:9-10)

Literally this means that we are to keep onasking, seeking, and knocking. We need to learnthat God's delays are not denials. FirstThessalonians 5:17 says, "Pray without ceasing."

THE FERVENCY OF PRAYER

Acts 12:5 tells us the church prayed "withoutceasing." This may be translated "intensely."

Page 12: K145 - Adrian Rogers · were Peter, would you categorize this life event as a crisis? Indeed! And so, this is the type of crisis I want to address in this booklet—a crisis of extreme

11

Today, I think the reason we don't pray withintensity like the early church is because we thinkwe can do everything without prayer. Perhaps theworst thing about us is not our prayerlessness butour pride.

We have our programs, plans, methods, pastors, choirs, Bible fellowship classes, andbuildings. We have this and that, so we think weknow how to do it all. We don't need God's help. And you know what the devil does?

The devil stands in the corner, smirks and says,"You can have your buildings, choirs, fellowships, and preacher. You can have all that stuff. You caneven have your Bible studies, as long as you leaveout the fervent prayer filled with the power of God that will not take no for an answer. The devil mocks at our schemes, laughs at ourorganizations, ridicules our talents, but he fearsour prayers.

What about your prayer life? Do you only prayintensely in the midst of the crisis? Or do you prayintensely every time you pray? I love what Godsaid as recorded in Jeremiah 29:13, "And ye shallseek Me, and find Me, when ye shall search for Mewith all your heart" (emphasis mine).

I am trying to cure myself of casual prayer—those prayers that cost little. I want the kind ofprayer that the Bible calls prayer wrestling. Paulasked for this kind of prayer on his behalf:

Now I beseech you, brethren, for the LordJesus Christ's sake, and for the love of theSpirit, that ye strive together with me in yourprayers to God for me. (Romans 15:30,emphasis mine)

Have you ever thought of prayer as wrestling?Does prayer come easily to you, or do you

Page 13: K145 - Adrian Rogers · were Peter, would you categorize this life event as a crisis? Indeed! And so, this is the type of crisis I want to address in this booklet—a crisis of extreme

12

genuinely agonize in prayer as you intercede forothers? If you really get into intercession, you'regoing to discover that the devil will oppose you.Prayer is work. I'd rather preach for an hour thanto pray for a half an hour, so far as the labor that ittakes for genuine prayer.

Sometimes we don't feel like praying. Friend, ifthere was ever a time that you needed to pray, it'swhen you don't feel like it. We need to pray untilwe feel like it.

THE FELLOWSHIP OF PRAYER

Acts 12:5 says, "Peter therefore was kept inprison: but prayer was made without ceasing ofthe church unto God for him" (emphasis mine).God is pleased when His children pray, but God ismore pleased when His children pray infellowship. If you've ever had a prayer partner, you know how your hearts become linkedtogether. Jesus said,

Again I say unto you, That if two of you shallagree on earth as touching any thing thatthey shall ask, it shall be done for them ofMy Father which is in heaven. For where twoor three are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst of them. (Matthew18:19-20)

If the early church gathered in prayer like this, then our churches need to be gathering in prayerlike this for our Christian brothers and sisters whoare being persecuted for their faith today. Maybeyou can start an intercessory prayer ministry inyour church. Find names of Christians who are

Page 14: K145 - Adrian Rogers · were Peter, would you categorize this life event as a crisis? Indeed! And so, this is the type of crisis I want to address in this booklet—a crisis of extreme

13

being persecuted, put together a list, then askyour church to join together to pray for them.

There's nothing that will bind the churchtogether more than praying. There are timeswhen the church prays that God comes in aglorious and wonderful way.

Your Sunday School class needs to be anenclave of prayer. Your deacon group needs topray. Your fellowship groups ought to open andclose with prayer. And I don't mean just say,"Lord, bless us," I mean, pray! Everything we doought to be saturated with prayer. Your churchand mine ought to run on the engine of prayer.

THE FAITH OF PRAYER

The church prayed "unto God." They were notpraying a memorized, repetitive prayer. Theyweren't praying to impress one another like somany today.

I heard about a young lawyer who was sitting inhis new office. He didn't have any clients or evena secretary, but he had his shingle hanging outfront. He heard footsteps in the hallway andthought his first client was coming.

He picked up the phone to look like he wasbusy and said, "Hello. Yes this is he. No, I'm sorryI can't meet with you today, perhaps nextThursday. I have a heavy corporate case going totrial next week. That sounds fine. We'll talk then."

As the visitor entered the office, he hung up thephone and said, "Yes sir, what may I do for you?"The visitor responded, "Well, I'm from thetelephone company and I'm here to hook up yourtelephone."

Many times our prayers are simply to impresssomebody else but there's no one on the line.

