GKplus2 K103 LND7317 Geiger Counterby Atomic.dave [email protected]
This is yet another one of a kind, custom hand-made Geiger Counter built by Atomic.Dave. This is the GKplus2-a replacement to the popular full featured Cadillac Meter. It is based on a kit designed by John Giametti (username:Brohogan) I have been building his DIY Geiger counters for over two years having built and sold about 100 of them.Much of the information for this kit is available at the developers website. This is more of a kit for someone who knowsa little bit about electronics but doesnt have the time or patience to build it, or would rather someone else do all thedirty work. Having been built by me, of course there may be some imperfections, although as minimal as possible. This particular unit not only has a wireless remote control for in field programming, it also has the very sensitive pan-cake American tube, the LND7317. Also provided on the CD is the developers User guide and assembly instructionsfor further information on this unit and its operations and functions as well as otgher troubleshooting.
OPERATIONThree Triple Pole switches- ALL OFF IN CENTER POSITION. With 2 green momentary switches in between.
POWER SELECT ALARM NULL SOUNDUP ON IN ON IN CLICK
MIDDLE OFF OUT OFF OUT OFFDOWN CHARGE LED ONLY TONE
A. POWER controls the power and charging of the unit. Up turns on the unit with internal battery power, Mid-dle turns if off, and Down is for charging the unit. When the unit is charging, the tiny RED LED on the lowerright side below the USB port and switch will remain constant RED while charging, and when charging iscomplete, it will turn BLUE. If you wish to power the unit with the USB in, and bypass the batteries for ex-tended periods. Switch POWER to middle position, and flip up switch on lower right of unit next to the miniUSB port. This will keep the batteries unused while you power with any 5v source.B. SELECT - momentary switch does 2 things. When you first power on the unit, you will see:
GK-plus LND7317 v1.15This customized first welcome window can easily be changed if you want, by doing a little programming
in Arduino. Refer to the DIY site for directions at the SOFTWARE section. But by default it now says GK6-plus, and the second line says the tube name and the software version. (LND7317 and v1.10)
The First window will show the info below. The first line is the current uSv to CPM conversion rate. For aLND7317 pancake tube, the conversion rate is 345.
uSv/h=345CPMVcc=5.05VAlarm=200CPMGKLOG007.CSV
Set Alarm?
02/16/14 01:30pmI have preset this for your Tube, but later if you wanted to you could change this rate with either Arduino,
or with the Sony wireless remote control which I will explain later. The second line refers to the current volt-age that your system is running at. This is a 5 volt system. The 4000mAh 3.7v lipo battery is boosted to 5vwith a pololu booster. Everytime you start up your GC (geiger counter) it will show you this so you will alwaysknow your current voltage.
Then the Current Alarm amount that is set is shown, and the blue boxed area says Set Alarm? at thatpoint you can push the Select button to incrementally change the Alarm threshold number. Once you stopholding the button and wait, it will be set to the current number shown on the screen and will stay there untilyou change it either again restarting and waiting for this part, or by using the included remote control tochange it. You can also choose from units of measurement such as CPM or uSv/h for the Alarm with the re-mote. It also acts like a stopwatch starter for the scaler mode. It has two preset times of 1 minute and 10minute averaging. You can change the second one only with the remote, or the sketch when connected to pc.The first one (1 minute) is default and unchangeble. You can always change this later at any time without acomputer and with the remote. At the bottom of the window is todayss date and time. The system now hasan internal clock with backup battery.
Finally this select button can also be used as a mute switch when an alarm point is reached, and thepiezo is blaring, just hit this select button once and it will mute the alarm.C. ALARM controls the Alarm LED and Piezo. Up for both on, Middle for both off, and Down for LED only on.This makes for a silent visual alarm.D. NULL momentary switch and works only when in Tone mode for the event speaker. When you are scanningin Tone mode, you can push this to reset the sensing to zero as you approach a sample.E. SOUND switch controls the Event speaker. Up for Standard Click mode, Middle for mute, Down for ToneMode. More information on Tone Mode can be found on the User guide pdf on the cd.
Two BLACK Tactileswitches are described inthese two grey boxes.

LEDSRight away, you will hear the clicking of the speaker as your GM tube picks up radiation events. There are twoLEDs below the LCD. The Left is GREEN which is for radiation events and coincides with the clicking speakerwhich can be muted with the sound switch in middle position. The Right one is RED for the Alarm which willonly light up when a set alarm threshold is reached. It can be turned on or off with the Alarm switch in middleposition. Once again when there is an alarm threshold reached, you can alway hit the select button to mutethe piezo and shut off the RED LED if you dont want to move the sound switch to middle position.
