Definition:“Safety Chains” are the flexible tension members connected from the front portion of the towed vehicle to the rear portion of the towing vehicle. Their purpose is to retain connection between towed and towing vehicle in the event of failure of the ball, socket, coupler, or hitch.Specification: See Figure 1

Attaching Means:Safety chains must be connected to the front of the trailer or tongue, not to the coupler, by bolts or other devices. The minimum strength of these devices, including those which attach to the towing vehicle, must be equal to the maximum Gross Trailer Weight. No welding, torching, or machining operation shall be performed on the chain by the installer or the operator to attach it to the trailer.

Connecting Methods:Review the illustrations, Figure 2, “Typical Single Safety Chain Installation,” and Figure 3, “Typical Double Safety Chain Installation”, both the single and double chains must be crossed under the tongue. They must be oriented in such a manner as to prevent the tongue from dropping to the ground in the event of failure to the hitch, coupler or ball. The chains must be connected to the towing vehicle as that the slack for each length of chain, between the trailer and the towing vehicle, is the same and must have no more slack when in use than is necessary to permit proper turning of the vehicles. The forward end of the chain must be attached to the towing vehicle, not to the ball but to the hitch or other frame member. The chain must be looped around the member and hooked back into itself.
