What Do You Do in the Cold? Fiction: Narrative – Question and

Answer• 1 Big Book• 6 small book versionsIn order to find out what he should do in the cold, a young boy asks various friends about what they do when the weather grows cold. Each animal and plant describes a different way in which they adapt to the change in seasons.

These Shared Reading texts reveal what different living things (animals, plants, people) do in the day versus the night. Through the use of photographs and illustrations, readers can clearly distinguish the information and determine how living things adapt to changes in their environment.

Changes — How do daily and seasonal changes affect living things?

Read Aloud – Rain

Partner-Shared Reading Texts – Daytime, Nighttime and What Do You Do in the Cold?

Teaching Guide – print and online

Info-fiction: Narrative In this cumulative story, a group of animals living in the African grasslands sense the coming of the rainy season. With the rains come many changes in their environment. The rainy season leads to yet another dry season, showing the cyclical nature of the seasons.

Students explore this inquiry question by first thinking about what they already know about how living things (animals, plants, people) are affected by daily and seasonal changes. Throughout the unit, students will find new information they can connect to their own understandings and focus on what living things do to adapt to daily and seasonal changes. Students will be able to respond to the inquiry question by providing evidence of how different living things are affected by daily and seasonal changes.

Includes support for Before, During, and After Reading of the texts, Working with Words, text-type writing for Question-and-Answer, modelled, guided, and independent writing, student self-assessment, Oral Language Assessment Scale and developmental checklist, and strategies for concluding and extending the unit.

HANGING OUT at the

A colony of bats hangs from tree branches in the Australian rain forest. Suddenly, a female bat loses her grip; she crashes into the underbrush with a baby clinging to her. Luckily, Jenny MacLean, coordinator of the Tolga Bat

Hospital in Queensland, Australia, has been searching the ground for fallen bats. Maclean knows what knocked the bat off the tree: A tick has embedded itself in the bat’s skin and paralyzed it, making the bat unable to hold on. She plucks the tiny tick off the fallen mother bat and then injects her with an antitoxin to counteract the tick’s poison. Another volunteer from the bat hospital wraps the week-old

baby in a cloth and sticks a rubber pacifier in its mouth to comfort it.

PARALYZED POLLINATORS

The volunteers found the mother in time to treat her so she can be reunited later with her young pup. But for many bats, the tick’s bite proves

deadly. Every year, volunteers with the Tolga Bat Hospital face the challenge of raising and releasing hundreds of spectacled flying foxes (fruit-eating bats) orphaned by the ticks.

Two hundred thousand spectacled flying foxes swoop over forests in northern Queensland, where they’re listed as a threatened species. In the past, the number

of these bats has plummeted as humans cleared their rain forest habitat. In addition, farmers killed the winged mammals to keep them from feasting in orchards. Today, laws protect both

Australia’s remaining rain forest and the spectacled flying fox, which plays an important role in the rain forest. They pollinate flowering trees as they move from blossom to blossom, licking the flowers’ sweet nectar and inadvertently spreading pollen. The bats also disperse fruit seeds by swallowing them and then depositing them elsewhere through their droppings. “Those dispersal and pollination services are vital to the forest’s survival,” says Louise Shilton, a wildlife ecologist in Queensland.

A mystery arose in 1986 when these important pollinators began dying on Australia’s Atherton Tablelands, an area in Queensland high above sea level. In 1990, researchers discovered the problem: paralysis ticks. As these tiny parasites—which can grow as wide as the tip of a pencil’s eraser—feed on

spectacled flying foxes’ blood, they inject a neurotoxin that paralyzes the bats, causing them to fall from the rain forest canopy. Eventually the paralysis stops the bats from swallowing or breathing.

Hanging Out at the Bat HospitalEngineers use tricks of the trade to construct an over-the-top ride

E ngineers at the Great Wheel Corporation are on a roll. They’re busy constructing the biggest wheel the

world has ever seen—a giant observation wheel in Beijing, China. When it’s completed in 2009, the Great Beijing Wheel will

lift passengers 208 metres off the ground—almost half the height of the CN Tower. The first giant observation

wheel, the London Eye, put a new spin on the traditional Ferris wheel. Since then, increasingly larger wheels have been constructed in other countries. But as the wheels get bigger, so do the challenges involved in designing them. How do you build the world’s biggest wheel? Here are some of the major challenges engineers face when constructing giant observation wheels.CHALLENGE #1 Engineers need to know up front

whether the wheel will be able to hold up under its load, or weight. This is no small feat considering the total weight of the Great Beijing Wheel and

cabins itself is expected to be 2800 metric tons. That’s as much as 515 African bull elephants! And that’s not all: The load also includes the additional weight of the passengers and the force of the wind pushing against the wheel. Before a single piece of the wheel is made, engineers use math to determine which materials are up to the

task. “For every part of the Wheel, a calculation is made,” says Henk Stam, a design engineer at the Great Wheel Corporation. Only then will the project move ahead.

CHALLENGE #2 Just because a material is sturdy enough to work doesn’t mean it is the right one for the job. Some materials would be too heavy when used on a project

as large as an observation wheel. Other materials would have to be used in too large a quantity. Part of the challenge in designing a giant observation wheel is to keep the wheel’s weight and its wind resistance down. “Adding more material increases the [wheel’s] weight and also the surface exposed to the wind,” Stam explains. So designers must find ways to create a strong structure. One strategy: constructing the wheel’s rim of hollow tubes.
