It is hard to believe that KOI is fast approaching its sixteenth World Cup and that many who attended the fi rst one in Scotland in 1992 are still with us year after year. I am so fortunate to have built an organisation where all the members like and trust each other so much, because without all of you and your support we could not be as we are. I am looking forward so much to July in Varna and meeting you all again for what has truly become a unique event in the world of karate.

Already this year we have been joined by new members from Germany, Switzerland, South Africa and Saudi Arabia and the success of the KOI regional events goes from strength to strength; Italy, Norway, Russia, UK, and next year, in the Netherlands.

Joining our team of top international instructors this year will be Patrick Lim 7th Dan from Malaysia who will teach Shitoryu kata and Raphael Acktchourine from Russia who will assist our sport kumite instructors.

We expect shortly to conclude an agreement with a major martial arts supplier who will be able to supply all our members worldwide with the new KOI brand of karate equipment which will be available for inspection in Varna.

Also in Varna will be the fi rst offi cial KOI video fi lmed by a professional crew from X-Kombat. They will fi lm future KOI events and the videos will be available to all our members. All in all, Varna looks to be an exciting time for us.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Yours sincerely

Tommy Morris

T he city of Varna is the third largest city in Bulgaria. It is widely called the seaside capital of Bulgaria as it is the biggest city at the Bulgarian coast. The city lies in the Bay of Varna, nestled in a deep valley between the Frengen Plareau and the Avren Plateau. The

city’s structure resembles an amphitheatre as it follows the curves of the Bay of Varna. It is surrounded by gardens, vineyards and groves.

Places of Interest: A restored Roman spa built in the 2nd century and a Roman Bath dating back to the 3rd century can be found in the downtown. The Holy Virgin Cathedral, considered to be the most impressive monument of the city, rises in the very centre of the city. Another church, the St. Nikola Church is located near the Sea Garden Park and dates back to 1866. The Clock Tower, built in 1880, rises just across the cathedral. The Theatre of Drama, where the fi rst-ever Bulgarian theatre performance was held, is also a must-see place in the city centre. Not far away from the Theatre of Drama is the Puppet Theatre, where the Golden Dolphin Festival of puppets takes place each year. The city also has a number of museums, including the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of National Renaissance, the Naval Museum etc.The Sea Garden is another favourite place of visitors of Varna. The garden, fi nally completed in 1908, shelters an amphitheatre, an astronomic site with an observatory, planetarium and a tower, children playgrounds, and a small chan-nel, where one can practice rowing, a pool with water wheels and a zoo. The beach, where one can fi nd mud and water therapy complexes, two quays, nu-merous restaurants and disco clubs, is also just beneath the Sea Garden Park. The Dolphinarium is one of the favourite attractions for children and guests of Varna for its regular performances of talented dolphin artists.

Food: In Varna you can fi nd a lot of luxurious restaurants. Middle-class re-staurants, private pubs and taverns can be found even in the distant residential quarters of the city. A lot of small pizza shops and snack-bars that offer typi-cally Bulgarian snacks are also scattered all over the city.

Transport: The city’s main bus station is 1.5km away from the city centre with buses to all larger cities in the country, nearby seaside resorts. Besides, Varna’s city transport has a network of over 60 bus lines (some of these also travelling to nearby resorts) and trolley buses.