Page 15: K145 - Adrian Rogers · were Peter, would you categorize this life event as a crisis? Indeed! And so, this is the type of crisis I want to address in this booklet—a crisis of extreme

14

These devoted brothers and sisters weren't tryingto impress anybody. They didn't have a petition tobring to the government to get Peter released. They didn't have money to bribe Herod to get himout of prison. They didn't have political influence, but they had the faith of prayer.

The world may laugh, but friend, the devildoesn't laugh. Someone has wisely said the deviltrembles when he sees the weakest saint uponhis knees.

THE FOCUS OF PRAYER

Again, Acts 12:5 says, "Peter therefore was keptin prison: but prayer was made without ceasingof the church unto God for him" (emphasismine). The church was praying for Peter. It was aprayer, not only with intensity, but also withspecificity.

What did you pray for this morning? Tragically, many of our prayers are so vague. If God were toanswer them we wouldn't even know it. Westumble out of bed and mumble, "Lord, save thelost this morning." Well, if somebody gets saved, you can say, "Well, I prayed for somebody to besaved and a lost person got saved."

How do you know that was your prayer? Howdo you know that wasn't my prayer or somebodyelse's prayer? At least when these believers werepraying for Peter and the answer came, they knewit was an answer to prayer. It was made for him.

Here in the South, it's not uncommon to hearpeople say, "Y'all come see us sometime." Theydon't mean that. But, I might take them seriouslyif they said, "Hey, man, I've got some of the fineststeaks you've ever seen in the freezer. Could y'all

15

come by next Saturday at five and we'll have acookout?" Now, that's specificity.

What are you asking of God? If God were toanswer your prayer, would you even know it?Prayer needs to be focused. It was for Peter andGod answered.

Page 17: K145 - Adrian Rogers · were Peter, would you categorize this life event as a crisis? Indeed! And so, this is the type of crisis I want to address in this booklet—a crisis of extreme

16

REST IN THE MASTERY

OF GOD'S PEACE

Acts 12:6 says, "And when Herod would havebrought him forth, the same night Peter wassleeping between two soldiers, bound with twochains: and the keepers before the door kept theprison" (emphasis mine).

I don't know whether the guards were asleep, but Peter was sleeping! The next morning he was tobe executed and he was able to sleep. And he wassleeping so soundly that the angel had to punchhim in the ribs to wake him up! Acts 12:7 says,

And, behold, the angel of the Lord cameupon him, and a light shined in the prison:and he smote Peter on the side, and raisedhim up, saying, Arise up quickly. And hischains fell off from his hands. (emphasismine)

As I read this, I thought, How could Peter sleepin such a crisis? And God taught me three things:

PETERWAS NO LONGERAFRAID OF DEATH

Peter wasn't afraid of death because he hadseen the risen Christ. I've said it before and it

Page 18: K145 - Adrian Rogers · were Peter, would you categorize this life event as a crisis? Indeed! And so, this is the type of crisis I want to address in this booklet—a crisis of extreme

17

bears repeating here: a man is not ready to liveuntil he is no longer afraid to die. Death holds noreal terrors for a man who has had a savingencounter with Jesus Christ.

If a man who is facing death because of his faithcan see through that empty grave to being onewith the Lord Jesus Christ, then that can give himpeace to stand through any trial. The Lord Jesuscame to deliver us from the bondage of the fear ofdeath (see Hebrews 2:15).

The Apostle Paul, who overcame this fear andrested in God's peace, said:

For I am now ready to be offered, and thetime of my departure is at hand. I have foughta good fight, I have finished my course, I havekept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up forme a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day:and not to me only, but unto all them alsothat love his appearing. (2 Timothy 4:6-8)

There is a story about some soldiers who wereon a voyage to conquer the world. They came to alittle island off the coast of Britain and docked.

The people on the island saw what washappening and began to make plans to defendtheir island. Though they were not a war faringpeople, they gathered sticks, pitchforks, rakes, rocks—anything they could find—and theystarted down the hill to meet these soldiers.

They were ready for a fight to the death. Butwhat happened next was nothing they could haveplanned. On their way to the shore, they witnessedthe soldiers setting fire to their boat and shoving itout back into the ocean to burn and sink.

This was a clear sign to the villagers to surrender.Do you know why? They realized that this army

Page 19: K145 - Adrian Rogers · were Peter, would you categorize this life event as a crisis? Indeed! And so, this is the type of crisis I want to address in this booklet—a crisis of extreme

had not come to retreat, they had come to conqueror die. They had overcome the fear of death.

PETER KNEW THAT GOD'S PEOPLEWERE PRAYING FOR HIM

Knowing someone is praying for me helps mein my ministry. What peace, strength, joy, andvictory I sense when I know God's people arepraying for me. Sometimes I feel like I'm justflying with a tailwind, and I know that it isbecause of the prayers of God's people.