OTHER SWITCHES, BUTTONS, PORTS, DIALS 1. GPS POWER SWITCH - used to help reduce battery life. When using this switch, I recommend turning offthe unit first. This is located at the very top left of the unit.2. USB POWER SWITCH - This is used for controlling the use of the USB 5v power that is coming thru thisport when plugged into a 5v source such as a wall charger, solar panel, cigarette adapter, laptop, or com-puter. When up, and the power switch in the middle, this will power the unit and bypass the batteries. Whendown, and power switch is down, this will charge the units internal 4000mAh 3.7v lithium ion battery. Just tothe left of the USB port is the charging LED indicator. RED for charging, and BLUE when charging is com-plete. Protective overcharge circuitry is built into the included Lithium Ion rechargeable battery.3. USB MINI INPUT PORT - (IN port on right side of unit) used to connect to pc of mac for sketch editing viaarduino programming. It can also be used for radiation data logging, using Radiation Logger:http://www.rhelectronics.net/store/radiation-logger.html 4. MULTIPORT- (OUT port on the left side of unit) used for Geiger Bot (with the included G-Bot cable). Justplug in the Geiger Bot cable into this with the 3 conductor plug, and the 4 conductor into your iphone or ipad.It also serves as an audio output for silent listening with headphones, or with the a 3 conductor to 3 conduc-tor M-M audio cable, you can run sound based data logging software.
SD CARD WRITER - This meter is equipped with an internal SD card writer (FREEblank is inclluded) Always turn OFF the unit while removing or inserting the SD card. The default auto write of all info to the card is set to 1 minute, but you can change thateasily with the remote control. When inserting the SD card, place the meter back downon a table, make sure the metal tabs onthe card are up, and are going into theslot of the meter. Do NOT force it andgently nudge it in making sure you aresliding it in in a horizontal motion. It willstop when the card is about .25 com-ing out of the slot as shown in the pic-ture left. The file that is written to thecard is saved as a .csv file which is Mi-crosoft Excel compatible.INSTALOG BUTTON - The button atthe top of the meter just below the SDcard. Push this and all info currently
happening will be written to the SD card. Otherwise, the SDcard writer has a set time you can adjust to record at intervals- info such as Time, Date, Speed, altitude,GPS coordinates, CPM, uSv/hr.
As shown in the diagram to the right, the file is broken out into columns: Date, Time, Lat, Lon, Alt(m),Vel(km/h), CPM, uSv/h, Vcc. By copying a column(s) of data, you can make anytype of bargraph or piechartthat excel is capable of creating. (note: when removing or replacing the silicone boot, remember to remove the SD card first, and alsobe sure to avoid rubbing the INSTALOG button with boot or damage will occur to the switch, andwill need replacing.)
NEW 1.8 Serial Display 128x160 SPI TFT LCD module w/ SDsocketSoftware features A graph on the main screen shows last 13 minutes of activity and

BACKGROUND CPM - the average background rate you enter is used if the DOSE UNIT is set to xBg. TIME SETTINGS set time and date if not using a GPS also Auto DST and various time date, formats and metric or imperial units GPS MODULE choice of one of the four supported GPS module types (EM-406a/411, U-blox 6, Adafruit MTK3339, SkyTraq ST22) DISP PERIOD, SD CARD LOG PERIOD, SERIAL LOG PERIOD, SCALER PERIOD settable CPM->(unit), ALARM THRESHOLD, BARGRAPH MAX CPM, TONE SENSITIVITY - settable
GPS MODULEThis unit is equipped with an internal (Ublox NEO-6M) With its separate power switch flipped up/on, it will automatically boot up when you
power up your meter. When you see the Velocity and Altitude on the lower left side of the display, you are synced.
ABOUT DOSE UNITS:The menu allows you select the name of the dose unit that appears on the display. However, to be clear, there is no built in conversion be-
tween them. Instead the CPM->[DOSE] RATIO is adjusted depending on the name of the DOSE UNIT selected. For example, 175.43 is the de-fault set for the SBM-20 with uSv as the dose unit. Suppose you pick "mR" as the dose unit name, and want to measure in milirems. ("mR" morecorrectly abbreviates as milliroentgens but is used to save display space.) The rem is defined as .01 seivert. Therefore, to use the same ratio thatwas designed for the tube, you would multiply that ratio by 10. You would enter a CPM->[DOSE] RATIO as 175.43 x 10 or 1754.3. Likewise if youwanted microrems ("uR") you would divide the ratio by 10 and enter 17.54.
If you do want to use roentgens (used in older instruments) this source states that they are .96 rem in soft tissue. So the CPM->[DOSE]RATIO for actual mR would be 175.43 x 10 x .96 or 1684.1. (for uR it would be 16.84)
PLEASE REFER TO THE DIY GEIGER COUNTER DEVELOPERS WEBSITE FOR FURTHER INFORMATION:http://www.sites.google.com/site/diygeigercounter/ARDUINO Software and Serial-USB connection information:ON the cd you will find the FTDI driver and Arduino program version 1. Install both and restart your mac. Copy the Geiger Sketch folder to thesame folder as your Arduino program is and remember where that is as that will be where you go to save your sketch everytime you make achange to it. There will also be a Library folder that will also need to be in the same folder. Just remember that the folder has to be the same exactname as the sketch name is. And also within Arduino, you will have to go to preferences and show Arduino where your default sketch folder is.
ARDUINO SETTINGS: Brohogan Software 1. Open Arduino2. Open the saved sketch .ino file, connect your Geiger counter to the USB with power switch off.3. Verify the file by clicking the little check mark icon.4. Click TOOLS, and Select Board type as Arduino UNO, and select serial port as the top tty choice.5. Click Serial Monitor (top right looking glass icon). Set Baud rate to 9600 and you should see the CPM, uSv and geiger counter voltage datacoming up once per minute.