Peter knew those folks were bombardingheaven for him and that's the reason he wasasleep. He was also aware of God's presencebecause he knew that the Bible says, "He thatkeepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep"(Psalm 121:3).

I heard about a man who was in a crisis and hethought about this verse of scripture. He said,"Well, Lord, there's no need for both of us to stayup all night. Good night. I'm going to sleep whileYou stay awake."

Isaiah 26:3-4 says,

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whosemind is stayed on Thee: because he trustethin Thee. Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for inthe LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength.

Are you praying for others, not only for theirdeliverance from affliction and persecution, butalso to have God's peace in the midst of the crisis?Paul challenged us to be "praying always with allprayer and supplication in the Spirit, andwatching thereunto with all perseverance andsupplication for all saints" (Ephesians 6:18).

18

Page 20: K145 - Adrian Rogers · were Peter, would you categorize this life event as a crisis? Indeed! And so, this is the type of crisis I want to address in this booklet—a crisis of extreme

Are you in the midst of a crisis? Turn yourproblem over to God—just roll it on the Lord. Idon't care how big it is. God has peace to give youin exchange. Paul said:

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing byprayer and supplication with thanksgivinglet your requests be made known unto God.And the peace of God, which passeth allunderstanding, shall keep your hearts andminds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7, emphasis mine)

The soldiers thought they were guarding Peter inprison. No. God's peace was guarding him. God'speace had garrisoned Peter about on every side.

19

Page 21: K145 - Adrian Rogers · were Peter, would you categorize this life event as a crisis? Indeed! And so, this is the type of crisis I want to address in this booklet—a crisis of extreme

REJOICE IN THE MAJESTY

OF GOD'S POWER

Did God lose the reins of His control when Jameswas killed? No. Did God relinquish His thronewhen Peter was put in prison? No. God has neverleft His throne.

And, behold, the angel of the Lord cameupon him [Peter], and a light shined in theprison: and he smote Peter on the side, andraised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. Andhis chains fell off from his hands. And theangel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bindon thy sandals. And so he did. And he saithunto him, Cast thy garment about thee, andfollow me. And he went out, and followedhim; and wist not that it was true which wasdone by the angel; but thought he saw avision. When they were past the first and thesecond ward, they came unto the iron gatethat leadeth unto the city; which opened tothem of his own accord: and they went out,and passed on through one street; andforthwith the angel departed from him.(Acts 12:7-10)

I remember the first time I saw an automaticdoor. My brother and I went downtown andwalked up to a door and it opened. We walked

20

Page 22: K145 - Adrian Rogers · were Peter, would you categorize this life event as a crisis? Indeed! And so, this is the type of crisis I want to address in this booklet—a crisis of extreme

back outside, walked up to that door and itopened again. It seemed the most amazing thingI had ever seen.

Well, guess what? Automatic doors aren'tanything new! Acts 12:10 tells us that an iron gate"opened to them of his own accord" and Peterwalks on out. What an incredible story of God'spower.

But now I want you to notice that after Peter leftthe jail, verse 10 tells us, "and forthwith the angeldeparted from him." The angel took him only sofar and then said, "Peter, I want you to see howGod's power is working here."

You might be thinking that God is weak andcannot do anything. Or that God is unconcernedand does not care. You may even say, "Where isGod? Is He able? Doesn't God care?"

I believe it is important to this account thatPeter's deliverance came at the last moment. Godseems to be very leisurely resolving the crisis forPeter. As a matter of fact, this entire story ismarked by leisure.

The angel came in, poked Peter in the ribs, andsaid, "Hey Peter. Wake up." Caught in the middleof a sound sleep, no doubt Peter was a littlegroggy and perhaps wondered what time it was.The angel urged him on, "Come on, son, and getup." Maybe Peter responded, "What time is it?"And the angel said, "Never mind what time it is,we're making a jailbreak. Now, put on yoursandals and coat." If you're making a jailbreak, doyou get dressed as you're going out?

Then, there is no sense of racing to a corner, sneaking around a wall, then racing to anothercorner and tip-toeing past another armed guard. They simply walked out. Every soldier was eitherasleep or in a trance. Every locked gate opened. And then the angel left him. It seemed to be just a

Here is what happened next in Acts 12:

And when Peter was come to himself, hesaid, Now I know of a surety, that the Lordhath sent His angel, and hath delivered meout of the hand of Herod, and from all theexpectation of the people of the Jews. Andwhen he had considered the thing, he cameto the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where manywere gathered together praying. And asPeter knocked at the door of the gate, adamsel came to hearken, named Rhoda. And when she knew Peter's voice, sheopened not the gate for gladness, but ran in,and told how Peter stood before the gate. And they said unto her, Thou art mad. Butshe constantly affirmed that it was even so.Then said they, It is his angel. But Petercontinued knocking: and when they hadopened the door, and saw him, they wereastonished. But he, beckoning unto themwith the hand to hold their peace, declaredunto them how the Lord had brought himout of the prison. And he said, Go showthese things unto James, and to thebrethren. And he departed, and went intoanother place. Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter. And when Herodhad sought for him, and found him not, heexamined the keepers, and commandedthat they should be put to death. And hewent down from Judaea to Caesarea, andthere abode.

I think it is amazing that it was easier for Peterto get out of prison than it was to get in thatprayer meeting. If the Lord could open a prisongate, don't you think He could cause the gate toMary's home to open? Here is a lesson on prayer:Prayer is never an excuse for laziness. We are tocontinually seek the Lord for what He would haveus to do, then do it.

We are to pray to God for daily bread, but weare also to go out and get the bread. The Biblesays, "that if any would not work, neither shouldhe eat" (2 Thessalonians 3:10b). Don't you lovethe balance of the Word of God? There was no waythat Peter could open that prison gate, but therewas a way that Peter could open the gate toMary's home.

Maybe we cannot change water into wine, butwe can fill earthen pots. Maybe we cannot raiseLazarus from the dead, but we can take his graveclothes off.

Now, in the last part of Acts 12, we read:

And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royalapparel, sat upon his throne, and made anoration unto them. And the people gave ashout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and notof a man. And immediately the angel of theLord smote him, because he gave not Godthe glory: and he was eaten of worms, andgave up the ghost.

Herod is stricken dead because of his arroganceand pride and is eaten by worms. It is a gruesomething, but you see the hidden hand of God in all ofit, because in the very next verse you read, "But theword of God grew and multiplied" (Acts 12:24).

REMEMBER THESE THINGS

If you are in a situation and God doesn't deliveryou, remember He didn't deliver James and it is notbecause He cannot. If God is working in a way thatyou cannot see, it does not mean that God is notworking. If it looks like evil is succeeding, justremember that the success of evil is only temporary.

Woodrow Wilson once said, "I had rathertemporarily fail with a cause that must ultimatelysucceed than to temporarily succeed with a causethat must ultimately fail."

Here are four things to remember:

1. Don't demand to understand. You will never figure it out.

2. Remember the resource of prayer.3. Put your eyes upon God and rest in His love.4. Expect God's power to move in His own

time and in His own way.

He is the Christ of every crisis.

A CLOSING PLEA

My friend, have you given your life to the Lord?Do you have the assurance that if you were to dieright now, you would go straight to heaven? If not, please let me tell you how you can be saved.

ADMIT YOUR SIN

First, you must understand that you are asinner. The Bible says, “All have sinned, and comeshort of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

ABANDON SELF-EFFORT

Second, you must understand that you cannotsave yourself by your efforts. The Bible is veryclear that it’s “not by works of righteousnesswhich we have done, but according to His mercyHe saved us, by the washing of regeneration, andrenewing of the Holy Ghost” (Titus 3:5).

Again, “For by grace are ye saved through faith;and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:Not of works, lest any man should boast”(Ephesians 2:8-9).

ACKNOWLEDGE CHRIST’S PAYMENT

Third, you must believe that Jesus Christ, theSon of God, died for your sins. The Bible says,

25

Page 27: K145 - Adrian Rogers · were Peter, would you categorize this life event as a crisis? Indeed! And so, this is the type of crisis I want to address in this booklet—a crisis of extreme

“But God commendeth His love toward us, inthat, while we were yet sinners, Christ died forus” (Romans 5:8).

That means He died in your place. Your sin debthas been paid by the blood of Jesus Christ, which“cleanseth us from all sin” (1 John 1:7b).

ACCEPT HIM AS SAVIOR

Fourth, you must put your faith in Jesus Christand Him alone for your salvation. The blood ofChrist does you no good until you receive Him byfaith. The Bible says, “Believe on the Lord JesusChrist, and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31).

Have you ever taken this all-important step offaith? If not, I urge you to do it right now. Why?Because Jesus is the only way to heaven!

And speaking of Jesus, the Apostle Peter said inActs 4:12, “Neither is there salvation in any other:for there is none other name under heaven givenamong men, whereby we must be saved.”

Jesus Himself said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, butby Me” (John 14:6). It couldn’t be any clearer thanthat.

Are you willing to offer the following prayer toGod today?

O God, I’m a sinner, I’m lost, and I need to besaved. I know I can’t save myself, so right now, once and for all, I trust You to save me. Comeinto my heart, forgive my sin, and make meYour child. I give You my life. I will live for Youas You give me strength.

If you will make this your heartfelt prayer, Godwill hear and save you! Jesus has promised thatHe will not turn away anyone who comes to Himin faith (see John 6:37). He will make you a child ofGod if you will turn to Him (see John 1:12).
